Neuroactive Metabolite Assessment Of Gaba-Producing Probiotics For Healthy Aging, Sanaly Nava, Dishant Aggarwal, Samjhana Pradhan, Ken Aho, Cynthia Blanton, Javier Ochoa-Repáraz, Kavita Sharma

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Aging is a gradual process of weakening bodily function that leads to decline in physical, cognitive and behavioral abilities. Gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA), a major neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, is produced by both neurons and gut bacteria, and plays a crucial role in numerous physiological functions. Notably, aging is associated with a decline in GABA production and alterations in gut microbiota. Therefore, restoring GABA production by correcting dysbiosis presents a potential strategy for managing age-related functional decline. To better understand how to support healthy aging, our study investigates the gut-brain axis and the potential of genetically modified GABA-producing …

The Tagmatized Echinoderm, Richard L. Turner Jul 2026

The Tagmatized Echinoderm, Richard L. Turner

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Synopsis Tagmosis is a derived condition of metamerism in annelids, arthropods, and chordates in which groups of adjacent segments are modified to perform specific functions. Examples are the clitellum of earthworms, the carapace of lobsters, and the sacrum of tetrapods, to mention a few. The argument is advanced here that examples of tagmosis are not hard to find among echinoderms, a fourth major group of metameric animals; but the degree of tagmosis is weak in most cases. The first few segments of the axial skeleton are often conjoined as a perioral tagma (e.g., the jaws and other parts of the …

Bar-And-Hinge Model For Elasto-Plastic Origami Analysis, Yansong Tang, Yeqi Chu, Yue Mei, Yi Zhu, Ke Liu

Michigan Tech Publications

Origami-inspired structures are attracting considerable attention in engineering owing to their ability to facilitate intricate deformations and deployable configurations. However, accurately simulating their mechanical behaviour under realistic conditions involving permanent deformations and energy dissipation remains a significant challenge. In this study, we present an elasto-plastic formulation based on the nonlinear bar-and-hinge model for non-rigid origami simulation. We integrate rate-independent elasto-plastic constitutive models for both the hinges and the bars, enabling tunable representation of both elastic and plastic deformations in origami structures. The formulation employs a return mapping algorithm to ensure consistency with yield conditions checked at each incremental time step, …

Investigating H-Alpha Variability In Classical Be Stars: Β Lyr, 59 Cyg, And Γ Cas, Vinny Barnes, Josh Uriu, James Dull Jul 2026

Investigating H-Alpha Variability In Classical Be Stars: Β Lyr, 59 Cyg, And Γ Cas, Vinny Barnes, Josh Uriu, James Dull

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Classical Be stars are hot, luminous B-type stars characterized by hydrogen emission lines in their spectra. Among the most rapidly rotating stars known, they spin at 70-80% of their critical velocity, ejecting material into a circumstellar disk that produces these spectral features. Depending on viewing orientation, this can appear as either strong emission or sharp absorption lines. Be star variability arises from several sources, including disk instabilities, extreme rotation, and gravitational interactions with binary companions. To better understand this variability—and more broadly, hot star evolution—we obtained high-resolution H-alpha spectra of three known variable Be stars: 59 Cyg, OT Gem, and …

A Reduced-Order Framework For Stochastic Criticality Estimation In Granular Energetic Materials, Philip T. Melton Jul 2026

A Reduced-Order Framework For Stochastic Criticality Estimation In Granular Energetic Materials, Philip T. Melton

LSU Master's Theses

Granular energetic materials (EMs) exhibit stochastic shock initiation because pore collapse, frictional dissipation, and localized thermal activation depend on microstructural descriptors that vary between nominally identical samples. Fully resolved mesoscale and atomistic calculations can represent these mechanisms, but their computational cost limits direct ensemble evaluation of microstructure-conditioned criticality thresholds. This thesis introduces a reduced-order framework for stochastic criticality estimation in granular EMs by coupling five explicitly defined model components: first, a one-dimensional steady compaction-shock model that maps initial solid volume fraction and shock pressure to a bulk mass-specific dissipated-work budget; second, an SEM/synthetic-image segmentation workflow that extracts pore area, perimeter, …

Tau Seeds Induce Neurofibrillary Tangle Formation Across Brain Regions Via Individual-Specific Connectivity, Audrey J Weber, Bernard Ng, Kelsey M Greathouse, David A Bennett, Shinya Tasaki, Chris Gaiteri, Jeremy H Herskowitz

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The spread of tau pathology across the cerebral cortex is closely tied to cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD). To investigate mechanisms underlying tau spread, we measured bioactivity of tau seeds from inferior temporal gyrus (ITG) and superior frontal gyrus (SFG) synaptosomes in 128 individuals and demonstrated that tau seed bioactivity associates with tau phosphorylation, neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), and cognitive impairment. Incorporating genotype data from the same individuals within a Mendelian randomization framework showed that tau seeds in ITG induce NFTs locally as well as drive tau seeds and NFTs in SFG. Integrating antemortem functional magnetic resonance imaging data from …

Distributed Computation Of Graph Structures By Mobile Agents, Prabhat Kumar Chand Jul 2026

Distributed Computation Of Graph Structures By Mobile Agents, Prabhat Kumar Chand

Doctoral Theses

This thesis investigates how mobile agents with no centralised control can be employed in anonymous networks to perform efficient distributed graph computations. The network is modelled as a simple, undirected, anonymous graph with n nodes and m edges, where nodes are memoryless and indistinguishable, and edges represent bidirectional communication links or traversal paths for the agents. The mobile agents are uniquely identifiable, possess limited local memory, and operate under a local communication model, in which communication is restricted to agents colocated at the same node. Under this computational model, we explore how mobile agents can collaborate effectively to solve global …

Design And Development Of A Novel Lxrβ/Pparδ Dual Agonist For Memory Impairment And Pathology In 3xtg-Ad Animal Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Meenakshi Singh, Ian Steinke, Vishnu Suppiramaniam Jul 2026

Design And Development Of A Novel Lxrβ/Pparδ Dual Agonist For Memory Impairment And Pathology In 3xtg-Ad Animal Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Meenakshi Singh, Ian Steinke, Vishnu Suppiramaniam

Faculty Articles

The rising prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) underscores an urgent need for neuroprotective strategies that modulate cholesterol metabolism, neuroinflammation, improve pathology, and cognitive function. While Liver X receptors (LXRs) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are validated targets for enhancing amyloid-β and tau clearance, clinical translation of first-generation LXR agonists has been hindered by LXRα-mediated hepatic steatosis and hypertriglyceridemia. Here, we report the structure-based design of AU403, a potent, isoform-selective LXRβ/PPARδ dual agonist designed to bypass LXRα-driven hepatotoxicity. Molecular modeling indicates that AU403 achieves LXRβ selectivity by engaging residues Phe329 and Leu330 while avoiding the corresponding LXRα residues Arg305 and Leu316. …

Nurse Staffing Variation Viewed Through The Lens Of Institutional Isomorphism, Mara Raggi Jul 2026

Nurse Staffing Variation Viewed Through The Lens Of Institutional Isomorphism, Mara Raggi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Nurse staffing is strongly associated with organizational and patient quality outcomes. Existing studies have not adequately explained why nurse staffing levels vary across hospitals operating under similar external institutional isomorphic pressures. Secondary and administrative datasets, along with random-effects regression models, were used to analyze 6 years of data (2014-2019) and examine the relationship between institutional factors and hospital nurse staffing in the general acute care setting. The results indicate that coercive factors of state laws were significantly associated with nurse staffing. Staffing mandates and staffing committees were significantly associated with increases in nurse staffing, while public reporting was significantly associated …

Critical Assessment On Challenges And Advances In Coal Pillar Strength Estimation Techniques: A Focus On Geological Discontinuities, Abhishek Kumar Singh, Sahendra Ram

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Accurate estimation of coal pillar strength is essential for ensuring safety and operational efficiency in underground mining. Current assessment methods often face limitations in addressing time-dependent failure mechanisms, geological discontinuities, and dynamic loading conditions. This paper identifies future research directions aimed at enhancing the reliability of pillar strength evaluations. One important focus is the development of advanced numerical models that account for time-dependent behaviours such as creep and fatigue. Incorporating multi-scale modelling techniques, which connect micro-scale material responses to macro-scale structural performance, may lead to more precise predictions. The integration of real-time monitoring systems measuring stress, deformation, and environmental factors …
