Current video anomaly detection (VAD) approaches with weak supervisions are inherently limited to a closed-set setting and may struggle in open-world applications where there can be anomaly categories in the test data unseen during training. A few recent studies attempt to tackle a more realistic setting, open-set VAD, which aims to de-tect unseen anomalies given seen anomalies and normal videos. However, such a setting focuses on predicting frame anomaly scores, having no ability to recognize the specific categories of anomalies, despite the fact that this ability is essential for building more informed video surveillance systems. This paper takes a step …

Anomaly Heterogeneity Learning For Open-Set Supervised Anomaly Detection, Jiawen Zhu, Choubo Ding, Yu Tian, Guansong Pang

Open-set supervised anomaly detection (OSAD) - a recently emerging anomaly detection area - aims at utilizing a few samples of anomaly classes seen during training to detect unseen anomalies (i.e., samples from open-set anomaly classes), while effectively identifying the seen anomalies. Benefiting from the prior knowledge illustrated by the seen anomalies, current OSAD methods can often largely reduce false positive errors. However, these methods are trained in a closed-set setting and treat the anomaly examples as from a homogeneous distribution, rendering them less effective in generalizing to unseen anomalies that can be drawn from any distribution. This paper proposes to …

Multi-view representation learning aims to derive robust representations that are both view-consistent and view-specific from diverse data sources. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of existing approaches in this domain, highlighting a commonly overlooked aspect: the redundancy between view-consistent and view-specific representations. To this end, we propose an innovative framework for multi-view representation learning, which incorporates a technique we term 'distilled disentangling'. Our method introduces the concept of masked cross-view prediction, enabling the extraction of compact, high-quality view-consistent representations from various sources without incurring extra computational overhead. Additionally, we develop a distilled disentangling module that efficiently filters out consistency-related information …
Zero-Shot Out-Of-Distribution Detection With Outlier Label Exposure, Choubo Ding, Guansong Pang
Zero-Shot Out-Of-Distribution Detection With Outlier Label Exposure, Choubo Ding, Guansong Pang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As vision-language models like CLIP are widely applied to zero-shot tasks and gain remarkable performance on in-distribution (ID) data, detecting and rejecting out-of-distribution (OOD) inputs in the zero-shot setting have become crucial for ensuring the safety of using such models on the fly. Most existing zero-shot OOD detectors rely on ID class label-based prompts to guide CLIP in classifying ID images and rejecting OOD images. In this work we instead propose to leverage a large set of diverse auxiliary outlier class labels as pseudo OOD class text prompts to CLIP for enhancing zero-shot OOD detection, an approach we called Outlier …

Monitoring swimmer performance is crucial for improving training and enhancing athletic techniques. Traditional methods for tracking swimmers, such as above-water and underwater cameras, face limitations due to the need for multiple cameras and obstructions from water splashes. This paper presents a novel approach for tracking swimmers using a moving UAV. The proposed system employs a UAV equipped with a high-resolution camera to capture aerial footage of the swimmers. The footage is then processed using computer vision algorithms to extract the swimmers' positions and movements. This approach offers several advantages, including single camera use and comprehensive coverage. The system's accuracy is …

More Human-Likeness, Less Self-Disclosure? Avatars' Form Realism And Job Applicants' Self-Disclosure In Ai Interviews, Yamin Xu, Keng Siau, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The rise of AI in recruitment promises to revolutionize how organizations evaluate job candidates. The quality of AI evaluations is determined by the input data, which depends on job applicants' self-disclosure. However, little is known about how the design elements of AI interview systems, particularly avatar interviewers, influence job applicants' self-disclosure during these interactions. This study aims to address this gap by specifically focusing on how the form realism of avatar interviewers affects job applicants' self-disclosure through their perceptions. In addition, the study will examine the effects of job type as a moderator. Drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) model, this …

The Low-Carbon Vehicle Routing Problem With Dynamic Speed On Steep Roads, Jianhua Xiao, Xiaoyang Liu, Huixian Zhang, Zhiguang Cao, Liujiang Kang, Yunyun Niu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The low-carbon vehicle routing problem with dynamic speeds on steep roads (LCVRPDS-SR) considers the combined effects of dynamic speeds, steep roads, and loads on carbon emissions. Earlier low-carbon vehicle routing problems typically assumed that vehicles travel at a constant speed on flat roads. However, such models do not apply in urban or rural areas with steep roads. Although the subsequent studies further explored the effect of steep roads, their performance are still suboptimal since they fail to take into account the varying speeds on the terrain. This paper proposes an extended LCVRPDS-SR model that tackles dynamic speed decisions on steep …

Space Information Network (SIN) enables universal Internet connectivity for any object, even in remote and extreme environments where deploying a cellular network is difficult. Access authentication is crucial for ensuring user access control in SIN and preventing unauthorized entities from gaining access to network services. However, due to the complex communication environment in SIN, including exposed links and higher signal delay, designing a secure and efficient authentication scheme presents a significant challenge. In this paper, we propose a secure communication protocol for SIN with periodic k-time anonymous authentication (named PkT-SIN) that allows satellite users to anonymously authenticate to ground stations …

Actively Learn From Llms With Uncertainty Propagation For Generalized Category Discovery, Jinggui Liang, Lizi Liao, Hao Fei, Bobo Li, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Generalized category discovery faces a key issue: the lack of supervision for new and unseen data categories. Traditional methods typically combine supervised pretraining with self-supervised learning to create models, and then employ clustering for category identification. However, these approaches tend to become overly tailored to known categories, failing to fully resolve the core issue. Hence, we propose to integrate the feedback from LLMs into an active learning paradigm. Specifically, our method innovatively employs uncertainty propagation to select data samples from high-uncertainty regions, which are then labeled using LLMs through a comparison-based prompting scheme. This not only eases the labeling task …

Generalized Graph Prompt: Toward A Unification Of Pre-Training And Downstream Tasks On Graphs, Xingtong Yu, Zhenghao Liu, Yuan Fang, Et Al.
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Graphs can model complex relationships between objects, enabling a myriad of Web applications such as online page/article classification and social recommendation. While graph neural networks (GNNs) have emerged as a powerful tool for graph representation learning, in an end-to-end supervised setting, their performance heavily relies on a large amount of task-specific supervision. To reduce labeling requirement, the 'pre-train, fine-tune' and 'pre-train, prompt' paradigms have become increasingly common. In particular, prompting is a popular alternative to fine-tuning in natural language processing, which is designed to narrow the gap between pre-training and downstream objectives in a task-specific manner. However, existing study of …

Controlled Drug Delivery And Cellular Activities From Electrospun Fibers, Diala Bani Mustafa
Mechanical Engineering Theses
Electrospun drug-eluting fibers have demonstrated potential applications in topical drug delivery, where modulations of drug releases were achieved through polymer fiber compositions. In this study, blend fibers of polycaprolactone (PCL) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) at various compositions were electrospun from 10 wt% of polymer solutions to encapsulate a model drug of ibuprofen (IBP). Results showed that average polymer solution viscosities determined the electrospinning parameters and the resulting average fiber diameters. In vitro release of IBP suggested a transition from a gradual release to a fast release when increasing PEO contents in the PCL/PEO blend fibers up to 120 minutes. In …

The owner of the laundromat by the corner of my temporarily sublet room in New York once told me his life story randomly on the last day I went to dry my bedding. We had never spoken before because we both weren't sure if the other spoke Mandarin.
It’s a long and intricate one, so long and intricate that he could write his own book and become the protagonist of a realist novel. If one word could describe this world and the life we all live, it should be “Wuchang.” According to various authoritative Chinese-to-English dictionaries, it could mean unpredictable, …

Repair Rolodex: Exchanges, Changes, And Patchwork Parables, Ethan Howard
Masters Theses
This book is an index of nine exchanges with strangers whom I met online through email Listservs or by word of mouth. In these transactions, I offered to repair broken things for a trade-in-kind payment. Through the brief relationship between owner and designer, each interaction suggests that an object is almost never entirely obsolete despite its perceived obsolescence.
At the core of these trades is a grassroots protest of the landfill and a critique of our global capitalist commerce system. The apparent desire for and nature of these trades demonstrates that stories make our objects meaningful. Each interplay studies peoples’ …

A journey is a chance to better oneself, to go and come back anew. This kind of pilgrimage does not only happen in the spectacular realm of far-off travels. Often it happens where the soles of one’s feet comprehend the curvature of the land. Then, without forewarning, time opens a sliding door that appears on the recognized ground. Stepping in, the world is realized in a new way.
The writings that strike my tongue with ravishing bittersweet flavors are fictional narratives, with voyages that sail through day and night, disguised as lovely prose while critically probing the world. This written …
A Hard-Boiled Hero In An Atomized World: Manuel Vázquez Montalbán’S El Hombre De Mi Vida And Milenio Carvalho Lament Neoliberal Alienation, José Ortigas
Modern Languages & Literature
Manuel Vázquez Montalbán’s Pepe Carvalho detective novels comprise a seminal series, spanning eighteen novels from 1972 to 2004, that consolidated the novela negra as a popular, denunciatory genre in Spain. While much has been written about the early entries in the series, the latter novels, namely El hombre de mi vida (2000), Milenio I: Rumbo a Kabul, and Milenio II: En las antípodas (2004), have not received similar attention. Critics like Colmeiro, Balibrea, and Nichols have accurately read these novels as a denunciation of the most evident negative consequences of globalization at the turn of the new millennium, principally gentrification, …

Infinite Plane: Metaphysical Architecture + Digital Space, Isabella Ruggiero
Masters Theses
In her book, The Pearly Gates of Cyberspace: A History of Space from Dante to The Internet (1999) science writer/artist Margaret Wertheim posits that cosmology is fundamentally based on how humans interpret space and situate themselves within it. Today's scientific view portrays the fabric of the universe as ubiquitous and undifferentiated in its substance, effectively a single space. In contrast, the medieval perspective delineated space into discrete entities with defined properties—in the case of Christian cosmology, through Heaven, Hell and Purgatory, separate planes with distinct material and metaphysical conditions. However, in the digital age, a new spatial cosmology has emerged, …

Room To Grieve: The Space Of Solace In Public Life, Lauren Blonde
Masters Theses
An essential tension in everyday life is that we spend the majority of our time inside working while we fight our own secret battles. Grief is one of the most profound shared experiences among humans, and one for which we have nearly no space in public life. Our world has often pushed grief to the realm of the religious and the private, offering temporary reprieve. But where do we go when we’re at work at 2pm, struck with the unavoidable and irregular wave of grief, at our desks on the fourth floor?
This thesis seeks to understand spaces we know …

Medieval And Modern: Celtic Mythology Through The Lens Of Urban Fantasy, L. E. Martchenke
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
My project, “Medieval and Modern: Celtic Mythology Through the Lens of Urban Fantasy” is the result of my interest and investment in Celtic mythology, and more specifically Irish mythology, most of our knowledge of which comes from records in the medieval period, made by Christian monks. I pursued research into Medieval Celtic myth and folklore to gain a deeper understanding of those stories of mythological figures and heroes. With that knowledge and genuine love for the source material, in this thesis, I have crafted three individual and distinct stories that capture mythological elements, such as a prominent Folk Hero or …
