This dissertation delves into the experiences of the Jamaican immigrants who ventured to New York City in pursuit of a new life. Their stories encapsulate the challenges, triumphs, and cultural amalgamation inherent in the immigrant experience. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of socio-economic complexities, cultural adaptation, and the quest for identity in a foreign land. Their resilience in navigating these challenges illuminates the resourcefulness and determination embedded within immigrant communities. This study investigated the influence of needs satisfaction and support on the well-being of physicians deployed in underserved communities. Basic Psychological Needs Theory is used as the theoretical framework, positing that fulfilling the three basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness can foster well-being and optimal functioning. The results revealed that meeting basic psychological needs alongside workplace conditions and individual characteristics can play distinct roles in promoting emotional, psychological, and social well-being as well as reducing the likelihood of anxiety and depression. In Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions, the material world is understood to contain access points to the transcendent. An icon may move the awestruck believer to emotional engagement and reflection on moral and religious themes. Personality dispositions potentiating the experience of being moved in religious aesthetic contexts have not been thoroughly studied. The present article describes the development and testing of a cross-sectional study into potential belief and personality-related predictors of being moved by sacred art in a lab environment evocative of a holy site. International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This essay presents the dreams of a long-term patient over the course of treatment in order to explore the transpersonal potential of the relational unconscious—those open channels of unconscious communication between people. At a key moment, the patient brings in the therapist’s own childhood dream, serving to break a period of impasse and reset the therapy. Dreams and their interpretation reveal the essence of fractal consciousness, by which a sliver of experience can shed light on the whole of the psyche. A fractal model of understanding suggests open boundaries between self/other and self/world at multiple levels. The deep intimacy of …

Art pluralism is the view that there is no single, correct account of what art is. Instead, art is understood through a plurality of art concepts and with considerations that are different for particular arts. Although avowed pluralists have retained the word “art” in their discussions, it is natural to ask whether the considerations that motivate pluralism should lead us to abandon art talk altogether; that is, should pluralism lead to eliminativism? This paper addresses arguments both for and against this move. We ultimately argue that pluralism allows one to retain the word “art”, if one wants it, but only …

From 1964 to 1976, the United States military deployed troops to Thailand as part of its strategic operations during the Vietnam War. Most of these military personnel were stationed in Isan, a northeastern region of Thailand, due to its proximity to key bombing targets in Indochina. Historically, Isan was affiliated with Laos and was assimilated into Thai governance in the late eighteenth century. Until the 1950s, most of Isan’s population resided in rural, agricultural communities and were politically, economically, and culturally marginalized by mainstream Thai society. The Thai state’s internal colonization exacerbated socioeconomic disparities for Isan peasants, severely restricting avenues …

This thesis is an examination of A Brighter Summer Day (1991, dir. Edward Yang) and Rebels of the Neon God (1992, dir. Tsai Ming-liang) as two Taiwan New Wave films depicting juvenile delinquency in settings of political transition. The term microbial dysbiosis describes the interaction of microorganisms with cancerous cells, facilitating tumor progression and metastasis. Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), a cariogenic bacterium, employs its adherence and acid-tolerant capabilities to collaborate with other bacteria in invading host cells, thereby promoting oral squamous cell carcinoma and other extra-oral diseases. In contrast, Lactobacillus casei (L. casei) exhibits probiotic properties known to assist in the treatment and prevention of intestinal cancers, fostering microbial homeostasis. When grown together, S. mutans and L. casei engage in a competitive relationship, with L. casei hindering the dominance of S. mutans. However, the intricacies of this relationship …

This thesis is based on two months of ethnographic research on a farm/apothecary homestead in Outaouais, Québec. There I strived to unearth the approaches both botanical and market employed by Twin Lakes Apothecary to better understand and contextualize the contemporary manifestations of ethnobotany in Québec. I pursued this primarily through a participant-observer approach in which I opportunistically followed networks of exchange and information to gradually traverse the life history of products and people at the apothecary. In examining the apothecary through such a lens, I illuminate the mythos and notions of production and validity in sectors often described as organic, …
