Zirconium Metal-Organic Cages: Synthetic Development Of Chromium-Functionalized Ligands, Jim P. Heller, Jonathan E. Pines, Miguel I. Gonzalez
Wetterhahn Science Symposium Posters
Metal-organic cages (MOCs) are a class of highly porous molecules composed of inorganic clusters bridged by highly tunable organic ligands. The synthesis and development of various ligands could allow for more selective and efficient catalysts. Specifically, Chromium-based homogeneous catalysts have recently been commercialized due to their high selectivity in the production of 1-hexene and 1-octene. This project aims to synthesize reusable heterogeneous catalysts composed of chromium-functionalized zirconium MOCs deposited on mesoporous supports.
The current focus of this project is to synthesize and purify the "SNS Ligand." This ligand can coordinate to chromium via its S—N—S moiety. This project specifically focuses …

Academic Freedom's Inflection Point, Jerry C. Edwards
Law Faculty Scholarship
Academic freedom faces an existential crisis. The Trump administration, building on a movement that began in the states, is seeking ideological conquest of higher education. Some universities have already surrendered. Others fight on, facing an endless barrage of assaults on their institutional autonomy. Faculty too have chosen to resist, relying on their free expression rights. One of the most potent weapons in higher education’s arsenal is the constitutional academic freedom doctrine, a First Amendment protection that safeguards faculty’s academic expression and universities’ academic judgments. But the Supreme Court’s embrace of history and tradition as a focal point of its individual …

A Distinctly Christian Understanding Of The Technical Details In Engineering, Paul Griffioen
A Distinctly Christian Understanding Of The Technical Details In Engineering, Paul Griffioen
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Within engineering disciplines, much attention has been given to developing pedagogical techniques and practical applications that are distinctly Christian. However, not as much attention has been given to understanding technical engineering content from a distinctly Christian perspective. The main reason is that the technical details of engineering seem to be the same for both Christians and non-Christians. After all, does being a Christian have any impact on the content of specific technical details like integration and finite element analysis? Since the vast majority of time in engineering jobs, research, and teaching is spent on specific technical details, this is a …
Investigating The Moderating Roles Of Adolescent Peer Relationship Difficulties And Prosocial Behavior On The Relationship Between Triangulation And Adolescent Emotional Symptoms During Parental Divorce, Taylor Kalei Demotta
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
The divorce process is a stressful, transitional period that is widely experienced by families in the United States. This process incites a variety of stressors and deleterious family dynamics that impact children and adolescents. The divorce literature has identified parental conflict as a significant contributor to youth outcomes following divorce. Therefore, researchers have aimed to investigate the specific dynamics occurring during interparental discord that may influence youth. Triangulation, or the involvement of children in parental disagreements, has been found to mediate the relationship between parental conflict and adolescents’ internalizing symptoms. Adolescents may be particularly vulnerable to triangulation due to increases …

Reuse As A Sustainable Construction Approach For Heritage Conservation In Mosul, Iraq., Raad Sultan
Reuse As A Sustainable Construction Approach For Heritage Conservation In Mosul, Iraq., Raad Sultan
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
The destruction of heritage elements during war leads to the loss of cultural and historical information. In Mosul's Old City, the 2014-17 conflict caused extensive damage to architectural and cultural assets, creating significant challenges for preserving and reusing their heritage elements. Although several studies address condition diagnosis, most rely on theoretical frameworks and rarely consider elements affected by war and conflict. Because the condition of a component directly influences its reusability, this lack of field-based diagnostic research represents a significant knowledge gap. A review of the literature on heritage documentation, condition diagnosis, and reuse assessment identified a clear research gap …
The Persistence Of Mindfulness Training: Grit As An Indicator Of Student-Athletes’ Mental Health, Andrew J. Hylen
The Persistence Of Mindfulness Training: Grit As An Indicator Of Student-Athletes’ Mental Health, Andrew J. Hylen
Masters Projects
Finding ways for collegiate student-athletes to improve and manage mental health can boost persistence and retention rates athletically and academically (Credé et al., 2017; Mohebi et al., 2021). Providing mental health resources is not enough to support student-athletes because of mental health stigma and the fear of losing playing time from accepting help for physical or mental injury (Criticos et al., 2020; Sheffield & Stutts, 2020). Implementing sports team mindfulness-based mental health interventions for collegiate student-athletes can improve student-athletes’ overall well-being (Augustus et al., 2023; O’Brien & Kilrea, 2021). Additionally, utilizing grit theory as a predictive measure of one’s passion …
Crime, Economic Forces And Trucks Crossings In The Us–Mexico Border Region, René Cabral, André Varella Mollick, Eduardo Saucedo
Crime, Economic Forces And Trucks Crossings In The Us–Mexico Border Region, René Cabral, André Varella Mollick, Eduardo Saucedo
School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
We investigate northbound loaded truck crossings from Mexico to the United States between 2015 and 2023. A weaker peso, exports and US industrial production positively affect loaded containers. Truck robberies at the municipal level show no statistically significant relationship with truck loadings, whereas truck robberies at the national and state levels present a negative, persistent association. Results suggest that Mexico–US trade would benefit from lower average Mexican crime rates. In addition to comparing Texas with other border states, this study documents the role of crime specific to the transportation sector as a negative relevant driver of truck crossings to the …

A Faith And Technology Resource Hub: Building The Christian Engineer’S Bookshelf, Gayle Ermer, Derek Schuurman
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
A wealth of material related to the interactions between faith and technology has been generated over time to help Christian engineers reflect on and evaluate their work and technology development more generally. However, there is currently no central location where this large variety of resources can easily be accessed. This paper will describe the process of developing a faith and technology resource hub. The vision for the hub is that it will include a comprehensive searchable directory of resources addressing faith and technology, as well as a browsable, organized, curated, and annotated set of webpages containing links to particularly important …

Improving medication adherence in adolescents who had a liver transplant (iMALT), a prospective, block-randomized, single-blind, controlled multisite study in 13 pediatric transplant centers, used the medication level variability index (MLVI) to identify nonadherent adolescents. It compared a 2-year remote behavioral telemetric intervention (TI) that focused on adherence and addressed barriers to standard of care (SOC). The primary endpoint was the composite incidence of centrally determined (3 masked pathologists) rejection, death, retransplantation, or consent withdrawal. In 148 participants (TI group, n = 72 and the SOC group, n = 76), with a mean age 15.5 years, there were twice as many …

What My Grandma Ate, What My Grandma Wrote: Culinary Memory, Migration, And Changing Foodways In A Cretan–Turkish Household, Sedef Özgönül Donuktan
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper explores the difference between daily eating habits (what is “eaten”) and handwritten recipe notebooks (what is “written”) within a Cretan-Turkish kinship network influenced by migration and resettlement. By combining oral history interviews with five women and analysing 242 notebook recipes, the study shows that these handwritten books are not just passive records of daily meals. Instead, they serve as selective domestic archives shaped by a “festive bias,” standardisation, and social value. The research indicates that while routine meals (such as stews) depend on embodied, unrecorded knowledge, the notebooks mainly contain special dough recipes using modern industrial ingredients like …
Wading In The Waters: The Public’S Use Rights In Non-Navigable Streams, Loren Vigil
Wading In The Waters: The Public’S Use Rights In Non-Navigable Streams, Loren Vigil
Natural Resources Journal
In New Mexico, the water law of prior appropriation rules. As a result, no individual holds a complete right to ownership of water in New Mexico. Instead, New Mexico landowners hold only a right to put appropriated waters to beneficial use. Appropriation of waters requires diversion, a distinct feature that prevents landowners from claiming natural watercourses flowing through their property boundaries. The unappropriated waters of the state are then vested in the state via public trust, to be used and enjoyed by the public. This public right to use often abuts landowner property rights, as water flows over and through …
The Role Of Anticipatory, Preparatory, And Transformative Governance In Wildfire And Watershed Resilience Strategies, Robin Kundis Craig, Melinda Morgan
The Role Of Anticipatory, Preparatory, And Transformative Governance In Wildfire And Watershed Resilience Strategies, Robin Kundis Craig, Melinda Morgan
Natural Resources Journal
Wildfire is a game-changer for both communities and ecosystems throughout the West, including in New Mexico. Building resilience to increasing numbers of wildfire events, especially when wildfires can shift communities, ecosystems, and combined social ecological systems (“SESs”) past tipping points and into new regimes requires new approaches to governance. Focusing on the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon fire and New Mexico residents’ ongoing response, this Article examines post-fire needs before surveying new modes of governance that can help to address those needs in a climate change era. It ends with a summary of our engagement with the participants in the “Life After …

Climate Change, Justice, And Equity In The Adjudication Of Hermit’S Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Claims, Brett Phelps
Natural Resources Journal
Large-scale, climate-driven wildfire has become a recurring and foreseeable feature of life in the American West, creating long-term consequences for forests, watersheds, and rural communities. The 2022 Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire, the largest wildfire in New Mexico history, provides an opportunity to examine how a federally created compensation statute functions once a climate disaster moves from legislation and rulemaking into adjudication. Sparked by prescribed burns on public land, the fire led Congress to enact the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Assistance Act, directing the Federal Emergency Management Agency (“FEMA”) to provide expeditious and just compensation for injuries resulting from the fire. …

Measuring Stock Market Inefficiency Using A Multilayer Composite Efficiency Index: A Case Of The Egyptian Exchange, Patrick K. Owido, Hiroki Sayama
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
Financial markets play a critical role in resource allocation. Their performance depends on the decisions of millions of independent investors constantly reacting to one another. Their informational efficiency remains a subject of debate across economic systems. When informational efficiency is present at the weak form, historical price information should not consistently predict future returns. Several empirical tests of this hypothesis often focus on the behavior of aggregate market indices, and use individual efficiency proxies such as autocorrelation, GARCH-type volatility, or entropy-based measures to measure efficiency. This has often yielded mixed results, particularly in emerging markets. Here we show that testing …

This study examined the measurement invariance of an affective engagement scale across gender and school location among secondary school students in Cross River State, Nigeria. The study was premised on the critical role of affective engagement in educational equity and quality. Three research purposes, each with corresponding research questions and hypotheses, were formulated in the study. We used a stratified random sampling to select 500 respondents from a diverse group of students (gender and school location). The Student Engagement Instrument by Appleton et al. (2006) was the instrument adopted for data collection. The instrument underwent a validation process, resulting in …

On the night of 03 August 2024, Adam Kelwick, the imam from the Abdullah Quillian Society Mosque in Liverpool crossed police lines and presented anti-immigration protesters with burgers and chips prepared in the mosque kitchen. This took place in the aftermath of the Southport stabbings and the worst outbreak of civil disorder in Britain for more than a decade. “We decided to deal with those people who came to protest against us in a way which we hoped could open up hearts and minds. We wanted to cook food for them.” This paper will examine the power of food to …

Food In Dinneen’S Foclóir Gaedhilge Agus Béarla, John D. Mulcahy
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Inspired by the work of the late Manchán Magan, this paper examines Irish food and hospitality through the lens of historical lexicography using the 1927 edition of Fr Patrick Dinneen’s Foclóir Gaedhilge agus Béarla as a linguistic “time capsule”. By examining Irish words connected with everyday eating, the paper traces how these words embody resilience, reciprocity, and hope in the face of recurring crises such as famine, emigration, and political upheaval. The paper also draws attention to roles associated with food provision and banqueting, underlining the long-standing importance of hospitality in Irish society. This approach uncovers how hospitality was understood …

Former Corporate Employees And The Collective Entity Doctrine, Coleman Raush
Former Corporate Employees And The Collective Entity Doctrine, Coleman Raush
Florida Law Review
The Fifth Amendment’s Self-Incrimination Clause prevents those under criminal or civil investigation from being compelled to incriminate themselves, but there is a major exception: the collective entity doctrine. The collective entity doctrine provides that no person may refuse to produce corporate documents under the Self-Incrimination Clause when he holds those documents in a representative capacity on behalf of a corporation. The United States Supreme Court, in its most recent decision on the issue, reasoned that an employee holding corporate documents in this manner produces them on behalf of the corporation and not in his own personal capacity. Thus, the Self-Incrimination …
