Neutrosophic-Supported Machine Learning Models For Oral Disease Classification, Ibrahim M. Elezmazy, Doaa El-Shahat

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

This study is presented to investigate the influence of the neutrosophic (NS) domain on the performance of the most common machine learning (ML) models. Specifically, it evaluates the effectiveness of Random Forest (RF), Extra Trees (ET), K-Neighbors (KNN), Gaussian Naive Bayes (GaussianNB), and Decision Tree (DT) classifiers in detecting oral diseases. The NS domain divides any image into three membership components: falsity (), indeterminacy () and truth (), where T denotes the degree to which each pixel in an image is a member of a particular class or category, F denotes the degree to which the pixel is not a …

Immune checkpoint inhibitors can lead to 'exceptional', durable responses in a subset of persons. However, the molecular basis of exceptional response (ER) to immunotherapy in metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (mccRCC) has not been well characterized. Here we analyzed pretherapy genomic and transcriptomic data in treatment-naive persons with mccRCC treated with standard-of-care immunotherapies: (1) combination of programmed cell death protein and ligand 1 (PD1/PDL1) and cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated protein 4 inhibitors (IO/IO) or (2) combination of PD1/PDL1 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor inhibitors (IO/VEGF). In the IO/IO cohort, clonal neoantigen load was significantly higher in persons with …

Heat shock protein 90 (HSP90), a vital chaperone involved in the folding and stabilization of various cellular proteins, regulates key functions in many tumor cells. In the context of gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC), where HSP90's role remains largely unexplored, we aimed to investigate the significance of HSP90 inhibitor, AUY922, in regulating the YAP1/TEAD pathway and its association with the tumor immune microenvironment (TME). Our results showed that AUY922 effectively inhibited GAC aggressiveness in both the invitro and invivo models, induced apoptosis, and cell-cycle arrest. Various functional assays elucidated that AUY922 potently inhibited the expression and interaction among YAP1/TEAD and HSP90, resulting …

Anthracyclines are effective chemotherapeutics used in approximately 60% of pediatric cancer cases but have a well-documented risk of cardiotoxicity. Existing cardiotoxicity risk calculators do not include cardiovascular risk factors present at the time of diagnosis. The goal of this study is to leverage the advanced sensitivity of strain echocardiography to identify pre-existing risk factors for early subclinical cardiac dysfunction among anthracycline-exposed pediatric patients. We identified 115 pediatric patients with cancer who were treated with an anthracycline between 2013 and 2019. Peak longitudinal left ventricular strain was retroactively calculated on 495 surveillance echocardiograms via the TOMTEC AutoSTRAIN software. Cox proportional hazards …

Nadh-Bound Aif Activates The Mitochondrial Chchd4/Mia40 Chaperone By A Substrate-Mimicry Mechanism, Chris A Brosey, Runze Shen, John A Tainer

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Mitochondrial metabolism requires the chaperoned import of disulfide-stabilized proteins via CHCHD4/MIA40 and its enigmatic interaction with oxidoreductase Apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF). By crystallizing human CHCHD4's AIF-interaction domain with an activated AIF dimer, we uncover how NADH allosterically configures AIF to anchor CHCHD4's β-hairpin and histidine-helix motifs to the inner mitochondrial membrane. The structure further reveals a similarity between the AIF-interaction domain and recognition sequences of CHCHD4 substrates. NMR and X-ray scattering (SAXS) solution measurements, mutational analyses, and biochemistry show that the substrate-mimicking AIF-interaction domain shields CHCHD4's redox-sensitive active site. Disrupting this shield critically activates CHCHD4 substrate affinity and chaperone activity. Regulatory-domain …

Constanto Mysterium - A Paradise Of Shifting Constants, Vijay Fafat Jan 2025

Constanto Mysterium - A Paradise Of Shifting Constants, Vijay Fafat

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Mathematicians speak of constants of mathematics. Some of these constants are known to high-heavens. Some remain hidden in the obscurity of erudition. And to be frank, while every real number is a mathematical constant, we don’t know much about most of them (is not the set of transcendental numbers incommensurable without us knowing or understanding very many of them?).

So what elevates some constants above others? Is this elevation just a measure of the ignorance of mathematicians who have explored but a small patch of an infinite quilt, a case of six wise men trumpeting the – well, the trumpet …

Math Is A Tiger And A Pecan, William Cocke Jan 2025

Math Is A Tiger And A Pecan, William Cocke

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Using perfect secrecy and the ability to identify gibberish in a given language, we encode two poems in one. This allows for a single cipherpoem to have multiple plainpoems associated with it. The result is a form of superposition where neither poem is the more correct interpretation than the other.

The poem presented is about two distinct aspects of mathematics: the tiger to be sought after and hunted; or a pecan that we have surrounded but cannot crack open.

What Does Randomization Do?, Michael A. Lewis Jan 2025

What Does Randomization Do?, Michael A. Lewis

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

In the health and social sciences, when it comes to causal inference, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are considered the gold standard. The justification for granting RCTs this status is the claim that random allocation to different treatment groups addresses the problem of confounding variables by ensuring that any differences in observed outcomes across treatment groups can be attributed only to differences in treatment. I contend that this is a misunderstanding of what random allocation does and that once we see where this argument goes wrong, it becomes clear that the difference, concerning causal inference, between a single observational study versus …

Engaging Mathematicians One Step At A Time: Math Trails, Mary L. Dalton, Jennifer Yantz

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Mathematics is present in everything we see and do. Sometimes we look past it, looking for some mathematical mystery when the beauty of mathematics is evident in the most obvious ways. One way to engage students to notice connections to mathematics in these everyday objects and events is to direct them in a guided math trail. A math trail is an activity where participants follow a map or guide to various locations while they are encouraged to take notice of connections to mathematical patterns and concepts in the objects around them. An important benefit is that going on a math …

Chatgpt As A Boundary Object Between In-School And Out-Of-School Mathematical Practices: The Case Of Numeracy Practices, Murad E. Jurdak

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

This article explores the theoretical basis and practical potential of ChatGPT in bridging the gap between school-based and out-of-school mathematical practices. Drawing on Cultural Historical Activity Theory and the concept of boundary objects, we highlight how ChatGPT can serve as a boundary object to connect these two domains. Our analysis of ChatGPT-generated lesson plans designed to align with out-of-school practices reveals that the model had the greatest impact on the social and institutional relations component of the numeracy practices framework [6], while their impact was weakest in the values and beliefs component.

An Unlikely Duo: Injecting Art Projects In The Lower-Division Mathematics Classroom, Douglas T. Pfeffer, Christina Durón Jan 2025

An Unlikely Duo: Injecting Art Projects In The Lower-Division Mathematics Classroom, Douglas T. Pfeffer, Christina Durón

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Too often society has sterilized mathematics to the point that many view it as drab and deplete of aesthetic intrigue---in higher education, this is particularly true of students in the lower-division classroom. In this paper, we propose the use of art projects as a novel way to alter this perspective. Art projects function as a hands-on, active way to invite students to both identify connections between math and various non-mathematical disciplines as well as view math as overall more intriguing, inviting, and interesting. This paper details our implementation and discusses anonymously solicited survey data that highlights our successes.

Teaching Mathematics For Labour Emancipation: An Autoethnography Of A Math Teacher In Mykonos, Dimitris T. Maris, Konstantinos P. Christou

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

A wealthy society does not necessarily ensure a good education for its students, just as it does not guarantee wealth for its workers. In this paper we visit a junior high school mathematics classroom on the Greek island of Mykonos, where a significant number of students are employed. In this context, we explore how a mathematics teacher, inspired by social justice mathematics, can empower students in their work environments. We adopt an autoethnographic approach in our narrative, presenting the process of designing and implementing specific mathematical activities aimed at revealing the issue of labour exploitation in the touristic Greek islands. …

Math Is _______: A Study On Prospective Teachers' Perceptions Of Math And Teaching Math, Kayla Mead, Katherine Baker Jan 2025

Math Is _______: A Study On Prospective Teachers' Perceptions Of Math And Teaching Math, Kayla Mead, Katherine Baker

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

In this project, we examined one cohort of twenty-eight college students and their perceptions of mathematics at the beginning and end of a semester-long mathematics content course for K-8 prospective teachers (PTs). More specifically, our study explored PTs’ perceptions of what mathematics is and what mathematics teaching is, and how and why those perceptions might change over the semester-long mathematics course. PTs’ perceptions were captured through open-ended surveys and follow-up interviews. Our intention was to better understand the reasonings for changes in perceptions during the course to support teacher educators in their work of preparing prospective teachers.

Stem Major Perspectives For Humanizing Undergraduate Mathematics Classes, Kelly Macarthur, Derek Williams, Bryce Hughes Jan 2025

Stem Major Perspectives For Humanizing Undergraduate Mathematics Classes, Kelly Macarthur, Derek Williams, Bryce Hughes

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Using the eight dimensions of the rehumanizing framework [32] by Gutiérrez, built on a sociopolitical foundation, we report on research findings about what Latin* [41], Native American, LGBTQ+ and/or women science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors at two primarily white institutions (PWI) perceive as humanizing in their mathematics courses. In analysis of interviews with twenty students, we found that the core aspects of a humanized learning experience center relationality and a caring classroom environment. We then explore tensions that arose regarding the implementation of one teaching strategy reflecting the Cultures & Theirstories rehumanizing dimension, suggesting that implementation of such …

The modern-day workforce is ever-changing, and so are the required leadership skill sets for employees to be successful in the workplace. University student organizations (USOs) offer students opportunities to develop their leadership skills in preparation for the workforce. The purpose of this research is to conduct an empirical study that uses distributed leadership theory (DLT) as a lens to explore how USOs influence a student's leadership capacity in the workforce. Exploring the various components of DLT (autonomy, accountability, and leadership capacity) using an empirical research method approach is plausible in understanding the unique approach USOs offer students while simultaneously preparing …

An Empirical Assessment Of The Foreseeability Test, Griffin Edwards Jan 2025

An Empirical Assessment Of The Foreseeability Test, Griffin Edwards

Florida Law Review

This Article provides empirical support for the heavily debated role of foreseeability in tort law. In Palsgraf v. Long Island Railroad Co., then-Chief Judge Benjamin Cardozo argued that foreseeability is a necessary requirement to establish duty, while Judge William S. Andrews dissented on the grounds that duty describes the general relationship that exists in society and that foreseeability should be a consideration for proximate cause. Most consider this debate meaningful as dictating that when foreseeability is considered—in duty versus in proximate cause—will determine who considers it—judge versus jury. While conventional thinking suggests that a Cardozo view of duty implies …

Complete Diversity: The Origin Story, Mark Moller Jan 2025

Complete Diversity: The Origin Story, Mark Moller

Florida Law Review

The complete diversity rule is among the most criticized rules in the law of federal jurisdiction. The product of Chief Justice John Marshall’s cryptic decision in Strawbridge v. Curtiss, the rule vests federal diversity jurisdiction only if all adverse parties on a complaint are citizens of different states. Complete diversity protects states’ control of state-law litigation. Yet, the rule is also hard to square with the diversity statutes’ text. As a result, federal jurisdiction mavens have condemned the complete diversity rule as a Marshall invention “out of whole cloth.” This Article offers new historical evidence that proves the critics …

Making Things Worse, Failing To Make Things Better, Dov Waisman Jan 2025

Making Things Worse, Failing To Make Things Better, Dov Waisman

Florida Law Review

This Article presents the first extensive analysis of a question in American tort law that has remained unresolved for nearly a century. When someone voluntarily attempts to protect another person from a pre-existing, independent risk of harm, should they be held liable for negligently failing to make the situation better or should they be held liable only if they negligently make the situation worse? Different courts have answered this question differently. Noting the absence of a clear pattern in the case law, the Second and Third Restatements of Torts both decline to take a definitive position on the issue. I …

A Democratic Restraint On Incarceration, Marah Stith Mcleod Jan 2025

A Democratic Restraint On Incarceration, Marah Stith Mcleod

Florida Law Review

We face a crisis of excessive incarceration. Undeserved punishment violates a bedrock principle of justice, yet criminal defendants are often imprisoned without assurance that their deprivation of liberty and exclusion from society is deserved. Legislatures are under powerful pressures to authorize and even mandate carceral penalties that may exceed individual culpability; prosecutors have strong cost incentives to threaten undeserved penalties to induce guilty pleas, and to pursue those penalties if defendants refuse to plead guilty; and judges face like institutional pressures to sentence defendants more harshly if they insist on trial. This Article proposes a new sentencing model that employs …
