A cell wall is required to control cell shape and size to maintain growth and division. However, some bacterial species maintain their morphology and size without a cell wall, calling into question the importance of the cell wall to maintain shape and size. It has been very difficult to examine the dispensability of cell wall synthesis in rod-shaped bacteria such as Escherichia coli for maintenance of their shape and size because they lyse without cell walls under normal culture conditions. Here, we show that wall-less E. coli L-form cells, which have a heterogeneous cell morphology, can be converted to a …
Unified Worldline Treatment Of Yukawa And Axial Couplings, James Edwards
Unified Worldline Treatment Of Yukawa And Axial Couplings, James Edwards
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
We provide a worldline representation of the one-loop effective action for a Dirac particle coupled to external scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axialvector fields. Extending previous work by two of the authors on the pure vector-axialvector case to all four couplings, it allows one to treat the real and the imaginary parts of the effective action in a unified manner, at the price of having a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Unlike existing worldline representations, our new worldline action contains terms with an odd number of Grassmann fields, leading to ordering problems that in the worldline formalism are usually encountered only in curved space. …

Neuro-symbolic models leverage the combined strengths of both symbolic AI and Deep Neural networks (DNNs), namely the interpretability of symbolic AI and the representation power of DNNs. These models are gaining significant attention, particularly in high-stakes domains where domain knowledge and interpretability play a key role. In this dissertation, we propose to develop neuro-symbolic AI based techniques to improve the scalability, verifiability, and equitability of these models. Specifically, we will focus on a high-stakes domain where the aforementioned properties are crucial, namely, AI-enabled education. In particular, Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) can make high-quality education available for a large and diverse …
Network Differentiation And Identification Of Singletons In Gaussian Networks Under The Bayesian Framework, James Olusegun Adefisoye
Network Differentiation And Identification Of Singletons In Gaussian Networks Under The Bayesian Framework, James Olusegun Adefisoye
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation explores Bayesian approaches for network analysis in the context of epigenetic modifications, specifically focusing on Deoxyribonucleic acid methylation (DNA-m) at cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites. DNA-m is a key epigenetic modification associated with diseases and infections. Recent research suggests that analyzing joint activities across multiple CpG sites could provide more powerful insights, which can be achieved using network-based approaches, such as Gaussian networks. The first project introduces a Bayesian variable selection method for detecting singletons and reconstructing networks that incorporate singleton status. Singletons, or isolated nodes, can lead to false connections and biased interpretations. The proposed method effectively detects singletons, …

Louise Farrenc’s life and work embody the challenges female musicians encountered in the nineteenth century, and the progress they made beyond societal norms and gender-based restrictions. Thanks to her talent, perseverance, teaching position at the Paris Conservatory, and the support of her husband (who encouraged her and edited most of her music), she helped to shape the established societal mindset and impacted history, smoothing the road for future generations of female musicians. By examining Farrenc’s compositions we can gain insight into the contribution of a female musician who successfully established herself as an admired composer as well as a respected …

The Average Number Of Goldbach Representations And Zero-Free Regions Of The Riemann Zeta Function, Keith Billington, Maddie Cheng, Jordan Schettler, Ade Irma Suriajaya
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In this paper, we prove an unconditional form of Fujii's formula for the average number of Goldbach representations and show that the error in this formula is determined by a general zero-free region of the Riemann zeta function, and vice versa. In particular, we describe the error in the unconditional formula in terms of the remainder in the Prime Number Theorem which connects the error to zero-free regions of the Riemann zeta function.
Understanding Mechanisms For Coastal Marsh Sustainability In A Changing Climate, Ashley R. Booth
Understanding Mechanisms For Coastal Marsh Sustainability In A Changing Climate, Ashley R. Booth
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In the Chenier Plain of Louisiana and Texas, coastal marshes are subject to high rates of relative sea level rise (RSLR), restricted sedimentation, and declining elevation attributed to subsidence and decades of intensive management. These marshes were created via mineral sedimentation but now largely accrete via organic matter accumulation. This organic matter accumulation (OMA) – or the balance between plant productivity and decomposition – is essential for maintaining elevation and thus long-term sustainability. However, management for elevation is complicated by a poor understanding of how abiotic factors like flooding and salinity impact processes driving OMA and elevation. To better understand …

Integrative data from plastid and nuclear loci are increasingly utilized to resolve species boundaries and phylogenetic relationships within major angiosperm clades. Debregeasia (Urticaceae), an economically important genus, presents challenges in species delimitation due to its overlapping morphological traits and unstable taxonomic assignments. Here, we analyzed 14 morphological traits and generated 12 data matrices from the plastomes and nrDNA using genome skimming from the nine recognized morphospecies to clarify species boundaries and assess barcode performance in Debregeasia. We also used a universal set of 353 nuclear genes to explore reticulate evolution and biogeographic history of Debregeasia. Plastomes of Debregeasia …

Advising For A New Generation, Rachel Smith
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
In today’s educational marketplace, where students are viewed as consumers, colleges and universities compete for undergraduate business by providing the best educational experience possible. This means developing and expanding student services, such as academic advising, in order to improve retention rates of the undergraduate population. Enhancing academic advising services by utilizing a combination of professional and faculty advising can make dramatic improvements in student retention. It is important for colleges and universities to dedicate resources to create a cohesive advising system that prevents misinformation, and increases degree completion, as well as student satisfaction.

Building A Better Future For Christian Higher Education, Maria Ll Lam
Journal of the North American Management Society
This paper is an exploratory study concerning the perceptions of 16 diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) officers at nine Protestant evangelical Christian universities and six Catholic universities. Among these 16 DEI officers, 15 are people of color. 13 possess Ph.D. degrees and hold the highest administrative positions at their institutions. They are often required to address justice issues in their diversity initiatives if they don’t want to reproduce systematic institutional injustices in historically white-dominated Christian universities. They are working across multiple boundaries (i.e., boundary spanners) for institutional-level diversity changes. They all voice motivations to make institutional changes and 11 DEI …

Religious Accommodations For Educators: A Reexamination Of Undue Burden In The Public School Classroom, Maggie L. Paino, Suzanne Eckes
ConLawNOW
This Essay addresses the question of how public schools should address existing tensions between employee religious rights and student identity and expression when a teacher refuses to use a student’s chosen name and pronouns. Guiding this issue and the practice for public school officials to follow is a 2024 decision of a federal district court in Kluge v. Brownsburg Community School District, and guidance published by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. While the court in Kluge recognized the substantial increased costs to the school of granting the religious accommodation when students are involved, the EEOC affirmed the need to …

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics
Modeling of some rarely occurring environmental events, obtaining and analyzing accurate predictions is quite important in determining the nature of such events and taking measures accordingly. Modeling these rarely occurring environmental events with the statistical distributions in the literature may cause some problems. For this reason, different statistical distributions are needed for modeling this type of rare data. In this paper, a new three-parameter exponentiated Benini distribution based on the exponential family is proposed as a new lifetime distribution. It is called the three-parameter exponentiated Benini distribution. Although new distributions are derived by different methods in the literature, there is …

Automated Fake News Detection System, Saja A. Al-Obaidi, Tuba Çağlıkantar
Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics
Online news has been the majority of people’s information source in recent decades. However, a lot of the information that is accessible online is fake and sometimes even designed to mislead. It might be difficult for individuals to distinguish between certain false newspaper items and the real ones since they are so similar. Deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) models, among other automated false news detection (FND) techniques, are quickly becoming essential. A comparative study was conducted to analyze the performance of five prominent deep learning models across four distinct datasets, namely ISOT, FakeNewsNet, Dataset1, and Dataset2. Results indicated …
Social Movements And The Contemporary Capitalist Nation State: Insights From Karatani KôJin And The "Sunflower Movement", Chen Shiyu
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Karatani Kôjin is one of the most important New Left critics active today. Several of his key concepts, such as “beyond capital-nation-state” and “singularity,” have not only sparked considerable theoretical discussion in the academe, but have sometimes become guiding principles of social movements both in Japan and abroad. Over the past fifteen years, his has been a key standpoint in discussions of the nation state in political philosophy. Taiwan’s massive “Sunflower Movement” in March of 2014, which to some extent related to Karatani, can be interpreted as the re-problematization of the concept of “East Asia” and subjectivity under postmodernity. This …
Negotiating Tolerance: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing And Researching Religion In China, Naomi Thurston
Negotiating Tolerance: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing And Researching Religion In China, Naomi Thurston
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Just as G. E. Lessing criticized what he saw as the narrow mindedness of his contemporaries by creating characters that exemplified a morally enlightened rationalism, religious studies scholars in contemporary China have helped instruct and reshape uninformed or generalizing attitudes towards religion in Chinese society. Reflecting on Lessing’s literary case for religious tolerance, the present article discusses different understandings of the nature and significance of religion in the field of so-called “Sino-Christian studies” (汉语基督教研究 Hanyu Jidujiao yanjiu). It demonstrates how religious and “theological tolerance” are variously understood depending on the stances, approaches, and constructions of meaning of individual scholars, influenced, …

Ethics And The Evolving Deployments Of Disciplinary Practices: A Foucauldian Analysis Of The Glamorization Of Bodies, Gerald Pio M. Franco
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
The paper discusses how individuals are constituted by disciplinary practices as presented in Michel Foucault’s two major works: Discipline and Punish and The History of Sexuality, Volume 1: An Introduction. The workings of power-knowledge gave rise to the penal apparatus and deployments of sexuality, which affected entire populations. But even as these disciplinary practices evolve and become seemingly more humane and liberating, they continue to produce docile and normalized subjects. One particular example of this process, discussed here in detail, is the transition from the figure of the hysterical woman to the modern glamorous (beautiful) woman. Such a transition extends …

Emancipatory Faith: Reflection On Alain Badiou And The Christians For National Liberation, Regletto Aldrich D. Imbong, Jerry D. Imbong
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Although Badiouian political thought maintains an obvious distance from theology, theisms, and all forms of transcendental conceptualizations of human liberation, it does allow the most universal form of democratic mass participation, including by Christian believers. This crossover, far from being a domination of either politics or religion, is possible because of their common affirmation of and fidelity to an Event. This paper aims to show the crossover between the radical politics of Alain Badiou and the revolutionary potential of the Christian religion proposed by a revolutionary organization. It further clarifies that radical politics, which seemingly veers towards atheism, and religion …
Are Secular Politics Possible?, Gregory C. Melleuish, Susanna G. Rizzo
Are Secular Politics Possible?, Gregory C. Melleuish, Susanna G. Rizzo
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Contemporary political analysis makes a distinction between politics that are secular in nature and politics that are religiously based. This article questions whether there is such a thing as secular politics. Firstly, it examines the roots of the secular/religious dichotomy in Western thought and concludes that it is the creation of particular intellectual developments in the West. And then it argues that modern politics is best viewed in terms of a number of “sacred projects” that are generated out of the supposedly secular nature of the modern West. There can be no real politics without such projects, only administration. Even …
Paul Ricoeur's Anthropology Of Forgiveness, Guillermo R. Dionisio
Paul Ricoeur's Anthropology Of Forgiveness, Guillermo R. Dionisio
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
In his philosophical anthropology Paul Ricoeur sees man’s innate goodness, despite his propensity for evil, ramifying into many capacities, among them, forgiveness. The capacity to forgive, for Ricoeur, lies between the paralysis of the power to act due to human fault, and the possible lifting of this incapacity through the separation of the offending agent from his or her evil deeds. But if forgiveness obtains in isolating offenders from their evil deeds, their self-understanding, sense of responsibility, and identity might become distorted and inaccurate, and would make us question whether forgiveness should be horizontal, that is, conditional; or vertical, that …
The Practice Of Hermeneutics: The Legal Text And Beyond, George H. Taylor
The Practice Of Hermeneutics: The Legal Text And Beyond, George H. Taylor
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This article attempts to show the continuing practical relevance of hermeneutics through the example of legal interpretation. The article begins with the very concrete nature of legal hermeneutics that forms everyday legal practice—the interrelation of meaning and application— and expands at a more theoretical to show how legal hermeneutics, and hermeneutics more generally, offers what Ricoeur calls an interpretive “choice in favor of meaning.” The choice in favor of meaning underscores the restorative character of hermeneutics that legal hermeneutics can epitomize. The article concludes with some of the challenges facing contemporary legal hermeneutics.
