Little Bit About Liddle: Big Improvement In Blood Pressure, Shreel Patel, Roy Kondapavuluru, Eunbee Cho, Fatimah Bello, Jian Garcia Cruz
Research Symposium
Background: Liddle syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder associated with abnormalities in function of the collecting tubule sodium channel, also called the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC). ENaC function is increased in the Liddle’s syndrome leading to the manifestations of mineralocorticoid excess symptoms, such as hypertension, hypokalemia, and metabolic alkalosis. The diagnosis is made when these features are seen with low renin and low plasma or urinary aldosterone. Genetic testing is not required for the diagnosis of Liddle syndrome. Liddle's syndrome has an excellent response to amiloride.
Case Presentation: A 56-year-old gentleman, with longstanding uncontrolled hypertension was seen for functional …
Educational Evaluation As Hermes, Ying Ma Dr.
Educational Evaluation As Hermes, Ying Ma Dr.
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
Since the 1980s, educational evaluation has prominently been interwoven with the concepts of measurement and accountability. The reduction of educational evaluation to technical and instrumental processes, ignoring its underlying normative ethical claims and values, is not only undesirable but also detrimental to pursuing educational endeavors. I attempt at a Kuhnian paradigm shift from the measurement and calculation discourse to reframing educational evaluation as Hermes. Educational evaluation as Hermes attends to the messy ground of teaching with ethical dimensions, dwelling in human relationships. I understand educational evaluation as Hermes with three salient dimensions, namely the content of recognizing the divine …

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day
Moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (mPAE; ~60-80 mg/dL) has been found to result in structural alterations to the hippocampus. Although many studies have shown that mPAE impairs performance on hippocampal-dependent tasks, few studies have compared behavior across male and female mPAE rats. Thus, the present study was aimed at comparing performance by male and female mPAE rats in tests of spatial memory and anxiety. Overall, mPAE didn't significantly affect spatial tasks but decreased anxiety-like behaviors.

Pretty Girls Don't Eat Pizza: How An Eating Disorder Taught Me I Am Enough, Hannah Kuhn
Masters Theses
Eating disorders have become one of the most fatal mental disorders, and yet many people still don’t know anything about them. This allows society to misinform people on what this disorder is, and for those suffering from it to feel misunderstood and alone. Patients and their families don’t need more medical advice on the topic. They need to hear a raw, honest and messy story from someone who is not cured, but overtime has found the resources, hope and strength to continue living with it everyday until healing is granted. This is a story that both informs and shows the …

The Crucifixion And Death Of Jesus In The Qur'an And Islamic Scholarship: The "Swoon Theory" And The Medical Perspective, Emmanuel K. Asante
Masters Theses
The crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ is a profound event that holds immense theological significance within Christianity. However, the Islamic perspective as presented in the Qur'an, offers a distinct portrayal of this event, giving rise to an argument known as the Swoon Theory. This theory suggests that Jesus did not die on the cross but instead survived the crucifixion, prompting various interpretations and implications. This thesis aims to explore the depiction of the crucifixion and death of Jesus in the Qur'an, focusing specifically on the swoon theory and its relationship with the medical perspective. By examining relevant Qur'anic verses …

The Impact Of Online Orientation Activities In A Blended New-Student Orientation Modality On Social Connectedness, Pamela Potoma Smalley
Theses and Dissertations
Transitioning from high school to college has been a challenge for most students. The inability to make successful transitions has affected students' ability to integrate and graduate from college. Higher educational institutions look to programs such as new-student orientations to support students as they learn to navigate their new academic (and for many, new living) environments. The COVID-19 pandemic changed how new-student orientation worked as all traditional institutions switched completely to online orientation activities from completely in-person activities. As institutions emerged from the aftermath of the pandemic, they implemented blended new-student orientation modalities consisting of both online and in-person activities. …

Exploring The Use Of Enhanced Swad Towards Building Learned Models That Generalize Better To Unseen Sources, Brandon M. Weinhofer
Exploring The Use Of Enhanced Swad Towards Building Learned Models That Generalize Better To Unseen Sources, Brandon M. Weinhofer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Deep learning models, typically, take significant time to train. Classifier ensembles are areliable way to increase classifier accuracy and perhaps generalizability to unseen sources of data. These classifiers can be combined with a simple voting scheme. The problem is that having multiple models can very heavily increase training time. Snapshot ensembles have been shown to provide a boost in performance by creating an ensemble of classifiers with different weights during the training of a single deep learned model. This can somewhat solve the problem of the increased training time as you do not have to train separate models. As Machine …

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day
A quarter of college students report experiencing insomnia symptoms, and 70-90% report sleeping less than 8 hours on weeknights. Sleep problems are linked to higher alcohol use, which also peaks during early adulthood. In a study of 2000 students, those who reported sleep issues also reported struggling with negative emotions and self-control, additional factors that have been related to problematic alcohol use. Exploring these relationships can aid in improved interventions to alcohol-related problems among students.

Rational number learning can cause frustration and negative emotions for elementary school students. Fraction Ball, a play-based math intervention, allows students to actively learn rational numbers through engaging and interactive activities. Based on a cluster-randomized trial with 16 teachers and 360 students, our pre-registered analyses showed moderate positive impacts of Fraction Ball on overall students' self-reported math-related emotions. Exploratory analyses indicated that students with higher negative emotions at pretest showed larger experimental impacts on decreasing negative emotions at posttest. Finally, we found that Fraction Ball evidenced no trade-off between rational number learning and emotional outcomes at the classroom block level, …

Adult Age Differences In Response To Sociomoral Violations, Alyssa R. Minton
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Moral judgments and emotional reactions to sociomoral violations are heavily impacted by a perpetrator’s intentions, as malicious intent poses a threat to social harmony. Given that older adults are more motivated to maintain interpersonal harmony relative to younger adults, older adults may be more reactive to malicious intentions. In five studies, I investigated adult age differences in moral judgments and emotional reactions to sociomoral violations. In Studies 1-3, participants read scenarios in which a perpetrator either (a) desired to harm another but nothing happened, or (b) harmed another accidentally without malicious intent. Study 2 incorporated additional scenarios designed to evoke …

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers
OBJECTIVE: Focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (FBTCS) represent a challenging subtype of focal temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) in terms of both severity and treatment response. Most studies have focused on regional brain analysis that is agnostic to the distribution of white matter (WM) pathways associated with a node. We implemented a more selective, edge-wise approach that allowed for identification of the individual connections unique to FBTCS.
METHODS: T1-weighted and diffusion-weighted images were obtained from 22 patients with solely focal seizures (FS), 43 FBTCS patients, and 65 age/sex-matched healthy participants (HPs), yielding streamline (STR) connectome matrices. We used diffusion tensor-derived STRs …
