Advancing Cancer Classifcation Through Machine Learning Analysis Of Rna-Seq Gene Expression Data, Emil Agbemade, Amina Issoufou Anaroua, Dimitri Bamba

Data Science and Data Mining

This study delves into the classifcation of various cancer types using the RNA-Seq (HiSeq) PANCAN dataset from the UCI Machine Learning Repository, which encompasses a rich collection of gene expression data across multiple tumor samples. To improve cancer diagnosis and treatment, our methodology confronts the challenges inherent in high-dimensional datasets, such as the Hughes Effect and the Curse of Dimensionality, through innovative feature selection methods and machine learning approaches. A key component of our strategy includes the use of tree-based algorithms, particularly Random Forest, to refine the dataset to seventy genes of utmost relevance for tumor classifcation, and the application …

Predicting Superconducting Critical Temperature Using Regression Analysis, Roland Fiagbe Jan 2024

Predicting Superconducting Critical Temperature Using Regression Analysis, Roland Fiagbe

Data Science and Data Mining

This project estimates a regression model to predict the superconducting critical temperature based on variables extracted from the superconductor’s chemical formula. The regression model along with the stepwise variable selection gives a reasonable and good predictive model with a lower prediction error (MSE). Variables extracted based on atomic radius, valence, atomic mass and thermal conductivity appeared to have the most contribution to the predictive model.

Modeling Health Insurance Premium Using Bayesian Hierarchical Models, Bennedict Kongyir, Emil Agbemade Jan 2024

Modeling Health Insurance Premium Using Bayesian Hierarchical Models, Bennedict Kongyir, Emil Agbemade

Data Science and Data Mining

Insurance pricing requires pragmatism and creativity due to the unpredictable nature of risk [3]. This paper explores Bayesian hierarchical models to model health insurance premiums using individual and group predictors like demographics, health status, and geography. Data from Kaggle on health insurance policyholders was utilized, with prior distributions enhancing model interpretability and credibility. Bayesian models improve predictive accuracy and provide valuable insights for actuaries and policymakers, highlighting the signifcant impact of factors such as age and BMI on premium pricing.

Predicting Telecommunication Customer Attrition Using The Hopfeld Neural Network Model., Benedict Kongyir, Emil Agbemade, Kelvin Njuki Jan 2024

Predicting Telecommunication Customer Attrition Using The Hopfeld Neural Network Model., Benedict Kongyir, Emil Agbemade, Kelvin Njuki

Data Science and Data Mining

Customer churn prediction has become one of the crucial steps for customer retention. Telecommunication companies rely on loyal customers to make their proft. It is often very easy for customers to switch from one service provider to the other. To prevent or reduce the rate of customer attrition, there needs to be a model that can identify customers who are at risk of churning in the future in advance. Previous literature has shown that predictive models are efective in predicting customer churn. In this work, four tentative machine-learning models are built using data obtained from Kaggle on telecommunication customer attrition …

Structural Modification Of 4'-Aminochalcones As Α-Glucosidase Inhibitors, Emmanuel Sunday Idoko Jan 2024

Structural Modification Of 4'-Aminochalcones As Α-Glucosidase Inhibitors, Emmanuel Sunday Idoko

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Diabetes mellitus, one of the most predominant health problems worldwide, characterized by hyperglycemia, has attracted the attention of medicinal chemists. Although several therapeutic drugs have been developed and used clinically, diabetes continues to pose a growing threat to public health. One of the promising approaches for treating type 2 diabetes involves reducing the rate of carbohydrate hydrolysis by inhibiting the action of α-glucosidase. Over the years, chalcone analogues have been reported for their vast biological properties and as a promising antidiabetic agent. In this research, two series of 4'-aminochalcone derivatives were designed and synthesized as α-glucosidase inhibitors. Twenty-five alkylated 4'-aminochalcone …

Certain Incident Matrices For Lines Intersecting On Plane, Anawin Chongaumklang Jan 2024

Certain Incident Matrices For Lines Intersecting On Plane, Anawin Chongaumklang

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This work studies arrangements of lines on the plane, focusing on Fourier’s 17 lines problem, which involves constructing 101 intersection points with 17 lines. We use code notation and incident matrices to classify possible configurations and develop algorithms to determine which codes are drawable. Special attention is given to the role of multiple points and parallel families in these arrangements. Out of 924 possible codes, 658 are confirmed drawable using a combination of theoretical analysis and computer verification. For the remaining cases, new lemmas are proposed to construct additional intersection points. Our findings offer both theoretical insights and practical algorithms …

High Purity Silver Nano- And Micro Particles With Controllable Shapes By Polymeric Stabilizers, Natsuda Muankhajorn Jan 2024

High Purity Silver Nano- And Micro Particles With Controllable Shapes By Polymeric Stabilizers, Natsuda Muankhajorn

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This work presents a rapid, sustainable, and efficient technique for both recovering silver microstructures from spent button batteries and fabricating flexible conductive materials. In the first phase, a green recovery method was developed using H2O2 as a reducing agent to convert silver sources into high-purity silver microstructures. The morphology of the recovered silver was controlled using polymeric stabilizers (PVP and PVA) whose molecular weights significantly influenced particle shape and aggregation. PVP promoted the formation of uniform silver microplates, while PVA yielded isotropic microspheres. The silver microstructures from the spent button batteries were converted into highly pure silver microstructures (>98%), …

Juvenile Dungeness Face High Predation Risk From Green Crabs Across Increased Temperatures At Different Salinities, Trever Gelling Jan 2024

Juvenile Dungeness Face High Predation Risk From Green Crabs Across Increased Temperatures At Different Salinities, Trever Gelling

Environmental Science and Management Undergraduate Departmental Honors Theses

Marine heatwaves, altered precipitation regimes, and other changing climate conditions are altering the abiotic conditions of Oregon's estuaries. Furthermore, warmer water temperatures are correlated with the range expansion and population growth of the invasive and broadly tolerant Carcinus maenas, the green crab, in Oregon. Metacarcinus magister, Dungeness crab, one of Oregon’s most valuable fishery species, is also facing these climate stressors, and their young that recruit to estuaries overlap with C. maenas adults. Therefore, we wanted to determine impacts of C. maenas on young-of-the-year (YOTY) M. magister and the roles of salinity, temperature, and predator size in mediating …

The D.C. Circuit As A Conseil D'Etat, Andrew Hammond Jan 2024

The D.C. Circuit As A Conseil D'Etat, Andrew Hammond

Articles by Maurer Faculty

A storm is brewing in American administrative law. More and more federal judges, including a majority of the Justices of the Supreme Court, openly question longstanding doctrine. A throng of academics profess skepticism of the same. This formalist turn among judges, lawyers, and academics challenges the very legitimacy of the administrative state. But what does this tempest portend for the D.C. Circuit?

The D.C. Circuit is often described as the nation’s second highest court, but its precise role in the federal judiciary is only fifty years old. As a member of that appellate court, now-Chief Justice John Roberts once admitted …

Translational Neuroscience Contributes To Understanding Neurodevelopmental Outcomes Of Dostoyevsky's "Brothers Karamazov" With Treatment Implications, Stephen I. Deutsch, Jessica A. Burket, Jeffrey Elikan Jd, David R. Spiegel

Department Psychiatry & Behavioral Science Faculty Publications

Dostoyevsky's novels raise profound ethical, moral, philosophical and theological issues and, as a result, both he and his novels serve as fertile subjects of scholarly inquiry across a variety of academic disciplines. In particular, major characters in "The Brothers Karamazov" lend themselves to classical psychodynamic formulations, such as the influence of adverse childhood experiences on adult social and occupational outcomes, which in the case of Dmitry, the eldest son of Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, are considered in exquisitely fine detail. Prosecutor and defense attorney provide differing interpretations of how early traumas, largely due to paternal neglect and abuse, affected Dmitry's adult …

Institutional Antiracism And Critical Pedagogy: A Quantum Leap Forward For Legal Education And The Legal Academy, Danielle M. Conway Jan 2024

Institutional Antiracism And Critical Pedagogy: A Quantum Leap Forward For Legal Education And The Legal Academy, Danielle M. Conway

Faculty Scholarly Works

A fundamental launchpad for redeeming American society is to look to the historical and contextual goals of the Second Founding—the Reconstruction Amendments—and grasp the lessons about justice and equality for all by focusing on the principles of institutional antiracism. While our nation should deploy teaching and learning strategies at all levels of the American system of education, legal education must be out front leading the way to incorporate institutional antiracism through critical pedagogy.

This article provides the historical context in which legal education developed in the antebellum and postbellum periods and up to what might be deemed the “Third Founding” …

Tumefactive Demyelinating Lesions: A Literature Review Of Recent Findings, Yaser M. Al Malik Jan 2024

Tumefactive Demyelinating Lesions: A Literature Review Of Recent Findings, Yaser M. Al Malik

Neurosciences

Tumefactive demyelinating lesion is a variant of multiple sclerosis that is a diagnostic challenge. Tumefactive demyelinating lesion requires extensive work-up as its clinical and radiological features are often indistinguishable from other central nervous system lesions, such as tumors. Diagnosis is further complicated by the increasing recognition that tumefactive demyelinating lesions can occur alongside, evolve into, or develop from numerous conditions other than multiple sclerosis, pointing to a possible overlapping etiology. We review herein relevant studies from 2017 onwards to provide a current view on the pathogenesis, clinical and imaging findings, novel diagnostic techniques for differential diagnoses, and management of tumefactive …

Intracerebral Benign Fibrous Histiocytoma, Liusong Yang, Mingzhe Zheng, Yingfeng Zhu, Zhongqing Chen Jan 2024

Intracerebral Benign Fibrous Histiocytoma, Liusong Yang, Mingzhe Zheng, Yingfeng Zhu, Zhongqing Chen

Neurosciences

Benign fibrous histiocytoma (BFH) within the intracerebral region is remarkably rare. Our report details 2 cases of unusual BFH instances that exhibit no adhesion to the dura mater or cerebral falx, accompanied by a comprehensive literature review. While magnetic resonance imaging demonstrates specific characteristics for BFH, it does not readily differentiate BFH from more common brain neoplasms like gliomas and metastatic tumors. The definitive diagnosis of BFH depends primarily on histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations. Total surgical resection is considered an efficacious therapeutic approach, emphasizing the necessity for prolonged postoperative surveillance to detect any potential tumor recurrence or metastasis.

“Criminalizing” Depositions In Arbitration, Mitch Zamoff Jan 2024

“Criminalizing” Depositions In Arbitration, Mitch Zamoff

Articles

Civil litigation–style deposition practice is preventing commercial arbitration from reaching its full potential as an economical, efficient alternative to a civil lawsuit. Although there is consensus among alternative dispute resolution experts that meaningful limits must be imposed on arbitration discovery to unlock the efficiency benefits of arbitration, depositions continue to feature prominently in commercial arbitrations for at least three reasons. First, civil litigators are addicted to depositions. They reflexively propose overdone deposition practice in arbitrations that replicates their litigation experience. Second, arbitrators may hesitate to disallow deposition discovery out of fear that their awards will be vacated for failure to …

Destruction, Proportionality, And Sustainability: A Law-And-Economics Analysis, Thomas F. Cotter Jan 2024

Destruction, Proportionality, And Sustainability: A Law-And-Economics Analysis, Thomas F. Cotter

Articles

This Paper undertakes a law-and-economics analysis of the remedy of destruction (and, subsidiarily, the related remedies of recall and removal) of products that infringe intellectual property (IP) rights. We begin with a brief survey of international, regional, and domestic law and practice, observing that (1) courts generally are believed to be more likely to order the destruction of copyright- and trademark-infringing goods than of patent-infringing goods, and (2) the frequency with which courts order the destruction of patent-infringing goods varies from one country to another. Our observations lead us to present two principal theses.

The first is that a comparative …

Shareholders All The Way Down: Eu Corporate Sustainability Reforms And The Structure Of Corporate Governance, Matthew Bodie Jan 2024

Shareholders All The Way Down: Eu Corporate Sustainability Reforms And The Structure Of Corporate Governance, Matthew Bodie

Articles

The laws and norms of corporate law are changing across the globe. Gone are the days when scholars could confidently predict that shareholder wealth maximization would be the universal metric of corporate success. Instead, corporate leaders, governments, workers, activists, and even shareholders are looking beyond simplistic models of shareholder primacy to a broader understanding of corporate responsibility. This new approach has taken its firmest hold in the European Union, where three directives over the last decade have reshaped reporting requirements and directors’ duties in significant ways, pushing for greater accountability and attention to the needs of stakeholders.

On The Importance Of Listening To Crime Victims . . . Merciful And Otherwise, Paul Cassell Jan 2024

On The Importance Of Listening To Crime Victims . . . Merciful And Otherwise, Paul Cassell

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

What role should mercy play in the criminal justice system? While several of the other symposium’s articles here in the Texas Law Review argue for expanding mercy’s role, I write to raise a cautionary note. Expanding mercy could potentially conflict with another important feature of contemporary criminal justice: the expanding role of crime victims. Because considerations of mercy focus exclusively on the offender, greater attention to mercy necessarily means less attention to victims. This change in focus would be at odds with a broadly advancing crime victims’ movement in this country and, indeed, in many countries around the world. This …

Restructuring Undefined Assets: Valuation Of Stablecoins And Their Impact On The Bankruptcy Process, Olivia Woodmansee Jan 2024

Restructuring Undefined Assets: Valuation Of Stablecoins And Their Impact On The Bankruptcy Process, Olivia Woodmansee

American University Business Law Review

Difficulties with defining cryptocurrency have plagued federal agencies and courts since crypto’s creation. With the emergence of “crypto winter” in 2022 that saw many crypto-related ventures fail, bankruptcy courts have been challenged to address numerous novel legal issues surrounding crypto-assets. When looking to the Bankruptcy Code fails to provide answers, courts must look to definitions, agency regulations, and an analysis of cryptocurrency’s position in the market to determine its classification. This can quickly become muddled with the voluminous and seemingly conflicting sources that exist. One such issue emerges when courts attempt to determine how to classify a particular cryptocurrency: is …
