Ramanujan Type Congruences For Quotients Of Klein Forms, Timothy Huber, Nathaniel Mayes, Jeffery Opoku, Dongxi Ye May 2024

Ramanujan Type Congruences For Quotients Of Klein Forms, Timothy Huber, Nathaniel Mayes, Jeffery Opoku, Dongxi Ye

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this work, Ramanujan type congruences modulo powers of primes p≥5 are derived for a general class of products that are modular forms of level p. These products are constructed in terms of Klein forms and subsume generating functions for t-core partitions known to satisfy Ramanujan type congruences for p=5,7,11. The vectors of exponents corresponding to products that are modular forms for Γ1(p) are subsets of bounded polytopes with explicit parameterizations. This allows for the derivation of a complete list of products that are modular forms for Γ1(p) of weights 1≤k≤5 for primes 5≤p≤19 and whose Fourier coefficients …

Effect Of The Age Of Garments Used Under Real-Life Conditions On Microfibre Release From Polyester And Cotton Clothing, Andreia N. Fernandes, Larissa Z. Lara, Francesca De Falco, Andrew Turner, Richard C. Thompson May 2024

Effect Of The Age Of Garments Used Under Real-Life Conditions On Microfibre Release From Polyester And Cotton Clothing, Andreia N. Fernandes, Larissa Z. Lara, Francesca De Falco, Andrew Turner, Richard C. Thompson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The release of microfibres from fabrics during laundering represents an important source of plastic and natural microfibres to aquatic environments. Garment age - how long the garment has been used - could be a key factor influencing the rate of release, yet most studies of microfibre shedding have only assessed newly manufactured products. To this end, we quantified microfibre release during laundering in domestic washing machines from polyester (PES) and cotton garments (n = 38) used in real-life conditions for periods between 1 and 31 years with different use intensities. In addition, to better understand the factors involved in microfibre …

The Adultification Of African American Girls: Perceptions, Experiences, And Impact On Behavior, Sherie Sara Sam May 2024

The Adultification Of African American Girls: Perceptions, Experiences, And Impact On Behavior, Sherie Sara Sam

All Dissertations

Adultification occurs when adults treat children like they are more mature than they are. This is particularly likely to happen to African American children (Pope, 2022). Adultification in homes is the result of deficits in the adult figures; however, adultification outside of the family, cemented with implicit biases, has negative consequences for young African American children (Cooke & Halberstadt, 2021). These biases can negatively impact their self-concept. Furthermore, it may jeopardize their health, education, experiences with discipline, and likelihood of contact with the justice system (Koch & Kozhumam, 2022).

This qualitative descriptive study utilized focus groups of primarily young adults …

“Lifting The Private-Law Veil”: Employer Authority And The “Contractual-Coating” Of Worker Subordination, Valerio De Stefano, Nicola Countouris

All Papers

Despite the notion of subordination in work relations and the subjection of workers to the managerial prerogatives of employers have received significant consideration and discourse since the outset of labour law, critical examinations of the underlying foundations of such subordination and subjection in contemporary democracies founded on the rule of law remain scarce. This article wants to prompt a novel reflection on these issues, starting with a historical analysis of their origins and a renewed understanding of their legal background. It opens by discussing some outstanding issues concerning work subordination that are not adequately captured by the classic theory of …

Impeaching With An Alleged Prior False Accusation, Erin Murphy May 2024

Impeaching With An Alleged Prior False Accusation, Erin Murphy

Fordham Law Review

The Court’s categorical recognition of bias as a constitutionally protected, and therefore rape-shield recognized, exception to the general bar on evidence of sexual history has led to questions about whether other forms of impeachment might also evade rape shield restrictions. In particular, courts have grappled with the admissibility of impeachment by evidence of a prior false accusation (PFA).

The current treatment of PFAs is inconsistent and controversial for several reasons. First, as explained further in Part I, there is a lack of clear guidance in the rules about how such evidence should be treated. Second, of course, there are the …

American Democracy And The State Constitutional Convention, Jonathan L. Marshfield May 2024

American Democracy And The State Constitutional Convention, Jonathan L. Marshfield

Fordham Law Review

Fears about the health of American democracy are high. And with the U.S. Supreme Court loosening federal constraints and returning critical substantive issues to the states, there is new and particular interest in the democratic quality of state institutions. Although some see opportunity in this decentralization, there is also good reason to believe that many states are failing to deliver on America’s democratic ideals. There are growing concerns, for example, that many state legislatures are enacting laws wildly misaligned with majority preferences on important issues like guns, abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, and healthcare. There are also deeper structural concerns regarding partisan …

From Poll Tests To The Purcell Doctrine: Merrill V. Milligan And The Precarious Preservation Of Voting Rights, Charis Franklin May 2024

From Poll Tests To The Purcell Doctrine: Merrill V. Milligan And The Precarious Preservation Of Voting Rights, Charis Franklin

Fordham Law Review

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 (“the Voting Rights Act”) is one of the primary vehicles by which plaintiffs receive injunctive relief ahead of elections. More specifically, § 2 of the Voting Rights Act allows plaintiffs to challenge gerrymandered maps before they are used in contentious elections. However, Justice Kavanaugh’s reframing of the Purcell doctrine in Merrill v. Milligan weakened § 2’s ability to interrupt the use of these maps. This Note discusses how Justice Kavanaugh’s interpretation of the Purcell doctrine recenters the doctrine on bureaucratic inconvenience rather than voter enfranchisement, restricting voters’ access to relief prior to elections. Furthermore, …

Gene Patents: Striking The Right Balance Between Incentive And Innovation, Josh Saul May 2024

Gene Patents: Striking The Right Balance Between Incentive And Innovation, Josh Saul

Fordham Law Review

The U.S. Supreme Court held human genes to be unpatentable subject matter in Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics, Inc. The implications from this decision were, and to a large extent still are, unclear. However, in the decade since this decision, a number of studies have begun to shed light on the fallout of Myriad. This Note examines such studies and finds that they suggest a decline in investment and innovation in the biotech industry. In order to promote research and innovation in the field of genetics, this Note then advocates for legislative action to reestablish the …

Branding Corporate Criminals, W. Robert Thomas, Milhailis E. Diamantis May 2024

Branding Corporate Criminals, W. Robert Thomas, Milhailis E. Diamantis

Fordham Law Review

Corporate punishment has a branding problem. Criminal sanctions should call out wrongdoing and condemn wrongdoers. In a world where generic corporate misconduct is a daily affair, conviction singles out truly contemptible practices from merely sharp, unproductive, or undesirable ones. In this way, criminal law gives victims the recognition they deserve, deters future wrongdoers who want to preserve their good name, and publicly reinforces society’s most treasured values.

Unfortunately, corporate punishment falls far short of all these communicative ambitions. For punishment to convey its intended message, society must be able to hear about it. When courts convict individuals, everyone understands that …

Lattice Investigations Of The Chimera Baryon Spectrum In The Sp (4) Gauge Theory, Ed Bennett, Deog Ki Hong, Ho Hsiao, Jong Wan Lee, C. J.David Lin, Biagio Lucini, Maurizio Piai, Davide Vadacchino

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We report the results of lattice numerical studies of the Sp(4) gauge theory coupled to fermions (hyperquarks) transforming in the fundamental and two-index antisymmetric representations of the gauge group. This strongly coupled theory is the minimal candidate for the ultraviolet completion of composite Higgs models that facilitate the mechanism of partial compositeness for generating the top-quark mass. We measure the spectrum of the low-lying, half-integer spin, bound states composed of two fundamental and one antisymmetric hyperquarks, dubbed chimera baryons, in the quenched approximation. In this first systematic, nonperturbative study, we focus on the three lightest parity-even chimera-baryon states, in analogy …

Do Firms With Technological Capabilities Rush In? Evidence From The Timing Of Licensing Of Stanford Inventions, Young-Choon Kim, Reddi Kotha, Mooweon Rhee May 2024

Do Firms With Technological Capabilities Rush In? Evidence From The Timing Of Licensing Of Stanford Inventions, Young-Choon Kim, Reddi Kotha, Mooweon Rhee

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study investigates the influence of licensees’ technological capabilities on the timing of technology licensing in university technology commercialization. Drawing on the appropriation-collaboration tension from the literature on university technology licensing and intellectual property management, we propose that while the licensee’s technological capabilities drive early licensing by averting technological obsolescence, this effect diminishes significantly with an overlap in the technological domain of the focal invention due to expropriation concerns. Cox regression analysis of Stanford University’s invention dataset confirmed our hypotheses. This research reveals that technology licensing experiences delays with the most suitable licensees, namely, those with strong technological capabilities in …

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Numerous genomic methods developed over the past two decades have enabled the discovery and extraction of orthologous loci to help resolve phylogenetic relationships across various taxa and scales. Genome skimming (or low-coverage genome sequencing) is a promising method to not only extract high-copy loci but also 100s to 1000s of phylogenetically informative nuclear loci (e.g., ultraconserved elements [UCEs] and exons) from contemporary and museum samples. The subphylum Anthozoa, including important ecosystem engineers (e.g., stony corals, black corals, anemones, and octocorals) in the marine environment, is in critical need of phylogenetic resolution and thus might benefit from a genome-skimming approach. We …

An Attentionless Account Of The Attentional Blink, Matthew Stephen Junker May 2024

An Attentionless Account Of The Attentional Blink, Matthew Stephen Junker

Dissertations

Theories of the attentional blink (AB) – a deficit in responding to the second of two temporally proximal stimuli (within 500 ms; Raymond et al., 1992) – generally explain the deficit as resulting from either the dynamics in top-down and bottom-up attentional process, or limitations in the capacity of the hypothesized attentional process. Extensive basic research has been conducted on the neural correlates of top-down and bottom-up attention as well as on the capacity limitations of attention; however, rather than leading to a single definition, the variety and complexity of results has led several taxonomies which differ systematically with the …

Germanium-Tin On Silicon For Integrated Photonics And Integrated Quantum Materials, Shang Liu May 2024

Germanium-Tin On Silicon For Integrated Photonics And Integrated Quantum Materials, Shang Liu

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Group IV GeSn alloys are attracting attention due to their compatibility with the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process. On one hand, Ge-rich GeSn alloys with a tunable direct bandgap are well-suited to infrared (IR) photonic applications such as image sensors. On the other hand, Sn-rich GeSn alloys in diamond cubic α phase are topological quantum materials (TQM) holding potential for important quantum applications. However, directly growing GeSn on Si remains challenging due to the lattice mismatch. Regular epitaxial GeSn grown on a Ge buffer layer is not applicable to many photonic applications including CMOS image sensors (CIS) because the buffer layer …
