Coming Around: A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Vegas Loop, Adriana Alejandra Henriquez Mora Jan 2024

Coming Around: A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Vegas Loop, Adriana Alejandra Henriquez Mora

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

An ex-ante cost benefit analysis of the Vegas Loop was executed, where the possible costs and benefits of implementing the entirety of the project were quantified in monetary terms to measure the consequences of it on all members of society. The Boring Company’s Vegas Loop is a tunnel system which utilizes human-controlled Tesla Model X and Y vehicles to move passengers around the city of Las Vegas, directly to their destination without additional stops. For this analysis, the considered benefits were: fares, reduced travel times, reduced emissions, and bolstering of tourism. Conversely, the considered costs included: the implementation cost, the …

The Time War: Comparatively Analyzing The Process Of Settler Colonialism & The Importance Of Personal Record, Naomi Hardin Jan 2024

The Time War: Comparatively Analyzing The Process Of Settler Colonialism & The Importance Of Personal Record, Naomi Hardin

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

In this work, I argue for the necessity of framing settler colonialism as an ongoing process of exploitation and genocide, rather than an event of the past. Understanding settler colonialism as ongoing allows us to recognize how white supremacy utilizes direct and indirect forms of violence to not just occupy land but extract resources, build infrastructure that ensures its survival, and displace indigenous peoples. I offer first a sketch of settler colonialism as it is happening in Palestine, Algeria, and the Americas. I engage with books and research essays to think comparatively about these phenomena & further reveal the legacies …

Migrant Vulnerability To Human Trafficking: A Legislative Decade In Review With Historical And Policy Process Analysis, Elizabeth Solis Jan 2024

Migrant Vulnerability To Human Trafficking: A Legislative Decade In Review With Historical And Policy Process Analysis, Elizabeth Solis

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Despite the establishment of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) in 2000, the state and prevalence of human trafficking in the United States has greatly increased. While there exists more information and legislation, it still remains an under-researched and under-evaluated issue. This study looks through the enacted human trafficking federal legislation over the last decade to track whether migrant vulnerability to human trafficking has been further addressed with the evolution of the issue within the country. To provide a relevant analysis, this study will look through human trafficking legislation through the years of 2013-2023 and will focus on the main …

Late Discovery: Student Experiences With Late Learning Disability Diagnoses, Margot Moffa Jan 2024

Late Discovery: Student Experiences With Late Learning Disability Diagnoses, Margot Moffa

Brehm Scholars Research

My research focuses on the experiences of students who were diagnosed with a learning disability in high school or college. I conducted a qualitative study including eight interviews. Findings after the study showed that participants were never identified without seeking help independently. Additionally, living with an undiagnosed learning disability left negative impacts on participants' mental health, resulting in the development of coping strategies to mask their symptoms and experiences. This research is critical as getting diagnosed with a learning disability later in life can be detrimental to a student's learning experience. Struggling in school and not understanding is extremely frustrating …

Teacher's Perception Of Emotional Intelligence In Administrators And How It Impacts Teacher Job Satisfaction In Rural Nebraska, Thomas Lee Schneider

Dissertations and Theses

This qualitative comparative case study explored teachers’ perceptions of emotional intelligence in administrators and its impact on job satisfaction. The research addressed whether teachers perceive administrators as meeting their emotional needs and how administration influences job satisfaction. Participants from two comparable rural school districts were purposefully selected and assigned pseudonyms. Data collection methods included small focus groups and journaling. Thematic analysis revealed three key themes: (a) administrative support, (b) fostering a positive culture and relationships, and (c) managing feelings of being overwhelmed or burnout. These interconnected themes underscore the importance of emotionally intelligent leadership in enhancing teacher support and overall …

A Great American Gun Myth: Race And The Naming Of The “Saturday Night Special”, Jennifer L. Behrens, Joseph Blocher Jan 2024

A Great American Gun Myth: Race And The Naming Of The “Saturday Night Special”, Jennifer L. Behrens, Joseph Blocher

Faculty Scholarship

At a time when Second Amendment doctrine has taken a strongly historical turn and gun rights advocates have increasingly argued that gun regulation itself is historically racist, it is especially important that historical claims about race and guns be taken seriously and vetted appropriately. In this short article, we evaluate the often-repeated claim that the nickname “Saturday Night Special” derives from the phrase “[n___er]-town Saturday night.”

Based on a review of newspapers, legislative debates, dictionaries, slang compendiums, and other sources, we find no historical support for this claim. It apparently appeared for the first time, unsourced, in a 1976 article …

The Dynamics Of Equity And Common Law: Historical Perspectives And Future Directions, Darren Lee Jan 2024

The Dynamics Of Equity And Common Law: Historical Perspectives And Future Directions, Darren Lee

Plymouth Law Review

This article critically explores the evolution and interaction between equity and common law within the English legal system, particularly in light of the Judicature Acts of 1873 and 1875. These Acts aimed to harmonise the procedural aspects of both legal traditions but initiated an ongoing debate regarding their substantive integration. Central to this research, is the argument that equity should function primarily as a meta-law, refining and enhancing the fairness and justice of common law default rules, before addressing novel legal dilemmas that these rules fail to adequately resolve. The research finds a dynamic role for equity: initially acting as …

A Comparative Study Of Censorship Law And Policy In Relation To Literature And Journalism, Emma Whetnall Jan 2024

A Comparative Study Of Censorship Law And Policy In Relation To Literature And Journalism, Emma Whetnall

Plymouth Law Review

Spanning over time and nations, this article explores the censorship of literature over three main themes: censorship through a religious lens, the censorship of journalism, and censorship in schools. By delving into a case study for Permual Murugan’s One Part Woman and Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses and analysing Hindu and Islamic approaches to censorship and the extremities they will go to to censor, Eastern religious tolerance of free speech and unorthodox views is exposed. Further, it explores the freedom for journalists, particularly in Islamic countries where said freedom is restricted, and the threat that censorship has on democracy. It …

Non-Technical Skills Proficiency In Aviation Pilots: A Systematic Review, Seda Ceken Jan 2024

Non-Technical Skills Proficiency In Aviation Pilots: A Systematic Review, Seda Ceken

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

This systematic review aims to examine the role of non-technical competencies in pilot selection and flight operations, and explore the methods used for their assessment. It has been discerned that relying solely on technical flying skills is insufficient for a pilot; there is a growing understanding that a pilot candidate must possess and adeptly employ non-technical skills, commonly referred to as Crew Resource Management (CRM) skills. This systematic review was designed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. For this review, a systematic search was conducted across seven databases. Seventeen publications were included in …
