Identification And Characterization Of Novel Crispr-Cas Immune Effectors, Christian Fredrick Baca
Identification And Characterization Of Novel Crispr-Cas Immune Effectors, Christian Fredrick Baca
Student Theses and Dissertations
Bacteria are under constant threat by the viruses that infect them called bacteriophages or phages for short. It is predicted that phages outnumber bacteria by an order of magnitude, producing a tremendous pressure for resistance mechanisms against this threat. One of the most abundant immune systems bacteria have evolved to combat this are CRISPR-Cas systems, which have been studied extensively due to their fascinating biology and usefulness in biotechnology and therapeutics. My thesis focuses on the discovery and characterization of three new CRISPR-Cas effector proteins that provide immunity in bacteria in response to phage challenge with highly diverse activities. CRISPR-Cas …
Black Pioneers Of Integrated Baseball In California, Revised, Mark E. Eberle
Black Pioneers Of Integrated Baseball In California, Revised, Mark E. Eberle
Monographs
During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Black athletes were barred from playing baseball in the major and minor leagues, as well as other teams of white players, with relatively few exceptions. Research on baseball’s color line has primarily focused on organized baseball (the major and minor leagues). The nine essays in this monograph are an introductory exploration of integrated baseball in California at various levels, from amateur to professional teams. The first six essays are biographies of seven Black ballplayers who played on predominantly white teams engaged in intercity competition for multiple years from 1886 to 1909. The seventh …

Comparisons Of The Effects Of White Noise And Classical Background Music On Student On-Task Engagement During Work Cycles In A Lower-Elementary Montessori Class, Lee Ellis
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This study compares the effects of classical and white noise background music, played during in-class work cycles for lower elementary students (grades 1-3) at a Montessori school in Pennsylvania. I aim to measure academic on-task engagement and overall classroom behavior. I will observe and record notes on their progress when there is no background sound, white noise, or classical music playing. Research has shown that introducing different sounds to the background of a classroom can positively affect student focus and retention of information (Levitin, 2006; Williams, 1961). Manipulation of sound or music played in the background can have a sizable …

(D)Evolution Of International Commercial Arbitration In Mexico, Edwin N. Á. Román
(D)Evolution Of International Commercial Arbitration In Mexico, Edwin N. Á. Román
Arbitration Brief
The 1990s were a time of vibrant international rulemaking in the field of international economic law, during which Mexico transformed from a closed to an open economy. In 1993, Mexico adopted the 1985 UNICITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration. In 2011, Mexico amended its commercial code by introducing a specific proceeding to enforce and set aside arbitration awards titled “Juicio Especial sobre Transacciones Comerciales y Arbitraje.” Alongside these amendments, Mexico became an internationally relevant jurisdiction for the recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards. This article analyzes the evolution of the Mexican Supreme Court of Justice’s jurisprudence concerning international …
Should Decisions Of Independent Accountability Mechanisms Be Binding?, Lalanath De Silva, Giada Giacomini
Should Decisions Of Independent Accountability Mechanisms Be Binding?, Lalanath De Silva, Giada Giacomini
Perspectives
In this essay, it is argued that IAMs should be empowered with binding decision-making authority to enhance their effectiveness and ensure that justice is served, and remedies delivered. This argument is supported by analyzing the right of access to justice. Further, this essay analyses existing mechanisms with binding decision-making power that have already been created or acknowledged by IFIs; these mechanisms include IFI administrative tribunals for employees, arbitration processes for commercial disputes, integrity related sanctions regimes, and the appeal bodies that hear access to information decisions. The IFIs’ embrace of binding decisions in these contexts demonstrates that nothing prevents IFIs …

National Security Issues Arising In Anticorruption Enforcement, Anthony J. Lewis, Aisling O'Shea
American University National Security Law Brief
The overlap between national security and corruption has long been recognized; however, the government’s views on the nature of the overlap have shifted over time. For instance, in June 2021, the Biden administration announced an initiative to combat corruption as a core national security interest. The administration ordered a review by fifteen government agencies and offices, including the Central Intelligence Agency and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Then, in February 2025, the Trump administration declared that “overexpansive and unpredictable” enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977 (“FCPA”) “actively harms American competitiveness and, therefore, national security.” …

Preventing Suicide In Jails: Examining Community, Facility, And Individual Differences, Mijin Kim, Victor J. St. John, Jason Szkola
Faculty Publications - Criminal Justice Sciences
Suicide remains the leading cause of death in U.S. correctional facilities, underscoring the importance of identifying factors contributing to elevated risk. Drawing on national data on jail fatalities from 2011 to 2019, this study examines suicide risk across macro-level (community infrastructure), meso-level (facility characteristics), and micro-level (individual vulnerabilities) domains. Multivariate regression analyses indicate that, at the micro-level, being young, White, male, unconvicted, or serving a short length of stay increases suicide likelihood. Rural isolation is associated with higher suicide rates, whereas overcrowding is linked to lower rates. Interaction models further demonstrate that rural jails without overcrowding experience the highest suicide …
Optimizing Pelvic Health: Evaluating The Efficacy Of Prenatal Strength And Resistance Training Combined With Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercises In Reducing Pelvic Organ Prolapse Risk, Samantha Requilman
Optimizing Pelvic Health: Evaluating The Efficacy Of Prenatal Strength And Resistance Training Combined With Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercises In Reducing Pelvic Organ Prolapse Risk, Samantha Requilman
Nursing | Senior Theses
While postnatal recovery is focused on the newborn, the mother’s health is equally important – particularly in preventing pelvic organ prolapse (POP), a condition that results in pelvic discomfort, incontinence, and a reduced quality of life. Although clinicians encourage pelvic floor muscle exercises (PFME) throughout pregnancy, POP is still prevalent among women, especially those who deliver vaginally. There are limited research studies on the effectiveness of prenatal resistance training in the prevention of pelvic dysfunctions and this study aims to address the gaps in the literature. So the question to address this study is: Does combining prenatal resistance training with …

North Texas Research Forum 2025
Introduction Cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL) is a rare, cutaneous, malignant neoplasm of the resident T cell lymphocytes within the skin. CTCL encompasses a spectrum of morphologically and prognostically distinct entities, the most common of which is mycosis fungoides (MF). The incidence of mycosis fungoides is about 6 cases per million per year in the United States and Europe. MF is notoriously difficult to diagnose clinically. It can masquerade as several common dermatologic conditions and may be treated as such for years until a biopsy reveals the correct diagnosis. One of the most common diseases that MF mimics is atopic …

(find sources but I found several possible uses). As with any therapy, there are side effects. One potential side effect of Rituximab that has only been described a few times in the literature is hypokalemia. One such report is a case report from 2020 that describes symptomatic hypokalemia in an 18-year-old female with steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome after her 6th rituximab infusion, with K dropping from 4.0 prior to infusion to 2.3 at the …

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers are a major source of preventable morbidity in adults with diabetes; however, complications impose an increased burden on patients and healthcare systems. Vibration therapy is a potential new modality for DFU treatment, which may be more accessible to individuals. Literature pertaining to the effect of high-frequency low amplitude (HFLA) vibrotherapy on wound healing needs a literature review to help synthesize and integrate the empirical studies' results. The purpose of this study is to review how vibration physiology relates to skin blood flow which impacts wound healing based on previous studies. METHODS: A selective literature review was …

Enduring Wisdom For Leaders: Bringing A Biblical Worldview To Leadership And Management, Daniel Crute
Enduring Wisdom For Leaders: Bringing A Biblical Worldview To Leadership And Management, Daniel Crute
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Leadership is fundamental to human relations and society but involves many mysteries. Based on the premise that human nature has been consistent over time, this study investigates an ancient text, the most published book in history, with three research questions: What are key insights for leaders from a biblical worldview? How do those insights align with current scholarship? How do they add to our understanding to help current leaders? Key points were drawn from all 66 books of the Bible. Using inductive research methods, 310 key points were comparatively analyzed, grouped into common themes, and organized into a conceptual model, …
Dim Theory Applied To Law: The Disintegration Of American Law, Tristen Fleig
Dim Theory Applied To Law: The Disintegration Of American Law, Tristen Fleig
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Plato, Aristotle, and Montesquieu each argued the importance of law to political regime and Constitution. The ancients emphasized the law as the rational component of the regime and Montesquieu applied some of the first political science to show how political regimes rely upon law. Still, the exact connection between law and politics, and law and philosophy more broadly has remained largely obscured. In my account, legal system ought to be understood as the institutional framework that supports and protect a particular kind of life accepted by the intellectuals and the people of a nation. Using DIM theory from The DIM …
The Mediating Role Of Social Connectedness In The Association Between Volunteering And Affect In Daily Life: A Dynamic Approach, Megan E. Mansfield
The Mediating Role Of Social Connectedness In The Association Between Volunteering And Affect In Daily Life: A Dynamic Approach, Megan E. Mansfield
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Sustained engagement in prosocial behaviors, like volunteering is an evidence-supported facilitator of well-being. Volunteering and well-being are also dynamic processes unfolding over long and short timespans, which is well reflected in research on well-being (e.g., Heshmati et al., 2023) but less so in the research on volunteering. This is the case despite existing evidence demonstrating that dynamic changes in components of well-being, like emotions, are associated with engagement in particular behaviors including civic or prosocial behaviors (Hou & Bonanno, 2018; Snippe et al., 2017). Therefore, it would be reasonable to suspect that volunteering may have a similar dynamic relationship with …
Personal Wisdom And Coping: Insights From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Noah Ringler
Personal Wisdom And Coping: Insights From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Noah Ringler
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Much of personal wisdom research has focused on the relationship between personal wisdom and difficult life events (DLEs). Research indicates that those high in personal wisdom cope more effectively with DLEs. However, these studies primarily focused on older adults and assessed coping through well-being measures. Seeking to address these limitations, Ringler (2021) found that mindfulness partially mediates the relationship between personal wisdom and coping with DLEs (measured through meaning-making) in a more age-diverse sample. Despite this progress, several gaps in knowledge remain. For example, there is still a lack of understanding about how wisdom relates to the use of specific …

PURPOSE: Compared to their cisgender/heterosexual peers, LGBTQ+ college students are at elevated risk of substance use and mental health challenges. Having more LGBTQ+ identity support is related to less depression and better recovery outcomes. Collegiate recovery programs (CRPs) provide wraparound support to students in recovery, but limited research has examined the unique needs of LGBTQ+ CRP students. We examined the relationship between LGBTQ+ identity support, identity-related discrimination experiences, depression, and recovery capital. We also compared the psychosocial and recovery functioning of LGBTQ+ CRP students. METHODS: We examined data from N=113 LGBTQ+ participants from the National Longitudinal Collegiate Recovery Study. Outness Through A Cultural Lens: Self-Construal Impacts Disclosure Among Diverse Sexual Minority Individuals, Ivy Alexandra Carrete
Outness Through A Cultural Lens: Self-Construal Impacts Disclosure Among Diverse Sexual Minority Individuals, Ivy Alexandra Carrete
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This research aimed to advance an empirically informed understanding of the role of culture in sexual identity management decisions and disclosure tendencies among sexual minority individuals (SMIs) from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Sexual identity management decisions – in relation to voluntary disclosure of sexual identity – reflect purposeful interactions between SMIs and their environments shaped by the self-concept and resulting in motivational preferences and tendencies regarding disclosure that permeate across social contexts and life domains (Jones & King, 2014, Lidderdale et al, 2007; Ragins, 2008). Recognizing cultural worldviews (e.g., collectivism and individualism) as deeply embedded within the self-concept, the present research …

From Self-Determination To Decolonization: How American Indian Activism Reshaped Museum Spaces, Daniel A. Gruber
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The American Indian self-determination movement of the 1960s and 1970s catalyzed fundamental transformations in how museums represent Indigenous cultures, histories, and peoples. Through analyzing the demands for tribal sovereignty, cultural authority, and equitable representation during this pivotal era, I show how these principles were applied in contemporary museum practice through an exhibition analysis of the Autry Museum of the American West. This thesis traces how federal American Indian policy evolved from legal and socio-cultural assimilation toward self-determination while also examining how anthropology and museums historically reinforced colonial and imperial narratives that positioned American Indians as federally dependent, scientific specimens. Through …
