An Experimental Study Of Supervised Machine Learning Techniques For Minor Class Prediction Utilizing Kernel Density Estimation: Factors Impacting Model Performance, Abdullah Mana Alfarwan
Dissertations
This dissertation examined classification outcome differences among four popular individual supervised machine learning (ISML) models (logistic regression, decision tree, support vector machine, and multilayer perceptron) when predicting minor class membership within imbalanced datasets. The study context and the theoretical population sampled focus on one aspect of the larger problem of student retention and dropout prediction in higher education (HE): identification.
This study differs from current literature by implementing an experimental design approach with simulated student data that closely mirrors HE situational and student data. Specifically, this study tested the predictive ability of the four ISML classification models (CLS) under experimentally …
The Securities And Environment Commission? The Sec Greenhouse Gas Disclosure Rule For Investment Advisers And Companies And The Fight Against Administrative Overreach, Isaiah P. Harlan
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This article discusses the 2022 Supreme Court case West Virginia v. EPA in which the Supreme Court utilized the Major Questions Doctrine to analyze the EPA’s Clean Power Plan. After detailing the litigation leading up to and the ultimate decision in West Virginia v. EPA, I describe the SEC’s proposed rule requiring enhanced environmental disclosures and analyze the cited statutory authority in the proposed rule. Based upon the statutory and case law analysis that I have done, I conclude that the SEC has acted outside of the scope of its congressionally delegated authority.

CONTEXT: Prostate cancer is a molecularly heterogeneous disease that is amenable to diagnostic testing to identify patients potentially eligible for personalised treatments inform familial risk and provide relevant information about potential prognosis. Several guidelines support the integration of genomic testing in a shared decision-making framework so that both health care professionals (HCPs) and patients are involved in determining the best treatment approach.
OBJECTIVE: To review current guidelines on molecular diagnostic testing for homologous recombination repair (HRR) gene alterations in patients with metastatic prostate cancer, with the aim of providing practical considerations for effective guideline implementation and establishment of an appropriate …

RNA interference (RNAi) is more efficient in coleopteran insects than other insects. StaufenC (StauC), a coleopteran-specific double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)-binding protein, is required for efficient RNAi in coleopterans. We investigated the function of StauC in the intracellular transport of dsRNA into the cytosol, where dsRNA is digested by Dicer enzymes and recruited by Argonauts to RNA-induced silencing complexes. Confocal microscopy and cellular organelle fractionation studies have shown that dsRNA is trafficked through the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in coleopteran Colorado potato beetle (CPB) cells. StauC is localized to the ER in CPB cells, and StauC-knockdown caused the accumulation of dsRNA in the …

The Association Of Acute Stress And Single Leg Balance, Theodore W. Gehrig Iii
The Association Of Acute Stress And Single Leg Balance, Theodore W. Gehrig Iii
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Chronic low back pain is a widespread and expensive societal burden that is routinely near the top of the list of reasons people live with a disability. There is an undeniable connection between low back pain and psychological stress, and it has long been accepted that stress comes as a consequence of the burden of pain. Our group sought to determine if the inverse of this paradigm might be true: that stress may actually play a role in the etiology of low back pain through its influence on neuromuscular control and strategies for balance stability. In this dissertation, we include …

Effects Of Electrotherapy On Pain And Mobility, Pablo Mleziva
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Introduction: Neck chronic pain is one of the most common problems in people today. However, people do not always seek medical treatment for their pain. Subclinical or mild pain generally does not prompt people to seek medical treatment. Consequences of this type of pain can be anxiety, disability and proprioception problems. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) recommends transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) as an intervention to treat neck pain with mobility deficits. TENS for the treatment of pain has been used for many years; however, there is still an “efficacy-impasse” for the use of TENS despite half a …

E6 Inhibtion-Mediated Combinatorial Therapy For Hpv+ Hnscc, Sonia Whang
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
High-risk human papillomaviruses (HPV) are the causative agents of virtually all cases of cervical cancer and up to 80% of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Current treatment options include chemo- and radiotherapy, though the effectiveness of these therapies is limited by the viral oncoprotein E6, which disrupts apoptotic pathways by binding to and accelerating the degradation of molecules such as p53 and caspase- 8. Our hypothesis was that inhibiting E6 and rescuing the apoptotic mediators would increase the effectiveness of apoptotic agents. The aims of this study were to first, develop an HPV+ HNSCC xenograft model to test …

Understanding the fate and transport of lead (Pb) in different environments is key in the environmental mitigation of lead (Pb) …
The Needless Search For A Founding-Era "Hearsay" Definition, Jeffrey Bellin
The Needless Search For A Founding-Era "Hearsay" Definition, Jeffrey Bellin
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Modern Confrontation Clause doctrine permits only unconfronted “out-of-court statements that would have been admissible in a criminal case at the time of the founding.” To operationalize this concept, the Supreme Court identifies “testimonial hearsay” as the Clause’s primary concern. Its opinions regularly dive into the historical record to refine what counts as “testimonial” but ignore that record in defining “hearsay.” This omission cannot last. Cases in the lower courts, and one on the Court’s recent docket, concern testimonial but (arguably) non-hearsay statements. And while confrontation jurisprudence is supposed to be tied to founding-era evidence law, the “hearsay” definition, casually referenced …
New And Useful Improvements: The Role Of Institutional Culture, Leadership, Incentives, And Regulation In 30 Years Of Legal Education Since The Maccrate Report, Greg Brandes
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
New and useful improvements – in the words of the patent statute – have emerged from legal education’s pursuit of seamlessly developing contributing members of the legal profession, as the 1992 MacCrate Report advocated. These include the widespread adoption of distance learning techniques for better teaching and assessment, course pedagogy that is more inclusive for students with diverse learning needs, and a new subset of the academy schooled and interested in the science of teaching and learning. But it has not been easy.
Efforts to improve legal education have sometimes foundered and other times flourished because of varying faculty and …

This study reviewed the research-based PLC implementation strategies used at one small middle school. The main research question was: How can PLCs work effectively for small middle schools and singleton teachers? Other related questions were:
● How can PLCs feel relevant to our elective area teachers?
● What determines a successful PLC?
● Should middle …
