Public Opinion And Its Potential Impact On The U.S. Supreme Court, Savannah Medlin
Public Opinion And Its Potential Impact On The U.S. Supreme Court, Savannah Medlin
Senior Honors Theses
The Supreme Court of the United States has a fundamental role in the interpretation of the Constitution and the configuration of the legal landscape of the country. But, while the Framers isolated the Court from political pressures, the Court is not removed from the impact of public opinion. This essay considers the effect of public opinion on Supreme Court rulings by reviewing studies and cases to discover the part public opinion plays in the courtroom. My findings imply that public opinion impacts the Court. There are limited ways by which the Court can prevent this impact. I emphasize that the …
The Fallacy Of Auditor Independence And A Possible Solution, Harrison Hall
The Fallacy Of Auditor Independence And A Possible Solution, Harrison Hall
Senior Honors Theses
The goal of this paper is to analyze present research for the importance of independence to the auditing profession, determine the greatest threats to auditor independence today, the problems these threats have caused and to explore a possible solution to these problems. For many years, audit professionals have been considered the gatekeepers of the public market. Since the passing of the Securities Acts in the 1930’s, the structure of the privatized audit industry has made it incredibly difficult for auditors to remain independent from their clients. Client fees, the rise of non-audit services and the complexity of audit-client relationships pose …

The Complicit Canon Of Criminal Law: A Critical Survey Of Syllabi, Casebooks, And Supplemental Materials, Robin Peterson
The Complicit Canon Of Criminal Law: A Critical Survey Of Syllabi, Casebooks, And Supplemental Materials, Robin Peterson
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This Note analyzes the learning objectives, casebook readings, and supplemental sources that thirteen criminal law professors assigned over fifteen years and argues that the current approach to teaching criminal law is complicit in perpetuating the injustices of the American criminal legal system because it fails to adequately interrogate the carceral state and does not prepare students to become ethical practitioners or policymakers of criminal law. This paper calls for a fundamental rethinking of the purpose of teaching criminal law and recommends a reform orientation, which could be implemented through a variety of course structures.

Crystalizing Community: “Communities Of Interest” And The 2020 Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission, Edward Webre Plaut, Elizabeth Powers
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC) met for the first time in 2020 after it was created via ballot initiative in 2018. The MICRC included thirteen Michiganders tasked with drawing state house, senate, and congressional districts. The newly amended Michigan Constitution charged the MICRC with incorporating a new criterion previously unknown to Michigan redistricting: communities of interest. Communities of interest (COIs) have played a role in redistricting law across several states, gaining prominence after the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Shaw v. Reno as an ostensibly race-neutral “traditional districting principle.” However, the concept is difficult to define. This Note …

The Challenges Of The Increasing Institutionalization Of Climate Security, Judith N. Hardt, Dhanasree Jayaram, Cameron Harrington, Duncan Mclaren
Open Access archive
A rapid and widespread institutionalization of climate security is underway, led by powerful states and international organizations. Recognition of the climate crisis by security actors as a serious threat to humanity is long overdue, but it is imperative that this institutionalization is critically scrutinized. This commentary highlights specific dangers that accompany the institutional mainstreaming of climate security, including a non-reflexive integration into traditional security paradigms, a growing geopolitical separation between discourses emerging from the Global South and North, and policymaking that tends to draw from a narrow view of the science. Science-based and actionable research informed by pluralistic understandings of …

A Clinical Problem-Solving Model For Identifying And Addressing Barriers To Learning In Skill-Acquisition Programs, Landon Scott Cowan
A Clinical Problem-Solving Model For Identifying And Addressing Barriers To Learning In Skill-Acquisition Programs, Landon Scott Cowan
Dissertations (1934 -)
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services for learners with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other intellectual and developmental disabilities frequently involve teaching a variety of skills, such as those related to communication, daily-living, and safety. There is an extensive literature available demonstrating effective instructional procedures (e.g., discrete-trial teaching, prompt-fading strategies) as well as procedural or environmental modifications that clinicians can apply when teaching these skills; however, minimal literature exists to guide clinicians in applying these procedures when learners encounter a barrier to learning. Thus, it is unclear what systematic methods, if any, clinicians are using to determine efficacious and efficient instructional …

Exploring N-H Bond Activation And C-H Bond Activation By Tripodal Tris(Nitroxide) Aluminum And Gallium Complexes, Vivian W. Guo , '24
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
The activation of H–X (X = O, N, C) bonds is a common primary step in introducing alcohols, amines, and hydrocarbons into catalytic processes used in various industries. Precious metal complexes are commonly used as catalysts to activate H–X bonds through formal metal-based oxidative addition. However, since precious metals are scarce, expensive, toxic, and environmentally harmful, developing non-precious metal coordination complexes for H–X bond activation is essential. As a result, we investigate the activation of O–H, N–H, and C–H bonds through tripodal tris(nitroxide) aluminum and gallium complexes to develop a green strategy for broad-based H–X bond activation. Past members of …

Thinking Outside The Membrane: Investigating The Structure Of The Influenza A M2 Ectodomain, Kyra Roepke , '24
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
Influenza A leads to annual epidemics that result in three-to-five million cases of severe illness each year and occasional devastating pandemics. Some current prevention and treatment methods target the M2 membrane protein on the surface of the virus. However, viral mutability and drug resistance require the targeting of more conserved parts of the protein.
The goal of this thesis was to investigate the secondary structure and dynamics of the M2 ectodomain (M2e), which is highly conserved across influenza viruses and across evolutionary time. The structure of M2e has previously been challenging to study because of its flexibility. In this study, …
