University Faculty Research Competence: A Systematic Literature Review Of Core Components, Distinctions, And Measures, Muhammad Salahuddin, Robert H. Stupnisky

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Recent studies identified that faculty research productivity increased when they felt competent in conducting research. Faculty level of research competency varies due to academic training, context, country, discipline, and experiences; however, what is faculty research competency? The core competencies of faculty research are unclear; thus, the current study systematically reviewed the literature. Researchers used Boolean searches of four popular databases to identify 553 articles for first-level screening. These yielded 46 peer-reviewed journal articles for full-text analysis, six of which focused on faculty populations (40 on non-faculty). Six core components of faculty research proficiency were identified: finding and reviewing literature, planning …

Philip's Mountain, Georgia Maeve Tarr

The Goose

Philip’s Mountain is a collection of poems about the interface between a young woman and a trash laden mountain forest in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. It explores the desire to trace ecological and cultural memory by rummaging through an increasingly impermeable layer of waste.

Trespass To Chattel And The Fourth Amendment, Will Baskin Feb 2025

Trespass To Chattel And The Fourth Amendment, Will Baskin

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

Like an adolescent maturing into adulthood, Fourth Amendment search doctrine has gone through phases. Scholars may debate the underlying principles that have governed each phase, but they agree that two Supreme Court decisions dominate the doctrine as it stands today: Katz v. United States and United States v. Jones. The younger of these two rivals, Jones, has caused its share of consternation. Courts have struggled to consistently apply its trespass-based test, despite the test’s seemingly simple formulation. This Note considers the Jones test in the context of personal property, or chattel, making two arguments: first, careful adherence to common-law principles …

Rising Tides And Shifting Sands: Inadequacies In American Climate Responses And An Urgent Call For A Federal Climate Adaptation Policy, Armand J. Avila Feb 2025

Rising Tides And Shifting Sands: Inadequacies In American Climate Responses And An Urgent Call For A Federal Climate Adaptation Policy, Armand J. Avila

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

Climate change is an increasingly prevalent issue in policy discussions across the United States. Its effects can be observed and measured across ecosystems, industries, and legal jurisdictions, and it is felt in the homes of the people who live and work at the forefront of its impacts. Yet, the federal government’s current policies incentivize states, localities, and private citizens to make poor climate decisions and to put themselves at risk, leading to population growth and property development in some of the most at-risk areas of the country. At the same time, the federal government operates on an outdated disaster response …

A Constructive Trust Is Not Enough - Enacting A Slayer Statute To Better Protect A Decedent’S Heirs, Joseph William Padjune Iii Feb 2025

A Constructive Trust Is Not Enough - Enacting A Slayer Statute To Better Protect A Decedent’S Heirs, Joseph William Padjune Iii

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

This Comment explores how Texas’s common law constructive trust solution used to address the “slayer problem” (the problem that occurs when a person kills an individual they would inherit from) has some substantial limitations and explains how this system would be enhanced by enacting a complementary slayer statute. The current constructive trust doctrine fails to adequately protect a victim’s heirs, is too variable in its application, and creates too much uncertainty. By adopting the slayer statute proposed in this Comment, or one similar, the Texas Legislature can better protect a victim’s estate and their heirs. The overall aim of this …

Transformative Artists: Rebalancing The Fair Use Doctrine, Roberto C. Candelas Feb 2025

Transformative Artists: Rebalancing The Fair Use Doctrine, Roberto C. Candelas

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

Copyright law is intended to increase public access to creative works, and in service of this goal it grants exclusive rights to copyright holders to provide them with the economic incentive to create new works. However, the reality is that creative works are often not only influenced by their predecessors, but often are accretions of previous concepts, stylistic approaches, and ideas that add a creator’s imprimatur and thus create a new work that is tethered to its derivatives in ways that range from tenuous to seemingly duplicative. It is within this zone of ambiguous connection that the doctrine of fair …

A Manifesto To Young Activist Scientists And Science Educators: Toward Pluriversal Sciences And Science Educations Within Bioregions And Communities, James C. Jupp

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

What follows is a manifesto to substantiate four theses. First, science and science education are not what they purport to be and require recategorization as technoscience and technoscience education. Second, technoscience and technoscience education are constituted in the pernicious whiteness of coloniality and need to be understood as mechanisms of domination. Third, pluriversal sciences and science educations toward bioregion and community are emerging and require leveraging. Fourth, the notion of contextual mitigating factors provides an essential analytic for pluriversal sciences and science educations. The manifesto is a clarion call for affinity …

A 47-year-old male with a history of immunosuppression and recent intensive care unit admission presented with progressive orbital swelling and pain. Blood cultures grew Trichosporon asahii and Candida guilliermondii, with matching positive cultures from peripheral and central venous samples. Given his fungemia and worsening orbital involvement, induction therapy with amphotericin B and isavuconazole was initiated. Within weeks, clinical improvement was noted, prompting a transition to long-term consolidation therapy with oral posaconazole and isavuconazole. At follow-up, the patient demonstrated sustained clinical stability with no recurrence of infection. Orbital involvement from fungemia due to T. asahii and C. guilliermondii is rare, and …

Clark Moustakas’ Husserl, Thomas Byrne Feb 2025

Clark Moustakas’ Husserl, Thomas Byrne

The Qualitative Report

This paper critically examines Clark Moustakas’s presentation of Husserl in Phenomenological Research Methods. I argue that Moustakas’s account misrepresents two core elements of Husserl’s phenomenology – intentionality and the transcendental reduction – in ways that directly compromise the foundations of qualitative phenomenological research. First, Moustakas treats intentional meaning as something private, located within the individual, rather than as given in the world. This misreading severs the connection between experience and a shared world of meaning, leaving qualitative researchers unable to clarify participants’ accounts beyond private expression. Second, Moustakas reduces the transcendental reduction to introspective reflection, overlooking its function as a …

Discrimination is a social adversity that is linked to several age-related outcomes. However, the molecular drivers of these observations are poorly understood. Social adverse factors are associated with proinflammatory and interferon gene expression, but little is known about whether additional genes are associated with discrimination among both African American and White adults. In this study, we examined how perceived discrimination in African American and White adults was associated with genome-wide transcriptome differences using RNA sequencing. Perceived discrimination was measured based on responses to self-reported lifetime discrimination and racial discrimination. Differential gene expression and pathway analysis were conducted in a cohort …

Perceived Hbv-Related Stigma Is Associated With Lower Antiviral Medication Adherence In Patients With Chronic Hepatitis B, Hee-Soon Juon, Daniel Yang, Cindy Xin Fang, Hie-Won Hann, Ho Bae, Mimi Chang, Ann C. Klassen

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

Medication nonadherence among patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) can lead to severe liver disease progression, including liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Yet the factors that influence adherence in high-risk groups, like Korean Americans, remain unclear. Thus, this study explored the psychosocial and clinical factors affecting medication adherence in CHB patients. A cohort of 365 Korean American patients with CHB from two clinics in Philadelphia and Los Angeles was studied. The 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) gauged their adherence to antiviral medication. Using descriptive and multivariable logistic regression analyses, we identified factors associated with MMAS-8 scores. Of the …

This study investigates the influence of the age of acquisition (AoA) on the development of lexical attainment and oral proficiency in English as a second language (L2) among adult native Arabic speakers, focusing on classroom foreign language learners within the Egyptian context. AoA, a critical variable in second language acquisition (SLA) research, is explored in relation to two key domains: lexical knowledge and oral proficiency. The study examines the role of AoA and AoA related effects, such as the order of bilingualism and the length of exposure to rich language input (LoE) as a confounding factor. Through a mixed-methods approach, …

Supporting Egypt's Industrial Decarbonization: The Role Of Dfis In Cbam Alignment, Malak Elsaid Feb 2025

Supporting Egypt's Industrial Decarbonization: The Role Of Dfis In Cbam Alignment, Malak Elsaid

Theses and Dissertations

The European Union’s (EU) Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) introduces a new linkage between trade and climate policy by requiring importers to report and pay for embedded emissions. For Egypt, characterized by high trade exposure to the EU through the export of carbon-intensive products, CBAM serves as a regulatory catalyst for industrial transformation, posing significant competitiveness risks. Recent assessments indicate that the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region faces a significant CBAM burden, approximately three times that of other emerging market and developing economies.

Utilizing the Institutional-Capacity Response Model as an analytical tool, this study examines how such external …

Understanding The Accuracy And Best Use Of The Woodland Stick As A Tree Height And Diameter Measurement Tool: A Case Study In Oregon, Francisca Belart, Lauren Grand, Alicia Christiansen

Journal of Extension

We conducted a study to assess the accuracy of the Woodland Stick in determining tree diameter and height as compared to professional measurements and how bias can affect tree volume calculation. After comparing professional measurements with five non-professionals (NP’s) using the Woodland Stick, we found that three out of five NP’s had significant differences in mean dbh, and all of the NP’s had significant differences in mean total height. The overall bias for dbh across users was +0.5 inches and +5.1 ft for height. These deviations can result in volume differences between 0 and 30 bf on a single tree.

Beer And Biology, A Perfect Pairing: Using Beer To Spread Awareness About Invasive Species, Samuel Nutile, Adam Simpson, Sara Stahlman, Lynne E. Beaty

Journal of Extension

Managing the spread of introduced invasive species relies on educating recreationists that currently or potentially harbor such species. By partnering with a local brewery, we developed the Lagers for Lakes Draft Series to facilitate outreach about aquatic invasive species in Erie, Pennsylvania. To date, Lagers for Lakes drafts and associated launch events have reached over 230 individuals and increased awareness of invasive species by 86%. With the materials provided here and the lessons learned from these events, we hope similar outreach efforts can be developed elsewhere to educate and minimize the spread of invasive species.

Background: Cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitors (CDK4/6is) in combination with endocrine therapy are the standard treatment for patients with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer (mBC). Despite the efficacy of CDK4/6is, intrinsic resistance occurs in approximately one-third of patients, highlighting the need for reliable predictive biomarkers.

Methods: Single-cell RNA sequencing analyzed metastatic tumors from HR+/HER2- mBC patients pre-CDK4/6i treatment at baseline (BL) and/or at disease progression. BL samples were from CDK4/6i responders (median progression-free survival [mPFS] = 25.5 months), while progressors were categorized as early-progressors (EP, mPFS = 3 months) and late-progressors (LP, mPFS = 11 months). Metastatic sites included liver, …

Returning To The Beginning Place: Le Guin’S Forgotten Anti-Fantasy Four Decades On, Timothy S. Miller

UKL: The Journal of Ursula K. Le Guin Studies

Ursula K. Le Guin's 1980 portal fantasy The Beginning Place has received a fraction of the critical attention that most of her other novels have attracted over the years. This short book's many enigmas, often structured by self-consciously Jungian symbolism, are best understood as operating in service not to a strict Jungian framework, but rather to a broader metafictional evaluation of fantasy and an articulation of Le Guin's own preferred approach to the reading and interpretation of fantasy. At times, The Beginning Place moves beyond meta-fantasy to become an anti-fantasy that does not shy from critiquing some dimensions of both …

The Power Of Choice: Comparing Asynchronous And Synchronous Learning, Heidi L. Henry, Kayla Newkirk, Lauren Guggenberger

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Using explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, we investigated counseling student outcomes and attitudes in asynchronous versus synchronous learning modalities. We studied whether asynchronous or synchronous learning contributed to differences in student outcomes on a final project in an Advanced Human Growth and Development course. Using a Kruskal-Wallis H test, we found no significant differences on final project scores among groups categorized according to the number of asynchronous and synchronous activities completed. We also explored the attitudes of online counseling students towards synchronous and asynchronous learning. Thematic analysis of open-ended surveys of 53 counseling students revealed four themes: enhanced learning experiences, advantages …

Bystanders To Bias: Witnessing Gendered Microaggressions Affects Men's And Women's Outcomes In Stem Small Group Contexts, Nadia Vossoughi, Logan C. Burley, Ryan P. Foley, Lorelle A. Meadows, Denise Sekaquaptewa

Michigan Tech Publications

We tested whether merely witnessing gendered microaggressions affects group work experiences among male and female undergraduate computer science and engineering students. Across three experiments (N = 753), we randomly assigned computer science and engineering students to witness microaggressions targeting female students, or control interactions, using a video manipulation. Witnessing microaggressions-compared to the control-resulted in heightened gender-specific stereotyping concerns, with women being concerned about appearing incompetent and men being concerned with appearing sexist. For both women and men, witnessing microaggressions resulted in decreased enthusiasm for participating in group work. Moreover, for women, the relationship between decreased enthusiasm and witnessing microaggressions was …

Adapting Biological Mechanisms Into Machine Learning Structures And Gradient Propagation, Hao Yu

Theses and Dissertations

As neuromorphic computing gains traction, researchers look for learning schemes that are more suitable for brain-like structures. Although many algorithms have been discovered, such as surrogate gradient or Spike Timing Dependent Plasticity, those algorithms are either unsuitable for on-chip training or not biologically aligned. The goal of this thesis is to discover a learning algorithm which is biologically aligned and suitable for on-chip training. Through the discoveries of our two papers, we are able to introduce the concepts of synaptic clefts and neurotransmitters into a common spiking neuron network. We also designed an error propagation method aligning with biology. With …

Lead-208 is the heaviest known doubly magic nucleus and its structure is therefore of special interest. Despite this magicity, which acts to provide a strong restorative force toward sphericity, it is known to exhibit both strong octupole correlations and some of the strongest quadrupole collectivity observed in doubly magic systems. In this Letter, we employ state-of-the-art experimental equipment to conclusively demonstrate, through four Coulomb-excitation measurements, the presence of a large, negative, spectroscopic quadrupole moment for both the vibrational octupole 31- and quadrupole 21+ state, indicative of a preference for prolate deformation of the states. The observed quadrupole moment is discussed …
