‘Sprung From The Land Itself’: Rooted Human Rights Education As Critical Global Citizenship Praxis, Monisha Bajaj, David A. Tow Apr 2026

‘Sprung From The Land Itself’: Rooted Human Rights Education As Critical Global Citizenship Praxis, Monisha Bajaj, David A. Tow

International Journal of Human Rights Education

This article discusses the field of Human Rights Education (HRE) and its intersections with the field of Global Citizenship Education (GCE), both now more than 60 years into their existence as discourse and practice communities. We trace the emergence of transformative, critical, and decolonial forms of HRE and offer a new conceptual framework for Rooted HRE. Rooted HRE offers a transformative approach to fostering critical global citizenship (CGC) by embedding global frameworks within the immediacy of local struggles. It draws on critical perspectives of global citizenship (Andreotti, 2011; Gaudelli, 2016), Transformative Human Rights Education (THRED) (Bajaj et al., 2016), and …

‘But I’Ll Get Back On My Feet Some Day’: Hopeful Losers In Grateful Dead Lyrics, David L. Emerson, Janet Brennan Croft Apr 2026

‘But I’Ll Get Back On My Feet Some Day’: Hopeful Losers In Grateful Dead Lyrics, David L. Emerson, Janet Brennan Croft

Journal of Tolkien Research

Many songs in the Grateful Dead repertoire, particularly those written by Robert Hunter but also those by other lyricists, feature “loser” characters: characters who fail, in ways mundane or spectacular, usually while simultaneously deluding themselves about their chances of success. In this presentation we examine several of these characters and their stories, applying Tolkienian terminology and concepts like ofermod, “Northern courage,” trust in providence, and eucatastrophe. We’ll compare our hopeful losers with Tolkien’s characters, who hold on to hope in the bleakest of circumstances, yet temper all hopes by acknowledging that living in the physical world is “fighting the …

Optimal Control Analysis Of Mob Dynamics Using Generation Z Youtube Channel Behavior, Tahidu Alhassan Apr 2026

Optimal Control Analysis Of Mob Dynamics Using Generation Z Youtube Channel Behavior, Tahidu Alhassan

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Digital media communication technologies have changed how people organize and act together. During the Generation Z event, social media platforms (e.g., X, YouTube, Facebook) played a major role in spreading information and mobilizing collective actions online and offline. In this work, we modified a mathematical dynamic model of the social media mob using an optimal control technique to adjust the rate of spread in response to social interactions. We examined the susceptible-quarantined-counter-infective-recovered (SQCIR) epidemiology model on a YouTube dataset covering Gen-Z data spread in Nepal from 8 to 13 September 2025. Using high-temporal-resolution real-world social media data will help to …

The Polysemous Word Flow Task: A Novel Way Of Understanding Creativity, Brady Flanagan Apr 2026

The Polysemous Word Flow Task: A Novel Way Of Understanding Creativity, Brady Flanagan

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Creativity is defined as the generation of new ideas to solve problems and likely involves the interplay of three brain networks:, the Default Mode Network (DMN), the Executive Control Network (ECN), and the Salience Network (SN). The recently developed Polysemous Word Flow Task (PolyFT) may serve as a model to assess triple network activity. In this study, we plan to use Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to correlate two components of the PolyFT, clustering and switching, with the triple network model. We predict that the clustering component is tied to DMN function while the switching component is tied to ECN function.

A Feminist Analysis Of Greta Gerwig’S Little Women And Lady Bird, Tamara J. Hughes Apr 2026

A Feminist Analysis Of Greta Gerwig’S Little Women And Lady Bird, Tamara J. Hughes

Research & Creative Achievement Day

Following recent attention being given to gender values seen within popular culture, more scholars are taking the time to consider the role that films play in communicating these values. Given this attention, this analysis hopes to look at feminist themes within two films written and produced by Greta Gerwig (Little Women and Lady Bird). I propose to use a communication analysis using perspectives of both feminist criticism and fantasy theme analysis to uncover and understand the use of themes throughout the two films. This analysis hopes to gain understanding of the communication methods that Greta Gerwig imposes in her films …

Do You Have A Dog?: Investigating How Teacher Self-Disclosures Affect Student Perceptions, Kylie B. Nelson Apr 2026

Do You Have A Dog?: Investigating How Teacher Self-Disclosures Affect Student Perceptions, Kylie B. Nelson

Research & Creative Achievement Day

One of the most common questions a student might ask a professor is, do you have a dog? Self-disclosures from college professors have become commonplace in a classroom, but as perceptions and norms shift, teacher self-disclosure has yet to be understood in a modern context. The purpose of this study is to understand how teacher self-disclosure affects students’ perceptions. Using a survey research design, this study aims to test associations between appropriate self-disclosure and student satisfaction. Effects of frequency, negativity, and relevance of self-disclosure aim to be correlated with student affect for the class and professor. Results are expected to …

M.E. Bradford And American Conservatism, Avery White Apr 2026

M.E. Bradford And American Conservatism, Avery White

Liberty University Research Week

M.E. Bradford was a professor of English at the University of Dallas who contributed significant intellectual work to the American conservative movement in the 1960s-1990s. His training in rhetoric and upbringing in the American South gave him a unique perspective on the founding documents of the United States and major events in American history like the Revolutionary War. Bradford focused on continuity arguing the rights and freedoms American enjoy are really extensions of the traditional rights of Englishmen the colonists enjoyed prior to independence. He analyzes the rhetoric of the Declaration of Independence and United States Constitution and finds a …

Bridging The Gap In Adolescent And Young Adult Sexual Health Education, Michael Ago Tetteh, Anjali Jacob, Cassidy Harris, Claire Rau

Liberty University Research Week

Background: Risky sexual behavior among adolescents is a significant public health concern in the United States and locally in Lynchburg, Virginia. In 2024, Virginia reported elevated rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including 851 new HIV cases (21.4% occurring in ages 15–24), as well as high rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, which heavily burden youth. In Lynchburg specifically, 43.5% of high school seniors report having had sexual intercourse, and the teen birth rate is 12 per 1,000 for females aged 15–19. Beyond physical health, these behaviors reflect poor spiritual health and a departure from a biblical sexual ethic, as …

Navigating Life And Death: A Moral Critique Of Euthanasia Practices Worldwide, Brooke Fuzie, Rachel Joseph

Wisdom & Compassion: The LUSON Journal

Euthanasia and physician-assisted death remain deeply debated ethical issues shaped by history, law, and cultural values. This narrative review explores how diverse ethical frameworks, shifting global legislation, and cultural perspectives inform current discourse, with special attention to the role of nurses guided by the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics. Drawing on peer-reviewed studies, legal documents, and recent case analyses published between 2013 and 2025, the review identifies three key insights. Ethical frameworks influence whether society accepts or opposes euthanasia; robust legal safeguards are needed to protect autonomy and prevent misuse; and palliative care and advance care planning, including …

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

This review assesses Mythopoeic Narrative in The Legend of Zelda, edited by Anthony G. Cirilla and Vincent E. Rone, as a compelling contribution to fantasy studies, mythopoeia, and game studies that argues for the academic centrality of interactive narrative media. The volume positions The Legend of Zelda not merely as popular entertainment, but as a sophisticated mythic tradition; part of an evolving legendarium shaped through iterative storytelling, symbolic worldbuilding, and ethically structured heroic narrative. Emphasizing the interpretive significance of player engagement, the collection demonstrates how games uniquely merge narrative meaning with embodied action, transforming mythic structure into lived experience. …

Schools Of Magic: Learning In Children’S And Young Adult Fantasy Fiction By Megan H. Suttie, Sara Landaverde

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

This review examines Schools of Magic: Learning in Children’s and Young Adult Fantasy Fiction, in which Megan H. Suttie argues that fantastic school narrative exists as a distinct subgenre requiring a holistic critical framework. Reading magical school texts simultaneously as school stories, fantasy narratives, and representations of educational institutions, Suttie demonstrates how such works present processes of ideological formation, social reproduction, and readerly critique. Through chapters focusing on J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, Patrick Rothfuss's Kingkiller Chronicle, Lev Grossman's Magicians trilogy, and Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching novels, Suttie illustrates the flexibility of her model across various fantasy texts. This …
