Buprenorphine Use For Analgesia In Palliative Care, Leanne K Jackson, Ivy O Poon, Mary A Garcia, Syed Imam, Ursula K Braun

Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications

Buprenorphine is a semi-synthetic long-acting partial µ-opioid receptor (MOR) agonist that can be used for chronic pain as a sublingual tablet, transdermal patch (Butrans®), or a buccal film (Belbuca®). Buprenorphine’s unique high receptor binding affinity and slow dissociation at the MOR allow for effective analgesia while offering less adverse effects compared to a full agonist opioid, in particular, less concern for respiratory depression and constipation. It is underused in chronic pain and palliative care due to misconceptions and stigma from its use in opioid use disorder (OUD). This case report discusses the unique pharmacology of buprenorphine, including its advantages, disadvantages, …

This research study investigates the linguistic characteristics of discourse related to depression and suicidal ideation among autistic women, with the aim of identifying potential biases in digital surveillance models. The inclusion of neurodivergent populations in such models is crucial for ensuring equitable representation and accurate understanding of mental health issues. Data was collected from Reddit, a popular online platform known for its diverse user-generated content. Specifically, two subreddits—r/AutismInWomen and r/aspergirls—dedicated to discussions regarding autism in women were utilized, alongside a general subreddit focused on depression (r/depression). The study employed qualitative methods such as human annotation and topic analysis using BERTopic …

Self-Care Practices, Perceived Wellness, And Professional Identity Among Counseling Graduate Students, Seydem Yesilada May 2024

Self-Care Practices, Perceived Wellness, And Professional Identity Among Counseling Graduate Students, Seydem Yesilada

Dissertations - ALL

Counseling students tend to experience high levels of stress during their training (Coaston & Lawrence, 2019). It is known that they can be at high risk of burnout, incompetence, or impairment if they neglect to engage in self-care and wellness practices (Dye et al., 2020; Prikhidko et al., 2020). While these findings have been validated for professional counselors (Rummell, 2015), as well as studied separately in counseling students (Prikhidko et al., 2020), there have not been any studies on how counseling students’ self-care practices and perceived wellness impacts their professional identity. This research study helped to fill the gap in …

Evil We Desire: Akrasia And The Ethics Of Conspiracy Rhetoric, Andrew Ridgeway May 2024

Evil We Desire: Akrasia And The Ethics Of Conspiracy Rhetoric, Andrew Ridgeway

Dissertations - ALL

My dissertation reimagines the work of four prominent rhetorical theorists—Aristotle, Plato, Augustine of Hippo, and Kenneth Burke—through the lens of psychoanalysis to develop a theory of rhetorical ethics that accounts for the subject’s relationship to libidinal satisfaction, or jouissance. In each chapter, I will examine a useful example of conspiracist rhetoric, which will double as both a case study and a point of departure for a Lacanian reimaging of a prominent rhetorical theory or concept. In the first chapter, I examine the “Stop the Steal” conspiracy and the January 6th insurrection to argue that Aristotle’s description of akrasia, or moral …

Three Essays On The Policy Process Of Subnational Industrial Policymaking In China, Shiyang Xiao May 2024

Three Essays On The Policy Process Of Subnational Industrial Policymaking In China, Shiyang Xiao

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation consists of four chapters that focus on the policy process of provincial industrial policymaking targeting the manufacturing sector in China. In the first chapter, I introduce an original dataset called the "Chinese Industrial Policy Attention Dataset" (CIPAD). CIPAD contains 612 central-level and 1907 provincial-level Chinese industrial policies issued between 2001 and 2019. A novel design of CIPAD is that the full text of each industrial policy is transformed into a distribution-of-attention vector which records the attention allocation of each policy among 155 finely segmented industrial categories in the manufacturing sector. By transforming industrial policies into distribution-of-attention vectors, CIPAD …

How Disruptions In Indirect Procurement Impact An Organization’S Adoption Of Technology, Rachel Rutkoski May 2024

Since purchasing products at the right price is a critical part of the profitability of an organization, procurement has a direct impact on an organization’s bottom line. Mature, forward-thinking organizations consider eProcurement technology to be a competitive advantage to have an eProcurement technology that generates cost savings and increases productivity and the efficient use of resources. …

The Effects Of Classification Versus Observation During Category Learning, Enoch Sarakpo May 2024

The Effects Of Classification Versus Observation During Category Learning, Enoch Sarakpo

Theses - ALL

We report a category-learning experiment that examines the learning outcomes of classification and observational training methods across three category structures. Thus, we crossed training (classification vs. observation) and category type (natural vs. featural vs. relational). Some subjects classified the stimuli (side-by-side bird pairs) and received corrective feedback after each response, whereas others studied these stimuli, wherein they were presented with the corresponding category label. The posttest was an endorsement task made up of repeated and novel items. We did find an observation training advantage, as subjects in the observation training were better in the natural and relational categories for the …

Indigenous Artistic Activism And The (Re)Envisioned Landscape: Decolonizing Settler Land Knowledge, Hannah Lorell Sparks May 2024

Indigenous Artistic Activism And The (Re)Envisioned Landscape: Decolonizing Settler Land Knowledge, Hannah Lorell Sparks

Theses - ALL

In this thesis I investigate mimetic Indigenous artwork as a productive site of settler colonial disruption. More specifically, I attend to the potential of these artworks to disorient romantic habits of viewing landscapes. Framed as a critique of settler logics, I argue that the underlying ideologies of Euro-American romantic landscape art have tracked from the 19th-century to today to produce an illusory, aestheticized view of nature as grand and empty, distancing settlers from the material realities of land use and the violence of settler colonialism. In a contributory attempt to decolonize settler understandings of and relations to land, I look …

Social Closeness And Body Mass Index: Implications For Adolescent Suicide, Megan Milligan May 2024

Social Closeness And Body Mass Index: Implications For Adolescent Suicide, Megan Milligan

Theses - ALL

Research on Body Mass Index (BMI) as a predictor of adolescent suicidality has been mixed, and though some extant findings point to an association between elevated BMI and suicide, it remains unclear how suicidality differs between categorical weight groups (i.e., healthy weight, overweight, obese weight determined by BMI percentile). Adolescents with elevated BMI face disproportionate risk for social rejection and bullying, both of which predict suicidality. Thus, more information is needed regarding between-group differences in suicide-related outcomes by weight status and potential social factors that may be protective across weight groups. The present study leveraged a nationally-representative dataset to examine …

Frightened Birds: An Exploration Of Insecurity And Its Artistic Expression, Chenyu Wang May 2024

Frightened Birds: An Exploration Of Insecurity And Its Artistic Expression, Chenyu Wang

Theses - ALL

This thesis aims to examine the root causes of human insecurity and to explore how to live with insecurity, both theoretically and visually. The nature of insecurity is further explored by analyzing it in a philosophical sense and making an analogy with Albert Camus’ understanding of “absurdity.” As a universal feeling, insecurity has enormous potential to be explored as an artistic topic. Creating and thinking from this feeling can trigger the audience’s emotional resonance and inspire more thinking in response. Insecurity is about meaning, about human longing and expectation, about the absurdity that one cannot escape. By analyzing insecurity, one …

Contextual And Positional Associations In Free And Serial Recall, Nathan Burns May 2024

Contextual And Positional Associations In Free And Serial Recall, Nathan Burns

Theses - ALL

The research in this thesis presents a novel experiment and analyses to characterize effects in episodic memory which have classically been developed using different classes of theories. An encoding design was used which typically offers support for positional coding theory, phonological similarity among words in a studied list, with a recall paradigm which typically offers support for retrieved context theory, free recall. This experiment manipulated recall task, serial recall and free recall, as well as the presence and order of similar items across three possible list types. Analyses focused on differences in recall probability, recall errors, and recall transitions by …

“Don’T Rock The Boat:” The Social Reproduction Of Inequality In Medical Education, Hannah Connolly May 2024

“Don’T Rock The Boat:” The Social Reproduction Of Inequality In Medical Education, Hannah Connolly

Dissertations - ALL

Social factors are the primary drivers of health inequity in the United States, and medical education has agreed that trainees should develop the skills to acknowledge and address them. However, there is evidence that medical trainees remain underprepared to address the social drivers of health in practice, despite curricular innovations dedicated to this aim. This dissertation is comprised of three papers based on a year-long hybrid ethnography of third- year medical students in the United States. Utilizing participant observation, observant participation, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups, I explore how medical students come to understand their role in addressing the social …

Master Of None: Living, Thinking And Co-Creating With Unruly Frigid Bodies, Greeshma Chenni Veettil

Theses - ALL

This thesis explores the primary modes of my artistic practice, which involve paying attention to bodily sensations, posing questions about the ordinary, and engaging in purposeful drifts of inquiry. Through a loose assemblage of practices centered around ice, static photographs, and my own brown body, I delve into the vitality and transgressions inherent in these seemingly inert beings. My work draws upon feminist scholarship on embodiment and employs affective engagement as a methodology for unlearning. Disparate accounts are considered through a polyamorous engagement with diverse disciplines. In doing so, I underscore the importance of unbound curiosity over linearly connected deductions …

Electrospun Shape Memory Fibers For Chronic Wound Surveillance, Avery Gunderson May 2024

Electrospun Shape Memory Fibers For Chronic Wound Surveillance, Avery Gunderson

Theses - ALL

Approximately 6 million patients suffer from chronic wounds each year. These wounds are highly susceptible to infection and subsequent biofilm formation. Biofilms are difficult to dislodge due to their protective extracellular matrix. Antibiotics cannot penetrate the biofilm matrix, so wound healing is often compromised. Current surveillance and treatment options, such as swabbing or dressings, are ineffective and often painful to the patient. Our approach is to employ a bacterial protease-responsive shape memory polymer (SMP) that combats biofilm formation and helps the healing process proceed. To aid in protease penetration and enhance wound dressing comfort, electrospinning can be used to produce …

The Sea Of Sorrow Has No Shore: A Note On Grief And The Radical Practice Of Grief, Fatemeh Kazemi May 2024

Non-Compressible Grade 4 Hemorrhagic Liver Injury Model For Assessment Of Shape Memory Polymers As A Hemostatic Agent, Shi S. Dong May 2024

Non-Compressible Grade 4 Hemorrhagic Liver Injury Model For Assessment Of Shape Memory Polymers As A Hemostatic Agent, Shi S. Dong

Theses - ALL

Uncontrolled hemorrhage is a leading cause of trauma-related deaths, particularly in combat situations. The most administered treatment is gauze and tourniquets, which are shown to be ineffective for up to 80% of wounds, including non-compressible hemorrhage sites, such as those in the torso region. Shape memory polymer (SMP) foams have been shown to be an effective hemostatic dressing for traumatic wounds due to the tunability of their rapid clotting, mechanical properties, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and drug-loading abilities. The SMP foam design can be characterized with animal models, and a porcine liver injury is the current ‘gold standard’ animal model. To address …

“We Are Men”: Constituting The Prisoners’ Rights Movement Through Prison Writing, Emily Kathryn Iknayan May 2024

“We Are Men”: Constituting The Prisoners’ Rights Movement Through Prison Writing, Emily Kathryn Iknayan

Theses - ALL

In this thesis, I investigate how the discourse of incarcerated writers responds to the Attica Prison Uprising across time and geography in prison newspapers and poetry. I first argue that the rhetorical responses of incarcerated writers in the first six months after the uprising construct Attica as an Event, a moment characterized by intense difference where everything becomes possible. A scrutiny of the Event requires dwelling in the moment before clear meanings have been solidified, so conceptualizing Attica as an Event in the writings that are temporally and geographically close to Attica requires speculation. By the time the first-year anniversary …

Investigating Language Usage In The Language Classroom: A Comparative Analysis Of Operationalization Methods And Implications For Educational Research, Manal Bani Humayyim

Theses - ALL

Multilingual approaches in second language (SL) classrooms, where learners use first language (L1) or any other known language beside the target language (TL), is an issue of ongoing research. While various research methods like word analysis, time analysis, and classroom observation exist, a standardized approach to measuring language use is lacking. Examining the same data set, this study analyzed the frequency of L1 English and TL Arabic use in two language classes through three methods: word count, time analysis, and impressionistic judgments from live observations and made comparisons of results generated by three methods as well as the feasibility. Focusing …

Dead Woman Walking: Articulating Historical Violence Toward The Femme Through Visual Art And Cultural Experience, Angelica Elizabeth Starcovic May 2024

Dead Woman Walking: Articulating Historical Violence Toward The Femme Through Visual Art And Cultural Experience, Angelica Elizabeth Starcovic

Theses - ALL

Individual identity formation is a crucial tool in my artistic practice. I rely on articulating my experiences as femme to reclaim and denounce the signifiers of femininity invented and perverted by patriarchy. Using historical survey of instances and explorations of fear and violence through art and visual culture, my works reckon with how archaic gender beliefs still entrench themselves in our contemporary worldviews and their psychological results. The deconstructions of these facades uncover the violence and fear ingrained in feminine identity inflicted through bodily control in culture. Here I argue for her humanity against the abject violence culture and media …

Exploring The Impact Of Lake Browning On The Production Of Singlet Oxygen In Adirondack Surface Waters, Birdem Oz May 2024

Exploring The Impact Of Lake Browning On The Production Of Singlet Oxygen In Adirondack Surface Waters, Birdem Oz

Theses - ALL

Many inland lakes in temperate and boreal regions, including those in the Adirondack region of New York, are experiencing browning due to increased terrestrial inputs of colored dissolved organic matter (DOM). This phenomenon results from watershed recovery following declines in atmospheric acid deposition and shifts in precipitation patterns. Close coupling of changes in dissolved organic carbon levels and DOM quality in Adirondack lakes has important implications for ecosystem services, ranging from aquatic food web functioning to drinking water production. However, comparatively little is known about the potential effects of lake browning on carbon cycling and contaminant attenuation driven by the …
