Higher Education Faculty Perceptions Of Soft Skill Gaps In Components Of Emotional Intelligence Among Recent Community College Graduates, Bryce Timothy Wiley
Higher Education Faculty Perceptions Of Soft Skill Gaps In Components Of Emotional Intelligence Among Recent Community College Graduates, Bryce Timothy Wiley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed by this basic qualitative study was that recent college graduates may lack the soft skills needed for success in the job market. This gap may cause graduates to lack the skills required for employability. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore faculty perceptions of soft skill gaps in components of emotional intelligence—self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills—among recent college graduates. The study was conceptualized through the lens of Goleman’s emotional intelligence theoretical framework. Research questions asked college faculty about their views of soft skill deficits among recent college graduates in self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, …
Perceptions Of Developmental Disability Service Providers, On How The Judicial System Responses To Persons With Developmental Disabilities., Donna Whilby
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The situation or issue that prompted me to search the literature was observing the persons with developmental disabilities circling the judicial system due to multiple encounters with law enforcement. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how the Northeast Florida judicial system could improve the outcomes of persons with developmental disabilities by reducing and preventing multiple encounters. The empowerment theory was the most appropriate theory for my study. Empowerment theory indicates that it is imperative to encourage people, especially those who have a psychological deficit, to lean into their resources to gain and utilize their power in society. …

It is imperative for individuals to exhibit flexible behaviour according to ecological context, such as available resources or predation threat. Manipulative studies on responses to threat often focus on behaviour in the presence of a single indicator for the potential of predation, whereas in the wild perception of threat will probably be more nuanced. Here, we examine the collective behaviour of eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) subject to five differing threat scenarios relating to the presence and hunger state of a jade perch (Scortum barcoo). Across threat scenarios, groups exhibit unique behavioural profiles that differ in the durations that particular collective …

Basal progenitor cells are crucial for maintaining foregut (the esophagus and forestomach) homeostasis. When their function is dysregulated, it can promote inflammation and tumorigenesis. However, the mechanisms underlying these processes remain largely unclear. Here, we employ genetic mouse models to reveal that Jag1/2 regulate esophageal homeostasis and foregut tumorigenesis by modulating the function of basal progenitor cells. Deletion of Jag1/2 in mice disrupts esophageal and forestomach epithelial homeostasis. Mechanistically, Jag1/2 deficiency impairs activation of Notch signaling, leading to reduced squamous epithelial differentiation and expansion of basal progenitor cells. Moreover, Jag1/2 deficiency exacerbates the deoxycholic acid (DCA)-induced squamous epithelial injury and …

Neurulation is a highly synchronized biomechanical process leading to the formation of the brain and spinal cord, and its failure leads to neural tube defects (NTDs). Although we are rapidly learning the genetic mechanisms underlying NTDs, the biomechanical aspects are largely unknown. To understand the correlation between NTDs and tissue stiffness during neural tube closure (NTC), we imaged an NTD murine model using optical coherence tomography (OCT), Brillouin microscopy and confocal fluorescence microscopy. Here, we associate structural information from OCT with local stiffness from the Brillouin signal of embryos undergoing neurulation. The stiffness of neuroepithelial tissues in Mthfd1l null embryos …

“How does one discover solace and belonging within these layered narratives?”
In mythology, narratives were once created to answer the incomprehensible questions of an era. These narratives unveil half-truths, customs, and convictions. K(now) W(here) is based on the experience of the artist who is Chinese and immigrated to South Africa at a young age; she elaborates the story about assimilation, authenticity, tales of her ancestral roots, and, most often, myths of identity.
The artist used narratives from Chinese mythology, collaged physically and metaphorically using tangible objects from other’s homes in combination with photography, digital media, and domestic items and assemblage …

Assessment Of Gait, Balance, And Falls In Individuals With Neurodegenerative Diseases, Lauren Tueth
WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs
Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of disorders that impact the brain and lead to neuronal degeneration. This degeneration causes many different symptoms, which are often grouped into motor, cognitive, and psychiatric domains. Individuals with these disorders can experience symptoms from multiple domains at the same time, but little is known about how these distinct symptoms may impact each other.
In Chapter 2, we explored the intersection of balance and cognitive impairment in individuals with Alzheimer disease (AD). AD is traditionally discussed in the context of the dementia symptoms, but people with AD also experience motor deficits. Falls are a huge …

Measurement Of And Contributors To Developmental Coordination Impairment, Jeffrey D. Konrad
WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs
Movement drives childhood development. As motor skills improve across development, a child becomes capable of greater interactions with their physical and social environment. Children with motor impairments miss out on these interaction opportunities and their development across a variety of domains can suffer. There is accumulating evidence that poor motor competence relates to an array of developmental outcomes such as educational achievement, reading skills, social development, and emotional regulation. Two developmentally important motor impairments are poor motor competence and hyperactivity which are associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Critical to …

Extracellular vesicles mediate intercellular communication by transporting biologically active macromolecules. Our prior studies have demonstrated that the nuclear factor of activated T cell cytoplasmic member 3 (NFATc3) is activated in mouse pulmonary macrophages in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Inhibition of NFATc3 activation by a novel cell-permeable calcineurin peptide inhibitor CNI103 mitigated the development of acute lung injury (ALI) in LPS-treated mice. Although pro-inflammatory lipid mediators are known contributors to lung inflammation and injury, it remains unclear whether the calcineurin-NFATc pathway regulates extracellular vesicle (EV) lipid content and if this content contributes to ALI pathogenesis. In this study, EVs from mouse …

Longitudinal monitoring of patients with advanced cancers is crucial to evaluate both disease burden and treatment response. Current liquid biopsy approaches mostly rely on the detection of DNA-based biomarkers. However, plasma RNA analysis can unleash tremendous opportunities for tumor state interrogation and molecular subtyping. Through the application of deep learning algorithms to the deconvolved transcriptomes of RNA within plasma extracellular vesicles (evRNA), we successfully predicted consensus molecular subtypes in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Analysis of plasma evRNA also enabled monitoring of changes in transcriptomic subtype under treatment selection pressure and identification of molecular pathways associated with recurrence. This approach …

PURPOSE: Mutations in the ATM gene are common in multiple cancers, but clinical studies of therapies targeting ATM-aberrant cancers have yielded mixed results. Refinement of ATM loss of function (LOF) as a predictive biomarker of response is urgently needed.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We present the first disclosure and preclinical development of a novel, selective ATR inhibitor, ART0380, and test its antitumor activity in multiple preclinical cancer models. To refine ATM LOF as a predictive biomarker, we performed a comprehensive pan-cancer analysis of ATM variants in patient tumors and then assessed the ATM variant-to-protein relationship. Finally, we assessed a novel ATM LOF …

Cellular sensitivity to ferroptosis is primarily regulated by mechanisms mediating lipid hydroperoxide detoxification. We show that inositol-requiring enzyme 1 (IRE1α), an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) resident protein critical for the unfolded protein response (UPR), also determines cellular sensitivity to ferroptosis. Cancer and normal cells depleted of IRE1α gain resistance to ferroptosis, while enhanced IRE1α expression promotes sensitivity to ferroptosis. Mechanistically, IRE1α's endoribonuclease activity cleaves and down-regulates the mRNA of key glutathione biosynthesis regulators glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC) and solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11). This activity of IRE1α is independent of its role in regulating the UPR and is …

The carbon (C) dynamics of boreal coniferous swamps are a largely understudied component of wetland carbon cycling. We investigated the above- and below-ground carbon stocks and growing season carbon dioxide (CO 2) and methane (CH 4) fluxes from a representative boreal coniferous swamp in northern Alberta, Canada in 2022. Tree inventories, understory vegetation biomass and peat cores were collected across three sub-sites within the broader swamp, with gas flux collars placed in the dominant plant communities present. Alongside the C flux measurements, environmental variables such as water table depth, soil temperature and growing season understory green leaf phenology …
Explosions Of Cold War Memory: The Queer Overdetermination Of U.S. Imperial Anxiety In The Ugly American, Jasmine Shirey
Explosions Of Cold War Memory: The Queer Overdetermination Of U.S. Imperial Anxiety In The Ugly American, Jasmine Shirey
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
In 1958, William Lederer and Eugene Burdick were driven to spend six days frantically drafting a novel. In their view, the United States was losing the Cold War and the nation’s post-war image of innovation and benevolence was under threat. Lederer and Burdick feared that U.S. diplomacy was chauvinistic and detached and, as such, the United States was beginning to be associated with the very forms of imperialism it claimed to fight. This anxiety over U.S. imperialism gave rise to The Ugly American, in which Lederer and Burdick appear to attempt to alleviate imperial anxieties by providing an alternative …
Towards Machine Proficiency With Semantic Underspecification, Zachary S. Gottesman
Towards Machine Proficiency With Semantic Underspecification, Zachary S. Gottesman
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Human natural language communication frequently relies on extra-linguistic information to fill in gaps in the linguistic signal left by semantic underspecification, or the omission of details that can be inferred from prior knowledge or other modalities. Underspecification is particularly common in conversations between acquaintances, since these interlocutors share context. Underspecification is a key and beneficial feature of natural language that improves efficiency, although it can cause communication to fail if it is not resolved correctly. For language models to communicate effectively and in a human-like fashion, they must learn how to recognize and utilize underspecified language. This thesis argues that …

Designing Future Agriculture: Design For Complex Systems And Cross-Cultural Interactions, Karina Madzari
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Climate change is now recognized by businesses as a major challenge, prompting the agribusiness sector to transform to meet sustainability goals. However, there are many ways to achieve sustainability. Precision agriculture and agroecology are two concepts that evolved from conventional and regenerative approaches respectively, and offer distinct perspectives on sustainability attainment. Precision agriculture relies on technological solutions like artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, gene editing, and carbon dioxide removal technologies (CDR) and aims to revolutionize industry operations through automatization. Agroecology, on the other hand, creates a symbiotic relationship between farming practices and ecosystem services. It aims to replace non-renewable resources with …

We test the predictions of hadronic interaction models regarding the depth of maximum of air-shower profiles, Xmax, and ground-particle signals in water-Cherenkov detectors at 1000 m from the shower core, S(1000), using the data from the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The test consists of fitting the measured two-dimensional (S(1000), Xmax) distributions using templates for simulated air showers produced with hadronic interaction models epos-lhc, qgsjet-ii-04, sibyll 2.3d and leaving the scales of predicted Xmax and the signals from hadronic component at ground as free-fit parameters. The method relies on the assumption that the mass composition remains …

Development And Evaluation Of Muon Scattering Tomography Reconstruction Techniques For Spent Fuel Verification, Jesus J. Valencia
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
The International Atomic Energy Agency has acknowledged the need to “efficiently verify and maintain knowledge of spent fuel in shielding/storage/transport containers at all points in their life cycle”. Cosmic-ray muon scattering tomography has shown potential to create reconstruction images of dry cask contents that would be useful for in-situ verification of spent fuel within dry casks.
In this document, several muon scattering tomography reconstruction techniques are explored using experimental track data through a partially filled dry cask container and steel drum test object. Two three-dimensional reconstruction techniques, a backprojection and newly developed combined depth of field algorithm, are evaluated. The …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In the realm of medical diagnosis, intuitionistic fuzzy data serves as a valuable tool for representing information that is uncertain and imprecise. Nevertheless, decision-making based on this kind of knowledge can be quite challenging due to the inherent vagueness of the data. To address this issue, we employ power aggregation operators, which prove effective in combining several sources of data, such as expert thoughts and patient information. This allows for a more correct diagnosis; a particularly crucial aspect of medical practice where precise and timely diagnoses can significantly impact medication policy and patient results. In our research, we introduce a …

On Christmas Day 1943, Somewhere in Russia, Siegfried Sinz enjoyed a jovial moment with his unit of the German Army. It was a refreshing break from the trials of war, for he had been on the eastern front since June of 1941. Cautiousness, endemic of their proximity to the battle front, attended the preparations for the event. All windows needed to be sealed to prevent light from escaping into the night lest any Russians on patrol ascertain their location and attack. Unfortunately, someone did not seal one of the windows completely; a ray of light escaped to illuminate the darkened …
