A Study In Soil Moisture, Acidity And Evaporation In An Upland Woods At Turkey Run State Park, Mary Fritsche Cundiff May 1949

A Study In Soil Moisture, Acidity And Evaporation In An Upland Woods At Turkey Run State Park, Mary Fritsche Cundiff

Butler University Botanical Studies

Structure and development of vegetation has reflected the biological value of the habitat, for vegetation responds to changes in habitat readily; and habitat, in turn, is determined, in its gross characteristics, by climate. However, a uniform climate does not exist even in a small geographical area because the area is modified by peculiar features of soil and physiography. The variety of habitats, e.g., in dissected land surfaces, is in direct proportion to these modifications of the macroclimate. Such features, while perhaps not affecting the arboreal cover, will determine different accents of the secondary and herbaceous layers as pointed out by …

Early Plant Collections Return To Texas, Lloyd H. Shinners Apr 1949

Early Plant Collections Return To Texas, Lloyd H. Shinners

Field and Laboratory

A herbarium is the means by which the plant life of a large area is sampled and made conveniently accessible for study. Texas, with the largest area and one of the most varied floras of the United States, is botanically one of the most poorly known. Although its botanical exploration has been going on for more than a hundred and twenty-five years (it began in the summer of 1820, when Edwin James, surgeon of Major Long's expedition to the Rocky Mountains, collected a few plants along the Canadian River in the Texas Panhandle), the early collections were sent elsewhere, and …

The Iowa Cooperative Fisheries Research Program, Kenneth D. Carlander Jan 1949

The Iowa Cooperative Fisheries Research Program, Kenneth D. Carlander

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Iowa State Conservation Commission and Iowa State College cooperate in a program of research, extension and education in the field of fishery management. This cooperative program, initiated in 1941, was patterned after that of the earlier established Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit (Scott, 1939). The research work is carried on by the permanent staff at the college and by graduate students some of whom are on fellowship appointments. The problems being investigated include those deemed most important in the management of Iowa's fishery resources and include work on streams, natural lakes, reservoirs, artificial inpoundments, and farm ponds.

A Study Of The Social Functions Of The Skidrow Rooming House In Stockton, George William Korber Jan 1949

A Study Of The Social Functions Of The Skidrow Rooming House In Stockton, George William Korber

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to report the results of an investigation of skidrow rooming houses in Stockton, and to consider these results in terms of the social functions of the community. It is hoped that the data collected in making this study and the resultant generalizations may be of some public value, should this community or other communities of the California Central Valley decide to look more searchingly into one of their conflict-breeding areas.

A Study Of The Effects Of Some Chemical And Physical Factors On Plankton In An Artificial Lake, Archie Garnett Smither Aug 1948

A Study Of The Effects Of Some Chemical And Physical Factors On Plankton In An Artificial Lake, Archie Garnett Smither

Master's Theses

It has been well established that chemical and physical factors exert a marked effect upon the plankton population in bodies of water. However, the literature reveals the fact that the same chemical and physical factors not only produce a different effect upon plankton in different bodies of water, but are not consistent in their effects upon plankton in like bodies of water. For example, Birge and Juday (1911) made a study of 150 lakes, not widely separated in distance or varying in topographic conditions. These lakes were also of the same age, yet all were individual as to the amount …

An Ecological Study Of Negro Juvenile Delinquency In Jacksonville, Florida, 1940-1947, Lucile J. B. Shropshier

Student Work

Problem of the Study: - This problem will be concerned with a study of Juvenile Delinquency among Negroes in Jacksonville, Florida for the years 1940-1947. Background: - In this study we employed the survey method. The author's main technique was the personal interview with Juvenile Court officers, school principals, teachers, Parental Home Records, and records of public and private agencies and Juvenile Court records. The other techniques used were to gather and analyze data on housing economic status, health, recreation, churches, social agencies and other organizations or prophalaties that may help in the problem. Delinquency as a responsibility of the …

Fossil Diatoms From Lakeville Bog, Indiana, Jack R. Weaver May 1948

Fossil Diatoms From Lakeville Bog, Indiana, Jack R. Weaver

Butler University Botanical Studies

In the study of diatoms, bogs furnish an excellent record of diatom flora during the post glacial period. As a result of the Late Wisconsin glacial activity in Northern Indiana was dotted with numerous lakes, many of which are of the kettle-hole type and have become extinct due to deposition of marl and peat. In many bodies of water where diatoms are present, a portion of this sedimentation is composed of the silicified walls of the diatom cells which remain unaltered after the death of an organism. Thus diatom become deposited and preserved in stratigraphic order.

Progress In Succession In The Pennington Grove Of Pinus Virginiana, John E. Potzger, Esther W. Potzger May 1948

Progress In Succession In The Pennington Grove Of Pinus Virginiana, John E. Potzger, Esther W. Potzger

Butler University Botanical Studies

In 1932 the senior author reported on an ecological survey in stands of Pinus virginiana in Munroe County, Indiana, viz. the Pennington grove near Weimer Lake, two miles sw. of Bloomington, on highway 45, and the Christie-Freeman groves, four miles nw. of Ellettsville. At the time of the 1931 survey very little ground cover had developed in either of these groves. The repesent study considered only the Pennington grove. This stand has seen no decided cultural modifications since the 1931 survey. Periodic surveys were made in the stand by various groups of ecology students of Butler University. These surveys showed …

Sound As A Tool In Marine Ecology, From Data On Biological Noises And The Deep Scattering Layer, Martin W. Johnson Jan 1948

Sound As A Tool In Marine Ecology, From Data On Biological Noises And The Deep Scattering Layer, Martin W. Johnson

Journal of Marine Research

In studies of specific populations or communities of different animals, the investigator is concerned largely with relative concentrations of individuals and with their feeding and breeding behavior, migratory habits, etc., as individuals or as groups. Information on these aspects is fundamental to an analysis and understanding of the faciors that operate as controls within the population.

Water Tables In Marine Beaches, K. O. Emery, J. F. Foster

Journal of Marine Research

Beach slopes, sand movements, and sand composition have been studied by a number of organizations and individuals, but the interstitial water and the possible interrelations between beach characteristics and changing water levels within the beach seem to have received little attention....

Observations On Some Helminths Parasitic In Ohio Turtles, Robert L. Rausch Sep 1947

Observations On Some Helminths Parasitic In Ohio Turtles, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The examination of a number of turtles, collected in Ohio, has disclosed at least thirty-three species of parasitic helminths. Little information is available on the parasites of turtles in the Central States, and it is the purpose of this paper to present data resulting from examinations made on 128 turtles, of seven species.

An Ecological Study Of The Pocket Gopher In An Sandy Loam Area Of Ellis County, Kansas., Benjamin Mosier Jul 1947

An Ecological Study Of The Pocket Gopher In An Sandy Loam Area Of Ellis County, Kansas., Benjamin Mosier

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This thesis is an ecological study of the pocket gopher in a sandy loam area of Ellis County, Kansas. The economic importance of the pocket gopher varies with the type of land and with its use. It is rather obvious that the economic importance of the gopher changed with the widespread advent of the settlers into Western United States. From the viewpoint of extensive agricultural practices, the pocket gopher must be considered a menace on cultivated lands. On non-agricultural districts the condition is in general reversed. Most ecologists recognize a definite benefit from burrowing animals on wild land.

An Ecological Study Of The Negro In Ward Seven, Murphy Cleophas Williams May 1947

An Ecological Study Of The Negro In Ward Seven, Murphy Cleophas Williams

Student Work

The concept of the term "ecology' as it relates to sociology and social research is well interpreeted in Gist and Halbert's book, Urban Society… From the above explanation and from the interpretations of the term "ecology" in the writings of Park and Eurgess and others, we get the idea that an ecological study involves the spatial, selective and distributive functions and melations of human beings in a given geographical and cultural area, and that these functions and relations characterize the forms and types of social interaction.

An Ecological Study Of The Klein Woods, Jennings County, Indiana, Carl O. Keller Feb 1947

An Ecological Study Of The Klein Woods, Jennings County, Indiana, Carl O. Keller

Butler University Botanical Studies

The primeval forest of Indiana was without doubt representative of some of the most magnificent sections of the great eastern deciduous region. In a previous paper (9) we described briefly the fate of our hardwoods, and pointed out that only small tracts of comparatively undisturbed stands remain for observation. Since reports on the early forests are rather vague, and based on superficial observation rather than on quantitative data, it is somewhat difficult to gain from them a true picture of the phytosociology of these forests prior to time of settlement. Qualitative and quantitative studies of the remaining small stands referred …

A Salinometer For Use In Brackish Water, William S. Von Arx Jan 1947

A Salinometer For Use In Brackish Water, William S. Von Arx

Journal of Marine Research

In principal this salinometer is a "battery" composed of a pair of dissimilar metals immersed in the brackish water of the field as an electrolyte. Between these dissimilar metals there exists a potential difference which is practically independent of the concentration of salts in the electrolyte over a very wide range. However, the salt concentration has a marked effect upon the conductivity of the electrolyte. If the measuring circuit has constant resistance, the only change of resistance in the total circuit is that due to the change of conductivity of the water in which the cell is immersed. Since the …
