Sun, Thunder, Daugava: Accessible Choral Music From The Latvian Choral Tradition, Paul M. Von Kampen

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

I have been fortunate enough to visit Latvia twice, once in 2009 and again in 2023. With connections made through the global outreach arm of the Lutheran Church Missouri–Synod, I was able to incorporate myself into Latvian culture in ways that may not have been possible had I been a standard tourist. I am grateful to have been invited into the homes of Latvian friends, to have studied in the Jāzeps Vītols Music Academy Library, and to have celebrated both the Jāņi midsummer festival in the Latvian countryside and my twenty-second birthday on the shores of the mighty Daugava River. …

Singing While Acting: A Mixed Methods Study Of Classical Singers’ Application Of The Chekhov And Meisner Acting Methods, Amy C. Johnson May 2024

Singing While Acting: A Mixed Methods Study Of Classical Singers’ Application Of The Chekhov And Meisner Acting Methods, Amy C. Johnson

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

When considering the minimal acting training incorporated into most voice performance programs, it is understandable why many singers struggle to balance vocal demands with acting demands. Furthermore, the expectations on singers to deliver authentic and nuanced performances are increasing as opera evolves. There is little in-depth understanding of classical singers’ experiences with applying specific acting techniques to their singing. There is also little information about how different acting methods may affect classical singing. This mixed methods collective case study aims to identify the impact of training in a specific acting method on classical singing. The qualitative strand focuses on the …

Exploring Affective Experiences Of Queer Individuals Navigating Relationships With Evangelical Parents, Grace Pappas May 2024

Exploring Affective Experiences Of Queer Individuals Navigating Relationships With Evangelical Parents, Grace Pappas

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

An abundance of scholarship explores and discusses the process of queer identity development, including the experience of disclosing one’s queer identity, often referred to as coming out. Coming out to one’s parent(s) can be a challenging and complex experience for queer individuals, particularly for children from religious families. In this study, I explored the nuanced relationships between queer individuals and their Evangelical parents. I conducted qualitative interviews with nine participants. Using thematic analysis and Ahmed’s theory of affect and happy objects, I constructed four themes: (a) learning the affect queer carries, (b) feeling the affects of being queer, (c) how …

Educational Influences On Environmental Perception: A Semester Analysis Of The New Ecological Paradigm Scale In Undergraduates, Zoe Zingler May 2024

Educational Influences On Environmental Perception: A Semester Analysis Of The New Ecological Paradigm Scale In Undergraduates, Zoe Zingler

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

This study evaluated the impact of a geography course, GEOG 181: Global Environmental Issues, at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on students’ endorsement of the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) using a pre-course and post-course NEP scale survey. Analyzing paired responses (n = 40) through t-tests and z-scores, only four of 15 statements had statistically significant shifts observed for the entire sample. However, a targeted analysis of students initially possessing lower endorsement of the NEP—early deniers—revealed significant paradigm shifts post-course. While women initially showed stronger NEP endorsement, men demonstrated notable changes following the course towards endorsement of the NEP. Academic majors, whether …

Development Of A Multi-Use Modular Microfluidic Platform Using 3d Printing, Carson Emeigh May 2024

Development Of A Multi-Use Modular Microfluidic Platform Using 3d Printing, Carson Emeigh

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Microfluidic lab-on-a-chip (LoC) technology has driven numerous innovations due to their ability to perform laboratory-scale experiments on a single chip using microchannels. Although LoC technology has been innovative, it still suffers from limitations related to its fabrication and design flexibility. Typical LoC fabrication, with photolithography, is time consuming, expensive, and inflexible. To overcome the limitations of LoC devices, modular microfluidic platforms have been developed where multiple microfluidic modules, each with a specific function or group of functions, can be combined on a single platform. Modular microfluidics have overcome some of the limitations of LoC devices, but currently, their fabrication is …

Faculty Publications

The present work is a comparison of the peritext typology found across various nonfiction picturebooks focusing on Chinese people, including Chinese Americans. Nineteen nonfiction books were chosen following selection methods described in previous literature. Books were individually analysed to see which of five categories they fit under, and insider/outsider status for each author and illustrator was recorded as well. All five types were found in the surveyed Chinese nonfiction picturebooks; however, none of the books encouraged readers to take action for social change. We also found slight variation in peritext usage between the insiders and outsiders for authors and illustrators. …

Investigative Research On Design Parameters And Criticality Models For Microreactors, Cameron Jensen May 2024

Investigative Research On Design Parameters And Criticality Models For Microreactors, Cameron Jensen

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

With increased energy demand and the desire to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, nuclear power will need to play a prominent role in achieving carbon-free energy independence. Large nuclear reactors are necessary to meet this objective. However, they are expensive and take a long time to build. For remote locations (e.g., military bases) and smaller communities, large nuclear reactors would not be feasible or cost effective. Small reactors (microreactors) can fill this necessary gap. These reactors would be factory-built, delivered quickly, and operated with high intrinsic levels of safety. With microreactors still in conceptual and testing states, there is a …

Statistical Classification Using Selection And Ranking Methodologies With Statistical Learning, Jeong Jun Lee

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The subject of Statistical Classification is concerned with identifying and allocating future observations into one of the pre-categorized classes based on the characteristics of the objects. Typically, these decisions to classify and categorize the objects have been dependent on identifying a system of classification, and from there, determining attributes for sorting.

In past decades, from discriminant analysis, various methods have been developed for classification. In particular, the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and statistical learning theory has made it possible to consider improving the existing methods along with new developments and more comprehensive schemes in conjunction with data-driven …

Self-Perception And Positive Stereotype Endorsement, Aileen Lovitt May 2024

Self-Perception And Positive Stereotype Endorsement, Aileen Lovitt

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The origin and reasoning behind the use of racial stereotypes has been a point of interest for researchers over the years. Many different theories have been proposed including those related to cognitive, evolutionary, and motivational explanations. However, most of these theories and the research backing them primarily focus on negative stereotyping. The origin of positive stereotyping, which also has negative implications associated with their use, has not been evaluated fully. Previous research has suggested that the motive to preserve self-worth and positive self-concept may play a role in stereotype endorsement. Two studies were conducted with the purpose of investigating whether …

A Low Dose Of Electro-Psychedelic Treatment Increases Neuronal Dendritic Arborization And Filopodic Spine Density, Elaine Aquino Vasquez

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Neuropsychiatric disorders remain a formidable challenge to the global healthcare system, necessitating innovative treatments to address their complex pathophysiology. Alternative therapeutic approaches, including electroconvulsive treatment (ECT) and psychedelics, have gained attention for their capacity to relieve a broad range of symptoms. ECT is a long-standing effective therapy for patients, especially treatment-resistant ones. Psychedelics, like psilocybin, can induce profound and sustained therapeutic effects. The limited understanding of their mechanisms of action, compounded by the negative stigma surrounding ECT and psilocybin, prevents them from being used as adjunct agents. ECT and psilocybin promote synaptic plasticity and modulate neural remodeling, yet their comparative …

An Examination Of The Teaching And Learning Of Resonance In General Chemistry I And Organic Chemistry I Using Variation Theory, Sabrina Barakat May 2024

An Examination Of The Teaching And Learning Of Resonance In General Chemistry I And Organic Chemistry I Using Variation Theory, Sabrina Barakat

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Resonance is a fundamental chemistry concept first introduced to students in General Chemistry I, reintroduced in Organic Chemistry I, and then utilized throughout other higher-level chemistry courses. A molecule or ion can be said to exhibit resonance when it can be represented by two or more chemical structures (i.e., Lewis structures) that differ only in their arrangement of electrons. In other words, resonance represents the electronic structure of a molecule or ion when a single Lewis structure does not adequately depict the true distribution of electrons. The molecule or ion is best represented as a combination of all of the …

Heat Transfer Enhancement In Heat Exchangers Using Compound Enhancement, Mouhsine Benmbarek May 2024

Heat Transfer Enhancement In Heat Exchangers Using Compound Enhancement, Mouhsine Benmbarek

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This research will try to investigate the enhancement of heat transfer in a heat exchanger that is made of a corrugated tube that has a twisted plate inserted in it, the corrugation, and twisted plate are expected to increase the amount of heat transfer since the plate is acting as a connection between the center of the flow and the edges of the tube. The turbulence will cause an increase in pressure drop along the channel length, so the investigation will try to find the best compromise between the gain in heat transfer and loss of hydraulic energy by using …

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied unilaterally to the primary motor cortex (M1) can significantly prolong the time to task failure (TTF) of a fatiguing contraction. The primary purpose of the study was to examine the influence of bilateral dual source tDCS (dstDCS) applied over the left and right M1s (ds-tDCS) on the TTF of a precision grip task. This was accomplished through the utilization of a double-blind, randomized, SHAM-controlled, within-subjects design. Fourteen participants completed two experiments (ds-tDCS and SHAM stimulation conditions) with a seven-day washout period between sessions. Each experiment involved the performance of a sustained isometric fatiguing contraction …

Causal Attribution Tendencies Of Early Childhood Practitioners And The Efficacy Of Attribution Retraining, Alex J. Faucheux May 2024

Causal Attribution Tendencies Of Early Childhood Practitioners And The Efficacy Of Attribution Retraining, Alex J. Faucheux

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Early childhood practitioners frequently attempt to identify the cause of outcomes experienced by their learners. This is sometimes referred to as causal attribution. Causal attribution may be affected by prior success and failure of a learner, the amount of effort exerted by the learner, the ability level of the learner, and knowledge of any disability associated with the learner, all of which can be considered controllable or uncontrollable, stable or unstable, and internal or external (Weiner, 1986; Woodcock & Vialle, 2011). As practitioners attribute cause to outcomes, they start to develop attributional tendencies; these tendencies, along with the cues and …

Additionally, pinpointing the location of a leak is a task that could lead to the mitigation of excess waste leaking from …

Predicting The Response Of An Underactuated, 3d Printed Prosthetic Hand, Lucas Gallup May 2024

Predicting The Response Of An Underactuated, 3d Printed Prosthetic Hand, Lucas Gallup

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The continuing need for hand prostheses has led to incredible developments in this area. However, due to the cost of the most sophisticated models, it is vital to develop simpler, low-cost, underactuated prostheses that can be produced rapidly. 3D printing is an important tool to achieve this goal. In particular, the 3D printed Flexy-Hand 2 has been one of the most common low-cost designs. A key feature of the Flexy-Hand 2 is its use of tendons and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) for joints that are strong and flexible. TPUs, however, lack a thorough understanding of their mechanical behavior, which makes it …

Performance Effects Of Dissociated Hydrogen In Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Engines, Richard Adam Gorrell

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) research considers hydrogen dissociation as negligible to design and analysis of propulsion engines. This study reintroduces chemically reacting flow to NTP engine analysis for investigation of the dissociation effect on engine performance. A first-principles approach observes the basic chemical mechanism and reaction within the high-speed, high-temperature NTP flow to baseline expected atomic hydrogen levels and validate equilibrium. A surface reaction study looks into hydrogen absorption through dissociation and its effect on the boundary layer, and bulk flow. For total performance, the resulting dissociated flow is analyzed through nozzle expansion and performance metrics calculated.

All historic reactor …

Regulation Of Embryonic Eye Regrowth In Xenopus Laevis, Dylan Guerin May 2024

Regulation Of Embryonic Eye Regrowth In Xenopus Laevis, Dylan Guerin

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Regrowth of lost organs and tissues is an amazing ability that some animals possess. For regrowth to be considered full, the organism must regrow the organ or tissue to a state that is structurally and functionally similar to that which was lost. The ability of an organism to regrow lost or damaged tissue varies among animals, both in the mechanisms utilized to achieve regrowth, and in what body parts can be regrown. Potentially even closely related species can vary wildly in regenerative ability. Therefore, regenerative research can look to other tissues and organisms for direction in elucidating the mechanisms through …

Removal Of Permethrin And Bifenthrin Insecticides From Runoff Water By Activated Carbon Adsorption, Ernesto Hernandez

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Among the hundreds of pesticides and insecticides, pyrethroids-particularly permethrin and bifenthrin, have become very popular due to their high toxicity to insects and low toxicity to humans, leading to extensive use in both agriculture and urban areas. Pyrethroids have no discharge limits because of this, leading to a negative impact on surrounding ecosystems due to their high toxicity to fish and aquatic life. Due to their low solubility and long half-lives, they are prominent in the environment long after application with a high potential for getting transported in runoff water to nearby water bodies. In this study, DSR-C reactivated carbon …

Modeling Inflation Transmission Among Different Construction Materials, Mohamad Abdul Nabi, Islam H. El-Adaway, Rayan H. Assaad May 2024

Modeling Inflation Transmission Among Different Construction Materials, Mohamad Abdul Nabi, Islam H. El-Adaway, Rayan H. Assaad

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cost estimating in the construction industry is challenging due to the high uncertainty associated with the supply chain, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Some research studies have addressed such problems by developing models that predict material cost. In fact, all material can be interconnected and interrelated with lead-lag relationships such that any inflation in one material's price can be associated with inflation in other materials' prices, referred to as transmission of inflation. Despite the latter, none of the existing studies have investigated inflation transmission among all construction materials. This paper fills this knowledge gap. The authors used a multistep research …

Analysis Of Single Event Transients In Arbitrary Waveforms Using Statistical Window Analysis, James Carpenter May 2024

Analysis Of Single Event Transients In Arbitrary Waveforms Using Statistical Window Analysis, James Carpenter

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Window functions are commonly used in data processing to detect transient events or for time-averaging of frequency spectra. A generalized window function is demonstrated using the Ionizing Radiation Effects Spectroscopy (IRES) technique to enhance the measurement of transient anomalies within arbitrary waveforms. The IRES filter convolves time data with a sliding window consisting of a moment-generating function. The resulting time-dependent statistical moments are used to eliminate any steady-state signatures, including noise, and extract transient behaviors. The IRES filter analyzes data from heavy-ion exposures of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) operational amplifiers, laser-induced transients in Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) phase-locked loops, and simulated transients …

Investigations Into The Role Of Entropy-Selected Rf-Dna Fingerprint Features On Id-Verification Performance In The Presence Of Rogue Emitters, Awab Mohammed May 2024

Investigations Into The Role Of Entropy-Selected Rf-Dna Fingerprint Features On Id-Verification Performance In The Presence Of Rogue Emitters, Awab Mohammed

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The Internet of Things (IoT) is projected to reach 30.9 billion devices by 2025. However, most lack adequate security measures against sophisticated threats. Specific Emitter Identification (SEI) is a crucial security approach for authenticating wireless emitters. This work integrates RF-DNA fingerprinting, a specialized form of SEI, with Deep Learning (DL) techniques to authenticate the identity of authorized emitters. This authentication becomes crucial in the presence of “rogue” emitters who deliberately impersonate authorized emitters using falsified digital credentials. The RF-DNA fingerprints are extracted from the entropy-selected regions within the TF representations of an emitter’s signals. The obtained results demonstrate the success …

The Influence Of Personal Factors On Wrongful Convictions, Ellee Jackson May 2024

The Influence Of Personal Factors On Wrongful Convictions, Ellee Jackson

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Previous work has identified factors that influence the likelihood of wrongful conviction. However, fewer efforts have been made to examine how these factors influence the amount of time between wrongful conviction and exoneration. This is crucial to the expansion of innocence research and the contextualization of wrongful convictions within the criminal justice system. This study employs negative binomial regression to analyze data collected by the National Registry of Exonerations (NRE). Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) genetics are characterized by lower discoverability than most other psychiatric disorders. The contribution to biological understanding from previous genetic studies has thus been limited. We performed a multi-ancestry meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies across 1,222,882 individuals of European ancestry (137,136 cases) and 58,051 admixed individuals with African and Native American ancestry (13,624 cases). We identified 95 genome-wide significant loci (80 new). Convergent multi-omic approaches identified 43 potential causal genes, broadly classified as neurotransmitter and ion channel synaptic modulators (for example, GRIA1, GRM8 and CACNA1E), developmental, axon guidance and transcription factors (for example, FOXP2, EFNA5 and DCC), …

A generalized Lehmer conjecture predicts that, for every positive integer n, the trace of the Hecke operator Tn in level one does not vanish, unless the space of cusp forms acted upon is trivial. So far, this has only been established for n = 2. In this paper, we use p-adic methods to prove the statement for n = 3.
