Reputation And Reality: Revelations Of Monstrosity In Frankenstein And Six Of Crows, Jordyn Fortuna
Reputation And Reality: Revelations Of Monstrosity In Frankenstein And Six Of Crows, Jordyn Fortuna
English Senior Capstone
The main characters in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows reveal the potential within everyone for Monstrosity. This disregard for humanity can stem from many things, but it can also be prevented through community and sympathy. Monstrosity is often misconstrued due to a false perception guided by a sighted bias. In reality, however, characters’ humanity can be shown to the reader through a greater insight into their traumas and intentions. This paper highlights the idea that reputation cannot be trusted, but instead but be further examined to reveal the Monster within.

School Improvement Plan: Enhancing Foundational Skills Instruction, Alexis Weber
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Research indicates that phonological awareness ranks among the most crucial abilities and predictors of future success in reading. Additionally, studies have highlighted the correlation between phonemic awareness and reading proficiency, as well as the deficiency in both pre-service and in-service teachers' understanding of fundamental language constructs. In response to these findings, a school improvement plan has been devised, incorporating a supplementary phonemic awareness program aimed at enhancing students' knowledge and skills in this area. Moreover, the plan entails bolstering teacher expertise through tailored training sessions and further professional development opportunities tailored to address specific needs. This initiative will contribute valuable …

Improving Reading Interventions: A School Improvement Plan, Ivy Leitch
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
This school improvement plan was driven by the researcher’s interest in improving literacy interventions due to an ineffective literacy curriculum. This plan focuses on the essential components of literacy interventions, which research found are phonics, phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, and the science of reading. These components will increase literacy skills in all elementary grades and potentially increase FAST scores. As the district purchases a new literacy curriculum in 2026, these components should be at the forefront of their decision.

Exploring Barriers To Recruitment And Retention In Cancer Clinical Trials Among Underrepresented Populations: Perspectives Of Clinical Trial Research Coordinating Staff, Sumbul Yousafi
Health Science Doctoral Thesis
Background: Clinical trials are crucial in advancing scientific knowledge and interventions and exploring more efficient and safe treatments to improve patient care and health outcomes. The active participation of patients and researchers has made it feasible to conduct clinical trials that have been ground-breaking and become the standardized practice of care; however, the participation of underrepresented populations in clinical trials has been identified to be low. This issue can impact the generalizability of findings from clinical trials and efforts to promote health equity. Appropriate representation from underrepresented populations in clinical trials is vital; it will contribute to equitable healthcare for …

Yun-chien Chang’s Property Law: Comparative, Empirical, and Economic Analysis, is an impressive piece of scholarship. Ten years in the making, Yun-chien has developed the most comprehensive comparative analysis of property law ever undertaken. The effort involved was herculean. He consulted codes in eight different languages and translations into these languages of dozens of others, enlisted the assistance of a small army of research assistants, and solicited the assistance of scholars and lawyers from around the world. The result is nothing less than revelatory. Anyone interested in property law, even if only from the perspective of their own legal system, …
Brandeisian Banking, Kathryn Judge
Brandeisian Banking, Kathryn Judge
Faculty Scholarship
Banking law shapes the structure of the banking system, which in turn shapes the structure of the economy. One of the most significant ways that banking law in the United States traditionally sought to promote Brandeisian values of stability and decentralization was through a combination of carrots and sticks that enabled small banks across the country to thrive. To see this requires a richer understanding of Brandeis as someone who valued not just atomistic competition but also small business and broad flourishing. It also requires a deeper understanding of the ways different parts of banking law worked together during the …

The Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Brady v. Maryland turns sixty this year. The Brady doctrine, which requires the government to disclose favorable and material evidence to the defendant, is one of the most frequently litigated criminal procedure issues. Yet, despite decades of Brady cases in federal and state courts, we still know relatively little about how Brady claims are litigated, adjudicated, and what such claims can tell us about the criminal justice system writ large. Scholars are in the dark about how often Brady violations occur, whether it is primarily the fault of prosecutors or the police, whether violations …

“You Just Haven’T Found The Right Person Yet.”: A Study Of The Relationship Differences Between Asexual And Allosexual Individuals, Faith M. Conway
Honors Theses
Asexuality is an underreported and scarcely researched group. This study aimed to determine relationship and relationship goal differences between asexual and allosexual individuals. Using 134 responses to a Qualtrics survey, the current research found only one self-identified asexual individual and five total Asexuality Identification Scale identified individuals. Results showed little difference between Allosexual and Asexual relationships and relationship goals. There was a significant difference between the realization of an identity different from heterosexual and the self-claiming of an identity name.

The Dynamic Response And Damage Evolution Of High-Strength Concrete, Mohamed Abbas
The Dynamic Response And Damage Evolution Of High-Strength Concrete, Mohamed Abbas
Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations
Concrete stands as the most extensively used construction material in both military and civil structural applications, attributed to its excellent durability and high impact resistance. Over the years, high-strength concrete (HSC) has evolved to withstand higher compressive strengths, making it a viable substitute for conventional concrete (CC) in many applications. Hence, HSC is commonly used for structures and structural elements that are exposed to extreme loading conditions such as hurricanes, wave impacts, ship-bridge collisions, explosions, earthquake loads, etc. The mechanical response of concrete subjected to dynamic loading conditions differs dramatically from its response under quasi-static conditions due to its inherent …

The Gendered Room And The Lock On The Door: Women Writers And The Patriarchy In Virginia Woolf’S A Room Of One's Own, Lauren Kelley
Honors Theses
This thesis analyzes the life of Virginia Woolf and her foundational feminist text, A Room of One’s Own (AROO) to understand women’s need for control in their journey to become Authors through Woolf’s requirements of “500 a year and a room with a lock on the door.” It discusses the significance of becoming a capital A Author and how authorship impacted women’s lives in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and even twentieth centuries. Through a summary of Woolf’s historicizing of women writers’ struggles this thesis investigates the impact these struggles had on how women wrote—often resulting in anger and anonymous authorship. Through …

Drip Water Chemistry Response To Human Activities At Diamond Caverns In Park City, Kentucky, Madison R. High
Honors Theses
This research aims to give insight into factors contributing to seasonal variation of karst cave drip water hydrochemistry relative to surface condition. The study area is a small show cave, Diamond Caverns, located just outside the boundary of Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. Various water chemistry parameters, such as chloride, pH, and temperature were monitored. A YSI EXO2 was deployed to measure the aforementioned parameters at one-hour intervals in a drip water pool starting in November 2023. To discern significant changes in solute concentrations, daily averages were calculated based on the hourly data. Daily averages were then compared to …
A Framework For Managing Disputes Over Intellectual Property Rights In Traditional Knowledge, Stephen R. Munzer
A Framework For Managing Disputes Over Intellectual Property Rights In Traditional Knowledge, Stephen R. Munzer
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
Major controversies in moral and political theory concern the rights, if any, Indigenous peoples should have over their traditional knowledge. Many scholars, including me, have tackled these controversies. This Article addresses a highly important practical issue: Can we come up with a solid framework for resolving disputes over actual or proposed intellectual property rights in traditional knowledge?
Yes, we can. The framework suggested here starts with a preliminary distinction between control rights and income rights. It then moves to four categories that help to understand disputes: nature of the traditional knowledge under dispute; dynamics between named parties to disputes; unnamed …
Reviving Indian Country: Expanding Alaska Native Villages’ Tribal Land Bases Through Fee-To-Trust Acquisitions, Alexis Studler
Reviving Indian Country: Expanding Alaska Native Villages’ Tribal Land Bases Through Fee-To-Trust Acquisitions, Alexis Studler
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
For the last fifty years, the possibility of fee-to-trust acquisitions in Alaska has been precarious at best. This is largely due to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANCSA), which eschewed the traditional reservation system in favor of corporate land ownership and management. Despite its silence on trust acquisitions, ANCSA was and still is cited as the primary prohibition to trust acquisitions in Alaska. Essentially, ANCSA both reduced Indian Country in Alaska and prohibited any opportunities to create it, leaving Alaska Native Villages without the significant territorial jurisdiction afforded to Lower 48 tribes. However, recent policy changes from …
Invariance Of Chsh Parameters When Projecting Weakly Signaling Distribution Into A No Signaling Subspace, Aaditya Paudel
Invariance Of Chsh Parameters When Projecting Weakly Signaling Distribution Into A No Signaling Subspace, Aaditya Paudel
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The seminal 1935 paper by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen (EPR) sparked a fundamental debate in quantum mechanics about the completeness of physical reality through the EPR paradox. They questioned local realism by suggesting that particles could exhibit instantaneous correlations across any distance, challenging classical physics. Bell's theorem (1964) argued that no local hidden variable theory could replicate quantum predictions, introducing Bell's inequalities and their experimental tests. These tests, particularly through violations of Bell's inequalities, confirmed quantum predictions of non-local correlations that local realism could not account for. Quantum theory, while supporting such correlations, adheres to the no-signaling principle to prevent …

Background: Lung function trajectories (LFTs) have been shown to be an important measure of long-term health in asthma. While there is a growing body of metabolomic studies on asthma status and other phenotypes, there are no prospective studies of the relationship between metabolomics and LFTs or their genomic determinants. Methods: We utilized ordinal logistic regression to identify plasma metabolite principal components associated with four previously-published LFTs in children from the Childhood Asthma Management Program (CAMP) (n = 660). The top significant metabolite principal component (PCLF) was evaluated in an independent cross-sectional child cohort, the Genetic Epidemiology of Asthma in Costa …
"I Am Become Death, The Destroyer Of Worlds": Applying Strict Liability To Artificial Intelligence As An Abnormally Dangerous Activity, Renee Henson
Faculty Publications
Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled tools have produced a myriad of injuries, up to and including death. This burgeoning technology has caused scholars to ask questions, such as, How do we create a legal framework for AI? Because AI creators have acknowledged that even they do not know the capacities of their technology for good or bad outcomes, this Article argues that an existing framework, strict liability, is an appropriate fit for harms arising from this new technology because a party need not prove negligence to prevail. Strict liability was uniquely developed to handle those activities that are “abnormally dangerous.” An abnormally …
Nonviolent Drug Offenders Need Treatment--Not Prison: The Solution To Prison Overcrowding In West Virginia, Kendra Amick
Nonviolent Drug Offenders Need Treatment--Not Prison: The Solution To Prison Overcrowding In West Virginia, Kendra Amick
West Virginia Law Review
A tenfold increase in prison populations has occurred due to the policies and laws enacted by the War on Drugs campaign in the United States. This increase is the direct result of a rise in the incarceration of nonviolent drug offenders. Rearrest rates for nonviolent drug-related offenders sentenced to prison are 50%. For those offenders permitted to participate in a drug court program, this rate decreases by over half. In West Virginia, the battle against the opioid epidemic has caused it to become one of the fastest-growing prison populations in the nation. With a fast-emerging crisis on the rise, West …
