Application Of Existing Statistical Models To Thermal Inactivation Of Escherichia Coli In A Lab-Based Circulating Water Bath And Investigation Of A Salmonella Challenge Model In A 42-Day Broiler Grow-Out In An Updated Facility, Michael Carroll
Theses and Dissertations
The Food Safety Modernization Act has enforced the importance of research in preventative and control measures for known hazards. Experiment 1 applies existing statistical models, Linear and Weibull, to Escherichia coli thermal inactivation in broiler mash feed in a lab-based circulating water bath to simulate conditioning. Linear and Weibull models were determined to be suitable for modeling the thermal inactivation of E. coli in broiler feed. In Experiment 2, a Salmonella challenge model for broilers raised in floor pens in the updated Animal Biosafety Level-2 facility was evaluated over a 42-day grow-out period. Broiler performance and recovery of Salmonella from …

Creating A Chronology Of Claiborne (22ha501): Revisiting And Revising Radiocarbon Assays Of A Poverty Point Site, Olivia Catherine Baumgartel
Theses and Dissertations
The Claiborne site in Hancock County, Mississippi has been considered part of a culture within Poverty Point’s control since it’s discovery in the 1950’s. In this study, I sampled and ran new five new radiocarbon dates from the collections at Mississippi State University. I then created a chronometric hygiene scale, ranked the new and current dates, removed dates from models that did not have the criteria needed to continue. This thesis created a new chronology for the site, placing it within the timeline of Poverty Point but also related it to the Archaic shell mounds in Southeastern North America.
Here I Am, Like I Am: Disability In Twentieth-Century Southern Literature, Rachel M. Bell
Here I Am, Like I Am: Disability In Twentieth-Century Southern Literature, Rachel M. Bell
Theses and Dissertations
The depiction of people with disabilities in American literature has varied considerably throughout the twentieth century. In the south in particular, disabled individuals have been portrayed as violent, licentious, and deceitful. This thesis examines three hallmarks of American southern literature—Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, William Faulkner’s Sanctuary, and the short stories of Flannery O’Connor—to demonstrate the anxiety of that era surrounding disability, as well as how disability works in tandem with race and class. The fixation of these works on the sexual immorality of disabled men reflects the fascination with eugenics in the mid-twentieth century, as do their animalistic …
Longitudinal Influences Of Parental Relationships On Positive Adolescent Functioning, Rebekah Buckley Sparks
Longitudinal Influences Of Parental Relationships On Positive Adolescent Functioning, Rebekah Buckley Sparks
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the longitudinal influences of parental relationships – romantic, co-parenting, and parent-child – on positive adolescent functioning. Utilizing data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, this study investigates how various dimensions of parental relationships impact adolescent well-being at age 15, as measured by the EPOCH scale. Grounded in Attachment Theory and the Life Course Perspective, this research highlights the interconnectedness of early parental interactions and their long-term effects on adolescents’ emotional and social development. Key findings indicate that supportive and stable parental relationships significantly enhance adolescents’ engagement, perseverance, optimism, connectedness, and happiness. The study emphasizes …

Effects Of An Auditory Versus Visual Stimulus On Reaction And Response Time During Countermovement And Squat Jumps, Russell K. Lowell
Theses and Dissertations
This investigation examined the differences in REACT, RT, and jumping performance for the countermovement jump (CMJ) versus squat jump (SJ) when beginning the movement by responding to auditory (AUD) versus visual (VIS) stimuli. The secondary purposes of this investigation are to examine gender and physical activity level differences of the aforementioned metrics and the relationship between maximal strength, REACT, and RT. Twenty-eight participants (females = 16 and males = 12) were split into three groups (low = 6, moderate = 10, and high = 12) based on their perceived physical activity levels in accordance with ACSM physical activity requirements. Over …

According to recent data, American high school students read for pleasure infrequently, which causes them to miss out on the many literacy benefits of increased text exposure, including stronger reading skills, improved vocabulary, and better reading comprehension (NAEP National Report Card, 2023; van Bergen et al., 2020). Frequently, teachers are encouraged to utilize public libraries or library media centers, but these are not always easily available (US Department of Education, 2022). Developing a reading program that supplements classroom instruction using a limited amount of resources has the potential to help many underserved students read more frequently and develop a stronger …

Education For Nursing And Primary Care Providers On Nonpharmacological Management Of Chronic Pain, Ma Teresita Gonzales De Jesus
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Chronic pain is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, with a significant financial burden on those individuals affected, the communities, the healthcare systems, and the government. Chronic pain also interferes with individuals’ daily activities and alters the quality of life. The treatment for chronic pain includes a variety of medications, including prescription opioids and nonprescription such as NSAIDS, acetaminophen, and muscle relaxants. Pharmacological treatments can result in untoward effects. The CDC has recommended nonpharmacological alternative treatment modalities that promote self-management but are not emphasized or utilized in the primary care setting. The staff education program was framed within …

Objective: Telehealth is the use of technology to deliver medical services. Potential uses among veterinarians include consulting with specialists about complicated cases, sending in electronic prescriptions, or meeting with clients to discuss patient health. Although the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic posed many challenges to the veterinary profession, it accelerated the adoption of telehealth among veterinarians. As many of these changes took place quickly in response to the pandemic, many of those in practice did not receive much training or guidance; therefore, this study explores veterinary students' perceptions regarding incorporating telehealth into the veterinary curriculum and the utilization of telehealth in …

In this keynote address, I emphasized the critical role of accurate crime measurement in developing evidence-based policies. I discussed the "dark figure of crime," highlighting how many crimes go unreported, and stressed the importance of victimization surveys in uncovering these hidden crimes to provide a more complete picture of criminal activity.
I also explored how technological advancements, particularly AI, are transforming how we collect and analyze crime data. While AI offers significant benefits in predictive policing and resource allocation, I cautioned about the risks of bias and privacy issues that must be managed carefully.
Regional collaboration, standardization, and inclusivity are …

Using Hermeneutic Phenomenology To Research Teacher Professional Learning, Rosamund Whaley
The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning
The professional growth of teachers is complex to study given the many factors involved in both adult learning and student outcomes. This article proposes phenomenology as an effective philosophy and method to provide a holistic investigation by describing a hermeneutic study of the professional learning experiences of teachers in the International Baccalaureate program. It is hoped this account will clarify some of the misconceptions regarding the different forms of phenomenology and provide detailed guidance to researchers utilizing this methodology to study professional development and other forms of learning in educational contexts.

Building Our Future, King Randall
Liberty University Law Review
Law reviews and other legal journals serve an important role in the legal field. The discussions we host, the scholarship we publish, the ideas we consider, and the positions we advance are the future of the law. Law’s future may defer to its history. It may correct its past sins. It may, in the course of the American experiment, make new mistakes that will challenge and educate the next generation. In many ways, legal journals are the anvils upon which scholars forge the law’s future. For that reason, legal scholarship often has a reputation among academics as an important and …

Is Tax-Funded Education Unconstitutional?, Jeffrey C. Tuomala
Liberty University Law Review
This Article explains why tax-funded education is an unconstitutional establishment of religion in violation of the First Amendment. It analyzes the worldview that sustains the educational establishment and informs Supreme Court jurisprudence—a worldview that falsely bifurcates reality between the secular and the religious.
The Supreme Court has never given serious attention to defining the term religion as used in the First Amendment religion clauses. During the Virginia establishment controversy that culminated in 1786, Virginia provided a definition of religion and identified the fundamental principles on which religious liberty is based. That definition and those principles contrast with the subjective definition …
Sacrificing Our Children At The Altar Of Modern K-12 Public Education, Rena M. Lindevaldsen
Sacrificing Our Children At The Altar Of Modern K-12 Public Education, Rena M. Lindevaldsen
Liberty University Law Review
Should publicly-funded K-12 education continue to exist? At first blush, it might seem a radical question to even ask. But when public schools are failing in their essential purposes, we need to explore whether to cease funding them. From their inception, public schools had at least two essential purposes: to train students in those values essential to participating in society and, as the saying goes, teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic.
This Article will highlight the ways in which public schools are failing to achieve these two basic goals. First, public schools are failing academically. Scores on standardized tests continue to …
Rethinking Parental Rights: It’S Time To Move To Procedural Due Process, Michael Farris
Rethinking Parental Rights: It’S Time To Move To Procedural Due Process, Michael Farris
Liberty University Law Review
Should substantive due process be replaced? Justice Clarence Thomas and others have recently reignited the debate surrounding substantive due process, causing advocates of parental rights to feel uneasy. They are concerned about suggestions to reverse certain Supreme Court decisions relying on substantive due process—like Justice Thomas’s suggestion in his concurrence in Dobbs v. Jackson—because parental rights cases have traditionally relied on substantive due process. Given the uncertainty arising from Justice Thomas’s disparagement of substantive due process, no one should assume that the outcome of a parental rights case will follow the normal ideological divide on the Supreme Court. Accordingly, …

Homeschooling In The United States: A Seismic Parental Rights Victory, William A. Estrada
Liberty University Law Review
Homeschooling has surged in popularity. It has a proven record of success. Yet that begs the question: how did we get here? How did our nation go from prosecuting homeschool parents a few decades ago to considering home education a viable and mainstream educational option? This Article explores the reasons why and concludes that it is because of the history and tradition of parental rights that has been recognized and accepted in the United States. This Article explores the history of parental rights from ancient times to the founding of the United States. That rich history and tradition, particularly the …

How Cultural Intelligence Facilitates Employee Creativity: The Roles Of Intercultural Citizenship Behavior And Perceived Disharmony, Yang Yang, Qin Yang, Crystal Jiang
Management Department Faculty Journal Articles
Employee creativity is widely recognized as a pivotal factor for organizational innovation. Despite the known benefits of cultural intelligence (CQ) in enhancing task performance in intercultural environments, little research has examined the relationship between individual CQ and creativity. Drawing from the interactionist perspective, where creativity arises from the dynamic interaction between individuals and their environments, this research explores how individual CQ dimensions (metacognitive and motivational) enhance creativity through social interactions and cultural environments in multinational corporations (MNCs). Using a sample of 116 employees from three multinational companies, this study examines the relationship among individual CQ, intercultural citizenship behavior (intercultural OCB), …

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic has had devastating worldwide impact but most prominent was its effect on marginalised, underserved and equity-deserving populations. Social media arose as an important platform from which health organisations could rapidly disseminate information to equity-deserving populations about COVID-19 risks and events, provide instructions on how to mitigate those risks, motivate compliance with health directives, address false information, provide the opportunity for engagement and immediate feedback. The objective of this scoping review was to synthesise the academic and grey literature on equity-informed social media risk communication strategies developed during the pandemic. DESIGN: The review followed the Arksey and …
