Members of microbial communities can substantially overlap in substrate use. However, what enables functionally redundant microorganisms to coassemble or even stably coexist remains poorly understood. Here, we show that during unstable successional dynamics on complex, natural organic matter, functionally redundant bacteria can coexist by partitioning low-concentration substrates even though they compete for one simple, dominant substrate. We allowed ocean microbial communities to self-assemble on leachates of the brown seaweed Fucus vesiculosus and then analyzed the competition among 10 taxonomically diverse isolates representing two distinct stages of the succession. All, but two isolates, exhibited an average of 90% ± 6% pairwise …

Pharmacokinetic Changes And Dosage Adjustment Of Digoxin In Elderly Patients With Atrial Fibrillation: A Narrative Review, Mohammed Alfaqeeh, Lanny I. Permatasari, Miski A. Khairinisa, Taofik Rusdiana
Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Research
Digoxin is a cardiac glycoside medication commonly used to control rapid heart rates in Atrial Fibrillation (AF). However, digoxin has a narrow therapeutic range and can be associated with adverse effects, including increased mortality risk, especially in the elderly. Pharmacokinetic changes occur with aging, affecting the way drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated from the body. Thus, this narrative review aimed to assess the optimization of digoxin dosing in elderly patients with AF while considering pharmacokinetic changes due to aging. We performed a comprehensive computerized search of relevant English articles and a manual examination of reference lists from primary …

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic illnesses identified by elevated blood glucose levels. The glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) test is used to evaluate a person’s control of their blood glucose levels. According to a recent study, mHealth interventions may be particularly helpful for assisting patients with diabetes mellitus to self-monitor their status on their HbA1c level. Therefore, this systematic review aims to provide an overview of how mHealth affects individuals with diabetes mellitus, concentrating on HbA1c evaluation. A systematic review was conducted by reviewing the PubMed, Google Scholar, and Mendeley databases for randomized control trials published between February 2017 …
Positive Effects Of Conservative Religion On The Mental Health Of Sexual Minorities, Jaxon Jessup
Positive Effects Of Conservative Religion On The Mental Health Of Sexual Minorities, Jaxon Jessup
Student Works
Sexual minorities often struggle to navigate their sexuality and conservative religious beliefs. Conservative religion is often thought to be toxic for sexual minorities because of the emphasis on traditional marriage (Anderton et al., 2012), and often, the LGBT community will reject sexual minorities that choose to remain in religion (O'Brien, 2007). Conservative religion, however, provides many resources that could benefit sexual (and other) minorities. Religion can help create a sense of identity through teachings and community involvement that may strengthen positive self-perception; it may also create a sense of belonging within a supportive community, especially when individuals are raised among …

The COVID-19 pandemic led to supply chain disruptions causing a severe shortage of infant formula. The shortage impacted parents of infants with cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) who rely on specialized formulas. However, research on parent perspectives during formula shortages is limited. We aimed to understand the factors guiding parents’ decisions when transitioning to alternative amino acid formula (AAF) or extensively hydrolyzed formula (eHF) during the national formula shortage. We conducted a survey using the ZSMoments platform and found that before the shortage, parents valued safety (83%), tolerability (78%), and reputability (78%) as primary factors in selecting eHFs and AAFs. …

Myelodysplastic neoplasms (MDS) define clonal hematopoietic malignancies characterized by heterogeneous mutational and clinical spectra typically seen in the elderly. Curative treatment entails allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant, which is often not a feasible option due to older age and significant comorbidities. Immunotherapy has the cytotoxic capacity to elicit tumor-specific killing with long-term immunological memory. While a number of platforms have emerged, therapeutic vaccination presents as an appealing strategy for MDS given its promising safety profile and amenability for commercialization. Several preclinical and clinical trials have investigated the efficacy of vaccines in MDS; these include peptide vaccines targeting tumor antigens, whole …

Background
Microglia-mediated neuroinflammation in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is not only a response to pathophysiological events, but also plays a causative role in neurodegeneration. Cytoplasmic cysteinyl-tRNA synthetase (CARS) is considered to be a stimulant for immune responses to diseases; however, it remains unknown whether CARS is involved in the pathogenesis of AD.
Methods
Postmortem human temporal cortical tissues at different Braak stages and AD patient-derived serum samples were used to investigate the changes of CARS levels in AD by immunocytochemical staining, real-time PCR, western blotting and ELISA. After that, C57BL/6J and APP/PS1 transgenic mice and BV-2 cell line were used to …

Clinical use of polymeric scaffolds for tissue engineering often suffers from their inability to promote strong cellular interactions. Functionalization with biomolecules may improve outcomes; however, current functionalization approaches using covalent chemistry or physical adsorption can lead to loss of biomolecule bioactivity. Here, we demonstrate a novel bottom-up approach for enhancing the bioactivity of poly (l-lactic acid) electro spun scaffolds though interfacial coassembly of protein payloads with silk fibroin into nano thin coatings. In our approach, protein payloads are first added into an aqueous solution with Bombyx mori-derived silk fibroin. Phosphate anions are then added to trigger coassembly of the payload …

Aging is a risk factor for disease via increased susceptibility to infection, decreased ability to maintain homeostasis, inefficiency in combating stress, and decreased regenerative capacity. Multiple diseases, including urinary tract infection (UTI), are more prevalent with age; however, the mechanisms underlying the impact of aging on the urinary tract mucosa and the correlation between aging and disease remain poorly understood. Here, we show that, relative to young (8-12 weeks) mice, the urothelium of aged (18-24 months) female mice accumulates large lysosomes with reduced acid phosphatase activity and decreased overall autophagic flux in the aged urothelium, indicative of compromised cellular homeostasis. …

The opposing forces of gene flow and isolation are two major processes shaping genetic diversity. Understanding how these vary across space and time is necessary to identify the environmental features that promote diversification. The detection of considerable geographic structure in taxa from the arid Nearctic has prompted research into the drivers of isolation in the region. Several geographic features have been proposed as barriers to gene flow, including the Colorado River, Western Continental Divide, and a hypothetical Mid-Peninsular Seaway in Baja California. However, recent studies suggest that the role of barriers in genetic differentiation may have been overestimated when compared …

History In The Margins: Paratextual Notes In Codex Koridethi (Θ 038), Jonathan Campbell
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
In this article I examine the paratextual features of the ninth- century four-Gospel manuscript Codex Koridethi (Θ 038). I argue that a thorough study of this manuscript’s paratextual features gives fascinating insight into its history. There are thirty-three marginal notes contained within this manuscript, nine of which are in Greek, and twenty-four in Georgian. These notes are unusual because they do not relate to the biblical text. Instead, they attest to various prayers, endowments, and laws which the community found important enough to record in this holy book. The notes are broken down into three categories. First, several give historical …

Phishing website attacks are a type of cyber-attack in which perpetrators create fraudulent websites that mimic legitimate platforms, such as online banking or social media, with the intent of tricking unsuspecting users into divulging sensitive information. This includes passwords, credit card details, usernames, and other personal data. These phishing websites aredesigned to look authentic and often employ various techniques, such as URL spoofing, social engineering, and email or text message phishing, to lure victims into revealing their confidential information. Web apps are growing increasingly complex and difficult to identify at first glance, especially when they use encryption and obfuscation techniques. …

This paper used an evidence and gap map (EGM) to advance the scientific understanding of sibling relationship quality among children aged 2 to 18 years by synthesizing literature on 277 empirical studies from 1985 to 2022 to delineate patterns of study design, sampling, and measurement. Most existing research has utilized majority of White, middle-to-upper class, and/or two-caregiver family samples. Nearly 85% (n = 235) of studies used quantitative methods to measure sibling relationship quality across eight domains: conflict, warmth/affection, quality, cohesion, hostility, power/control, positive engagement, and conflict management. A total of 122 studies used a measure of sibling relationship quality …

APC mutation is the main driving mechanism of CRC development and leads to constitutively activated WNT signaling, overpopulation of ALDH+ stem cells (SCs), and incomplete differentiation. We previously reported that retinoic acid (RA) receptors are selectively expressed in ALDH+ SCs, which provides a way to target cancer SCs with retinoids to induce differentiation. Hypotheses: A functional link exists between the WNT and RA pathways, and APC mutation generates a WNT:RA imbalance that decreases retinoid-induced differentiation and increases ALDH+ SCs. Accordingly, to restore parity in WNT:RA signaling, we induce wt-APC expression in APC-mutant CRC cells, and we assess the ability of …
