The Viking Warrior Woman? Birka Chamber Grave Bj 581, Emily A. Stolp

ATU Scholars Symposium

On a very small island called Björkö in the middle of Lake Mälaren, in southern Sweden, was a Viking settlement called Birka that was occupied for about 200 years. This town was the perfect trading area where merchants and tradesmen came with goods from all over Europe, and other parts of the world. Beginning in the late nineteenth century some 1,100 graves were excavated by Swedish antiquarian Hjalmar Stolpe. One of these graves in particular, labeled Bj 581, seen as remarkable at the time of excavation would later become a significantly controversial grave. The individual in grave Bj 581 was …

The Canticle Of Life: Reimagining The World War Ii Bombing Of Monte Cassino, Katherine Bechter Apr 2024

The Canticle Of Life: Reimagining The World War Ii Bombing Of Monte Cassino, Katherine Bechter

Liberty University Research Week

My creative narrative reveals an intricate connection between fiction and history by reimagining the historical bombing of the Monte Cassino Abbey during World War II. On February 15, 1944, the Allied troops justified the bombing on a suspicion that Nazi troops were hiding in the Monastery; instead, the Abbey only housed monks and refugees who were seeking shelter. The bombing resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians and fueled German propaganda that claimed the Allies had no respect for sacred religious sites. My novel balances the authenticity of this historical event with the creativity of the narrative, conveying the bombing …

Anomaly Detection With Spiking Neural Networks (Snn), Shruti Bhandari, Vyshnavi Gogineni Apr 2024

Anomaly Detection With Spiking Neural Networks (Snn), Shruti Bhandari, Vyshnavi Gogineni

ATU Scholars Symposium

Abstract:

Anomaly detection, the identification of rare or unusual patterns that deviate from normal behavior, is a fundamental task with wide-ranging applications across various domains. Traditional machine learning techniques often struggle to effectively capture the complex temporal dynamics present in real-world data streams. Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), inspired by the spiking nature of biological neurons, offer a promising approach by inherently modeling temporal information through precise spike timing. In this study, we investigate the use of Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) for detecting anomalies or unusual patterns in data. We propose an SNN model that can learn what constitutes normal …

The State Of The Art In Root System Architecture Image Analysis Using Artificial Intelligence: A Review, Brandon J. Weihs, Jo Heuschele, Zhou Tang, Larry M. York, Zhiwu Zhang, Zhanyou Xu

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Roots are essential for acquiring water and nutrients to sustain and support plant growth and anchorage. However, they have been studied less than the aboveground traits in phenotyping and plant breeding until recent decades. In modern times, root properties such as morphology and root system architecture (RSA) have been recognized as increasingly important traits for creating more and higher quality food in the “Second Green Revolution”. To address the paucity in RSA and other root research, new technologies are being investigated to fill the increasing demand to improve plants via root traits and overcome currently stagnated genetic progress in stable …

Five Themes Of U.S. Home Price Cycles: A Dynamic Modelling Approach, Ramaprasad Bhar, A. G. Malliaris, Mary Malliaris, Mark S. Rzepczynski

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

After the Global Financial Crisis, the U.S. housing market has been studied extensively from several dimensions to assess the causes for the price crash during 2007–2012. In this paper, we formulate five hypotheses about the behavior of housing prices and introduce two important innovations: first we extend the sample period, from January 1987 to August 2023, to assess whether the common determinants that drove housing prices during the GFC also moved housing dynamics during the essentially zero interest rate and pandemic periods. Second, we formulate five hypotheses and employ a dynamic econometric modelling approach to empirically investigate the drivers of …

Rebuilding Lives: Exploring The Advantages Of Occupational Therapy In A Community-Based Resource Center For Homeless Veterans, Melanie Clampitt

MOT Student Capstones

Current research demonstrates that homeless veterans continue to face unmet needs through ineffective government programs. Although community-based veterans resource centers have been established to address these gaps, they are often overwhelmed by the number of homeless veterans seeking assistance. The occupational therapy (OT) profession is uniquely positioned to address these challenges by utilizing interventions that enhance occupational performance and participation, 3 improving homeless veterans' overall quality of life. However, these programs are frequently overlooked due to a need for more awareness among resource center staff and community stakeholders regarding the benefits of OT. An extensive review of scholarly articles was …

Exact Treatment Of Weak Dark Matter-Baryon Scattering For Linear-Cosmology Observables, Y. Ali-Haïmoud, S. S. Gandhi, Tristan L. Smith Apr 2024

Exact Treatment Of Weak Dark Matter-Baryon Scattering For Linear-Cosmology Observables, Y. Ali-Haïmoud, S. S. Gandhi, Tristan L. Smith

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Elastic scattering of dark matter (DM) particles with baryons induce cosmological signals that may be detectable with modern or future telescopes. For DM-baryon scattering cross sections scaling with negative powers of relative velocity, 𝜎𝜒⁢𝑏⁡(𝑣) ∝𝑣⁻²,𝑣⁻⁴, such interactions introduce a momentum-exchange rate that is nonlinear in DM-baryon bulk relative velocities, thus not amenable for inclusion as-is into standard linear cosmological Boltzmann codes. Linear Ansätze have been adopted in past works, but their accuracy is unknown as they do not arise from first-principles derivations. In this work, for the first time, we construct a rigorous framework for computing linear-cosmology observables …
