Trustworthy Autonomy Through Robust Control And Alignment, Junlin Wu May 2025

Trustworthy Autonomy Through Robust Control And Alignment, Junlin Wu

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

As artificial intelligence systems are increasingly applied in safety critical domains such as robotics, autonomous driving, and decision making under uncertainty, ensuring their trustworthiness has become a central challenge. This dissertation addresses two major facets of trustworthy AI: reliable control through formal guarantees and alignment against adversarial manipulation. The first part of the dissertation focuses on provably stable, robust, and safe control for nonlinear systems using learning based methods. We introduce the first general framework for synthesizing neural Lyapunov controllers in discrete time systems. This method combines a sound verifier based on mixed integer linear programming with gradient based counterexample …

Understanding And Mitigating Timing Issues In Autonomous Systems, Ao Li May 2025

Understanding And Mitigating Timing Issues In Autonomous Systems, Ao Li

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Autonomous systems, such as self-driving cars and drones, have become a part of our daily lives. Since these systems operate in and interact with the physical world, their correctness depends on both functional and temporal aspects. However, the increasing complexity of modern computing hardware and software often leads to unpredictable timing behavior in these systems, making temporal properties particularly challenging to ensure. This dissertation proposes novel approaches to specify and enforce temporal properties based on a comprehensive empirical study of real-world issues. The first half of this dissertation presents an empirical study that dissects the timing issues. The dissection begins …

Let E/Q be an elliptic curve and let p be an odd prime of good reduction for E. Let K be an imaginary quadratic field satisfying the classical Heegner hypothesis and in which p splits. The goal of this paper is two-fold: (1) we formulate a p-adic BSD conjecture for the p-adic L-function LBDP p introduced by Bertolini–Darmon–Prasanna [Duke Math. J. 162 (2013), pp. 1033–1148]; and (2) for an algebraic analogue F BDP p of LBDP p , we show that the “leading coefficient” part of our conjecture holds, and that the “order of vanishing” part follows from the expected …

High-Throughput Echocardiography-Guided Induction Of Myocardial Ischemia/Reperfusion In Mice, Florian Sicklinger, Niklas Hartmann, Attila Kovacs, Carla Weinheimer, Jess Nigro, Junedh M. Amrute, Kory J. Lavine, Et Al. May 2025

High-Throughput Echocardiography-Guided Induction Of Myocardial Ischemia/Reperfusion In Mice, Florian Sicklinger, Niklas Hartmann, Attila Kovacs, Carla Weinheimer, Jess Nigro, Junedh M. Amrute, Kory J. Lavine, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Mouse models of myocardial ischemia with subsequent heart failure are common approaches to examine heart failure pathology and possible treatment strategies. We sought to establish a high-throughput approach for echocardiography-guided induction of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (IR) in mice.

METHODS: After visualization of the left coronary artery with high-resolution ultrasound imaging and echocardiographic definition of the level of coronary occlusion, the left anterior descending artery was temporarily occluded with 2 micromanipulator-controlled needles. Functional and molecular changes were assessed and compared with commonly performed surgical techniques.

RESULTS: Echocardiography-guided induction of myocardial IR enabled standardized induction of myocardial IR injury with subsequent left …

Biomarkers That Could Explain Parasite-Induced Behavioral Alterations In The Golden Shiner (Notemigonus Crysoleucas) – Posthodiplostomum System, Laura D. Nicolas May 2025

Biomarkers That Could Explain Parasite-Induced Behavioral Alterations In The Golden Shiner (Notemigonus Crysoleucas) – Posthodiplostomum System, Laura D. Nicolas

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Trophically transmitted parasites require an intermediate host to be consumed and often manipulate host phenotype (i.e., morphology, physiology, and/or behavior) to increase predation risk by definitive hosts. Posthodiplostomum is a trematode with a complex life cycle involving snails as first hosts, fish as second intermediate hosts, and piscivorous birds as definitive hosts. In fish hosts, Posthodiplostomum infection has been linked to increased predation, suggesting suppression of antipredator behaviors. However, the specific physiological pathways remained unexplored and changes in the host’s neural, endocrine, and immune systems could be involved. Thus, I examined whether Posthodiplostomum infection intensity was associated with brain serotonin …

Restoring Context: Interdisciplinary Approaches To Art Conservation And Registration Challenges In Rural Museums, Jade Karas '25 May 2025

Restoring Context: Interdisciplinary Approaches To Art Conservation And Registration Challenges In Rural Museums, Jade Karas '25

Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium

A prevalent issue for museums in rural areas is a lack of reliable registration methods. This occurs for a number of reasons whether it be a lack of resources (human, financial, spacial, etc.) or the erosion of knowledge overtime due to cultural reliance on generational knowledge. Additionally, different registrars often develop new methods for inventory without leaving behind instructions, leading subsequent registrars to devise their own methods. These gaps in the registration process frequently result in “registration problems”, objects that don’t get properly inventoried and thus have little to no context for their origins. This thesis aims to fill in …

Accelerating Early-Stage Robot Navigation Development With Motion Capture And Ros, Daniel Granda, Vladimir Gunichev, Caleb Sanchez, James Vanzwieten, Yufei Tang, Pratik Mukherjee May 2025

Accelerating Early-Stage Robot Navigation Development With Motion Capture And Ros, Daniel Granda, Vladimir Gunichev, Caleb Sanchez, James Vanzwieten, Yufei Tang, Pratik Mukherjee

Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics

Developing and testing navigation controllers for mobile robots often involves significant challenges related to onboard sensor limitations and the complexities of sensor fusion. Inaccurate or noisy localization data can obscure the true performance of a control algorithm, and sensor integration represents a time-consuming aspect of robotics projects. This paper presents a framework utilizing an external motion capture (MoCap) system integrated with the Robot Operating System (ROS) to provide high-fidelity, ground-truth localization for a Clearpath Husky robot. We detail the system architecture, including custom ROS tools for waypoint collection and navigation. By decoupling controller development from onboard sensor challenges, this framework …

Optical Thickness Determination Of Graphene By Color, Caleb A. Woodcock, Michael S. Crosser May 2025

Optical Thickness Determination Of Graphene By Color, Caleb A. Woodcock, Michael S. Crosser

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

Graphene, and multi-layered graphene, are single atomic layers of carbon, with remarkable electrical properties. This makes it a highly valuable material across scientific and technological fields. Accurate thickness determination is essential, as many of the electrical properties are layer dependent; however, typical methods are slow. This thesis investigates a non-invasive optical method for estimating graphene thickness by correlating RGB color values from microscope images with step height measurements obtained via atomic force microscopy (AFM). Graphene flakes were exfoliated onto a SiO₂/Si substrate, imaged under white light illumination, and analyzed using ImageJ to extract color values. Results show that red-channel contrast …

“The Best Storyteller In The World:” Gwydion, Court Poetry, And Statecraft In The Fourth Branch Of The Mabinogi, Abigail Fathauer '25 May 2025

“The Best Storyteller In The World:” Gwydion, Court Poetry, And Statecraft In The Fourth Branch Of The Mabinogi, Abigail Fathauer '25

Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium

Gwydion, the trickster protagonist of The Mabinogi, orchestrates the plot and manipulates those around him. His trickery ultimately results in political shifts, changes, and even wars, reflecting his role as a powerful player in the text. Moreover, Gwydion's use of poetry, knowledge, and words to enact his schemes and manipulations reflects the power of poets in medieval Welsh courts. My thesis argues that Gwydion's use of poetry to manipulate the politics around him reflects the power of poetry to craft nation states, as medieval Welsh poets did.

Just War, Pacifism, And Inevitability Of Conflict: Tolkien’S Changing Attitudes To War, Alexander Retakh May 2025

Just War, Pacifism, And Inevitability Of Conflict: Tolkien’S Changing Attitudes To War, Alexander Retakh

Journal of Tolkien Research

Tolkien’s approach to war is often considered through the lens of “just war” theory. Its main principles are the necessity of a just cause for war, proper conduct in battle, and the use of proper weapons; if possible, war should be avoided. The Lord of the Rings suggests an ethical framework inspired by this theory; however, the earlier Legendarium is more accepting of military conflicts and their harsh reality. Tolkien's attitude to war appears to shift in the mid-late 1930s, the time of intense debates about just war and pacifism among British Catholics. This paper discusses the evolution of his …

State Right To Appeal: Has Maine Been Too Cautious?, David J. Corson May 2025

State Right To Appeal: Has Maine Been Too Cautious?, David J. Corson

Maine Law Review

The Legislature of the State of Maine recently passed an act relating to appeals by the State on questions of law in criminal cases. The Governor's approval of the act on January 29, 1968, was the culmination of some three years of research and debate. The purpose of this comment is to examine the form and scope of the act in light of the continuing controversy in other jurisdictions over the conflict of interests between the people and the accused in what may be characterized as a trend toward more comprehensive state appeal laws, to the end of concluding whether …

How Post Is Post-Conviction Relief In Maine?, Charles L. Cragin Iii

Maine Law Review

In a recent case the Maine Supreme Judicial Court delineated the prerequisites for relief under Maine's post-conviction relief statute. The court declared that actual or constructive custody is necessary for relief. In Thoresen v. State, petitioner was convicted of a felony in Maine in 1959. He had been represented by retained counsel, and had elected to plead guilty to an information charging him with grand larceny. His sentence was suspended by probation and he was permitted to leave the state. Formally complying with all the regulations of his probation, he was given a total discharge in 1961. In 1967, he …

The Coast Guard: Always Ready, Sometimes Careful, Edward D. Leonard Iii May 2025

The Coast Guard: Always Ready, Sometimes Careful, Edward D. Leonard Iii

Maine Law Review

The government presently is liable for the negligent conduct of the Coast Guard. Why and how such liability arises is the subject of this comment. In considering this subject three central questions are presented: First, whether the various acts abrogating the sovereign immunity of the federal government have been correctly applied to the Coast Guard; second, assuming that sovereign immunity has been waived, the extent of the duty owed by the Coast Guard to persons in distress; and third, after a finding of liability, the effect of the statutory extension of the admiralty doctrine of limitation of liability upon damage …

Text-To-Image Model-Based Image Segmentation For Scene Understanding In Autonomous Robot Navigation, Stéphane Lee, Hakki Erhan Sevil May 2025

Text-To-Image Model-Based Image Segmentation For Scene Understanding In Autonomous Robot Navigation, Stéphane Lee, Hakki Erhan Sevil

Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics

Image segmentation is essential for navigation and scene understanding in autonomous systems, particularly in un- structured outdoor environments. This study investigates the seg- mentation capabilities of DALL-E 3, a generative text-to-image model, that is not explicitly trained for semantic segmentation. A custom segmentation pipeline was developed to evaluate and refine DALL-E 3 outputs on outdoor images from the RELLIS- 3D dataset. The post-processing workflow includes morphological operations with varied structure elements to enhance segmenta- tion accuracy. Segmentation accuracy was assessed using mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) across selected terrain classes. Results show that the raw DALL-E 3 outputs were improved …

Insider Trading On Undisclosed Corporate Information: Diamond V. Oreamuno, John M. Whalen

Maine Law Review

The New York Court of Appeals recently ruled that a corporation may hold its officers and directors, who use material inside information, accountable for gains realized by them from transactions in the company's stock. The purpose of this note is to analyze Diamond v. Oreamuno in light of the existing federal law and to propose its application in the federal system.

The Farm Worker: His Need For Legislation, Susan Calkins May 2025

The Farm Worker: His Need For Legislation, Susan Calkins

Maine Law Review

Of America's ignored and invisible people, the farm worker is one of the most ignored and least visible. He is hidden by the crops as he works his way down the endless rows. Far from the cities where the laws are made and the issues of the day are debated, his voice is not heard. He is vitally necessary to this well-fed nation, and yet his needs are seldom considered. The legislators have not ignored the industrial worker. They have provided him with laws insuring a minimum wage, workmen's compensation and other such benefits. The farm worker, however, is expressly …

Right To Jury Trial: Lemieux V. Robbins, Stephen R. Sunenblick May 2025

Right To Jury Trial: Lemieux V. Robbins, Stephen R. Sunenblick

Maine Law Review

A sagacious English liveryman named Tobias Hobson allowed each customer to choose the horse nearest the door, thereby presenting these customers with no real alternative. The State of Maine made a like proposition in Lemieux v. Robbins by implementing a novel criminal procedure whereby a defendant has a "choice" of either accepting his district court misdemeanor conviction as final, or appealing for a de novo trial by jury in superior court and possibly being convicted of a felony for contravening the same statute under which he was originally charged. The implementation of this procedure began with a complaint filed in …

Environmental Jurisdiction In The Congress And The Executive, Edmund S. Muskie May 2025

Environmental Jurisdiction In The Congress And The Executive, Edmund S. Muskie

Maine Law Review

Extraterrestrial exploration and a historic lunar success have helped give modern man a unique perspective on the earth and his natural environment. We have looked on our planet from the reaches of outer space and have seen how small, how alone, and how vulnerable we are. We have travelled to the moon and photographed Mars, but we have finally realized that no matter how far or how fast we grow, no matter how far afield our explorations take us, and no matter how great our vision, we must always return to earth. This is a discomfiting realization for a civilization …

The Administrative Discharge: Changes Needed?, Norman B. Lynch May 2025

The Administrative Discharge: Changes Needed?, Norman B. Lynch

Maine Law Review

At its annual convention in 1968 the American Bar Association adopted a resolution authorizing its Special Committee on Military Justice to urge congressional action with respect to the military administrative discharge and military due process of law. In response to this urging two bills were introduced in the 91st Congress dealing with the administrative discharge of members of the Armed Forces. One was sponsored by Congressman Charles E. Bennett, (D. Fla.). Another was introduced by Senator Sam J. Ervin, (D. N.C.). The Bennett bill proposes amendments to title 10 of the United States Code to limit the separation of members …

The Civilianization Of Military Law, Edward F. Sherman May 2025

The Civilianization Of Military Law, Edward F. Sherman

Maine Law Review

Military law in the United States has always functioned as a system of jurisprudence independent of the civilian judiciary. It has its own body of substantive laws and procedures which has a different historical derivation than the civilian criminal law. The federal courts have always been reluctant to interfere with the court-martial system, as explained by the Supreme Court in 1953 in Burns v. Wilson: "Military law, like state law, is a jurisprudence which exists separate and apart from the law which governs in our federal judicial establishment. This Court has played no role in its development; we have exerted …
