Demystifying The Link Between Social Media Addiction And Sharing Without Verification: The Role Of Absentmindedness And Wellbeing, Murad Moqbel, Khaled A. Alshare, Michael A. Erskine
Information Systems Faculty Publications
We use salience and dual-system theories as the lens to investigate how (via which intervening mechanism) and when (under what condition(s)) social media addiction impacts unverified information sharing. Based on results from analyzing data from 234 social media users, we found that social media addiction augments unverified information sharing, and that absentmindedness partially mediates this relationship. Furthermore, we establish that wellbeing status buffers the harmful impact of social media addiction on unverified information sharing and absentmindedness.

Conceptions Of Heroic Leadership In Civil Society, Theresa A. Thorkildsen
Conceptions Of Heroic Leadership In Civil Society, Theresa A. Thorkildsen
Heroism Science
While nations face multiple disruptions to civil society, individuals in late adolescence and early adulthood are overlooked for heroic leadership opportunities in some cultures. An underestimation of individuals’ abilities is sometimes fostered by biological definitions of human development that align competence with physical changes in the brain (Blakemore, 2012). Prolonged exposure to such disregard can encourage individuals to restrict the information they notice, fostering distortion in the intentions that support leadership readiness (Pratkanis, 2007). Studies of individuals’ conceptions of how the world operates can improve leadership readiness if such evidence is used to verify that individuals notice essential information. Using …

Addressing Subject Heterogeneity In Time-Dependent Discrimination For Biomarker Evaluation, Xinyang Jiang, Wen Li, Ruosha Li, Jing Ning
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Accurate discrimination has been the central goal in identifying biomarkers for monitoring disease progression and early detection. Acknowledging the fact that discrimination accuracy of biomarkers for a time-to-event outcome often changes over time, local measures such as the time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve and its area under the curve (AUC) are used to assess time-dependent predictive discrimination. However, such measures do not address subject heterogeneity, although the impact of covariates including demographics, disease-related characteristics, and other clinical information on the discriminatory performance of biomarkers needs to be investigated before their clinical use. We propose the covariate-specific time-dependent AUC, a measure …

High-energy piping systems of power plants, such as Main Steam (MS) pipes or Hot Reheat (HR) pipes, operate at high temperatures and high pressure at base and cyclic loads. In the event of transient conditions, a pipe can be deflected dramatically and cause high stress in the pipe, leading to the failure of the piping system. Pipe hangers/supports are vital in maintaining the forces and stresses of the piping system within the allowable limits by allowing sufficient pipe movement from cold to hot conditions and protecting the piping system from operation transient loads such as steam hammer and water hammer …
