Living In Paradise? Cameroonian Women In The American Diaspora, Joseph Takougang
Living In Paradise? Cameroonian Women In The American Diaspora, Joseph Takougang
Journal of African Policy Studies
For decades after independence, African migration was a phenomenon that could be attributed to a patriarchal culture that encouraged male domination. Later, that traditional mindset was reinforced by a colonial system that often marginalized the role of women in many African societies. Indeed, because young men were more likely to be educated than their female counterparts under the colonial system, they were advantaged after independence to attend institutions of higher learning abroad when it became necessary to train young Africans to occupy important government and other decision-making positions in the newly independent states. Recently, however, women have become important players, …

Africa And Us Foreign Direct Investments In The 21st Century: The Contours Of Global Engagement, Moses K. Tesi
Journal of African Policy Studies
The focus of this article is to analyze the state of US private investments in Africa, the nature, pattern, and trend of such investments, and various ideas about factors that have either inhibited or accelerated the growth of investment flows to countries in the region. US private investments in Africa were inconsequential from the 1960s to 1990s, but in the 2000s, significant efforts were made by the US government to encourage, promote, and support private US firms to invest in Africa, and efforts were also made by African governments to increase US private investments on the continent. My research shows …

Women And The Policy Process: Minimum Marriageable Age Policy Adoption In Nigeria, Ene Ekpebe
Journal of African Policy Studies
Nigeria has the eleventh highest incidence of early marriage – marriage before the age of 18 – in the world. This is problematic because early marriage has been shown to have significant health and socioeconomic disadvantages for girls. In 2003, the Child Rights Act (CRA) was adopted by the federal government of Nigeria. One of its provisions was a prohibition of early marriage. As of 2022, 25 of Nigeria’s 36 states had adopted the CRA. However, only 23 have adopted its minimum marriageable age provision without exception. This paper discusses the factors affecting the adoption of the CRA’s minimum marriageable …

Method For Manufacturing Radial Brushes, Thomas Gyarmati
Method For Manufacturing Radial Brushes, Thomas Gyarmati
Defensive Publications Series
: The invention relates to a method for manufacturing radial brushes, in which the bristles, once inserted into the brush body, no longer require circumferential trimming. Nevertheless, the finished brush exhibits a diameter tolerance comparable to that of conventionally trimmed brushes.
By eliminating the cutting step, there is no bristle waste, which represents a significant advantage, particularly when using high-cost bristle materials.
The method enables the use of densely packed bristle bundles with an increased bristle content, thereby enhancing the brushing performance. Moreover, the method allows for high flexibility in the production of customer-specific brushes with variable characteristics.

Al-Nisour Journal for Medical Sciences
A new technique for impulse noise discrimination of medical MRI images is presented. Statistical F-distribution supported by Monte Carlo simulation for prediction of impulse noise location on distorted images is used. The selective noisy pixels are detected as noisy using the One-Way ANOVA hypothesis method. The statistical prediction method is applied to the test images to predict the noise location. The distorted portions in the images predicted by this structure are improved by using a proper nonlinear filter. The nonlinear median filter is showing a suitable way the replacement of degraded pixels. The filter is not applied to the not-detected …

Tidal Heating In Gas Giant Ice Moons, Sage Benz-Narveson
Senior Seminars and Capstones
This presentation is on the icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn, Europa and Enceladus. They are both known for being relatively large moons of gas giants made of a lot of water ice with silicate cores. Both are also suspected to harbor liquid oceans underneath their icy surfaces, sustained by salinity and tidal heating. Liquid water is of extreme interest to astrobiologists, which this paper will address, but it is primarily about tidal heating and its implications for the size of the subsurface oceans.

Imposing Restrictions On The First Step Act’S Retroactive Application To Vacated Sentences, Isabelle M. Carbajales, Lauren O’Neil Hamilton
Imposing Restrictions On The First Step Act’S Retroactive Application To Vacated Sentences, Isabelle M. Carbajales, Lauren O’Neil Hamilton
University of Miami Law Review
The First Step Act has been called “the most significant criminal justice reform bill in a generation.” Until recently, the Eleventh Circuit had not weighed in on whether Section 403 of the First Step Act’s sentencing reforms applies to defendants whose initial sentences were vacated and who face resentencing after the Act’s enactment. On July 2, 2024, the Supreme Court agreed to squarely consider this issue, despite the Department of Justice siding with defendants yet calling the issue “shallow.” On July 8, 2024, the Eleventh Circuit held these defendants are not entitled to the benefits of the First Step Act …

Snowmelt Runoff Driven Hydropower Modelling Based On Spaceborne Remotely Sensed And Ground Weather Network Data, Ninad Bhagwat
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Identification of new optimal hydropower locations provides an opportunity to improve mankind's green energy portfolio by developing new hydroelectric plants, thereby decreasing the carbon footprint. Preliminary analysis of locating the optimal hydropower sites is generally the first step towards construction of a new hydropower plant. In this dissertation, I developed a parsimonious, yet robust tool to perform the preliminary analysis to locate optimal hydropower locations in any watershed using the remotely sensed Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Simulating the snowmelt-derived streamflow is crucial for water resources management in snow-dominated watersheds. The Snowmelt Runoff Model (SRM) is a lumped-parameter, temperature-index model that …

While other timing protocols exist, internal clock actively synchronized to GPS time. This GPS dependence creates a potential cybersecurity vulnerability that requires attention. In this thesis, two critical aspects of GPS Spoofing Attacks (GSAs) were investigated. First, laboratory experiments on how a commercial PMU, compliant with the IEEE C37.118 standard, responds to a variety of GSAs. This work examines the ability of PMUs to detect certain spoofing attacks, highlighting cases where detection fails. The characteristic signature of the PMU …
Fenitization Of Mafic Wallrock Associated With Emplacement Of Ree-Rich Carbonatites Of Sheep Creek, Southern Ravalli County, Montana, Tage Young
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
The Sheep Creek area of southern Ravalli County, Montana, contains numerous small, carbonatite-related deposits rich in niobium (Nb) and rare earth elements (REE). The carbonatite bodies are typically < 2 m wide, strike northeast or east, and dip moderately to steeply to the north. The carbonatites are locally deformed, and are conformable to foliation in the host rocks. The host rocks belong to a 1.37 Ga, bimodal, metaigneous complex consisting of granite/augen gneiss and diabase/amphibolite. When found in close proximity to a mineralized carbonatite body, the mafic wall rock is altered to a fenite assemblage that includes phlogopite, albite or Na-rich plagioclase, calcite ± dolomite, magnetite, and sodic amphiboles (riebeckite, winchite). The mineral transformations are consistent with observed changes in the bulk chemistry of the mafic wall rocks, including consistent increases in K2O, Na2O, and H2O/CO2 and consistent decreases in SiO2 and Al2O3. Relatively minor changes in FeO and MgO were found to take place during the fenitization process. Fenite alteration is most strongly developed adjacent to carbonatites that are strongly mineralized with Nb-REE minerals. Unmineralized carbonatites have fenite zones that are weak or absent. Although the fenites themselves are not strongly enriched in REE, transfer of SiO2 and Al2O3 from the fenites back into the carbonatite bodies may have triggered deposition of REE-rich allanite and other silicate minerals (Ba-feldspar, actinolite, quartz) that are locally abundant in the carbonate lodes. An influx of silica may also have lowered the solubility of REE-phosphate in the carbonatite melts, resulting in deposition of monazite. Most fenites that have been described in previous studies around the world formed by alteration of felsic country rock (granite, gneiss, siliciclastic metasediments). These fenites are rich in alkali feldspar and aegirine, and form conspicuous, pink-colored outcrops that surround the central carbonatite complex. Because the country rock in the Sheep Creek area has a mafic starting composition, the fenites in this study have a completely different mineralogy, being rich in biotite, albite, and matrix calcite. These fenites erode to a crumbly grus soil, do not crop out well, and are therefore easy to miss or ignore in the field. However, recognition of these rocks is important because they are vectors to a nearby mineralized carbonatite.
