Mitochondrial Dysfunction Is A Hallmark Of Woody Breast Myopathy In Broiler Chickens, Elizabeth S. Greene, Paula R. Chen, Carrie Walk, Mike Bedford, Sami Dridi

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The woody breast (WB) myopathy poses significant economic and welfare concerns to the poultry industry, however, there is no effective strategy to mitigate this pathology due to its unknown etiology. After showing previously that hypoxia is a key factor in WB progression, we used here various techniques demonstrating dysregulated mitochondria (morphology, biogenesis, tethering, function, and bioenergetics) in WB-affected muscles and in hypoxic myoblasts compared to healthy tissues and normoxic cells, respectively. The increased levels of calcium (Ca2+) in both WB-affected tissues and hypoxic myoblasts suggested that mitochondrial Ca2+ overload is likely a leading cause for mitochondrial dysfunction that merits further …

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a significant global health issue that impacts mainly middle-aged women, severely affecting their quality of life. Emerging research highlights the urinary microbiome's complex role in the etiology and management of UI, with microbial dysbiosis potentially influencing symptom severity and treatment outcomes. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the current evidence on the urinary microbiome's role in diagnosing and managing UI, focusing on variations in microbial composition across UI subtypes. We identified 21 studies, mostly employing 16S rRNA sequencing to characterize urinary microbiota and their associations with various UI subtypes, including urgency urinary incontinence (UUI), overactive bladder …

The Unfolding Story Of Protein Misfolding Causing Alzheimer Disease In Recipients Of Human Pituitary Growth Hormone, Evan G. Graber, Sayed M. Hadi Hosseini, Darrell M. Wilson, Alan D. Rogol

Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases Faculty Papers

Human growth hormone (hGH) has been in clinical use for children with GH deficiency (GHD) since the late 1950s. The original formulations were considered very safe with few adverse events reported. That changed remarkably in 1985 when the first patients with GHD, who had been treated with cadaveric hGH, were diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Fortunately, that same year a robust supply of recombinant hGH was released to the market whose adverse event profile did not include CJD. Patients who had received National Hormone and Pituitary Program hGH have been continuously followed since 1985. It is clear that prions are …

Development Of An Evidence-Based Program To Increase Burnout Knowledge Among Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners In An Inpatient Psychiatric Hospital, Christianah Agunanne Feb 2025

Development Of An Evidence-Based Program To Increase Burnout Knowledge Among Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners In An Inpatient Psychiatric Hospital, Christianah Agunanne

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In this staff education project, I addressed burnout prevention among psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) in an inpatient psychiatric hospital. Burnout can cause strain on mental health nurses and reduce patient satisfaction, impair quality of care, and increase medical errors. In this project, I developed and applied an evidence-based program (EBP) on burnout for PMHNPs, educating them about the problem and helping identify, avoid, or at least prevent burnout symptoms. I addressed how an EBP staff education program could affect knowledge and recognition of burnout for PMHNPs working in an inpatient psychiatric hospital. The purpose of the project was …

The Lymph Trial: Comparing Microsurgical With Conservative Treatment For Chronic Breast Cancer-Associated Lymphoedema - Study Protocol Of A Pragmatic Randomised International Multicentre Superiority Trial, Elisabeth A Kappos, Justin M Sacks, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

INTRODUCTION: Up to one-fifth of breast cancer survivors will develop chronic breast cancer-related lymphoedema (BCRL). To date, complex physical decongestion therapy (CDT) is the gold standard of treatment. However, it is mainly symptomatic and often ineffective in preventing BCRL progression. Lymphovenous anastomosis (LVA) and vascularised lymph node transfer (VLNT) are microsurgical techniques that aim to restore lymphatic drainage. This international randomised trial aims to evaluate advantages of microsurgical interventions plus CDT versus CDT alone for BCRL treatment.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The effectiveness of LVA and/or VLNT in combination with CDT, which may be combined with liposuction, versus CDT alone will …

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a multidimensional trait associated with substance use disorders (SUDs), but the relationship between distinct impulsivity facets and stages of substance use involvement remains unclear.

METHODS: We used genomic structural equation modeling and genome-wide association studies (

RESULTS: We found that the SU and SUD factors were strongly genetically inter-correlated (

CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show that specific impulsivity facets confer risk for distinct stages of substance use involvement, with potential implications for SUDs prevention and treatment.

Black Box Emoji Fix – A Unicode Sanitization Method For Mitigating Emoji-Based Injection Attacks In Llm Systems, Renee Gagnon

Defensive Publications Series

The rapid adoption of Large Language Models (LLMs) in various applications—from natural language processing and content moderation to cybersecurity—has inadvertently exposed these systems to sophisticated Unicode-based attacks. One such vulnerability involves the exploitation of emojis and invisible Unicode characters to bypass content filters, trigger token explosion attacks, and ultimately compromise system integrity. The Black Box Emoji Fix presents a robust, defensive method designed to sanitize Unicode text inputs and mitigate these emerging security threats. This publication details the innovative approach developed by Renee M. Gagnon, which integrates comprehensive Unicode normalization, grapheme cluster analysis, and multilayer filtering techniques to secure LLM …

The Role Of Criminal Policy In Iraq In Protecting And Improving The Environment, Marwa Hassan Laibi, Israa Saeed Al Saadi

Imam Ja'afar Al-Sadiq University Journal of Legal Studies

The universe forms with all its elements a coherent and parallel unit. Every imbalance in this delicate balance leads to endangering life on the earth. Until the last century, human activities were among the natural factors that bring about slow changes in the surrounding environment. However, the dawn of the industrial revolution, the increase in population, the growth of agricultural and industrial investments, technological progress and the wasteful exploitation of natural resources, all of this caused damage to the environment and posed a danger that cannot be underestimated, in which the balance of the natural and human elements that make …

It is known that there are different legal principles that must be respected by the parties to the contract, because they constitute a law of the contract, and are represented in the principle of binding force, and the principle of relative effect, as the contractual obligations arising correctly take the place of the law, where they must be respected by the parties to the contract, not Cancellation or modification except with the consent of the parties, and since the assignment of the contract makes the transferor outside the contractual stage where a third party replaces him in the contractual bond …

Rough Draft Math For Engaged Learning, Liza Bondurant, Amanda Jansen Feb 2025

Rough Draft Math For Engaged Learning, Liza Bondurant, Amanda Jansen

CoE Publications

Mathematics educators often face the challenge of students disliking mathematics or experiencing a negative relationship with the subject. Intentional teaching practices can be a mechanism to mitigate this challenge; thus, preservice and novice teachers would benefit from opportunities to develop such teaching practices. This research explored the potential of rough draft math (RDM) to support teachers in addressing these issues. RDM is a pedagogical approach where students discuss and share their preliminary mathematical ideas without the fear of being wrong. Teachers welcome rough draft thinking, which gives students explicit opportunities to review their work or thinking. This study examined the …

Does Bank Expansion Reduce Domestic Violence? Causal Evidence From India, Rikhia Bhukta, Chandan Kumar Jha, Rikhia Bhukta, Ashish K. Sedai K. Sedai

Economics Faculty Works

Multiple studies have shown that dowry payments are among the main causes of domestic violence in developing countries. This paper studies the effects of banking expansion on dowry payments and domestic violence in India. Using a fuzzy regression discontinuity design, we present robust evidence that financial inclusion brought about by banking expansion reduces dowry-related deaths and cruelty by husbands. We propose two primary mechanisms underlying this relationship. First, banking expansion enhances the ability of the bride's family to make higher cash payments and more wedding gifts to the groom's family at the time of marriage, often known as dowry. Second, …

The Effect Of Education Policy On Crime: An Intergenerational Perspective, Ulrika Ahrsjö, Costas Meghir, Mårten Palme, Marieke Schnabel Feb 2025

The Effect Of Education Policy On Crime: An Intergenerational Perspective, Ulrika Ahrsjö, Costas Meghir, Mårten Palme, Marieke Schnabel

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study the intergenerational effect of education policy on crime. We use Swedish administrative data that links outcomes across generations with crime records, and we show that the comprehensive school reform, gradually implemented between 1949 and 1962, reduced conviction rates both for the generation directly affected by the reform and for their sons. The reduction in conviction rates occurred in many types of crime. The key mediators of this reduction in child generation are an increase in education and household income and a decrease in crime among their fathers.

Survival Against The Odds: Successful Treatment Of Incomplete Traumatic Hemipelvectomy In A 29-Year-Old Woman Following A Boating Accident, Max Smith, Joseph R. Lewis, Taryn Bolling, Scott Brick, Patrick Leach

Student Publications

Traumatic hemipelvectomy (THP) is a rare, life-threatening injury characterized by the dislocation of the hemipelvis, often resulting from high-energy trauma. It carries a high mortality risk due to severe vascular injuries, with survival contingent on rapid hemorrhage control and a multidisciplinary approach. Limb salvage is rarely achievable due to the extent of the injury and complications such as infection and tissue nonviability. We present a case of incomplete THP in a 29-year-old woman who sustained severe soft tissue, bony, and vascular injuries following a boating accident. On arrival, the patient was in critical condition with a massive hemorrhage, requiring immediate …

Freshwater Mussels Of Kansas: Register Of Taxa, Synonyms, And Assumed Misidentifications, Mark E. Eberle

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The literature on freshwater mussels (Mollusca: Margaritiferidae and Unionidae) of Kansas includes a collection of names of species and subspecies that makes it difficult for even experienced malacologists to decipher which taxa actually were collected. Compounding this problem is the absence of voucher specimens for some of the studies conducted in the state. This list was compiled to aid those who are conducting research and want to assess their results with reference to the earlier accounts. The alphabetical list of valid taxa, synonyms, and assumed misidentifications of freshwater mussels of Kansas is drawn from the literature and not an examination …
