Range Land Of America And Some Research On Its Management, Laurence A. Stoddart Apr 1945

Range Land Of America And Some Research On Its Management, Laurence A. Stoddart

Faculty Honor Lectures

Although grazing of livestock has been a practice and a profession of man almost from his beginning only recently has range management reached anything approaching a pre~ cise science. Although ' trials and errors over the years brought to light much practical methodology for assuring high production from grazing land, still it remained for the plant physiologist and ecologist to find the whys and wherefores, and to advance new methods and new thoughts which promise to increase productivity still further and at the same time maintain the great range resource.

The peculiar land situation that marked America in her forma~ …

An Ecological Study Of The Floodplain Forest Along The White River System In Indiana, Mordie B. Lee Apr 1945

An Ecological Study Of The Floodplain Forest Along The White River System In Indiana, Mordie B. Lee

Butler University Botanical Studies

As pointed out by Potzger and Friesner (9), Conard (3) and Cain (1), a mere empirical description of a forest means little as a definite presentation of conditions operating, and becomes nil in comparative studies. Most of the work on forest ecology in the United States has considered upland climax communities, and very little attention has been given the great transitional forests of the floodplains, and to the writer's knowledge only Oosting (8) has given specific quantitative data on the sociology of the species constituting the crown cover of the floodplain forests.

The present study of 20 stands was made …

A Quadrat Study Of Meltzer Woods, Shelby County, Indiana, Carl O. Keller Apr 1945

A Quadrat Study Of Meltzer Woods, Shelby County, Indiana, Carl O. Keller

Butler University Botanical Studies

As one travels eastward on return from a trip through the prairie states, perhaps the most characteristic feature of the landscape which starts him humming the strains of, "Back Home Again in Indiana," are the beautiful woodlands along the highways of our state. These woodlands are remnants of the great Eastern deciduous forest upon which the pioneers gazed with amazement as they penetrated the interior of our continent. The botanist and Nature lover of the present day ofttimes wish they could have had the thrill of looking at the stately array of massive-trunked, majestic giants in that forest primeval. There …

Life Histories And Ecology Of Iowa Midges (Tendipedidae). I. The Genus Tanytarsus, U. A. Hauber Jan 1945

Life Histories And Ecology Of Iowa Midges (Tendipedidae). I. The Genus Tanytarsus, U. A. Hauber

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

As defined by Edwards (1929) the genus Tanytarsus differs from Chironomus (Tendipes) in its hairy wings, bare squamae, and the horizontal or indistinct radio-medial cross vein (r-m). However, the status of the genus is very unsatisfactory and a revision of the group and its related genera will probably result in placing the species here described into another genus, probably into more than one genus. Moreover, the group has had little attention in this country and there are few types available for comparison. Under the circumstances any attempt to classify specimens is done subject to future corrections. The assignment of the …

All Theses

This study is primarily concerned with the spatial pattern of deaths in the city of Houston, Texas, It will mention briefly, however, scare of the research that have previously emphasized the importance and the relation of "place" to sooial phenomena.

Theoretical Statements And Researchers Of Other Scholars

Robert E. Park has been the pioneer figure in America in the application of the ecological approach to the study of human relations. The term ecology was borrowed from the study of plants and their environment and came into Social Science as a logical conclusion. to human or anthropogeography.

Effects Of Drought, Dust, And Intensity Of Grazing On Cover And Yield Of Short-Grass Pastures, F. W. Albertson, J. E. Weaver Jan 1944

Effects Of Drought, Dust, And Intensity Of Grazing On Cover And Yield Of Short-Grass Pastures, F. W. Albertson, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The vast range lands of western Kansas occupy approximately one half of that area. They are now recovering from the terrible destruction wrought by overgrazing, drought, and dust-burial during the past decade. Since grass is man's most powerful ally in soil and water conservation, since pastures are tremendously important as the cheapest and most satisfactory feed for cattle, and since the recovery of the western range is not only an economic problem of great importance but a phenomenon of outstanding ecological interest, the redevelopment of the plant cover warrants careful investigation.

Correlation Of Elongation In Primary Secondary And Tertiary Axes Of Pinus Strobus And P. Resinosa, Ray C. Friesner

Butler University Botanical Studies

Studies dealing with elongation in various species of conifers have been published by a number of investigators but, so far as is known to the writer, only one of these has considered the question of correlation of elongation between primary, secondary and tertiary axes.

A Study Of Fluctuations In Coyote Numbers And Possible Causes, Sherwin B. Griswold Jul 1942

A Study Of Fluctuations In Coyote Numbers And Possible Causes, Sherwin B. Griswold

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This paper reports the findings of a study of coyote numbers, with particular reference to fluctuations, their periodicity, if any, and their possible causes. In order to answer these questions studies of bounty payments were made in four centrally located counties of Kansas. The counties selected for this study were Ellis, Russell, Edwards, and Harvey. The location of these counties is shown in figure I on page 5. A record of these bounty payments was secured by checking through the records in the office of the county clerk of these counties for all years in which records were on file.

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The objectives of the studies reported in this paper were: (1) to obtain an analysis of the vegetation in tall and short grass range lands, (2) to observe the activities of cattle on the range, and (3) to determine the effects of grazing upon vegetation.
