On An Equivalence Of Divisors On M̄0,N From Gromov-Witten Theory And Conformal Blocks, Linda Chen Jun 2024

On An Equivalence Of Divisors On M̄0,N From Gromov-Witten Theory And Conformal Blocks, Linda Chen

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

We consider a conjecture that identifies two types of base point free divisors on M̄0,n. The first arises from Gromov-Witten theory of a Grassmannian. The second comes from first Chern classes of vector bundles associated with simple Lie algebras in type A. Here we reduce this conjecture on M̄0,n to the same statement for n = 4. A reinterpretation leads to a proof of the conjecture on M̄0,n for a large class, and we give sufficient conditions for the non-vanishing of these divisors.

Leveraging Designed Simulations And Machine Learning To Develop A Surrogate Model For Optimizing The Gas–Downhole Water Sink–Assisted Gravity Drainage (Gdws-Agd) Process To Improve Clean Oil Production, Watheq J. Al-Mudhafar, Dandina N. Rao, Andrew K. Wojtanowicz Jun 2024

Leveraging Designed Simulations And Machine Learning To Develop A Surrogate Model For Optimizing The Gas–Downhole Water Sink–Assisted Gravity Drainage (Gdws-Agd) Process To Improve Clean Oil Production, Watheq J. Al-Mudhafar, Dandina N. Rao, Andrew K. Wojtanowicz

Faculty Publications

The Gas and Downhole Water Sink–Assisted Gravity Drainage (GDWS-AGD) process addresses gas flooding limitations in reservoirs surrounded by infinite-acting aquifers, particularly water coning. The GDWS-AGD technique reduces water cut in oil production wells, improves gas injectivity, and optimizes oil recovery, especially in reservoirs with high water coning. The GDWS-AGD process installs two 7-inch production casings bilaterally. Then, two 2-3/8-inch horizontal tubings are completed. One tubing produces oil above the oil–water contact (OWC) area, while the other drains water below it. A hydraulic packer in the casing separates the two completions. The water sink completion uses a submersible pump to prevent …

Clinical Lab Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

A laboratory-developed test (LDT) using analyte-specific reagents has been optimized on a commercial platform to detect macrolide resistance-associated mutations (MRM) in 23S rRNA from Mycoplasmoides genitalium from primary clinical specimens. In this study, MRM-LDT was applied to a multi-specimen source study set. One thousand four hundred ninety-five primary specimens testing positive for M. genitalium by commercial transcription-mediated amplification (TMA) were initially titered by the TMA assay using serial 10-fold dilutions to semi-quantitate target nucleic acid burden. Primary specimens were then processed for MRM detection using the MRM-LDT. Findings were stratified by gender and specimen source. The mean log10 target …

A Generic Blood Banking And Transfusion Process-Oriented Architecture For Virtual Organizations, Anwar Rjoop, Shaima Elhaj, Dina Tbaishat, Yousra Odeh, Asem Mansour, Mohammed Odeh Jun 2024

A Generic Blood Banking And Transfusion Process-Oriented Architecture For Virtual Organizations, Anwar Rjoop, Shaima Elhaj, Dina Tbaishat, Yousra Odeh, Asem Mansour, Mohammed Odeh

All Works

Background Blood banks are an important part of healthcare systems. They embrace critical processes that start with donor recruitment and blood collection, followed by blood processing to produce different types of blood components used in transfusions, blood storage, blood distribution, and transfusion. Blood components must be generated at high quality, preserved safely, and transfused in a timely manner. This can be achieved by operating interrelated processes within a complex network. There is no comprehensive blueprint of Blood Banking and Transfusion (BB&T) processes and their relationships; therefore, this study aims to develop and evaluate a BB&T process architecture using the Riva …

Infusing Values Into Written Exposure Therapy: A Comparison Study, Maegan Campbell Jun 2024

Infusing Values Into Written Exposure Therapy: A Comparison Study, Maegan Campbell

Dissertations

Written Exposure Therapy is a brief, efficacious intervention for the treatment of PTSD symptoms. The WET protocol calls for the infusion of values into therapeutic work, however, does not detail how to incorporate these values work into the highly scripted treatment. This study compared the standard WET protocol with WET infused with values. The study examined differences across the two conditions on seven variables (PTSD scores, depression scores, value importance and consistency, quality of life, psychological flexibility, customer satisfaction, and therapeutic alliance). The sample was largely homogenous in gender, ethnicity, sexuality, and reported index trauma. The sample was largely white …

An Experimental Study Of Supervised Machine Learning Techniques For Minor Class Prediction Utilizing Kernel Density Estimation: Factors Impacting Model Performance, Abdullah Mana Alfarwan Jun 2024

An Experimental Study Of Supervised Machine Learning Techniques For Minor Class Prediction Utilizing Kernel Density Estimation: Factors Impacting Model Performance, Abdullah Mana Alfarwan

Dissertations

This dissertation examined classification outcome differences among four popular individual supervised machine learning (ISML) models (logistic regression, decision tree, support vector machine, and multilayer perceptron) when predicting minor class membership within imbalanced datasets. The study context and the theoretical population sampled focus on one aspect of the larger problem of student retention and dropout prediction in higher education (HE): identification.

This study differs from current literature by implementing an experimental design approach with simulated student data that closely mirrors HE situational and student data. Specifically, this study tested the predictive ability of the four ISML classification models (CLS) under experimentally …

Using Video Prompting To Teach Daily Living Skills To Young Adults With Disabilities, Melissa Anne Rajter Jun 2024

Using Video Prompting To Teach Daily Living Skills To Young Adults With Disabilities, Melissa Anne Rajter

Dissertations

Young adults with disabilities may experience difficulties with the daily living skill of meal preparation. Such skills are significant for independent living, employment, and overall quality of life. Previous research has identified video prompting daily living skills as an effective practice that supports independent living. Furthermore, research on young adults with disabilities and video prompting daily living skills has shown an increase in the percentage of correct responses for meal preparation, compared to no use of video prompting. The purpose of the present study was to teach and assess three cooking recipes as a daily living skill for seven young …

Gateway And Non-Gateway Issues In The Enforcement Of Agreements To Arbitrate, George A. Bermann Jun 2024

Gateway And Non-Gateway Issues In The Enforcement Of Agreements To Arbitrate, George A. Bermann

Faculty Scholarship

Far greater attention is given in literature on international arbitration to limitations on the enforceability of arbitral awards than on the enforceability of agreements to arbitrate. This chapter seeks to redress the balance. While rulings on the enforceability of an award is incontrovertibly within the jurisdiction of the court asked to enforce the award, authority to determine the enforceability of an arbitration agreement is allocated between courts and arbitral tribunals themselves. The chapter seeks to determine which defenses to enforcement of arbitration agreements may be lodged before a court ("gateway issues") and which are necessarily reserved to the tribunal ("non-gateway …

Esg Factors In Municipal Securities Disclosures: Toward A Materiality Concept, Justin Marlowe Jun 2024

Esg Factors In Municipal Securities Disclosures: Toward A Materiality Concept, Justin Marlowe

Northern Illinois University Law Review

State and local governments in the United States finance most of their infrastructure investment with debt instruments known as municipal bonds. The federal government does not directly regulate when or how municipal issuers access the municipal bond market, and only indirectly regulates the content of municipal borrowers’ disclosure to investors. A consequence of that unique regulatory structure is that municipal borrowers have wide discretion on whether to disclose falling property values, rising crime rates, and other long-term threats to their ability to repay investors. This is at odds with the ever-expanding information needs of investors who seek to align their …

Firearms Carceralism, Jacob D. Charles Jun 2024

Firearms Carceralism, Jacob D. Charles

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Gun violence is a pressing national concern. And it has been for decades. Throughout nearly all that time, the primary tool lawmakers have deployed to stanch the violence has been the machinery of the criminal law. Increased policing, intrusive surveillance, vigorous prosecution, and punitive penalties are showered on gun offenders. This Article spotlights and specifies this approach--what it calls “firearms carceralism”--and details how a decades-long bipartisan consensus generated a set of state-centered solutions to gun violence that has not meaningfully impacted the problem. Instead, those policies have exacerbated racial inequity and compounded civic and community harms. The Article traces the …

Snpaimer: R Package For Evaluating Ancestry Informative Marker Contributions In Non-Model Population Diagnostics, Kim L. Vertacnik, Oksana V. Vernygora, Julian R. Dupuis

Entomology Faculty Publications

Motivation: Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers are increasingly popular for population genomics and inferring ancestry for individuals of unknown origin. Because large SNP datasets are impractical for rapid and routine analysis, diagnostics rely on panels of highly informative markers. Strategies exist for selecting these markers, however, resources for efficiently evaluating their performance are limited for non-model systems.

Results: snpAIMeR is a user-friendly R package that evaluates the efficacy of genomic markers for the cluster assignment of unknown individuals. It is intended to help minimize panel size and genotyping effort by determining the informativeness of candidate diagnostic markers. Provided genotype data …

Team F16: Autonomous Research Plane, Andrew Sugamele, Andrew Whitacre, Nicholas Toal, Cole Bushur

Mechanical Engineering

The autonomous research plane is a remote-controlled plane used for both in-flight data collection and to explore new manufacturing methods for Design Build Fly, an engineering club on campus. The club does not have the resources or time to implement data collection for their competition plane, so we built a plane in parallel, following similar rules to mimic the work and schedule that the club would use during their season. We first did research and analysis to determine the structure of the plane, geometry of wings, sizing of the tail, and what airfoil to choose. The manufacturing process included making …

The Needless Search For A Founding-Era "Hearsay" Definition, Jeffrey Bellin Jun 2024

The Needless Search For A Founding-Era "Hearsay" Definition, Jeffrey Bellin

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Modern Confrontation Clause doctrine permits only unconfronted “out-of-court statements that would have been admissible in a criminal case at the time of the founding.” To operationalize this concept, the Supreme Court identifies “testimonial hearsay” as the Clause’s primary concern. Its opinions regularly dive into the historical record to refine what counts as “testimonial” but ignore that record in defining “hearsay.” This omission cannot last. Cases in the lower courts, and one on the Court’s recent docket, concern testimonial but (arguably) non-hearsay statements. And while confrontation jurisprudence is supposed to be tied to founding-era evidence law, the “hearsay” definition, casually referenced …

Criminal Legal Reform In New Hampshire: One Law Professor's Activism, Albert E. Scherr Jun 2024

Criminal Legal Reform In New Hampshire: One Law Professor's Activism, Albert E. Scherr

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

Criminal legal reform is a perpetual work in progress. The system itself is, at best, maddeningly imperfect. It too often fails to produce anything close to justice. Structural problems afflict the system in a way that incarcerates too many people, particularly people of color. For example, over the last thirty years, the Innocence Project has demonstrated imperfections in the system caused by faulty eyewitness identification procedures by ineffective assistance of counsel, by prosecutorial misconduct, by shoddy forensic practices and by police behavior that produced false confessions.

That the United States has well over fifty-one independent criminal legal systems frustrates efforts …

Bridging The Paradigmatic Crevasse Between Lawyers And Scientists: The Need For New Institutional Models, Stanley P. Kowalski, Stanley Kowalski

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

The professions of science and law have traditionally been siloed paradigms, operating often in tandem with each other but rarely intersecting in the interdisciplinary pasture which separates them, a pasture from which an abundance of synergistic collaboration and ensuing creative concepts might sprout. However, the erstwhile never the twain shall meet situation is neither realistic nor even tenable in the current century, a century increasingly dominated by science, technology, invention, innovation, and intellectual property. Simply put, whereas lawyers are risk averse and build constructed realities to argue points and serve clients, scientists seek an objective assessment of truth and accept …

Nextgen Licensure & Accreditation, Nachman N. Gutowski Jun 2024

Nextgen Licensure & Accreditation, Nachman N. Gutowski

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

The Bar Exam is changing. The National Conference of Bar Examiners is pushing full steam ahead with a replacement for the current elements that make up the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE). This new exam, called the NextGen Bar Exam (NextGen), is scheduled to launch in Summer 2026. Current American Bar Association (ABA) accreditation standards do not consider the coming changes. A full picture of what the adjustments will look like is hazy and very much in the trial stages still. These shifts impact current law students, the legal education practices of law schools, and accreditation standards. There is a near-universal …

How To Handle The Truth: Avoiding Improper Sentencing Argument In Courts-Martial, Cooper C. Millhouse, Stephen Paul Jun 2024

How To Handle The Truth: Avoiding Improper Sentencing Argument In Courts-Martial, Cooper C. Millhouse, Stephen Paul

Hofstra Law Review

The Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces has identified a variety of sentencing arguments as improper. These arguments are improper because they encourage courts-martial to abandon disinterested impartiality or because they ask courts-martial to consider facts or opinions unrelated to the accused’s culpability. This Article catalogs and classifies the improper arguments that violate these principles for use by the JAG Corps.

The New Legal Ethics: The 2024 Howard Lichtenstein Distinguished Professorship In Legal Ethics Lecture, W. Bradley Wendel Jun 2024

The New Legal Ethics: The 2024 Howard Lichtenstein Distinguished Professorship In Legal Ethics Lecture, W. Bradley Wendel

Hofstra Law Review

The article reflects on the inaugural Howard Lichtenstein Lecture in Legal Ethics, delivered by Tom Shaffer in 1989, and his exploration of the moral dimensions of lawyer professionalism. Topics include Shaffer's view on the moral virtues that lawyers should cultivate, such as honor, integrity, and fairness, the ideal of the "gentleman-lawyer" exemplified by characters like Atticus Finch, and the concept of complicity in the legal profession.
