Million-Dollar Mysteries: Recent Complex Patent Cases Lost To Rule 36, Dennis D. Crouch
Faculty Publications
This article examines the Federal Circuit's continued use of Rule 36 summary affirmances to dispose of complex patent cases without written opinions. Through analysis of eight recent Rule 36 cases decided in early 2025, the author demonstrates that sophisticated legal issues involving millions of dollars are being summarily affirmed despite presenting novel and important questions of patent law. The cases discussed involve design patent evidentiary standards, jury trial rights for hybrid legal-equitable claims, analogous art determinations, claim construction, written description requirements, and PTAB procedural issues. The author argues that while the court may be avoiding difficult cases with complex factual …

Two‑Layer Rolling Optimization Operation Strategy Of Household Photovoltaic‑Energy Storage System Under Step‑Peak Valley Tariff Mechanism, Pengfei Liu, Shunfu Lin, Da Xie
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
Distributed photovoltaic (PV) is of great significance to realizing the objectives of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” and establishing a new power system mainly supported by new energy sources. In this study, the optimization operation of the household PV-energy storage system under the present step-peak valley tariff mechanism was investigated. Firstly, the structure of household PV-energy storage system and tariff mechanism were introduced. Secondly, by considering the impact of step-peak valley tariff on users’ energy use strategy on long time scale, a two-layer rolling optimization operation strategy of household PV-energy storage system based on model predictive control (MPC) was proposed, …

Small Signal Modeling And Stability Analysis Of Hybrid Power System With Gfm And Gfl Converters And Synchronous Generator, Bo Xu, Peihong Li, Yin Yao, Hao Chen, Xiaoyan Bian, Dongdong Li
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
A high proportion of new energy is connected to the power system through converters, which reduces the frequency support ability of the power system and affects the synchronization stability of the system. Small signal modeling and stability analysis are presented for a hybrid power system composed of a grid-forming (GFM) converter, a grid-following (GFL) converter, and a synchronous generator. Firstly, small signal modeling is conducted on a hybrid power system composed of a GFM converter controlled by a virtual synchronous generator, a GFL converter based on a phase lock loop (PLL), a synchronous generator, and other components. To verify the …

A Transient Stability Improvement Strategy Of Isolated Power Grids With Grid‑Forming‑Based Renewable Energy Power Generation Units, Ruiping Liu, Liang Yuan, Mingxin Hu, Hua Han, Xubin Liu
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
The grid-forming-based renewable energy power generation units can provide inertial support to isolated power grids, but they face transient stability issues when faults occur. To address this issue, the impact mechanism of the reactive power outer loop of the grid-forming-based renewable energy power generation units on the transient stability of isolated power grids is studied, and corresponding stability improvement strategies are proposed. Firstly, the Lyapunov direct method is employed to explore the stability boundaries of the output-end voltage of the grid-forming-based renewable energy power generation units. Secondly, a comprehensive control strategy with an adaptive droop coefficient based on the stability …

Influence Characteristics Of Insulation Layer Temperature On Partial Discharge Of Xlpe, Yan Li, Guancheng Zhen, Haoyuan Song, Xiaokun Liu, Yuwei Liang, Junjie Qiao, Xinyue Liu, Maotao Wang, Zhigang Zhai
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables are the first choice for urban grid line construction. Insulation defects can lead to partial discharge, which affects the insulation performance of the cables and even leads to insulation breakdown and line tripping. At the same time, the cables undergo constant hot and cold cycles during operation, and the insulation layer temperature affects the partial discharge characteristics of XLPE. In order to study this effect, a pin-to-plane electrode experimental platform is set up to measure partial discharge data of XLPE at different temperatures, and the results show that partial discharge mainly occurs at −10°~100° and 150°~265° …
The Relationship Between Anthropometric Sizing, Fit Issues, And Return Rates In Plus-Size Women's Apparel, Cassondra Smith
The Relationship Between Anthropometric Sizing, Fit Issues, And Return Rates In Plus-Size Women's Apparel, Cassondra Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Retail business owners remain concerned with apparel sizing and return sales, as sizing is a frequent predictor of apparel returns and decreased revenue. Grounded in new product development theory (NPD), the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between anthropometric apparel sizing standards, sizing and fit issues, and return sales. The participants were 89 women’s bridal apparel owners and leaders within the retail business sector who completed a 5-point Likert-type survey. The results of the multiple linear regression were significant, 3, 85) = 32.301, p < .001, R2 = .533. In the final model, there were two predictors which were significant, sizing and fit (t = 9.718, p = <.001, ß = .735) and sizing standards (t = 2.478, p = .01, ß = .205). A key recommendation is for retail business leaders to acknowledge the growth in the U.S. female apparel consumer. Further, the alignment of sizing standards and product offerings provides functional apparel and mitigates return sales due to sizing. The implications for positive social change include the potential for the apparel industry to acknowledge the growing complexity of women’s sizing, which is influenced by diverse cultural backgrounds and body types. This shift could promote greater inclusivity, enhance consumer confidence, reduce return rates, and foster broader acceptance of diverse female body types within the industry.

Stories Of Pastors' Wives, Their Responsibilities, And Their Mental Health, Marsha Patrice Wilson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Church ministry has many written and unwritten rules, responsibilities, and expectations for those who choose to serve in pastoral roles. Some responsibilities and expectations cause church pastors to experience stress and burnout, which has residual effects on their wives and families. Many church leaders or congregations are not aware of or consider the emotional impact of unwritten rules and expectations on the pastors’ wives. The purpose of this narrative research was to explore the stories of Protestant church pastors’ wives and highlight how their various supportive roles in marriage and ministry impacts their emotional and mental health. With a feminist …

Structural, Molecular And Developmental Evidence For Cell-Type Diversity In Cnidarian Mechanosensory Neurons, Julia Baranyk, Kristen Malir, Miguel A.P. Silva, Sakura Rieck, Gracie Scheve, Nagayasu Nakanishi
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Deploying a conserved mechanosensory neuron known as the concentric hair cell, cnidarians have evolved diverse mechanoreceptors from hydroid filiform tentacles to jellyfish statocysts. However, it is unknown whether cnidarian mechanoreceptor evolution has relied solely on repurposing a single ancestral mechanosensory neuron type. Here we report evidence for cell-type diversity of mechanosensory neurons in sea-anemone cnidarian Nematostella vectensis. Uncovered in the ectoderm of feeding tentacles are conventional type I hair cells and previously unrecognized type II hair cells differing in the structure of apical sensory apparatus and synapses. Moreover, we identify TRP channel-encoding gene polycystin-1 as a type-II-hair-cell-specific essential mediator of …

Quantifying emesis in Suncus murinus (S. murinus) has traditionally relied on direct observation or reviewing recorded behaviour, which are laborious, time-consuming processes that are susceptible to operator error. With rapid advancements in deep learning, automated animal behaviour quantification tools with high accuracy have emerged. In this study, we pioneere the use of both three-dimensional convolutional neural networks and self-attention mechanisms to develop the Automatic Emesis Detection (AED) tool for the quantification of emesis in S. murinus, achieving an overall accuracy of 98.92%. Specifically, we use motion-induced emesis videos as training datasets, with validation results demonstrating an accuracy of 99.42% for …

Inspired by the diverse set of technologies used in underground object detection and imaging, we introduce a novel multimodal linear search problem whereby a single searcher starts at the origin and must find a target that can only be detected when the searcher moves through its location using the correct of p possible search modes. The target’s location, its distance d from the origin, and the correct search mode are all initially unknown to the searcher. We prove tight upper and lower bounds on the competitive ratio for this problem. Specifically, we show that when p is odd, the optimal …

Systematic Evaluation Of Regression Models For The Prediction Of Influenza Cases, Mukul Kandwal
Theses
This study systematically evaluates machine learning models to forecast influenza outbreaks, aiming to enhance public health preparedness through accurate predictions. Laboratory-confirmed influenza case data from the New York State Department of Health (2009–2023) were used to train and test five regression models—XGBoost, Neural Network (MLP regressor), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Random Forest, and Support Vector Regression (SVR)—with preprocessing techniques including differencing and phasing. A leave-one-season-out cross-validation framework and Symmetric Mean Absolute Percentage Error (SMAPE) were employed to rigorously assess performance. Key findings reveal that the Neural Network (MLP regressor) outperformed other models, achieving the lowest SMAPE score (23.7), underscoring the critical …

Political Science is not an obviously joyful discipline, and wrestling with injustice in the classroom is not an intuitive way to open the door to joy. But when students and professor alike practice compassion for victims of injustices (such as sexual violence and white supremacy) and for each other, they sometimes find the kind of common ground that allows joy into the room. Treating one another as peers in a community aimed at seeking to understand what justice is and what it feels like, we experience justice as beautiful, shared work that we can practice at a small scale, setting …

Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is a genetic disorder of endosomal protein trafficking associated with pulmonary fibrosis in specific subtypes, including HPS-1 and HPS-2. Single-mutant HPS1 and HPS2 mice display increased fibrotic sensitivity while double-mutant HPS1/2 mice exhibit spontaneous fibrosis with aging, which has been attributed to HPS mutations in alveolar epithelial type II (AT2) cells. We utilized HPS mouse models and human lung tissue to investigate mechanisms of AT2 cell dysfunction driving fibrotic remodeling in HPS. Starting at 8 weeks of age, HPS mice exhibited progressive loss of AT2 cell numbers. HPS AT2 cell function was impaired ex vivo and in …
An Educational Intervention Focused On The Care Of Older Adults, Michele Orzehoski
An Educational Intervention Focused On The Care Of Older Adults, Michele Orzehoski
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
It is estimated that by 2050, individuals ages 65 and older will comprise 20% of the U.S. population. Further, research has demonstrated that among these aging adults, 80% have one chronic condition with 77% having at least two chronic conditions. Given this, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) developed the Age-Friendly Health System framework for the care of older adults centering on what matters, medication, mentation, and mobility, or the 4Ms. In the local organization, leadership determined there was a need for an older adult-centered care model given their population includes aging individuals. Thus, the purpose of this doctor of …

The Perceptions Of Nursing Faculty Who Experience Student Incivility Behavior, Dehlia Abaya Parsons
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Incivility among nursing students is well documented in the academic, clinical, and leadership literature. Student incivility towards faculty was less studied, and merited investigation because incivility can lead to faculty discontentment, stress, and attrition, exacerbating the scarcity of nursing faculty. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study, which was underpinned by the health belief model, was to explore the perceptions of nursing faculty who experience student incivility in the Western region of the United States. Open-ended, semistructured interviews were conducted with 11 nursing faculty who shared perceptions of their experience of student incivility behavior. Open coding and thematic analysis yielded …
