Occupational Therapy Assistant Preparatory Course To Improve Mock Certification Exam Scores: An Evidenced-Based Intervention, Anderston St. Germain

Journal of Innovation in Health Sciences Education

Abstract

Introduction: The overall goal of educators of occupational therapy is to produce graduates capable of meeting entry-level employment status, which becomes evident when they pass the national certification exam. This evidence-based pilot project investigated an occupational therapy assistant certification exam preparatory course designed to improve mock certification test scores of graduates from an occupational therapy assistant program.

Methods: The project was implemented as a pilot study in the fall of 2017 with six participants. The course was delivered using a face-to-face teaching model and designed based on the most recent evidence from the literature. The course content included …

The Gun Industry And The New Anti-Boycott Laws, Dru Stevenson Jan 2025

The Gun Industry And The New Anti-Boycott Laws, Dru Stevenson

Florida Law Review

Anti-boycott laws are an emerging trend in our legal system, especially in state legislatures. In the last seven years, more than half the states have adopted laws that sanction, in various ways, firms that boycott the nation of Israel. Even more recently, several states have adopted laws that discourage corporations—especially financial institutions—from adopting environment, social, and governance reform policies. In 2021, Texas and Wyoming adopted sweeping laws that punish banks that do not lend to weapons manufacturers and gun dealers after some of the nation’s largest financial institutions had announced plans to stop lending to the firearm industry. A Texas …

Questioning Hearsay's Formalism, Susan E. Provenzano Jan 2025

Questioning Hearsay's Formalism, Susan E. Provenzano

Florida Law Review

The rule against hearsay has a simple premise: a speaker’s out-of-court statement can be inaccurate, misleading, or downright false. This premise is being eroded by a judicial formalism under which second-hand statements now reach the jury unless the statements make assertions in declarative sentences, such as “Sam, I know you sell drugs.” The same belief conveyed by “Sam, do you still have any of those drugs for sale?” is deemed nonhearsay because it is housed in a question. The problem is that this question presents an incriminating presupposition—the speaker’s expressed assumption that Sam is a drug dealer. This belief becomes …

Hitting Back: Methods Of Abolishing Corporal Punishment In The Florida School System, Pressly Pratt Jan 2025

Hitting Back: Methods Of Abolishing Corporal Punishment In The Florida School System, Pressly Pratt

Florida Law Review

The use of corporal punishment against children has fallen more and more out of vogue in the past half-century as research has shown that the practice only harms children. But, despite that research and the growing public distaste for the practice, the use of corporal punishment in schools remains legal in eighteen states, including Florida. A fifty-year-old Supreme Court case, Ingraham v. Wright, upholds the legality of corporal punishment in schools. The Court has not revisited the topic despite changes in public attitudes and research and that it was confronted with the ability to revisit it as recently as …

The Florida-Ucc Filing System Disaster, Lynn M. Lopucki Jan 2025

The Florida-Ucc Filing System Disaster, Lynn M. Lopucki

Florida Law Review

Since the widespread adoption of the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) in the 1960s, the UCC’s name-based filing system has been a constant embarrassment to its drafters. System overhauls in 1998 and 2010 failed to fix it. In Florida, the problem came to a head in 1944 Beach Boulevard, LLC v. Live Oak Banking. Based on a widely shared misunderstanding of how Florida’s unorthodox, privatized UCC filing system worked, the Florida Supreme Court held that the system had no search logic, so the UCC § 9-506(c) safe harbor from debtor name errors did not apply. Instead, a “zero-tolerance” test applied, …

Cognitive Content Moderation: Freedom Of Thought And The First Amendment Right To Receive Subconscious Information, Mason Marks Jan 2025

Cognitive Content Moderation: Freedom Of Thought And The First Amendment Right To Receive Subconscious Information, Mason Marks

Florida Law Review

In the television series Severance, employees of Lumon Industries receive brain implants that divide their memories of work and home life. When employees arrive at work, implants block access to memories of the outside world and unlock memories formed on the job. By manipulating the flow of information in employees’ brains, Lumon engages in what this Article calls cognitive content moderation. Though Severance is science fiction, emerging technologies, including drugs and electronic devices, promote cognitive content moderation by influencing thought, memory, and perception. Constitutional law is unprepared. To clarify freedom of thought and make it more useful, this …

Imperfect Insanity And Diminished Responsibility, E. Lea Johnston Jan 2025

Imperfect Insanity And Diminished Responsibility, E. Lea Johnston

Florida Law Review

Insanity’s status as an all-or-nothing excuse results in the disproportionate punishment of individuals whose mental disorders significantly impaired, but did not obliterate, their capacities for criminal responsibility. Prohibiting the trier of fact from considering impairment that does not meet the narrow definition of insanity contradicts commonly held intuitions about mental abnormality and gradations of responsibility. It results in systemic over-punishment, juror frustration, and, at times, arbitrary verdicts as triers of fact attempt to better apportion liability to blameworthiness. This Article proposes a generic partial excuse: Diminished Responsibility from Mental Disability. This excuse could be asserted as an affirmative defense at …

Structural Transformation And Employment Trends In Jordan, Omar M. Alshrydeh, Taleb M. Warrad Jan 2025

Structural Transformation And Employment Trends In Jordan, Omar M. Alshrydeh, Taleb M. Warrad

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

Historical experience suggests that improving employment and working conditions is not achievable without structural transformations in the economy. Through these transformations, surplus labor in informal sectors and activities can be moved to higher-productivity economic activities. In this research paper, the trends in the relationship between structural transformation and employment in Jordan during the period 1990-2022 were analyzed. The research highlights several key findings from the analysis. First, it identifies long-term equilibrium relationships between structural transformation and employment fluctuations. Secondly, the main research variable total production (LY) is statistically significant in all models, but it varied in terms of magnitude and …

The Clock Is Ticking: Legal Barriers In § 1983 Execution Protocol Challenges, Christian Witte Jan 2025

The Clock Is Ticking: Legal Barriers In § 1983 Execution Protocol Challenges, Christian Witte

Missouri Law Review

At 7:53 p.m. on January 25, 2024, the curtains opened, revealing Kenneth Smith strapped down in the execution room, covered by a white sheet. A respirator mask covered his face, serving as the conduit for nitrogen gas that Smith would soon inhale. The prison warden entered the execution chamber, read Smith’s death warrant, and allowed Smith to share his final words: “Tonight Alabama causes humanity to take a step backwards. I’m leaving with love, peace[,] and light . . . . Love all of you.” Alabama’s Attorney General permitted the warden to continue, signaling no court orders were staying the …

Read But Not Understood? An Empirical Analysis Of Consumer Comprehension In Homeowners Insurance, Daniel Schwarcz, Brenda J. Cude, Kyle D. Logue, German Marquez Alcala Jan 2025

Read But Not Understood? An Empirical Analysis Of Consumer Comprehension In Homeowners Insurance, Daniel Schwarcz, Brenda J. Cude, Kyle D. Logue, German Marquez Alcala

Law & Economics Working Papers

Modern contract law assumes that consumers meaningfully assent to the standard forms that govern their daily lives. However, this assumption is widely regarded as a legal fiction for two key reasons: first, most consumers do not read standard forms, and second, even those who do often struggle to fully comprehend their terms and implications. While the lack of consumer reading has been well-documented through empirical research, consumers’ ability to comprehend standard form contracts has received surprisingly little attention.

This Article addresses the latter issue by empirically examining whether providing excerpts from the dominant standard form homeowners insurance policy improves consumer …

A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis On The Effect Of Nature Exposure Dose On Adults With Mental Illness, Joanna Ellen Bettmann, Elizabeth Speelman, Annelise Jolley, Tallie Casucci Jan 2025

A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis On The Effect Of Nature Exposure Dose On Adults With Mental Illness, Joanna Ellen Bettmann, Elizabeth Speelman, Annelise Jolley, Tallie Casucci

Faculty and Staff Works

Time spent in nature leads to significant physical and mental benefits, but research is mixed on how much time in nature is necessary to affect change in adults' mental health. This meta-analysis aimed to answer the question: what effect does length and interval of nature dosage have on adults with mental illness? The authors defined nature exposure as an experience in nature lasting at least 10 minutes and taking place in an actual natural setting. Because some studies indicated single experiences of exposure to nature (one-time) while others utilized multiple exposures to nature (interval), these studies were separated to determine …

Autonomy And Relatedness: Motivating Kindergarten Teachers In An Online Professional Development, Xuanyi Eliza Wu, Alfredo Bautista, Marc Clarà Jan 2025

Autonomy And Relatedness: Motivating Kindergarten Teachers In An Online Professional Development, Xuanyi Eliza Wu, Alfredo Bautista, Marc Clarà

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Drawing on the self-determination theory, this paper focuses on two factors that are essential for individuals to be motivated, namely the psychological needs of autonomy and relatedness. We implemented three different iterations of an online PD course, entitled Chat with Children. While content was identical, the designs of autonomy and relatedness varied. Participants of this exploratory study were 417 in-service Hong Kong kindergarten teachers. We analyzed teachers’ enrollment, participation, and completion in the three iterations, and also interviewed teachers to explore their experiences of different autonomy and relatedness designs. We found that participation and completion were significantly higher in the …

The Impact Of Interdisciplinary Approach And Mathematical Modelling Activities On Mathematics Teaching: A Case Study With Pre-Service Teachers, Eda N. Güner, Ahmet Ş. Özdemir

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Mathematical modelling is an effective approach that helps students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts by connecting mathematics to real-life contexts and to other disciplines. Model Eliciting Activities (MEAs) are student-centred processes in which learners use modelling methods to solve complex real-world problems. This case study aimed to design interdisciplinary MEAs for pre-service teachers, to evaluate these activities according to modelling principles, and to examine participants’ views after the implementation. The data consisted of the developed MEAs, video transcripts from the implementation process, and audio transcripts of semi-structured interviews. Content analysis, descriptive analysis, and rubric-based evaluation were used. The …

Early Careers Teachers’ Engagement With The Australian Professional Standards For Teachers, Kim Beasy, Michelle Parks, Jeana A. Kriewaldt, Natasha Ziebell Jan 2025

Early Careers Teachers’ Engagement With The Australian Professional Standards For Teachers, Kim Beasy, Michelle Parks, Jeana A. Kriewaldt, Natasha Ziebell

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APSTs) provide a framework for teacher development, yet their integration into early career teachers’ (ECTs) practice varies widely. This study examines the experiences of nine ECTs through two interviews conducted over their first two years in the profession. Findings indicate that while some ECTs engaged with the APSTs as a reflective tool, most interacted with them primarily for compliance, particularly during registration and career progression milestones. School culture significantly influenced engagement, with supportive environments fostering meaningful use, while others lacked guidance or institutional emphasis. This inconsistency raises concerns about equity, as some ECTs are …

Telehealth Vs Clinic Postoperative Visit After Hysterectomy: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Susan D. Wherley, David Sheyn, Hope Bauer, Jeffrey Mangel, Sarah Sears, Linda-Dalal Shiber, Robert Pollard

Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship

Introduction and Hypothesis: Telehealth is becoming more common, but there is a paucity of literature investigating the role of telehealth in perioperative gynecologic care. The authors hypothesized that patients evaluated via telehealth 4 weeks after minimally invasive hysterectomy would not have lower satisfaction than patients evaluated in clinic. Methods: This was a randomized controlled noninferiority trial of patients who underwent minimally invasive hysterectomy at a single academic medical center. Participants were randomized to postoperative clinic visit or telehealth visit 4 weeks after hysterectomy. After the 4-week postoperative visit, patients were sent a satisfaction questionnaire. The primary outcome was overall patient …

Time And Retribution, Meghan J. Ryan Jan 2025

Time And Retribution, Meghan J. Ryan

Missouri Law Review

Time is missing from discussions on the theory of retribution. A colossal body of scholarship has been devoted to exploring the theory of retribution, or “just deserts,” but much less has attempted to translate this theory into practice, explaining how to determine an actual offender’s desert in real life. The limited scholarship on this topic touches on who might best assess an offender’s desert. For example, should a judge, a juror, or the public itself be making these desert decisions? But there is also a temporal aspect to this decision-making that has thus far largely eluded exploration: When should the …

Comparing Two Psychometric Approaches: The Case Of Item Analysis For A Classroom Test In Mathematics, Mark Lester B. Garcia, Kevin Carl P. Santos, Catherine P. Vistro-Yu

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Multiple-choice and constructed-response item formats are widely used in Philippine classrooms where tests are primarily summative. Conducting item analysis provides teachers the professional possibility to independently improve their test items while also allowing them to make informed decisions about test improvement and ensure that their assessments provide meaningful scores. Comparisons of item analysis approaches have been extensively used in standardized tests but not so much in small-scale testing such as classroom assessments. Hence, this research reports an empirical study where a summative test for classroom use is analyzed using psychometric techniques from the Classical Test Theory (CTT) and the Item …
