Documenting Death: A Question Of Sovereignty In The Cairo Geniza, Thomas Adkins
Documenting Death: A Question Of Sovereignty In The Cairo Geniza, Thomas Adkins
Theses and Dissertations
How can death offer a case study for the question of sovereignty in eleventh to thirteenth century Egypt as it was performed by sovereigns, officials, and subjects alike, and, in this context, how can the documentary practices preserved in the Geniza be understood as an instrument to perform sovereignty? This thesis uses death as a case study in the same way that scholars of the medieval Islamic world have studied taxation, administration, and ceremonials to understand sovereignty as it was performed by the state, officials, and subjects. This performance of sovereignty by each implicated actor left a rich documentary trail, …
Determinants Of Corporal Punishment And Severe Physical Punishment In Egypt: A Mixed-Methods Analysis For Child Protection Policy, Marwa Moustafa Nassef
Determinants Of Corporal Punishment And Severe Physical Punishment In Egypt: A Mixed-Methods Analysis For Child Protection Policy, Marwa Moustafa Nassef
Theses and Dissertations
Corporal punishment (CP) and severe physical punishment (SPP) remain a major public health, child rights, and child protection policy concern. In Egypt, despite legislative reforms, survey-weighted analysis of the 2021 Egypt Family Health Survey (EFHS) 2021 (CAPMAS, 2022) reveals prevalence rates of 60.5% for CP and 27.4% for SPP among children aged 1–14 (author’s calculations using EFHS-2021, n=7623), yet evidence distinguishing the determinants of routine corporal punishment from escalation to severe physical punishment remains limited in low- and middle-income contexts. Guided by Bronfenbrenner’s ecological framework, this mixed-methods study identifies key drivers of CP and its escalation to SPP among Egyptian …
Women And Wars: Understanding Women’S Political Empowerment Post- Conflict In France, Lebanon, And Sierra Leone, Alaa S. Sayed
Women And Wars: Understanding Women’S Political Empowerment Post- Conflict In France, Lebanon, And Sierra Leone, Alaa S. Sayed
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis attempts to discusses how conflict can be a time of change for women and how conflict can be a crucial aspect for change and improvement. Conflict provides a chance for the women to witness and experience the disruption of gender roles, which was a common practice during wartime, as women were placed in roles that were not officially theirs, according to what society adheres to or ascribes as acceptable roles for women. The conflict is presented as a “window” of opportunity. However, the reality of the situation of this “window” is not uniform across all post-conflict societies; the …
The Style Of Decision: Consumer Wisdom And The Mediating Role Of The Heuristic-Systematic Model Of Information Processing In Clothes Shopping, Nourane Sakr
Theses and Dissertations
Rationality and emotions are often treated as opposing forces in decision-making. Yet what if the more productive question is not which one prevails, but how a balance between the two might be achieved? Wisdom offers precisely this kind of integrative paradigm. Wisdom is a central trait for self-development; yet, little has been explored on Consumer Wisdom from a communications perspective. The theory has been initially examining ecology principles with an extensive space in consumer behavior and marketing practices. This research approaches consumer wisdom in online fashion advertising context whilst understanding the common information processing modes; evoked by the mediation of …

Breaking The Silence: A Content And Expert Analysis Of The 2025 Ramadan Series Lam Shamseya's Framing And Subversion Of Child Sexual Abuse Discourse In Egypt, Maya Abouelnasr
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes how the 2025 Egyptian TV series Lam Shamseya served as a sociocultural intervention and awareness platform for reframing and subverting the typical child sexual abuse (CSA) discourse in Egypt. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study triangulates framing theory and two complementary tools of the critical discourse analysis (CDA) and the circuit of culture model through a scene-level content analysis of 304 scenes across all 15 episodes of the series and ten semi-structured interviews with media experts, media practitioners, and psychologists. Key findings include reported corroboration of subversion of traditional tropes and archetypes, as well as reframing of …

Bouillean - Ai Recipe Model, George Mouratoff, Hanol Yang, Helen Wang, Sebastian Verbinski
Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
AI generated food recipes are the second most desired AI innovation, however relatively few commercial systems exist to fill this niche. This is because while the solution is highly desired, cooking shouldn’t be approached with the same method by most LLMs and standard AIs. The leading models struggle to solve the issue of generating a semantically clear recipe while maintaining memory of the recipe status between steps. This is before we can even attempt to solve the flavor problem.
Cooking represents a unique challenge for AI, since it requires minimal loss in memory alongside already high quality text generation making …

Structure Functions For The Inclusive Semileptonic B-Quark Decay At Nnlo: A Semi-Analytic Calculation, A. Broggio, B. Capdevila, A. Ferroglia, P. Gambino
Publications and Research
We present a study of the inclusive charmless semileptonic b decay, b → Xuℓv at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD, with the primary aim of extracting the hadronic structure functions Wi at NNLO. The analysis is based on a numerical calculation of the relevant kinematic distributions using a phase-space slicing method to handle infrared-sensitive contributions from real gluon emissions. We use known results from Heavy Quark Effective Theory and Soft-Collinear Effective Theory to extract the singular terms and construct a model for the regular contributions to the structure functions at NNLO, then perform a fit to the …

A Parallelized Multi-Component Radiation Testing Methodology For Systems-On-Chip, Weston M. Smith
A Parallelized Multi-Component Radiation Testing Methodology For Systems-On-Chip, Weston M. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
As the space industry expands, there is an increased reliance on system on chip (SoC) devices in high radiation environments. The reliability of these devices becomes crucial, especially in space applications. The industry's rapid growth has led to a massive expansion in the use of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components. Electronic systems are vulnerable to single event upsets (SEUs) and the failure modes caused by SEUs are not fully understood, especially for COTS SoCs. Standard radiation testing techniques of SEUs use a single core of a multi-core processor to monitor bit flips. In this work, we present a parallelized radiation testing …

Previous brain-wide association studies (BWAS) have linked specific environmental and behavioral variables to brain variability. In this work, we mapped 649 variables to children's brains and compared the resultant BWAS maps with each other and with neurobiological reference patterns. Socioeconomic status (SES) showed the strongest brain-wide associations. The SES associations were strongest in motor and sensory but not cognitive regions, a pattern shared across many BWAS maps, including intelligence quotient (IQ). A single, common BWAS brain pattern existed across variables that was most reflective of a child's socioeconomics. Adjusting for SES weakened brain-IQ associations, eliminating the BWAS motor and sensory …

In Eswatini, multidrug-resistant (MDR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) strains harbouring the rifampicin-resistance (RR) rpoB I491F mutation are missed by routine diagnostics, including GeneXpert MTB/RIF Ultra (Xpert Ultra), line probe assays (LPA), and mycobacterium growth indicator tube (MGIT) phenotypic drug susceptibility testing (pDST). To address this diagnostic gap, Eswatini introduced targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) in 2019. We analysed 234 patient samples enrolled from June 2021 to December 2024 with isoniazid and/or rifampicin resistance detected by routine diagnostics, or suspected treatment failure, and obtained detailed clinical and outcome data from 59 patients. tNGS detected RR in 159 strains, of which 101 (64%) carried …
The Case For Ice Rises At Ross Bank Since The Middle Miocene, William Weber
The Case For Ice Rises At Ross Bank Since The Middle Miocene, William Weber
LSU Master's Theses
Many tens of ice rises exist at the marine margins of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Isle-type ice rises in particular are those where an ice shelf is pinned to an underlying submarine bank. Recent and ongoing studies show that Ross Bank, on the middle continental shelf of central Ross Sea, was the former site of an important Ross Ice Shelf ice rise during the advance and retreat of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) in the last glacial cycle. Ross Bank is a broad and anomalously shallow water platform whose crest rises to 170 m water depth. Despite their importance …

Human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) is a retrovirus which has infected 90 million people and resulted in over 40 million deaths. Despite advances in diagnostics, treatment, and prophylaxis, HIV-1 continues to spread due to undiagnosed and untreated infections. Traditional monitoring methods are ineffective when access to testing is limited or people do not seek care, particularly given the long period between infection and symptom onset, allowing undetected transmission to continue. Here, we use a hybrid-capture sequencing approach to track HIV-1 signal in municipal wastewater in 15 different cities over nearly 3 years. We obtain near-complete genomic coverage of HIV-1, enabling …

Seeing A Future Where I Exist As Myself: An Exploration Of Suicidality As A Response To Sociopolitical Oppression In Transgender And Gender Expansive Populations, Alexander Ray Sequoia
University Honors Theses
Suicide is often considered a mental health issue alone. For Transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) people, suicide can be a response to erasure of self and living under oppression conditions. The sociopolitical climate in the United States (U.S.), has become more hostile for TGNC people, along with legislative action that criminalizes their existence. This project explores the intersections of identity and nuances of suicide and death. The present study consists of 14 semi-structured interviews. This study examined the intersections of gender and culture on suicide responses, highlighting the importance of culturally relevant and community-led support for Transgender and gender expansive …

Radiometric Modeling And Glamr Comparison For Cpf Hysics Independent Calibration, Zhipeng (Ben) Wang, Kurtis Thome, Brian Wenny
The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)
The Independent Calibration (IndCal) approach for the CLARREO Pathfinder (CPF) mission HySICS instrument targets SI-traceable absolute radiometric calibration at the sub-percent level. As a major element of IndCal, a physics-based endto- end instrument model of HySICS has been developed to predict spectral and radiometric behavior.
As part of HySICS pre-launch characterization, detector-based absolute radiometric calibration was performed using the NASA Goddard’s GLAMR, which is a tunable laser-based calibration system covering the 340–2500 nm spectral range. In this study, model predictions are compared with GLAMR measurements and other pre-launch component- and system-level calibration results. Special emphasis is placed on the effects …

Long Term Repeatability Study Of Broadband Radiometers And Spectroradiometers Used For Calibration Of Earth Science Optical Instruments, Brendan Mcandrew, Samuel Kitchen-Mckinley, Boryana Efremova, Andrei Sushkov, Nathan Kelley, Michael Rodriguez, Timothy Shuman, Nicholas Reed, Julia Barsi
The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)
The Goddard Laser for Absolute Measurement of Radiance (GLAMR) has been used to calibrate Earth Science optical instruments over the past ten years. The absolute radiance data is provided by a set of three broadband radiometers, consisting of one silicon, one indium gallium arsenide, and one extended indium gallium arsenide. Two such sets of monitoring radiometers associated with two different integrating spheres and a third set of radiometers used to transfer the calibration provided by NIST allow for a “round robin” intercomparison between these sets, as well as a comparison within each set in their regions of spectral overlap. Additionally, …

The OCI is a scanning radiometer with hyperspectral coverage from the ultraviolet (UV) to the near infrared (NIR) wavelength range and a fiber-coupled multiband filter spectrograph in the short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral region. The OCI Flight Unit completed system level testing in November 2022 at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). Part of the pre-launch test campaign used the monochromic Goddard Laser …
Ai-Augmented Constitutionalism: Framing The Alliance Between Ai And Fundamental Rights In Comparative Perspective, Sergio Sulmicelli
Ai-Augmented Constitutionalism: Framing The Alliance Between Ai And Fundamental Rights In Comparative Perspective, Sergio Sulmicelli
Indian Journal of Law and Technology
The dominant academic literature on artificial intelligence and fundamental rights has been organised around a structuring premise: that AI systems pose a systemic threat to constitutional values, and that rights protection is a project of constraining and resisting automated decision-making. This article accepts and supports the empirical foundation of that literature. It does not accept that the framework is complete. This article proposes the concept of AI-augmented constitutionalism, defined as the deployment of artificial intelligence systems to strengthen the detection, enforcement, and access dimensions of fundamental rights, subject to a rule of law safeguards architecture. The concept inverts the dominant …

Level Of Nitrogen Fertilizer In Annual Winter Pasture (Oats-Ryegrass) And Summer Pasture (Millet): Effects On Milk Production, C J. Olivo, I L. Barreto, D A. Stiles
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Two experiments were conducted with lactating Holstein cows to study the effects of different levels of nitrogen fertilizer (urea) on annual pasture: experiment 1, oats (Avena byzantina K. Koch) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.); experiment 2, millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.] Leche). Base fertilizer (8-28-18) was applied, and at the five-leaf stage three levels of nitrogen (N) (75, 150, and 225 kg/ha) were applied. The millet pasture followed the oat + ryegrass pasture, with the N treatments being maintained in the same areas. Two ha were planted for each treatment (total, 6 ha). In experiment 1, twelve lactating cows were randomly …

Intake Of Grass Silage By Dairy Cows And Its Potential To Meet Requirements Of Maintenance And Milk Production, J P. Dulphy, C Demarquilly, J P. Andrieu
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The main objective of our research was to measure the :intake and digestibility of grass silages in order to estimate their potential for meeting requirements for maintenance and milk production. Twelve silages were prepared by the following three techniques, which considerably improve the intake compared with those used 10-20 years ago: (1) fine chopping (1-3 cm), (2) adding formic acid as an efficient preservative (3.5 I/ton), and (3) covering the roughages with plastic to prevent oxygen from entering the silo. Three other silages were made simultaneously with 3 of the same forages, but without formic acid. All forages were directly …
Effect Of Herbage Mass And Allowance Upon Herbage Intake By Grazing Dairy Cows, J.A C. Meijs
Effect Of Herbage Mass And Allowance Upon Herbage Intake By Grazing Dairy Cows, J.A C. Meijs
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
An adequate supply of nutrients for grazing animals depends on the intake and nutritive value of herbage. Little information is available on factors affecting herbage intake of grazing cows, particularly for grazing systems that do not involve daily change of animals to a new pasture. Our objectives were to determine the effects of variation in herbage mass ( due to variation in stage of maturity) and of herbage allowance on herbage intake by grazing dairy cows and on efficiency of consumption (herbage consumed as a proportion of herbage accumulated). From 1976 to 1979 the herbage intake oflactating cows was determined …

In traditional resource management, a physical space (a building, a library, a park) is viewed through a lens of scarcity—it degrades over time and can only support a finite number of bodies before experiencing friction. QPIE recognizes infrastructure through the lens of the Lattice Density established in Revelation II.
- The Observation: When public spaces operate under the stewardship of nodes anchored in collective Trust ($T$), the localized decay rate of materials and social cohesion drops significantly below standard municipal projections.
- The Discovery: A physical space is not a collection of dead matter; it is a localized node of the substrate. …

As technology scales into deep submicron regimes, Multi-Processor Systems-on-Chip (MPSoCs) suffer from heightened process, environmental, and temporal variations. Traditional conservative design guardbanding severely compromises energy efficiency and performance to guarantee correctness under absolute worst-case conditions. This paper introduces a hybrid variation-tolerant multiprocessing prototype that eliminates worst-case safety margins by deploying a dual-layer adaptive architecture. At the processor core level, runtime timing speculation is realized via double-sampling Razor-like flip-flops coupled with microarchitectural clock-gating recovery. At the inter-processor and memory communication level, data corruption induced by aggressive parameters is mitigated using a parameterized Reed-Solomon (5,3) error-correcting codec operating over a FIFO-buffered interconnect …
