“That Middle School Is Trash!!!!”: Public Knowledge About Local Schools On Social Media, Ashley Carey Jan 2025

“That Middle School Is Trash!!!!”: Public Knowledge About Local Schools On Social Media, Ashley Carey

Education Faculty Publications

Purpose: Americans frequently turn to online social networking sites (OSNs) as a source of news and information. Yet the role of OSNs in knowledge formation about local public schools remains underexamined. This study explores how public knowledge about local schools is constructed on Facebook. Research Methods/Approach: This ethnographic case study centers on a large “private” Facebook group in the community of Oldtown (pseudonym). Drawing on digital public sphere theory, this study examines who posts about the schools on Facebook, what they post, and how interaction shapes the collective knowledge about local schools on Facebook and beyond. Findings: Posts with the …

Afghan Students Are More Than Just English Learners, Farilla Saboor Jan 2025

Afghan Students Are More Than Just English Learners, Farilla Saboor

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis examines the strengths that Afghan students and their families bring to U.S. schools and how these strengths are often overlooked. Drawing on my experience as an Afghan immigrant, math teacher, and bilingual instructional aide, I explore how Afghan students, parents, and teachers describe these cultural, linguistic, and relational assets that shape students’ learning and sense of belonging. I use the Community Cultural Wealth (CCW) and Funds of Knowledge (FoK) as guiding frameworks to understand the aspirational, linguistic, familial, social, navigational, and resistant capital present in participants’ experiences (Moll et al., 1992; Yosso, 2005).

I conducted qualitative interviews with …

Human Perception Of Ai Capabilities At Classifying Perturbed Roadway Signs, Katherine R. Garcia, Jing Chen, Yanru Xiao, Scott Mishler, Cong Wang, Bin Hu Jan 2025

Human Perception Of Ai Capabilities At Classifying Perturbed Roadway Signs, Katherine R. Garcia, Jing Chen, Yanru Xiao, Scott Mishler, Cong Wang, Bin Hu

Psychology Faculty Publications

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is crucial to numerous functions required for driving automation systems, including the computer vision techniques used to detect the roadway environment and make real-time decisions. However, the images used as inputs to the AI system may be maliciously perturbed, or manipulated, causing the AI system to make an incorrect classification. In this study, we examined humans’ perception of the AI’s computer vision capability of classifying various road sign images, including the original images, images with two different types of malicious attacks, and images that are scrambled randomly at the pixel level. Our results showed that participants rated …

Accidental Left Ventricular Placement Of A Leadless Micra Pacemaker Through A Patent Foramen Ovale, Hamza Alkowatli, Mahmoud Kutmah, Adnan Shaik, Osama Hallak

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

The Micra device is a leadless pacemaker implanted in the right ventricle via a femoral vein transcatheter approach. There are several indications for and advantages to using a leadless pacemaker, and the device's role in the field of cardiology will probably continue to increase. This article presents the case of a rare complication probably due to inadvertent placement of the device in the left ventricle across an undiagnosed patent foramen ovale.

Scope And Mechanism Of The Ruthenium-Catalyzed Sp3 C–H Coupling Reaction Of 2-Alkylindoles With Enones For The Synthesis Of Carbazole Derivatives, Krishna Prasad Gnyawali, Mina Son, Donghun Hwang, Nuwan Asanka Pannilawithana, Mu-Hyun Baik, Chase S. Yi

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The catalytic system consisting of a cationic Ru–H complex 1 and 3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1,2-benzoquinone (L1) was found to be highly effective for the dehydrative sp3 C–H coupling reaction of 2-alkyl substituted indoles with enones to form 2,4-disubstituted carbazole products. The analogous coupling reaction of 2-alkylindoles with linear enones bearing the cyclic olefinic group afforded tetracyclic carbazole products. A normal deuterium kinetic isotope effect was measured from the coupling reaction of 1,2-dimethylindole versus 1-methyl-2-(methyl-d3)indole with (E)-3-penten-2-one (kH/kD = 2.5). The Hammett plot was constructed from the reaction of para-substituted …

Olfactory sensory neurons within the nasal epithelium detect volatile odorants and relay odor information to the central nervous system. Unlike other sensory inputs, olfactory sensory neurons interface with the external environment and project their axons directly into the central nervous system. The use of adeno-associated viruses to target these neurons has garnered interest for applications in gene therapy, probing olfactory sensory neuron biology, and modeling disease. To date, there is no consensus on the optimal AAV serotype for efficient and selective transduction of olfactory sensory neurons

Secrets Of The Killing State: The Medical Professional Mandate, Corinna Barrett Lain Jan 2025

Secrets Of The Killing State: The Medical Professional Mandate, Corinna Barrett Lain

Law Faculty Publications

When New Jersey reinstated the death penalty in 1983, the state hadn’t conducted an execution in twenty years, so no one knew how to conduct an execution by lethal injection. Doctors at the state prison refused to participate, citing medical ethics that required them to “support life, not end it,” and that left prison officials thinking that they might have to conduct the executions themselves. “That is not an easy task for an amateur,” a reporter covering the quandary wrote. Unsure of what else do to, officials called upon Fred Leuchter, an engineer who had worked with a number of …

The Role Of Tradition In Classical And Contemporary Argument, Laura A. Webb Jan 2025

The Role Of Tradition In Classical And Contemporary Argument, Laura A. Webb

Law Faculty Publications

Integrating tradition in legal arguments remains an effective persuasive strategy, serving as a source of legitimacy and appeal, fostering the establishment of a shared identity between the speaker and the audience, and cultivating a sense of belonging to a distinct group with defined notions of its identity. This chapter examines the strategic utilization of the concept of tradition in forensic rhetoric. It investigates how communicators shape and influence discourse within forensic settings by leveraging enduring cultural norms, purported intentions and beliefs of esteemed historical figures, and narratives concerning a people's historical trajectory. By examining cases from the popular courts of …

Self-Compassion And Law Student Professional Identity Formation, Janice Craft Jan 2025

Self-Compassion And Law Student Professional Identity Formation, Janice Craft

Law Faculty Publications

The American Bar Association’s Standards for Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar require law schools to provide students with “substantial opportunities” for “[t]he development of a professional identity.” The Standards do not require a particular curriculum or mode of instruction but offer two guideposts for legal educators: one, that “professional identity focuses on what it means to be a lawyer and the special obligations lawyers have to their clients and society,” and two, that professional formation “should involve an intentional exploration of the values, guiding principles, and well-being practices considered foundational to successful legal practice.” The guidance and concomitant …

The Masterplot Of The Market, Allison Anna Tait, Luke P. Norris Jan 2025

The Masterplot Of The Market, Allison Anna Tait, Luke P. Norris

Law Faculty Publications

Stories about the family, work, and the market circulate in law, legal discourse, and beyond. The family, we are told by numerous authorities, is a non-market site, centred on emotional attachment rather than economic transaction. It is a site of interpersonal care, growth, and nurturance that acts as a counter to the excesses of an unbridled marketplace. The market, in contrast, is a site where autonomous beings contract, pursuing their interests efficiently and maximising wealth. This is one masterplot of the market, which, as it operates in the United States, constructs certain household members outside of the market and constructs …

Minor V. Happersett, Dobbs V. Jackson Women's Health Organization, And The Supreme Court's Refusal To Reconstruct America, Henry L. Chambers Jr. Jan 2025

Minor V. Happersett, Dobbs V. Jackson Women's Health Organization, And The Supreme Court's Refusal To Reconstruct America, Henry L. Chambers Jr.

Law Faculty Publications

One hundred and fifty years ago, in the wake of the ratification of the Reconstruction Amendments, the United States Supreme Court decided Minor v. Happersett. In Minor, the Court ruled Missouri could continue to deny women the right to vote based on their sex. The decision was simply reasoned. In the absence of clear constitutional text requiring Missouri to provide the right to vote to women or proof that the right to vote was a right of citizenship, Missouri had no obligation to allow women to vote. Some states had banned women citizens from voting since the country’s founding. Missouri …

Qualified Immunity & Subjective Knowledge, John F. Preis Jan 2025

Qualified Immunity & Subjective Knowledge, John F. Preis

Law Faculty Publications

There is something weird going on within the doctrine of qualified immunity. The Supreme Court and lower courts routinely claim that officers who “knowingly violate the law” are not entitled to qualified immunity, but then—in almost the same breath—assert that an officer’s knowledge of the law is irrelevant to the qualified immunity analysis. What is even more strange is that these two opposing views can apparently be traced to the foundational case in the field: Harlow v. Fitzgerald.

This Article explores and proposes a resolution to this apparent contradiction. Beginning with Harlow itself, the Article explores the case using the …

Exploring Lgbtq+ Competency In Healthcare, Jordan Whiteman

Honors College Theses

Marginalized groups such as the LGBTQ+ community are known to face healthcare disparities that negatively affect their process of navigating healthcare systems. This project explores the perceived lack of representation and understanding of the LGBTQ+ community within healthcare settings, exposing the deficits in knowledge for unique challenges and inequalities these patients may face. By viewing the literature, a myriad of complications faced by LGBTQ+ people in clinical settings can be identified. They possess a generalized feeling of mistrust towards the healthcare system. Healthcare staff overall describe low confidence with caring for this demographic. Heteronormativity’s presence in the field of healthcare …

I Prophesy Disaster: Adapting Musical Storytelling To Fashion, Adam Snedden Jan 2025

I Prophesy Disaster: Adapting Musical Storytelling To Fashion, Adam Snedden

Honors College Theses

Fashion is an artistic medium, where garments communicate ideas to any potential viewers by using visual imagery and relying on our cultural expectations. At the level of haute couture design, these visuals grow more elaborate and dramatic. With this project, I wanted to accomplish the goal of adapting a song, the gothic-inspired progressive rock epic A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, into a single couture-style look. Getting as many details of the song as possible to be apparent in an overcoat, shirt, and pants was a challenging task that required extensive use of embroidery and attention to detail. Additionally, this look …

Exploring Public Support For Prison Labor, Omar Morris Jan 2025

Exploring Public Support For Prison Labor, Omar Morris

Honors College Theses

Prison labor has long been a central component of the U.S. correctional system, evolving from early penitentiary models to contemporary labor practices that remain legally sanctioned under the Thirteenth Amendment. This study examines the historical development, key legislation, and modern realities of prison labor, emphasizing its economic, ethical, and rehabilitative implications. Using survey data from a nationally representative sample, the study assesses public attitudes toward mandatory prison work, fair wages for incarcerated individuals, and financial obligations such as medical copays and communication fees. Findings reveal that while the public generally supports prison labor, opinions diverge on compensation and economic burdens …

Embodied Mythology Of Rhetoric: The Dialectic Of The Gender Binary Logos, Isaac A. Lacap Jan 2025

Embodied Mythology Of Rhetoric: The Dialectic Of The Gender Binary Logos, Isaac A. Lacap

Honors College Theses

Gender is often described as a social construct. This description usually contrasts social construction with other unchanging, unambiguous concepts. Through Chiara Bottici's analysis, I argue the concept of myth breaks us from this dichotomy. By understanding myth as the persistent creation of significance through narratives, we no longer leave myth to the ambit of untruth and unreality. Instead, we see myths as a way to direct people’s actions by giving them a way to see the world. By integrating Bottici with Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology, I argue the significance of myth occurs through embodiment by organizing gestures. These gestures form a system …

Keynote: Promoting Disability Equality Behind Bars, Margo Schlanger Jan 2025

Keynote: Promoting Disability Equality Behind Bars, Margo Schlanger

Articles

A few years back, I finished a five-year appointment as a “settlement monitor” in a state prison system for a civil rights case about deaf and hard-of hearing people incarcerated there. With the consent of the parties, I had been appointed by a federal court to spend time in the state’s prisons, talking to prisoners and staff, and reviewing records and facilities. I saw some obvious problems. I recall one deaf prisoner; he used American Sign Language to communicate and could not speak at all. He was found to have committed a disciplinary infraction at a proceeding where he could …

Blessed Is Anyone Who Will Eat Bread In The Kingdom Of God: Reading The Lukan Meal-Scenes As Proleptic Messianic Banquets Signaling The Dawn Of The End Of Exile, Brian Spencer Kelly Jan 2025

Blessed Is Anyone Who Will Eat Bread In The Kingdom Of God: Reading The Lukan Meal-Scenes As Proleptic Messianic Banquets Signaling The Dawn Of The End Of Exile, Brian Spencer Kelly

Theses and Dissertations

Scholars frequently claim that there existed an expectation for an eschatological/ messianic banquet in Second Temple Judaism, that the banquet was used as an image for the blessed age to come, and that Jesus’ praxis of banqueting with reputed sinners related to the messianic banquet tradition. These three claims are often assumed, resulting in three problematic trends: evidence for the messianic banquet tradition is often lacking, the tradition is typically treated in isolation from other eschatological expectations, and the tradition’s connection to Jesus’ fellowship is inadequately demonstrated. This thesis begins by surveying the gamut of Second Temple literature for the …

Social Media, Populism, And Militant Democracy: An Argument For A Change In First Amendment Doctrine, Arvid Kerschnitzki Jan 2025

Social Media, Populism, And Militant Democracy: An Argument For A Change In First Amendment Doctrine, Arvid Kerschnitzki

Chapman Law Review

The First Amendment is often hailed as the cornerstone of American self-government, but the digital age has transformed the public discourse it was meant to protect. Social media platforms, once envisioned as a modern marketplace of ideas, now amplify misinformation, entrench echo chambers, and enable mass manipulation, threatening the democratic ideal of an informed citizenry.

While the current First Amendment doctrine rightly emphasizes the importance of public discourse, that discourse must be inclusive, rational, and reliable to serve its democratic function. Drawing on the concept of militant democracy, this Article argues that contemporary doctrine has lost sight of free speech’s …

Fingerprints Of Injustice: The Truth Behind Artificial Intelligence And Algorithmic-Driven Evidence,, Aubrey Butler

Chapman Law Review

Artificial intelligence (AI) has steadily grown in prominence, reaching into nearly every aspect of daily life, and the legal system is not immune from its influence. As various forms of machine evidence have been admitted in court, there has been an accompanying rise in concerns from researchers, judges, and defense attorneys as to the trustworthiness and reliability of this new category of evidence.

Though AI and machine evidence takes various forms, this Note focuses on some of the most prominent programs being used in courtrooms today, namely the probabilistic genotyping software TrueAllele and the recidivism rate prediction software COMPAS. The …

New York Environmental Legislation In 2024, Michael B. Gerrard

Faculty Scholarship

In 2024, New York State enacted several laws aimed either at dealing with the adverse impacts of climate change such as extreme heat and increasingl severe and frequent storms or at helping to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions to avoid or minimize the adverse impacts. The final bill signed by Governor Kathy Hochul in 2024 was the most high-profile of these laws — the Climate Change Superfund Act, which will require fossil fuel companies to pay for adaptation measures.

Other new laws last year related to extreme heat in schools and prisons, food waste, expanded polystyrene containers, community gardens, and native …

Chevron deference is dead. The Court’s forty-year, seventy-decision experiment with Article-III-court deference to “reasonable” agency interpretations of ambiguous federal statutes failed, killed in part by concern that it unduly curbed the “judicial Power” to enforce the rule of law in the face of politics, partisanship, and mission-driven agency decision-making.

“AEDPA deference” lives. The Court’s twenty-five-year, seventy-two decision experiment with Article-III-court deference to “reasonable” state-court interpretations of the Constitution under the 1996 Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act continues to relegate criminal defendants to prison or death, notwithstanding federal habeas judges’ independent judgment that the state courts have misread or misapplied …

The Politics Of Bank Supervision: From Eccles To Bessent, Kathryn Judge Jan 2025

The Politics Of Bank Supervision: From Eccles To Bessent, Kathryn Judge

Faculty Scholarship

Throughout his tenure as chair of the Federal Reserve Board, Marriner Eccles pressed President Franklin D. Roosevelt to overhaul bank supervision. Eccles eventually made his ongoing service as chair contingent on FDR agreeing to support the effort. This initiative is commonly depicted as a power grab. Federal bank regulation and supervision, then and now, is divvied up among three agencies, the Federal Reserve, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the Comptroller of the Currency. Eccles wanted the Fed, and the Fed alone, to be the federal bank supervisor. Having already succeeded in enhancing his power once, by spearheading reforms that …

Hillslope Degradation: Coarse Sands May Move Faster But Fines Dominate Flux, Robert Chance Jan 2025

Hillslope Degradation: Coarse Sands May Move Faster But Fines Dominate Flux, Robert Chance

Theses and Dissertations

Hillslopes are one of the most pervasive landforms on Earth yet the details of the processes that drive their evolution are not completely understood. Excluding boulders, the majority of mass and volume in soil-mantled hillslopes is composed of sand-sized and finer grains. Understanding the transport rates and governing transport mechanisms of these grains is therefore key to advancing our knowledge of hillslope evolution. This research investigates sand-sized sediment transport through field experiments at 20 sites tracking surface sediment motion and 11 sites measuring depth-dependent transport. These empirical results are compared against outputs from a novel grain-based hillslope diffusion simulation (GBHDS), which …

Examining A Year One Sor Implementation: A Mixed-Method Study Of Teacher Experiences And Student Literacy Scores, Christine Litzinger

Theses and Dissertations

With increasing national and legislative mandates prioritizing SoR practices, many schools are shifting their literacy practices to align classroom instruction, interventions, and screening to follow reading research, which can require a shift in pedagogy for individual educators and schools. This exploratory sequential mixed-methods study explored a year one implementation of the Science of Reading (SoR) in a mid-size midwestern school district during their first year of across-district literacy reform. Qualitative case study interviews were conducted of K-3 Classroom teachers (4) and literacy coaches (4). Emergent themes from the findings included value in high fidelity professional development, challenges related to resource …

Using Machine Learning To Investigate Weather Impacts On Crop Yield For Probabilistic, Climate-Informed Predictive Crop Breeding, Levi Newell Jan 2025

Using Machine Learning To Investigate Weather Impacts On Crop Yield For Probabilistic, Climate-Informed Predictive Crop Breeding, Levi Newell

Theses and Dissertations

As the world’s population continues to grow, the importance of food security willonly continue to increase, with some estimates requiring a global increase in food production between 59 and 98% by 2050. The agriculture industry is also a crucial economic driver, with the industry supporting 20% of the state of North Dakota’s workforce, and with a total valuation of $41.3 billion. The economic importance of this industry and the challenges of future growth prompt a need for data driven decision making into the future, particularly with predictive crop breeding. This is the method by which crops are developed that are …

Mindfulness And Modification Therapy (Mmt) Group Feasibility And Acceptability Among Prison Residents With Dysregulated Behaviors, Leslie Unger

Theses and Dissertations

Mindfulness and Modification Therapy (MMT; Wupperman, 2019) is a transdiagnostic therapy that systematically integrates aspects of six empirically supported treatments for impulsive and dysregulated behavior. As such, MMT may offer an efficient approach to addressing a variety of dysregulated behaviors, thereby supporting increased safety within carceral settings and enhancing goals of rehabilitation. To date, MMT has demonstrated positive results in community settings when treating substance misuse and anger/aggression, but it has not yet been examined in a prison setting. The present research examines the feasibility and acceptability of using a 14-session version of group MMT as a voluntary treatment option …

Revolutionizing The Immaculate Conception: The Limitations Of Medieval Theology And The Advancements Of John Duns Scotus, Emily G. Knoppe

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Although in the modern era, the Immaculate Conception is a controversial doctrine that prompts conflict primarily between Catholic and non-Catholic groups, during the medieval period Roman Catholics were greatly divided on the topic. Opposition to the belief hinges not only on its lack of scriptural basis and complicated theology, which some deem as placing Mary outside of the need for Christ’s redemption, but also on the fact that it was not declared dogma until 1854 by Pope Pius IX. In this thesis, I first consider how Augustine of Hippo’s original sin theology laid the foundation for avid rejection of the …
