Hpv Prevalence In A College-Aged Sample Group And Its Link To Sexual Behaviors And Attitudes, Emily E. Bishop, Rahjai Thomas, Katelyn Ambrose, Gabriela Lewczyk, Paul E. Richardson

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

HPV, or Human Papilloma Virus, is the most common Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI). It is the number one STI in men and women. There are over 460 subtypes; a majority of the subtypes are able to be cleared by the human immune system within 3 years after initial infection. However fifteen of these subtypes have been classified as ‘high-risk’ for carcinoma development, accounting for almost 100% of cervical cancers. This STI has an age prevalence starting at 19 for oral and genital infections. The overall goal of this research is to provide students with an equally represented and unbiased database …

The Tigertriever is a novel, radially adjustable stentriever that addresses limitations in traditional mechanical thrombectomy devices by providing enhanced user control over clot integration. This provides the ability to adapt to patient-specific factors such as varying vessel sizes and clot compositions and may be particularly crucial for ensuring efficacy and safety in distal locations. This consensus paper synthesizes the clinical techniques from a consortium of experienced international operators. It outlines the current data on the Tigertriever, discusses the new operator-controlled capabilities, and provides a recommended approach for both proximal and distal mechanical thrombectomy, emphasizing the "FLEX" approach (Fast Controlled Expansion …

Peritoneal Baclofen Pump Migration: A Rare Complication Of Subfascial Placement Illustrative Cases, Daniel J Curry, Nisha Gadgil

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

BACKGROUND: The intrathecal baclofen pump is an effective treatment option for patients with severe spasticity. In children, subfascial pump placement is often preferred given concerns for infection and wound healing. However, this approach is not without risk, and rare complications, such as peritoneal pump migration, can occur.

OBSERVATIONS: The authors describe three pediatric cases of peritoneal pump migration at their institution over the past 14 years (3/545, 0.5%). All three patients had low body weight (below the 39th percentile), and two had scoliosis requiring surgery. All pumps had been placed using the subfascial technique. The first case occurred 6 months …

Methods For Efficient Computation Of Neutron Multiplicity Distributions And Snm Sample Characterization, Jawad Ribhi Moussa Sep 2024

Methods For Efficient Computation Of Neutron Multiplicity Distributions And Snm Sample Characterization, Jawad Ribhi Moussa

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

This dissertation advances neutron multiplicity counting (NMC) by developing a hierarchy of computational methods that combine deterministic and stochastic techniques with modern machine learning for improved special nuclear material (SNM) characterization. A system state-updating Monte Carlo method is introduced in addition to a dynamic point kinetic model based on a backward Master equation (BME) formulation. These models, along with newly developed distribution reconstruction methods, enable more efficient computation of neutron count distributions in a fixed detector time-gate. NMC limitations associated with finite-size and neutron phase effects are also addressed by extending the BME model to account for time-gated neutron count …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The contribution of placental immune responses to congenital Zika virus (ZIKV) syndrome remains poorly understood. Here, we leveraged a mouse model of ZIKV infection to identify mechanisms of innate immune restriction exclusively in the fetal compartment of the placenta. ZIKV principally infected mononuclear trophoblasts in the junctional zone, which was limited by mitochondrial antiviral-signaling protein (MAVS) and type I interferon (IFN) signaling mechanisms. Single nuclear RNA sequencing revealed MAVS-dependent expression of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs) in spongiotrophoblasts but not in other placental cells that use alternate pathways to induce ISGs. ZIKV infection of Ifnar1-/- or Mavs-/- placentas was associated with greater …

Feasibility And Desirability Of A Realist Cmoc Database: Lessons Learned, Dimitri Renmans, Gill Westhorp, Brad Astbury, Zakaria Belrhiti, Rebecca Hardwick, Frans Leeuw, Ian Maidment, Emma Williams

Peninsula Medical School

Central to realist evaluation is its focus on underlying generative mechanisms that cause outcomes in particular contexts, often presented as context–mechanism–outcome configurations. The first author brought together 22 realist evaluation experts in a Delphi technique-inspired exercise to explore the potential of creating a database from context–mechanism–outcome configurations identified in the empirical literature, to enhance learning about what context–mechanism–outcome configurations are and to further the cumulation of knowledge. The exercise, and the comments it evoked, showed why developing such a database is not straightforward and the views on its desirability and utility are mixed. The main reasons are the lack of …

Scintruler: Guiding The Integration Of Multiple Single-Cell Rna-Seq Datasets With A Novel Statistical Metric, Yue Lyu, Steven H Lin, Hao Wu, Ziyi Li

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Motivation: The growing number of single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) studies highlights the potential benefits of integrating multiple datasets, such as augmenting sample sizes and enhancing analytical robustness. Inherent diversity and batch discrepancies within samples or across studies continue to pose significant challenges for computational analyses. Questions persist in practice, lacking definitive answers: Should we use a specific integration method or opt for simply merging the datasets during joint analysis? Among all the existing data integration methods, which one is more suitable in specific scenarios?

Result: To fill the gap, we introduce SCIntRuler, a novel statistical metric for guiding the integration of …

Structural And Geomorphological Constraints On The Activity Of The Sparta Fault (Greece), Çal Çağatay, Sarah Boulton, Zoe Mildon

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The ancient city of Sparti (Greece) suffered extensive damage from an estimated Mw 7.2 earthquake in 464 BCE, resulting in c. 20 000 fatalities, but questions remain about the short-(c. 104 years) and long-term (105–106 years) activity of this important structure. This paper presents new structural data and fluvial geomorphological analysis from the Sparta Fault and, in particular, considers the less well-known northern fault segment. A new topographic profile on the well-developed post-glacial fault scarp from the northern strand indicates a 7.53 m offset over the last c. 15 ka, suggesting a throw-rate of c. …

A Close Look At Kenneth Kaunda’S Life: Interviews With Those Who Knew Him Personally, Victoria Phiri Chitungu

Zambia Social Science Journal

Victoria Phiri Chitungu and her team conducted a remarkable series of interviews with people personally close to Kenneth Kaunda, along with Kaunda himself, and together these offer a different, more personal perspective on Kaunda’s life. The articles in this special issue primarily focus on Kaunda as a public and political figure and Kaunda as a real-life human being can sometimes disappear in this perspective. He was a symbol for many people, alternately revered and reviled. Chitungu’s interviews are different. Here, we glimpse into Kaunda’s personal life: the food he ate, the songs he sang, how he slept, and his family …

The relative importance of genetic drift and local adaptation in facilitating speciation remains unclear. This is particularly true for seabirds, which can disperse over large geographic distances, providing opportunities for intermittent gene flow among distant colonies that span the temperature and salinity gradients of the oceans. Here, we delve into the genomic basis of adaptation and speciation of banded penguins, Galápagos (Spheniscus mendiculus), Humboldt (Spheniscus humboldti), Magellanic (Spheniscus magellanicus), and African penguins (Spheniscus demersus), by analyzing 114 genomes from the main 16 breeding colonies. We aim to identify the molecular mechanism and genomic adaptive traits that have facilitated their diversifications. …
