Adam And The Names, Saqib Hussain Nov 2024

Adam And The Names, Saqib Hussain

Theological Studies Faculty Works

This paper examines the naming episode in the Quran's Adam story, in which God teaches Adam “the names, all of them”, to counter the angels' objection to the creation of the human creature on the basis that he will “spread corruption … and will shed blood”. I try to show that the traditional understanding of this narrative in Western scholarship, which connects it ultimately to the Genesis 2 episode in which Adam names all the creatures of the land and sky, fails to do justice to a close reading of the quranic text itself. Instead, I argue for an alternative …

How To Discipline Financial Markets: Reputation Is Not Enough, Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, Marco Casari Nov 2024

How To Discipline Financial Markets: Reputation Is Not Enough, Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, Marco Casari

ESI Working Papers

Historically, shocks originating in the financial sector often spilled over into the real sector with dramatic consequences. We study in the lab how interventions targeting disclosure and capital requirements of financial intermediaries can reduce insolvencies or prevent their negative effects from propagating to the broader economy. In our two-sector economy, consumers and producers can fund financial intermediaries, who, in turn, provide them with liquidity to settle trades. However, intermediaries may undertake risky investments and become insolvent, which depresses real economic activity. In the experiment, insolvencies were frequent. As a consequence, consumers and producers often refused to fund intermediaries, which lowered …

Discordance Between Balance Ability And Perception Is Associated With Falls In Parkinson’S Disease: A Coordinated Analysis, Jason K. Longhurst, Andrew Hooyman, Merrill R. Landers, Martina Mancini, Erika Franzén, Breiffni Leavy, Hanna Johansson, Daniel Peterson Nov 2024

Discordance Between Balance Ability And Perception Is Associated With Falls In Parkinson’S Disease: A Coordinated Analysis, Jason K. Longhurst, Andrew Hooyman, Merrill R. Landers, Martina Mancini, Erika Franzén, Breiffni Leavy, Hanna Johansson, Daniel Peterson

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Background: The congruence or discordance between actual and perceived balance ability has been proposed to be linked to functional outcomes such as falls. However, gaps remain in our ability to quantify discordance, and its relationship to relevant outcomes.

Objective: To investigate a novel quantification of concordance/discordance between balance performance and perception and determine the relationship to falls among people with Parkinson’s disease (PwPD).

Methods: Data from 244 PwPD were aggregated from 5 previously conducted studies. Variables extracted included age, sex, Activities-Specific Balance Confidence scale (ABC; perceived balance), Timed Up and Go (TUG; balance performance), Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson Disease …

A Patent And A Prize, Keith N. Hylton Nov 2024

A Patent And A Prize, Keith N. Hylton

Faculty Scholarship

This paper examines a simple and old question: should innovators receive a patent or a prize? The answer I provide is equally simple: they should receive both. The literature on patents versus prizes has proceeded mostly under the assumption that there should be a choice between a regime of patents and a regime of prizes in which patents fall into the public domain upon award of the prize. There are significant “public choice costs” under the prize plans. By this I mean there are risks of inappropriate transfers to patentees – that is, looting – and of confiscation of patentees, …

Enhancing Healthcare Services Through Machine Learning-Driven Anomaly Detection, Mohammad Ayoub Nather Hussain Natheruddin Nov 2024

Enhancing Healthcare Services Through Machine Learning-Driven Anomaly Detection, Mohammad Ayoub Nather Hussain Natheruddin

Theses

The healthcare industry’s expanding data presents opportunities for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Despite advancements in medical technology, medical errors remain a significant issue. Anomaly detection, identifying data points that deviate from normal patterns, is crucial for addressing these errors and detecting healthcare fraud. This study uses the “Healthcare Providers Data for Anomaly Detection” dataset to identify fraudulent activities. Clustering and two-step clustering, two unsupervised anomaly detection methods, are employed to uncover anomalies without prior knowledge. These techniques are applied to detect unusual events, such as anomalous patient health states and time-series data deviations. The study focuses on …

Who Are We, Filipinos? A Note, Leonardo R. Silos Nov 2024

Who Are We, Filipinos? A Note, Leonardo R. Silos

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

To know who we are, Filipinos, we must know who we were, Indios. On the one hand, we have few precolonial documents which might tell who the Indio was; on the other hand, the Filipino is the Westernized Indio. The Filipino is who the West says the Filipino is. According to Western research, the Filipino, like all Orientals, is a residual category of the Occidental: not Western. There is need of independent Asian research. The only really ancient documents connecting the Filipino with the Indio are perhaps our music and dance, and, above all, our languages, surely, our national language. …

Ginhawa As Ethic Of Panatà: Body Politics And The Devotion To The Black Nazarene, Mark Joseph T. Calano Nov 2024

Ginhawa As Ethic Of Panatà: Body Politics And The Devotion To The Black Nazarene, Mark Joseph T. Calano

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Operating within the ambiguity of the sacred and the secular, the devotion to the Black Nazarene in Quiapo is expressed in the different body performances and prayers directed towards the poón (image). These devotions, narratives, and norms make possible not only the performance, but also the celebration and repetition of faith experiences mediated by the body. The paper investigates the linguistic and body performances that makes possible one of the most attended religious performances in the Philippines in three parts. The first part looks into the body dynamics involved when participating in the devotion to the Black Nazarene. On the …

Neoliberal Capitalism, Asean Integration And Commodified Education: A Deleuzian Critique, Raniel Sm. Reyes Nov 2024

Neoliberal Capitalism, Asean Integration And Commodified Education: A Deleuzian Critique, Raniel Sm. Reyes

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

This article launches a Deleuzian critical diagnosis of neoliberal capitalism, which through the ASEAN Integration Project, expounds on capitalism’s effects on universities or on Philippine Higher Education. Strategists of neoliberal capitalism, whom Deleuze and Guattari call the “poor technician[s] of desire,” persuade underdeveloped or developing countries to see in their resources for financial stability or education reform, a “lack” that needs immediate attention and find solution in the global call for liberalization, deregulation, and privatization. Once this psychoanalytic ploy achieves success, these countries become naive preys of neoliberal capitalism. They interpret this phenomenon as a contemporary fascism that manipulates the …

"The Political Philosophy That Kant Did Not Write": The Potential For Politics And Political Community In Kant's Third Critique, Rizalino Noble Malabed Nov 2024

"The Political Philosophy That Kant Did Not Write": The Potential For Politics And Political Community In Kant's Third Critique, Rizalino Noble Malabed

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

In his Critique of Judgement, Immanuel Kant claims that judgement provides (1) a transition from the theoretical to the practical and unifies philosophy and (2) the principles for an alternative politics and founds the ideal political community. Vital to understanding Kant’s second claim is the idea of sensus communis, which arises from his contention that the judgement of taste appears as universal because taste not only presupposes common sense but is also community sense. This article shows that in his discussion, which moves from reflective judgement, to the judging subject, and to the sensus communis, Kant argues for a potential …

Who Counts As Filipino? Philosophical Issues Of Identity And The Chinese Filipino, Noelle Leslie Dela Cruz Nov 2024

Who Counts As Filipino? Philosophical Issues Of Identity And The Chinese Filipino, Noelle Leslie Dela Cruz

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

This article examines some recent philosophical attempts to make sense of “identity” in light of the intersecting categories of race, ethnicity, and culture. It addresses a perennial issue brought up recently with regard to Filipino Chinese: Who counts as “Filipino?” Behind this question are assumptions that I scrutinize philosophically: that there is a “Filipino” and it is possible to identify who counts as such and who does not. I begin with a survey of existing paradigms of identity which I then apply to a critical analysis of recent public discourse spawned by anti-Chinese statements made by a prominent Filipino novelist. …

The Triumph Of Finitude After Hegel And The (Re)Turn Of A Philosophy Of The Infinite Through Badiou, Kelly Louise Rexzy P. Agra Nov 2024

The Triumph Of Finitude After Hegel And The (Re)Turn Of A Philosophy Of The Infinite Through Badiou, Kelly Louise Rexzy P. Agra

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

In his first Manifesto for Philosophy, Alain Badiou alludes to the idea of sutures occurring between philosophy and the more dominant disciplines like science, politics, art, and psychoanalysis after Hegel. This phenomenon is inextricably linked to discourses about the end of philosophy and the linguistic turn in hermeneutic, analytic, and postmodern philosophies. In Badiou’s analysis one finds that in so far as these traditions are concerned, systematic philosophy is henceforth impossible. In this work, I take Badiou’s said allusion seriously and argue that after totalitarianism and the two world wars, an antipathy towards systematic philosophy has led to what I …

Deconstructing And Expanding Gender Roles: Theological Reflections On Women And Local Disaster Response, Rachel Joyce Marie O. Sanchez, Stephanie Ann Y. Puen Nov 2024

Deconstructing And Expanding Gender Roles: Theological Reflections On Women And Local Disaster Response, Rachel Joyce Marie O. Sanchez, Stephanie Ann Y. Puen

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The situation of women during and after local disasters may, at first, seem unrelated to feminist theology, but this article argues that a critical reflection on the matter helps the Church further understand the relationship between men, women, and the rest of creation. In the context of two Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) documents entitled “What is Happening to Our Beautiful Land?” (1988) and “Upholding the Sanctity of Life” (2008), this article will analyze and articulate the gender ideologies that seem to underpin how women and nature are understood, using the reflections on the situation of women in …

A Vocabulary Of Philippine Food And Well-Being, Felice Prudente Sta. Maria Nov 2024

A Vocabulary Of Philippine Food And Well-Being, Felice Prudente Sta. Maria

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

A preliminary study of culinary words during the Spanish colonial era reveals multiple dimensions to feeding. Entries in dictionaries of Philippine languages compiled from 1613 to 1895 reveal kalusugan as food for the body, kaginhawaan as sustenance for the soul, and nayánayá as nutriment for the social self. The tripartite diet was a recipe for happiness and contentment. It is a legacy to review when designing contemporary strategies for national well-being.

The Land Of Fairies Of J. R. R. Tolkien: Faërie As The “Middle Earth” Between The World Of Senses And The World Of Ideas, Diego Klautau Nov 2024

The Land Of Fairies Of J. R. R. Tolkien: Faërie As The “Middle Earth” Between The World Of Senses And The World Of Ideas, Diego Klautau

Journal of Tolkien Research

This article delves into J. R. R. Tolkien's essay "On Fairy-Stories" with the aim of outlining a giving hermeneutics for the metaphor of "Faërie," the Elfland, in dialogue with the philosophical tradition of Ancient Greece – specially with Plato's "Republic" and Aristotle's "De Anima" and "Poetics", and also the medieval reference of Aquinas’ “Summa Theologica”. The historical context of early 20th-century England and J. R. R. Tolkien's biography assure that he belonged to a Catholic religious and philosophical tradition that claimed the so-called realistic philosophy as the foundation for understanding the world. From this theoretical-methodological approach, one finds a dual …

“We Are As We Are, And Ye Are As We Find You” (Or, Finrod Elfsplains The Gift Of Ilúvatar): The ‘Athrabeth Finrod Ah Andreth’ As Core Text In Tolkien’S Legendarium, Sara Brown Nov 2024

“We Are As We Are, And Ye Are As We Find You” (Or, Finrod Elfsplains The Gift Of Ilúvatar): The ‘Athrabeth Finrod Ah Andreth’ As Core Text In Tolkien’S Legendarium, Sara Brown

Journal of Tolkien Research

The "Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth" is a highly problematic text that directly challenges, if not overturns, the eschatology of Tolkien’s legendarium. In combination with the "Tale of Adanel," we are confronted with the possibility that, in the beginning, the Atani were also deathless and that mortality was a punishment, calling into question the nature of the ‘gift of Ilúvatar’.

A Vision Of Hell: Walter Benjamin's Angelus Novus And The Catastrophe Of Progress, Pregiosa Regina Ang De Joya Nov 2024

A Vision Of Hell: Walter Benjamin's Angelus Novus And The Catastrophe Of Progress, Pregiosa Regina Ang De Joya

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Before his untimely death in 1940, the German philosopher Walter Benjamin wrote an essay, entitled “Theses on the Philosophy of History,” marking his recovery from the shock of the Hitler-Stalin non-aggression pact. This study reflects on the philosophical and historical significance of this essay, unraveling Benjamin’s critique of Marxism as a critique of progress. Progress, which the angel of history sees as a storm coming from paradise, has caused a growing pile of rubble of historical blunders and environmental disasters. This uncritical submission to progress, however, can be seen not only in the blind confidence of the communists and the …

Perceived Risk Mediation Of Website Quality In Online Clothing Shopping In A South African Township, Khathutshelo M. Makhitha, Rodney G. Duffett

The African Journal of Information Systems

South Africa lags behind other economies regarding online shopping adoption. Extant literature has focused on the influence of risk factors on consumers’ intention to shop online. However, few studies have considered the effect that mediating factors can have on relationships between other factors related to online shopping. It is particularly important to determine the mediation effect of perceived risk factors on the relationship between perceived website quality and intentions to shop online. A quantitative survey was used to collect data from 300 online shoppers who purchase clothing online and are located in the Soweto Township in Gauteng, South Africa. Perceived …

A Second-Temple Period Chalk Quarry And Vessel- Production Cave Complex On Mount Scopus, Jerusalem, Jon Seligman, David Amit, Irina Zilberbod Nov 2024

A Second-Temple Period Chalk Quarry And Vessel- Production Cave Complex On Mount Scopus, Jerusalem, Jon Seligman, David Amit, Irina Zilberbod

'Atiqot

From the latter half of the first century BCE, an increased observance of Jewish purity laws is evidenced in Judea, focusing on Jerusalem and the Temple. This is further attested by the flourishing chalk-vessel industry, producing vessels for storage and table use, which according to Halakha did not contract impurity. This article is the final report of the chalk-quarry and vessel-production cave complex uncovered on the eastern slope of Mount Scopus, dated by pottery and coins to the first century CE, including a reconstruction of the technology for producing chalk vessels and quantification of vessel types. A few pottery vessels …

The Rise And Fall Of ‘Purity Culture’ In The Land Of Israel: A Historic Perspective, Zeev Safrai Nov 2024

The Rise And Fall Of ‘Purity Culture’ In The Land Of Israel: A Historic Perspective, Zeev Safrai

'Atiqot

This article aims at determining the turning point in the adherence to the Jewish laws of purity in the Land of Israel, considering the situation before ‘the outburst of purity,’ its decline and final cessation. Four different stages were distinguished regarding the practice of purification: (1) prior to the appearance of the ritual bath (miqweh), before the Hasmonean Kingdom; (2) the period of ‘purity culture,’ when purity was widespread, becoming a central religious phenomenon; (3) individual purity; (4) the final decline of purity. Once the ‘purification water’ became unavailable, halakhic immersion was observed only by women, while symbolic purification continued …

Archaeology, Purity And Society: Some Methodological Reflections, Eyal Regev Nov 2024

Archaeology, Purity And Society: Some Methodological Reflections, Eyal Regev

'Atiqot

This article examines the assumptions and methodology underlying the correlation between stepped pools and stone vessels and purity laws and practices. It focuses on the way these are interpreted in light of Second Temple period and early rabbinic texts. The article further introduces more complex understandings of the emergence of ritual baths in the Hasmonean period as an expression of Jewish ethnic identity, and the flourishing of ritual baths and stone vessels in the first century CE, as an indication of social individualism.

Jews, Landlords And Peasants In The Ghaznavid Bamiyan Hinterland: A Private Archive From The Eleventh Century (Bamiyan Papers/Afghan Genizah), Ofir Haim

'Atiqot

This paper discusses the ‘Bamiyan Papers,’ also known as the ‘Afghan Genizah,’ which probably originated in the Bamiyan region in present-day central Afghanistan. Particular attention is given here to their earliest phase, comprising the private archive of Yehuda ben Daniel, a Jewish landowner residing in early Ghaznavid Bamiyan in the first half of the eleventh century, who plays a central role in this study. The archive documents shed significant light on the interaction between an urban private landowner and the rural population, with specific emphasis on his tenants. By closely examining two texts from the archive, this paper illuminates the …

Trash Or Cache? The Textile Evidence From The NahׅAl ‘Omer Middens As An Indicator Of Early Islamic-Period Trade Networks Along Israel’S Silk Road, Orit Shamir, Berit Hildebrandt, Roy Galili, Nofar Shamir, Guy Bar-Oz Nov 2024

Trash Or Cache? The Textile Evidence From The NahׅAl ‘Omer Middens As An Indicator Of Early Islamic-Period Trade Networks Along Israel’S Silk Road, Orit Shamir, Berit Hildebrandt, Roy Galili, Nofar Shamir, Guy Bar-Oz

'Atiqot

Middens provide an important source of data for exploring the history of ancient settlements. Excavations at the middens of Naḥal ‘Omer, an Early Islamic way-station in the ‘Arava desert, yielded a treasure-trove of textiles, such as silk and cotton, including ikats probably imported from India or South Arabia. The Early Islamic period witnessed a flourishing of artistic and cultural achievements, with textiles playing a central role in expressing creativity. The Silk Road, Mediterranean trade routes and connections with India and Central Asia facilitated the movement of textiles and inspired cross-cultural influences. This period probably witnessed a “textile revolution” that was …

Acute Care Hospitalizations: Intentional Rounding And The Relationship To Patient Satisfaction, Ernestine Lucrecia Quick

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Patients evaluate their experiences to determine if they will allow hospitals to provide their needed health services. Patient experience scores are used by hospitals to assess patients’ feelings about their interactions with the health care team and providers, the hospital facilities, and their likelihood to recommend the hospital to others. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine whether a significant difference existed in patient satisfaction between those receiving care in a North Carolina inpatient health system before and after implementing intentional rounding (IR). The three research questions addressed the independent variable by comparing Press Ganey survey data for …
