Shared Decision-Making In Vaginal Breech Birth: An Integrative Review, Laiken K. Noble, Susan R. Turner Jan 2024

Shared Decision-Making In Vaginal Breech Birth: An Integrative Review, Laiken K. Noble, Susan R. Turner

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Vaginal breech birth has declined since the Term Breech Trial in 2000 because of study outcomes showing higher adverse outcomes for the neonate in vaginal breech births (VBB) when compared to cesarean sections. Recent literature, however, shows that maternal morbidity and mortality are high with cesarean section compared to VBB. Modern delivery providers have limited knowledge, education, and skills in VBB, which ultimately leads to limited delivery options for women. Providers should be aware that informed consent includes discussing all options for management, including VBB, external cephalic version, and cesarean section, as well as the short-term and long-term implications …

Ferritin Screening For Nonanemic Iron Deficiency In Pregnancy, Jolene E. Jakubowsky, Tiffany E. Robinson Jan 2024

Ferritin Screening For Nonanemic Iron Deficiency In Pregnancy, Jolene E. Jakubowsky, Tiffany E. Robinson

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: With increased iron demand in pregnancy, accurate and timely diagnosis of iron deficiency is especially important since its symptoms are life-limiting or life-threatening. Screening for ferritin, an indicator of iron storage, could lead to early diagnoses of nonanemic iron deficiency (NAID), though there is currently no consensus on universal ferritin screening in pregnancy. The purpose of this review was to identify the incidence of NAID, the current evidence and guidelines for ferritin screening in pregnancy, to determine if ferritin is the most appropriate test, and if so, what cutoff level has the highest specificity and sensitivity. Methods: Using the …

Who Can Teach? Making The Case For Adult Learners As Adult Education Teachers, Alisa Vlahakis Povenmire Jan 2024

Who Can Teach? Making The Case For Adult Learners As Adult Education Teachers, Alisa Vlahakis Povenmire

Community Engagement Student Work

This paper explores the rationale for the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education policy requirement of a bachelor’s degree as the minimum qualification for instructors in state-funded adult education programs and how this requirement obstructs equitable access to teaching careers in adult education. The bachelor’s degree policy is analyzed with respect to three complimentary theories: democratic education, equality of intelligence, and empowerment. Analysis is supported with mixed-methods research consisting of a literature review with a focus on the benefits of student leadership; review of pertinent adult education policy; a survey of staffing challenges in Massachusetts adult education programs; a …

With its integral sculptures, soaring towers, and feats of engineering, Architect Antoni Gaudí’s masterpiece is unlike any other church or cathedral in the world. Scholarly Works

On April 19 and 20, 2023, Professors Bernard Hibbitts and Richard Weisberg convened a conference at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law titled “Disarmed, Distracted, Disconnected, and Distressed: Modern Legal Education and the Unmaking of American Lawyers.” Four speakers concluded the event with a spirited conversation about themes expressed during the proceedings. Distilling a lively two days, they asked: what are the most critical challenges now facing US legal education and, by extension, lawyers and the communities they serve? Their agreements and disagreements were striking, so much so that Professors Hibbitts and Weisberg invited those four to extend their …

Amended Expert Disclosure Report: Navahine V. Dept. Of Transportation, State Of Hawai’I, Catherine Smith

Scholarly Articles

From a historical and sociological legal perspective, children in America, including in Hawai'i, require extraordinary legal protection from the harm of climate change and the government actions causing them harm. Hawai'i has a long history and tradition of leading the way on broadening rights and protections under state law, particularly for children. The principles of intergenerational justice and equity at the heart of the public trust doctrine in Hawai'i similarly require that courts accord special attention and protection for children.

On June 20, 2024, the youth-powered Navahine case settled, resulting in the first constitutional climate settlement of its kind in …

Gluten-Free Hosts And The Cross: Revelatory Suffering In Christianity, Gilbert Perez

Obsculta

The body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus are said to be made present by the Eucharist: bread and wine placed on the altar. However, the Roman Catholic Church teaches there is no validity to consecrations with gluten-free Hosts. This article notes the past permissions on gluten-free hosts and explores how present and former practices exhibit the nature of the Crucifixion, humanity’s participation in a world it abuses, and, furthermore, how to remedy this source of exclusion.

Is Long-Term Survival Higher In Patients Who Receive Propofol-Based Total Intravenous Anesthesia During Colorectal Cancer Surgery Compared To Volatile Anesthesia, Shad Anthony Mitchell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The study reviewed several retrospective cohort studies that examined the impact of propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) versus volatile anesthesia (VA) on the long-term survival of colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery patients. Eight studies found no significant difference in mortality between the two anesthesia types, while three studies indicated a significant decrease in all-cause mortality favoring propofol TIVA. The studies had varying follow-up periods, with some extending to five years. Notably, two studies controlled the type of volatile anesthetic used, specifically sevoflurane and desflurane. The findings suggest a potential survival advantage for propofol TIVA, warranting further investigation.

Academic Health Department Partnerships: Impacts And Implications, Madeline Kraft Jan 2024

Academic Health Department Partnerships: Impacts And Implications, Madeline Kraft

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the Academic Health Department (AHD) partnerships, and the impacts that they provide to three entities: students, health departments, and academic institutions. Through AHD partnerships, internships and other kinds of field experiences are used. Internships provide an opportunity for academic institutions and students to interact with the community, provide experiences and motivations to work within the field, and cement the knowledge gained. For an AHD partnership to be mutually beneficial, it needs to provide benefits for both the academic institution, such as teaching and research opportunities, and the governmental side, …

‘Resisting’ While Collaboratively Informing In Communist Czechoslovakia, Mark A. Drumbl, Barbora Holá Jan 2024

‘Resisting’ While Collaboratively Informing In Communist Czechoslovakia, Mark A. Drumbl, Barbora Holá

Scholarly Articles

Informers in the service of state secret police collaborate with authorities and thus contribute to the power of repressive regimes. Through a case-study of Communist Czechoslovakia (1945–1989)—and drawing from secret police archives– this article presents selected stories of informers who in one way or another also ‘resisted’ collaboration with the Czechoslovak State Security (StB). By doing so, we try to further complexify the notions of ’everyday resistance’, on the one hand, and ‘collaboration’ on the other. We demonstrate that resistant acts, similar to collaborative acts, can be apolitically devoid of ideology, highly idiosyncratic, and motivated by private drivers. Informing can …

Agent Of Russian Interests Abroad: Assessing The Moscow Patriarchate’S Activity In The Balkans And Beyond, Robert C. Blitt Jan 2024

Agent Of Russian Interests Abroad: Assessing The Moscow Patriarchate’S Activity In The Balkans And Beyond, Robert C. Blitt

Scholarly Works

This Article addresses the role played by the Russian Orthodox Church—Moscow Patriarchate (ROC) in supporting the Kremlin’s policy objectives in the Balkans, a region with significant historical ties to Russia and a common religious heritage steeped in Eastern Orthodoxy. In the face of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, concern for the region’s stability has grown. This is particularly so due to Kremlin efforts to deflect attention away from Ukraine by fueling ethnic, religious, and political tensions left over from the U.S.-brokered Dayton Accords that ended the years of war following Yugoslavia’s collapse.

The analysis presented herein demonstrates that the ROC’s operation …

Children’s mental health care has been on the decline since the start of the century. The COVID-19 pandemic further unearthed this significant worsening of mental health in children with heightened levels of anxiety, depression, loneliness, anger, and fatigue leading to an increase in the number of emergency room visits and inpatient hospitalizations. Art and narrative-based interventions are known to improve patient outcomes and are a crucial component of pediatric inpatient psychiatric care. We discuss the process of adoption of a novel therapeutic comic book that was developed for children admitted to the hospital in a psychiatric inpatient unit at Yale-New …

Teaching Community College Composition Students How To Use Ai Technology Ethically Through The Research Process, Amber H. Mabus

Doctor of Arts in English Pedagogy Capstones

Composition and rhetoric instructors' concern about the impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) on education has dramatically amplified since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, leading some to fear the end of our discipline as we know it. The controversy surrounding GenAI has led some educators to call for a complete ban on AI programs in the classroom, while others blindly accept what the technology has to offer without considering the risks involved, with a final group resting somewhere in the middle. Inspired by this debate, this study seeks to answer the research question: "Could teaching students how to …

Atlas: Targeting Student Writing Deficiencies Through Assessment & Mentoring In The College Classroom, Leanna Brunner

Doctor of Arts in English Pedagogy Capstones

The landscape of the college classroom is changing at warp speed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and developing technologies such as artificial intelligence. As such, it is time for those in leadership at the administrative level to redefine what it means for students to be successful in their college classrooms. Placing students with different educational experiences and skillsets into one class is no longer working, and many students who could be successful with a little bit of understanding and assistance are slipping through the proverbial cracks of failure. Some of these students never step foot in college again. …
