Reproductive Trends Of Male Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (Stenella Frontalis) Following Two Hurricanes In The Bahamas, Tara Southerland Pedersen
Reproductive Trends Of Male Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (Stenella Frontalis) Following Two Hurricanes In The Bahamas, Tara Southerland Pedersen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Marine mammals are impacted by hurricanes that may influence reproductive success and genetic diversity. Understanding how populations respond to demographic change is increasingly important as extreme weather events become more frequent. A population of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) on Little Bahama Bank in the Bahamas has been observed continuously since 1985. In 2004, two hurricanes struck the region within one month, resulting in the loss of approximately 36% of the population. Population declines can alter the operational sex ratio (OSR), social structure, and encounter rates among potential mates, potentially influencing patterns of reproductive success. Previous molecular studies showed that …
Development Of A Coupled Hydrological-Nitrogen Modeling Framework For Urban Stormwater Pond Analysis, Tione Grant
Development Of A Coupled Hydrological-Nitrogen Modeling Framework For Urban Stormwater Pond Analysis, Tione Grant
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Urbanization impacts the hydrological and biogeochemical processes that regulate water quality in downstream ecosystems, leading to increased stormwater volume and nitrogen loads in receiving aquatic environments. Although stormwater ponds are designed as simple hydraulic storage basins, they function more like managed ecosystems within urban drainage systems, offering both hydraulic attenuation and passive nutrient treatment. However, nitrogen removal efficiency varies significantly and depends on interactions between hydrological and biogeochemical factors. This thesis details the development, calibration, validation, and sensitivity analysis of a coupled hydrological-nitrogen model framework for Aaran’s Pond, an urban stormwater pond in Hillsborough County, Florida.

Development And Evaluation Of The East Florida Coastal Ocean Model (Efcom), Orion B. Scharton-Witmer
Development And Evaluation Of The East Florida Coastal Ocean Model (Efcom), Orion B. Scharton-Witmer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Florida’s Atlantic coast has abundant resources in beaches, state parks, aquatic preserves, and wildlife refuges as well as densely populated coastal cities in low lying areas that are all subjected to natural disaster threats from the oceans. There is an urgent need for a high-resolution coastal ocean circulation model for this region. Based on the application of the Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM), an East Florida Coastal Ocean Model (EFCOM) is developed, downscaling from the deep ocean, across the continental shelf, and into the estuaries. It employs an unstructured grid with horizontal resolution varying from 3 kilometers at the …
Where Diagnosis Meets Daily Life: Testing Theoretical Models Of Social Anxiety, Jessica A. Birg
Where Diagnosis Meets Daily Life: Testing Theoretical Models Of Social Anxiety, Jessica A. Birg
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is thought to persist through self-reinforcing cycles linking threat perception, fear of evaluation, avoidance, and social behavior. This dissertation examined whether the nature of these daily processes generalize across individuals, cluster into subgroups, or vary by social anxiety severity. Two ecological momentary assessment (EMA) studies were conducted: a community sample with and without SAD (Study 1: N = 96; five prompts per day across two 14-day bursts) and an undergraduate sample (Study 2: N = 129; six prompts per day across 14 days). Momentary variables included social anxiety, avoidance motivation, and threat and safety cues (hurt …
A System Dynamics Perspective Of User Adaptation: The Case Of Exoskeleton Technology, Enzo Novi Migliano
A System Dynamics Perspective Of User Adaptation: The Case Of Exoskeleton Technology, Enzo Novi Migliano
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Technology implementation is a common occurrence in organizations to which workers must adapt. Although research on workers' technology acceptance is widely spread, research on the workers' technology adaptation process is less represented in the literature. The discrepancy in the literature permeates research on new technologies currently being implemented in organizations, such as occupational exoskeletons. As in other technologies, the variance research perspective dominates the literature on exoskeleton implementations. The current thesis aims to foster process research by formalizing the coping model of user adaptation (Beaudry & Pinsonneault, 2005) and exploring research questions regarding workers' adaptation to general technology and exoskeletons. …
Systems And Methods For Location-Verified Augmented Reality Tourism With Multi-Signal Presence Proof And Automated Creator Monetization, Olufemi Abioye
Systems And Methods For Location-Verified Augmented Reality Tourism With Multi-Signal Presence Proof And Automated Creator Monetization, Olufemi Abioye
Defensive Publications Series
A web-delivered augmented-reality platform for location-based tourism is disclosed in which interactive story content is bound to real-world geographic locations and delivered through a standard web browser using WebXR, without installation of a native application. Physical presence at a location is established by a multi-signal verification engine that fuses geofence dwell detection, motion-trace analysis for spoofing detection, and cryptographic device attestation into a composite presence-confidence score; when the score exceeds a threshold, the system issues a signed completion token bound to a geofence hash and a time window to resist replay. Raw camera frames are retained on the user device, …

Technical Disclosure: System Architecture For Non-Equilibrium Material Synthesis: An Applied Framework For Soliton Restructuring And Boundary Layer Phase Modulation, Christopher L. Eckes
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure establishes a deterministic field theory and system architecture for altering localized material states without traditional macroscopic thermal melting or brute-force nuclear kinetic bombardment. By leveraging the bulk-to-boundary duality established in Document #11829, this method manipulates matter at the fundamental 2D Conformal Substrate layer.
By applying localized electromagnetic and acoustic phase modulations, this architecture systematically alters the coordinate z-axis mapping of existing soliton excitations (particles). This forces localized matter to safely and precisely restructure its atomic configuration via non-equilibrium thermal phase space dynamics.

Using Phenomenology To Investigate Digital Experience: An Empathic-Somatic Approach, Bismark Wiafe Bimpong, William Kesse Bimpong, Mercy Egyir Kwakye
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
This conceptual paper proposes the Empathic-Somatic Approach as a methodological contribution for conducting phenomenological research on digital technology experiences. The Empathic-Somatic Approach does not replace existing phenomenological methods but enriches them by operationalizing the insight that we understand others through our own bodies as instruments of empathy. The paper first establishes the essential philosophical and methodological foundations of phenomenology needed to situate this contribution, then develops the Empathic-Somatic Approach in detail, and finally provides practical guidance for its implementation in digital technology research. This approach offers researchers in fields such as human-computer interaction, digital health, and information systems a principled …

Feature selection is a crucial step in machine learning and data preprocessing, significantly influencing model performance and interpretability. This paper presents a comprehensive study and contributions in the domain of feature selection by integrating traditional learning techniques with ensemble-based, proposing an effective approach. We propose a Mutual Information-based feature aggregation approach applied to union sets of features, aiming to derive an optimal subset of features that maximizes accuracy. Then, we employ an ensemble method that utilizes forward selection over union sets to identify the optimal feature subsets through sequential feature selection. Our ensemble-based feature selection method called En-feat, is evaluated …

Mansoura Engineering Journal
The monitoring of electrical power quality requires advanced analysis techniques capable of accurately detecting and localizing non-stationary disturbances. This work proposes a structured and adaptive optimization of the Stockwell Transform (ST), referred to as Two-Power Optimization (TPO). A multiparametric Gaussian window governed by four parameters (m, p, k, r), is introduced, and a genetic algorithm is applied independently to each signal to optimize these parameters. The optimization process adapts the analysis scale to the local characteristics of the signal while preserving the physical consistency of the window function. Simulation results on synthetic power quality signals demonstrate that the proposed method …

Real-Time Iot-Enabled Dissolved Oxygen Monitoring And Automated Wastewater Recirculation In Constructed Wetlands, Sivasankar Pandiarajan, Vanitha Sankararajan, Devarinti Chandu
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Wastewater treatment is necessary for environmental conservation and combating water pollution. This study demonstrates real-time dissolved oxygen (DO) monitoring in constructed wetland treatment. The system would ensure an adequate supply of oxygen through automated water circulation whenever the level is below 4 mg/L, and shut down when it reaches the normal level. From experiments conducted, it was observed that within three automated circulation processes, it is possible to increase DO concentrations from 0.5 mg/L to 5.0 mg/L. Additionally, Total Dissolved Solids reduced from 1,380 ppm to 920 ppm. pH also stabilized from 8.38 to 7.9. In this system, data is …

Bridging Machine Learning And Climate Futures: A Framework For Explainable, Self-Directed (Agentic) Ai Models In Monitoring, Mitigation, And Governance Of Anthropogenic Climate Impacts, Vijayanandh Rajamanickam, Ketaki Kulkarni, Vishwanadham Mandala, Ozgur Kisi
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Environmental and societal damage due to anthropogenic climate change demands detection and mitigation strategies that are both effective and accountable. Machine Learning (ML) appears to offer a powerful set of tools but remains unexploited in these areas. A key barrier remains its poor ability to draw causal inferences about external systems, an essential requirement for meaningful continued monitoring, acting on, and shaping of the climate. Explainable, self-directed learned models operate by attributing environmental changes and deciding how best to model the resulting dynamics—they offer a natural solution. Recent developments in computational ecology, meteorology, and ML are combined to propose a …

Inference-Layer Decision Trace Logging And Coordinated Multi-Component Rollback For Ai Incident Response, Mukesh Kumar Singh
Inference-Layer Decision Trace Logging And Coordinated Multi-Component Rollback For Ai Incident Response, Mukesh Kumar Singh
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure describes two related technical methods for artificial intelligence (AI) incident response. The first method captures a defined set of data fields at each model inference event, including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) context where applicable, and writes the resulting record to append-only storage with a cryptographic hash chain linking each record to its predecessor, producing a tamper-evident forensic log. The second method defines model rollback as a single atomic operation across five independently versioned components — model weights, inference configuration, downstream service dependency versions, safety policy configuration, and a training data snapshot reference — selected by a single composite identifier …

Cryptographic Hash-Based Incident Deduplication With Architecturally-Separated Acute And Chronic Harm Classification For Ai Security Incident Records, Mukesh Kumar Singh
Defensive Publications Series
A method for deduplicating AI security incident records using a deterministic, environment-salted cryptographic hash (HMAC-SHA256) computed over incident-identifying fields, stored as a mandatory, schema-validated field on every incident record within a layered incident-classification architecture. The architecture further defines a distinct classification layer that separates the recording of acute (immediate-impact) harm from chronic (long-term, systemically-accumulating) harm as parallel fields on the same incident record — including a longitudinal harm-accumulation indicator and a trust-erosion tracking field — rather than treating chronic harm as a special case requiring a separate deduplication or merge decision. This architectural separation allows acute and chronic AI harms, …

Nonsense suppression rescues functional protein from mRNAs containing in-frame premature termination codons (PTCs). This approach employs small molecules that promote insertion of tRNAs at a PTC during translation (called “readthrough”), enabling translation to continue past the PTC to generate a full-length, functional protein. Some aminoglycosides such as G418 promote readthrough; however, their long-term use is thwarted by toxicity and modest potency. ELX-02, a novel synthetic aminoglycoside, was developed to have both enhanced readthrough activity and reduced toxicity in mammalian cells compared to traditional aminoglycosides. Recent studies suggest that at safe doses, aminoglycosides like ELX-02 may not possess sufficient efficacy to …
Driving-Related Challenges For Autistic Youth, Jeong-Heun Kim
Driving-Related Challenges For Autistic Youth, Jeong-Heun Kim
ETDs from 2020-2029
Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often face barriers to driving. Despite evidence that they have potential to drive safely, some unique challenges exist, manifested in a substantially lower licensure rate than typically developing (TD) peers and restricted driving patterns among this population. Therefore, the overarching goal of this dissertation project was to investigate driving-related challenges that young autistic people face. Both objective and subjective measures were used to comprehensively explore this research topic. The first two papers focused on investigating perceptual, cognitive, and behavioral factors underlying hazard response using data from a total of 34 licensed drivers (17 with …
Investigating The Role Of Centromere Deletion In Chromosome Segregation, Azait Imtiaz
Investigating The Role Of Centromere Deletion In Chromosome Segregation, Azait Imtiaz
ETDs from 2020-2029
Centromeres are critical genomic regions responsible for ensuring accurate chromosome segregation during cell division. Disruptions in the structural or functional integrity of centromeric DNA could impair kinetochore assembly, leading to chromosome missegregation and chromosomal instability (CIN), a hallmark of various human diseases, including systemic sclerosis (SSc). This study investigated the contribution of centromeric DNA damage and deletion to CIN and explored potential pathogenic mechanisms relevant to SSc. We utilized hTERT-immortalized fibroblast cell lines (CHON-002 and BJ-5ta) to implement two complementary approaches: (i) treatment with bleomycin, a chemotherapeutic agent known to induce DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), and (ii) targeted deletion of …
Altered But Adaptive: Network Integration In Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Survivors A Diffusion Mri Graph Theory Analysis, Amanda Cook
ETDs from 2020-2029
Pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) survivors face treatment-related risk for late-emerging cognitive difficulties. Chemotherapy can disrupt white-matter structure leading survivors to experience subtle but persistent challenges with processing speed, working memory, and executive functioning. However, cognitive outcomes vary widely even among survivors with similar treatment exposures. To better understand this variability, this study examines how the brain adapts after treatment and how that adaptation is shaped by the environment. This study used diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) connectomics to characterize white matter network organization in 18 pediatric ALL survivors compared with 20 typically developing controls (ages 10-18). Structural connectomes were …
Subjection To Chivalry: Agency, Consent, And Assault In Roman De Silence And Sir Gawain And The Green Knight, Jeremy Clay Birchfield
Subjection To Chivalry: Agency, Consent, And Assault In Roman De Silence And Sir Gawain And The Green Knight, Jeremy Clay Birchfield
ETDs from 2020-2029
Violations of consent and sexual assault occurred frequently within the genre of romance popular across medieval England and France during the late Middle Ages. While many of the characters who experienced sexual assault in these pieces of literature were women, “Subjection to Chivalry” investigates two masculine characters whose consent is violated within their respective romances. The essay explores how the experiences of Silence, the Roman de Silence’s protagonist, and Sir Gawain of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight can read as violations of consent and assault at the hands of both male and female aggressors, and questions how those violations …
Mindfulness Across Media: Examining The Effects Of Audio, Audio-Visual, And Virtual Reality Mindfulness Interventions On Social Media Mindsets And Psychological Wellbeing, Rashmi Salian
ETDs from 2020-2029
Social media is so deeply ingrained and integrated into daily life that concerns about its impact on psychological wellbeing continue to grow, prompting pressing questions about how to foster healthier and more intentional use of technology. Recent studies suggest that low-agency mindsets toward social media lead users to develop habitual usage patterns and ambiguous information consumption behaviors, both of which negatively impact psychological outcomes. However, limited research is available on mechanisms that could effectively alter these mindsets. This study uses an experimental methodology to investigate whether mindfulness interventions delivered through varying levels of media immersion can improve psychological mindsets toward …
Bringing Clarity To Tutors' Work: Designing An Effective Writing Center Staff Handbook, Maria Bunting
Bringing Clarity To Tutors' Work: Designing An Effective Writing Center Staff Handbook, Maria Bunting
ETDs from 2020-2029
Writing center literature often focuses on the documents used to justify a center’s role in the larger institution while largely ignoring internal documents that aid in training. By also answering Babcock & Thonus (2012) and Driscoll & Perdue (2014)’s call for more replicable, aggregable, and data-based (RAD) research in writing centers, this study addresses this literature gap by conducting a qualitative study about a newly-implemented handbook at a public R1 university. The author first includes a description of the collaborative document creation process before describing the empirical methods used to assess the handbook’s effectiveness. The findings illustrate how effective handbooks …
Mechanisms Of Cyst Initiation And Expansion In Polycystic Kidney Disease: Alterations In Tubule Flow Dynamics And P21- Driven Epithelial Reprogramming, Isis Thomas
ETDs from 2020-2029
Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common inherited disorder characterized by progressive cyst formation, kidney enlargement, and eventual renal failure. Mutations in PKD1 or PKD2 disrupt polycystin-mediated mechanosensory signaling in renal epithelial cells, altering calcium signaling, epithelial architecture, and cellular homeostasis. Although cyst expansion has historically been attributed to epithelial hyperproliferation or tubule pinching off to form a cyst that no longer remains connected with the tubule, the early physiological and molecular events that initiate cyst formation remain incompletely understood. This dissertation investigates how alterations in tubule flow dynamics and epithelial stress responses contribute to cyst initiation and …
Investigation Of Air Emissions With A Local Composites Industry, Chris White
Investigation Of Air Emissions With A Local Composites Industry, Chris White
ETDs from 2020-2029
Workers at an office space raised complaints about a sweet-smelling odor directly outside their building. After an initial assessment of the surrounding businesses and their processes, it was determined that the workers were most likely exposed to styrene emissions from a nearby composites company. This investigation utilizes multiple weeks of direct readings with a photoionization device and active environmental sampling with a charcoal tube and pump to confirm the styrene exposure hypothesis. Weather trends were also recorded to determine correlation between weather and exposure to the sweet-smelling chemical. The direct readings found an exposure maximum of less than 2 ppm …
Holding The Dying: Worldview, Community, And The Practice Of End-Of-Life Doula Care, Amy J. Shields
Holding The Dying: Worldview, Community, And The Practice Of End-Of-Life Doula Care, Amy J. Shields
ETDs from 2020-2029
As populations age and chronic illness increasingly characterizes the final stages of life in the United States, end-of-life doulas (EOLDs) have emerged as non-medical practitioners who support dying people and their families through education, companionship, advocacy, and ritualized care. Drawing on a thematic analysis of 18 semi-structured interviews with practicing EOLDs across the United States, this thesis examines how EOLDs conceptualize a “good death,” navigate emotionally intensive work, and sustain themselves in an unregulated and often marginal professional landscape. Situating EOLD practice within anthropological scholarship on death and dying, the study highlights the ways EOLDs challenge dominant biomedical narratives that …
Enhancing Dynamic Balance And Mobility In Adolescents With Cerebral Palsy Or Spina Bifida, Phuong Thi Minh Quach
Enhancing Dynamic Balance And Mobility In Adolescents With Cerebral Palsy Or Spina Bifida, Phuong Thi Minh Quach
ETDs from 2020-2029
Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Spina Bifida (SB) are among the most prevalent pediatric neuromotor impairments, posing significant challenges to independent mobility and dynamic balance. Although arising from different neurological origins, CP from non-progressive brain disruptions during development and SB from lower motor neuron lesions in the neural tube, both the conditions often lead to similar functional limitations, including muscle weakness, impaired gait and limited mobility. Affected children typically exhibit compromised postural control and an increased dependence on assistive devices. Over time, this decline in independent physical activity often triggers secondary health issues, such as early onset of osteoporosis, hypertension, and …

High precision lightning localization is essential for atmospheric research and public safety, yet the high cost of traditional VLF/LF systems restricts high resolution detection primarily to well funded agencies. Furthermore, conventional low frequency receivers often overlook microwave frequency emissions associated with lightning leader development. This thesis proposes a compact, low cost microwave frequency localization system operating in the 1.42 GHz band to provide an accessible alternative for high resolution mapping. The methodology utilizes an ARM Cortex M0+ microcontroller and a triggered 64 MHz 32 bit counter synchronized to a GPS Pulse Per Second (PPS) signal, achieving a temporal resolution of …
