Selfown, Richard Hollman
Scenic Design: Ariadne Auf Naxos, Riley Lathrom
Scenic Design: Ariadne Auf Naxos, Riley Lathrom
Student Theses
riadne auf Naxos was made in collaboration between librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal and composer Richard Strauss between 1911 and 1916. While it was not the first or last project the pair would do together, it was one that dared to reinvent the form of early 20th-century German opera. Both artists understood that, in order to evolve with the modern world, their art form needed to reflect the changing culture around them. Hofmannstal envisioned “a totally unified creation of the contributing art forms, harmoniously and inseparably blended into a superior vehicle of expression” (Davidsen et al.) I find this mindset one …
Fascism Usa: Class And Identity Politics In The Age Of Trump, Marc Edelman
Fascism Usa: Class And Identity Politics In The Age Of Trump, Marc Edelman
Publications and Research
This essay argues that Trump’s triumph in the 2024 presidential contest represents the consolidation of an oligarchical authoritarian project, backed by a multi-class and (surprisingly, for some) multi-racial electorate. It brought intensified state and freelance attacks on immigrants, labor unions, women, LGBTQ+ people, journalists, civil servants, assorted “political enemies,” and other groups that the MAGA movement targets. It is institutionalizing authoritarian governance structures in ways that will be exceedingly difficult to undo. The paper first addresses the experience of growing up in the shadow of fascism. It analyzes various sectors that supported Trump and the impacts of inflation, incumbency, economic …
Self-Fashioning In Contemporary Figurative Painting, Hal Hardin
Self-Fashioning In Contemporary Figurative Painting, Hal Hardin
School of Art Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper positions my painting practice as a form of resistance to historical constructions of gender, identity, and visibility, shaped by my experience as a queer, nonbinary person navigating womanhood in the American South. Drawing on Stephen Greenblatt’s concept of self-fashioning and Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, I argue that Western figurative painting has long disciplined the feminine body, exploiting it and commodifying it into an easily consumable object.
In response, I appropriate and distort these visual conventions. My figures refuse to behave: they stretch, slouch, and linger in ambiguity, resisting fixed interpretation. Placed in spaces of visibility and …
A Modern Cabinet Of Curiosities: Patronage, Narrative, And The Foundations Of American Art At Crystal Bridges Museum Of American Art, Amelia Quinlen
A Modern Cabinet Of Curiosities: Patronage, Narrative, And The Foundations Of American Art At Crystal Bridges Museum Of American Art, Amelia Quinlen
School of Art Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines the 2025 reinstallation of the “Foundations of American Art” galleries at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas as a case study through which to analyze how museum narratives are constructed, negotiated, and presented in the twenty-first century. Drawing on the historiography of museum display, from early modern cabinets of curiosity to nineteenth-century salon-style exhibitions, it argues that galleries function not as neutral containers for objects, but as interpretive frameworks shaped by curatorial decisions, spatial organization, and institutional context. While the reinstallation positions itself as a reconsideration of the “foundations” of American art through thematic …

Developing Empathy And Social Awareness Through Anti-Bullying Education, Alma Garcia-Peralta
Developing Empathy And Social Awareness Through Anti-Bullying Education, Alma Garcia-Peralta
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Children in Elementary School have not yet developed effective emotional awareness and social skills. Bullying behavior often occurs when a child cannot clearly express their feelings, does not understand others perspective, and interacts with others in a disrespectful way. Children who have not been taught these skills may have difficulty recognizing how their behavior affects others or responding appropriately in social situations. When children are taught about their emotions and are given opportunities to develop and practice social skills, they are more likely to demonstrate empathy, build positive peer relationships, and reduce the likelihood of engaging in bullying behaviors. To …
Supporting Newcomer Students Through Social-Emotional Learning, Maria Evelin Cabrera Ramirez
Supporting Newcomer Students Through Social-Emotional Learning, Maria Evelin Cabrera Ramirez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Newcomer students, who are new arrivals to the United States, often face emotional challenges when adjusting to a new school such as outbursts. These emotional challenges can affect their relationships, their confidence, and their ability to learn effectively. When newcomer students learn skills to cope with adjusting, they become more successful in school and have a stronger relationship with adults and peers. Therefore, to help in this situation, I have created a two-day lesson for newcomer students in the fifth grade from Elkhorn Elementary School in Castroville, California.
Increasing Preschool Students' Awareness Of The Importance Of Good Hygiene, Hannah Valerie Verhoek
Increasing Preschool Students' Awareness Of The Importance Of Good Hygiene, Hannah Valerie Verhoek
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Many preschoolers have not yet developed the skills necessary for maintaining basic hygiene. Without the early introduction of hygiene skills, preschoolers may not maintain personal cleanliness, thereby increasing their risk of contracting an illness. When young children learn about the importance of good hygiene, they can create healthy routines, such as washing hands, brushing teeth, and practicing sanitation practices to keep germs away. To increase their hygiene skills, I created a one-day lesson for the preschool students, located in the Early Development program on the California State University of Monterey Bay campus.

Increasing Emotion Recognition And Self-Regulation In Second-Grade Migrant Students, Dominik I. Vasquez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Some elementary school students who are migrant students may experience emotions related to their migration and being in a new environment, which they may not yet know how to manage. When young children do not know how to manage their emotions, they may feel isolated in their experience and face more consequences in school for emotional outbursts. Teaching students how to manage their emotions may help them feel less alone in their immigration experience and may help them improve their relationships. To effectively address this issue, I developed a two-day lesson for second-grade migrant students at Virginia Rocca Barton Elementary …

College Pathways And Requirements For Immigrant Parents Of High School Students, Yesel Fernandez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Some parents, especially immigrant parents, know that college is important, but they do not understand how the college system works and how to get there. When parents are unaware, their high-school-aged children might not get the support they need to make good decisions about college in the future or what career paths to take. When parents learn about the benefits of going to college or university, they can better understand the process of what steps their students need to take to be eligible and apply, and can help and encourage their kids. In order to address this issue, I created …

Improving Emotional Regulation Among Kindergarten Students, Itzel Hernandez-Rodriguez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Many young elementary school children have not yet developed effective emotional regulation skills. Children who lack these skills may use coping strategies like isolation, aggressive behavior, and emotional suppression that may be harmful for themselves and their peers. When children learn how to manage their emotions, they are able to use effective coping strategies to calm down, may improve their academic performance, and strengthen their relationships. Therefore, I have created a one day, fifty minute lesson for kindergarten elementary school children from Amesti Elementary School in Watsonville, California.
The Role Of Music In Storytelling, Eliot Z. Tenberg
The Role Of Music In Storytelling, Eliot Z. Tenberg
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Music is often thought of as a background element in storytelling, something that enhances a scene but is not essential to its meaning. However, this perspective overlooks the powerful role music plays in shaping how stories are understood and experienced. Across film, theater, and even interactive media, music does far more than accompany images or dialogue. It actively guides emotional response, constructs narrative meaning, and connects audiences to stories on a deeper psychological level. Unlike visual or verbal storytelling alone, music has the unique ability to communicate emotion without explicit explanation. A shift in melody, harmony, or rhythm can signal …
Bridging The Gap To Higher Education: Increasing Parental Knowledge On University Systems And Financial Aid, Maria G. Rosales Marquez
Bridging The Gap To Higher Education: Increasing Parental Knowledge On University Systems And Financial Aid, Maria G. Rosales Marquez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Many parents of high school students are unaware about the different university systems and financial aid options available to their students for attending college. Without this awareness, parents may not accept all of the financial aid that is offered to their student and may make poor financial decisions such as accepting loans and getting in debt to pay for their child’s education. More awareness about university systems and financial options can help parents support their adolescents’ pursuit of higher education and navigating costs. In order to address this issue, I created a 90-minute presentation for parents who have students in …

Empowering English Language Learners For Academic Success, Tiger L. Rendon
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This capstone explores how future educators in California can best support English Language Learners, who make up a large portion of the student population that strives for academic success. Despite ELL students being common in elementary school classrooms, the strategies that service teachers use are based on their own knowledge and experience, which, although beneficial, can be difficult to adapt in an ever-changing environment. This research was conducted to help future educators understand that, even without resources, many classroom strategies can empower ELL students and promote success. Through a literature review, an anonymous survey, and interviews with seven elementary school …
