An Application Of The Matching Law To Text Messaging, Brenna Anderson
An Application Of The Matching Law To Text Messaging, Brenna Anderson
Doctoral Dissertations - College of Arts and Sciences
The purpose of the current study was to assess the generality of the matching law extended to common human behavior, text messaging, in a gamified preparation. Random ratio schedule values were generated and distributed across two concurrently available alternatives, with differing reinforcer densities, in which points were delivered when response requirements were satisfied. Each participant experienced two combinations of reinforcer densities arranged across response alternatives in four experimental conditions, and each condition was replicated. Reinforcer assessments were conducted with all participants to confirm that points functioned as reinforcers. Response rate log ratio, programmed reinforcement rate log ratio, and obtained reinforcement …

Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for U(1)B−L gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the …

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries
The court held that a challenge under NRS 172.145(2) should be brought through a motion and not a pre-trial habeas corpus petition. Using methods of statutory interpretation, the court found that for issues involving a grand jury, a party should only use pre-trial habeas petitions to challenge insufficiency of the evidence to reach a grand jury indictment. Any other challenges require a motion. A challenge under NRS. 172.145(2), as in this case, claims that the prosecutor did not provide all exculpatory evidence to a grand jury as required. This does not challenge the sufficiency of the evidence, but instead makes …

Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) feature altered brain development, developmental delay and seizures, with seizures exacerbating developmental delay. Here we identify a cohort with biallelic variants in DENND5A, encoding a membrane trafficking protein, and develop animal models with phenotypes like the human syndrome. We demonstrate that DENND5A interacts with Pals1/MUPP1, components of the Crumbs apical polarity complex required for symmetrical division of neural progenitor cells. Human induced pluripotent stem cells lacking DENND5A fail to undergo symmetric cell division with an inherent propensity to differentiate into neurons. These phenotypes result from misalignment of the mitotic spindle in apical neural progenitors. Cells …

Although tourist-to-tourist interaction (TTI) has been identified as an essential element in tourist experiences, the effect of TTI quality on tourist loyalty, and the mechanism underlying this effect is scarcely discussed in the literature. Based on the self-determination theory, this study aims to examine whether and how TTI quality influences tourist loyalty, representing a significant means to achieve destination sustainability. More specifically, this study tested a moderated mediation model in which basic psychological needs satisfaction mediated the relationship between TTI quality and tourist loyalty, while sociability moderated the link between TTI quality and basic psychological needs satisfaction. A survey research …

Despite strong theoretical predictions based on disagreement, limited empirical evidence links short-selling restrictions to higher prices. We test this relationship using quasi-experimental methods based on rule 201, a threshold-based policy that restricts aggressive short selling when intraday returns cross −10%. When comparing stocks on either side of the threshold in the same hour of trading, we find that the restriction leads to 8% lower short-sale volume and 35 basis points higher daily returns. These price effects do not reverse after the restriction is lifted.

Rapid advancements of deep learning are accelerating adoption in a wide variety of applications, including safety-critical applications such as self-driving vehicles, drones, robots, and surveillance systems. These advancements include applying variations of sophisticated techniques that improve the performance of models. However, such models are not immune to adversarial manipulations, which can cause the system to misbehave and remain unnoticed by experts. The frequency of modifications to existing deep learning models necessitates thorough analysis to determine the impact on models’ robustness. In this work, we present an experimental evaluation of the effects of model modifications on deep learning model robustness using …

Since there are many sources of unconscious information in our minds, there is a possibility that multiple channels of unconscious information can affect a response at the same time. However, this question has been largely ignored by researchers. In the present study, we presented two opposite pointing arrows as the masked primes followed by a target arrow. The results suggested that the two directions in which the two prime arrows are pointing influenced the response to the target simultaneously and additively, that is, the overall priming effect caused by the two opposite pointing prime arrows was equal to the net …

Review Of The Interlinked Environmental, Economic, And Social Realms Of Sustainability, Tony Kealy
Books/Book chapters
Sustainable development (sustainability) objectives are achieved when environmental, economic, and social/human aspects are respectfully considered in organisational public and private decision-making. This study reviews and critiques these three main components as attempts are made to achieve sustainable business development. The results allow decision-makers to identify issues that need to be considered when making decisions regarding environmental, economic, and human resources. A literature review methodology is utilized. The findings highlighted flaws in all three main sustainability components. Renewable energy generators are benefiting the environmental component of sustainability, but at a slower pace than anticipated. Global indicators of environmental degradation are on …
Creating A Wholistic Manufacturing Score To Highlight The Effects Of Hidden Inefficiencies In Automated Manufacturing Caused By Soft Dedication And Preventative Maintenance Failures, Oded Tal
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The semiconductor industry is one of the most advanced manufacturing sectors, operating at an unparalleled scale and complexity. A new manufacturing facility costs between $500 million and $15 billion, and the industry's investment in automation is unmatched. However, the intricate and cyclical nature of semiconductor manufacturing creates very complex manufacturing facilities where the boundaries between planning and real-time operations often blur.
For the industry to keep improving, there is a need to create a new method that allows comparison among different manufacturing environments to uncover hidden losses that may be obscured by automation.
To better understand these hidden losses, the …

The Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Family Reentry Programs And The Public Policies Governing Those Programs For African American Female Ex-Offenders, Yulonda Rhodes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore how African American female ex-offenders perceive the effectiveness of family reentry programs and the policies governing those programs. By providing additional information particular to African American female ex-offenders, this study has the potential to broaden the scope and depth of existing studies and enhance public policies governing family reentry programs. The theoretical framework concentrated on the four variables of Hirschi’s social control theory: attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief. The primary research question explored how African American female ex-offenders perceived the effectiveness of family reentry programs. Data were collected through in-depth …

Sustainable intensification schemes such as integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) are a proposed strategy to close yield gaps, increase soil fertility, and achieve food security in sub-Saharan Africa. Biogeochemical models such as DayCent can assess their potential at larger scales, but these models need to be calibrated to new environments and rigorously tested for accuracy. Here, we present a Bayesian calibration of DayCent, using data from four long-term field experiments in Kenya in a leave-one-site-out cross-validation approach. The experimental treatments consisted of the addition of low- to high-quality organic resources, with and without mineral nitrogen fertilizer. We assessed the potential …

The tendency for our minds to wander is a pervasive and disruptive influence on continued task performance. Models of sustained attention have implicated mind wandering, moments when attention has turned inwards toward task-unrelated thought, in characteristic patterns of worsening performance with greater time-on-task, known as the vigilance decrement. Despite their theoretical connection, associations between mind wandering and the vigilance decrement have not been investigated systematically. Across two studies (N = 730), we evaluated covariance between within-task change in rates of probe-caught mind wandering and patterns of worsening behavioral task performance that characterize the vigilance decrement. Bivariate growth curve models characterized …
