Prevalence Of Well Water Contaminants In Georgia From 2010-2022, Angelique B. Willis, Suhasini Ramisetty-Mikler, Christine E. Stauber, Uttam Kumar Saha
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: Safe, reliable, and clean drinking water sources are a basic necessity. More than 1.7 million individuals rely on private wells for drinking water in Georgia and are confronted with water quality challenges stemming from chemical contamination as private wells are not under mandated regulations as public water supplies. In Georgia, previous studies suggested that the variation of soil and rock in a physiographic province (region) plays an essential role in the quality of private well water. There is a need to understand the distribution of these chemical contaminants above the federal Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) and how different geologies …

MicroRNA-mediated post-transcriptional regulation of lung alveolar type 2 (AT2) and AT1 cell differentiation remains understudied. Here, we demonstrate that the let-7 miRNA family plays a homeostatic role in AT2 quiescence by preventing the uncontrolled accumulation of AT2 transitional cells and promoting AT1 differentiation. Using mouse and organoid models, we show that genetic ablation of let-7a1/let-7f1/let-7d cluster (let-7afd) in AT2 cells prevents AT1 differentiation and leads to KRT8 transitional cell accumulation in progressive pulmonary fibrosis. Integration of AGO2-eCLIP with RNA-sequencing identified direct let-7 targets within an oncogene feed-forward regulatory network, including BACH1/EZH2/MYC, which drives an aberrant fibrotic cascade. Additional CUT&RUN-sequencing analyses …

Molecular Basis Of Trpv3 Channel Blockade By Intracellular Polyamines, Jingying Zhang, Peng Yuan, Colin G Nichols, Grigory Maksaev
2020-Current year OA Pubs
ThermoTRPV1-4 channels are involved in the regulation of multiple physiological processes, including thermo- and pain perception, thermoregulation, itch, and nociception and therefore tight control of their activity is a critical requirement for correct perception of noxious stimuli and pain. We previously reported a voltage-dependent inhibition of TRPV1-4 channels by intracellular polyamines that could be explained by high affinity spermine binding in, and passage through, the permeation path. Here, using electrophysiology and cryo-electron microscopy, we elucidate molecular details of TRPV3 blockade by endogenous spermine and its analog NASPM. We identify a high-affinity polyamine interaction site at the intracellular side of the …

Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"
This first edition, composed by nine co-authors and one talented illustrator, is not the first, nor the last, to seek something more from our community. We hope this book will be expanded by passionate students who come long after us, as they record, examine, and lend their voices to the social issues of their age. It’s hard work changing a system, whether it be a mechanical wonder or our society as a whole, but such work is never meant to be done alone and must be tackled with the utmost determination. For this, our book also aims to show the …

Maroon Science: A Counterstory Of Apocalypse, Abolition, And Abandonment, Kenjus Watson
Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"
This Critical Race Counterstory explores "Maroon Science," covert and adaptive knowledge systems rooted in African Sacred Sciences, as a means of navigating the dystopic polycrisis of anti-Blackness, Black youth suicide, and climate destruction. Framed through Apocalyptic Education, the work begins at the end, the inevitable collapse of western schooling and broader state systems it supports, to foreground fugitivity as essential to Black autonomy. The track maps connections between Black Indigeneity, ecological adaptation, and the concealment necessary for maroon communities to evade capture. The layered counterstory portrays Maroon Science as contingencies for African epistemologies of survival, flourishing in ungovernable pockets of …

Prison Education And Abolitionist Praxis: Insights And Reflections From Inside-Out Participants, Ninah J. Jackson, Nyako Pippen, Vanessa Massaro
Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"
This track draws on our experience in an Inside-Out course taught at a state correctional institution in Pennsylvania. As an outside student, inside student, and instructor in our learning community, we consider the abolitionist potential of classes taught behind prison walls. Does it necessarily perpetuate the prison industrial complex, or can it render boundaries porous? We take an autoethnographic approach to our experiences, frustrations, challenges, and triumphs, considering if, and under what conditions, such a program can promote abolition. Based on our reflection, we see the potential to intentionally create liberatory classroom spaces on a small scale. We offer some …

We Have Fifty-Eleven Problems, Of Course, Racism Is One: Exploring The Navigation Of A Pwi, Aminah Crawford, Virginia Redwine Johnson, Micayla Gooden
Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"
This study explored the experiences of three Black women navigating dual roles as graduate students and instructors at a predominantly white institution (PWI). Their narratives revealed persistent challenges like implicit bias, racism, microaggressions, and limited opportunities, reflecting broader systemic issues that impact Black students in similar environments. Despite these adversities, the women demonstrated notable resilience. The findings emphasize the importance of creating policies and practices that foster inclusivity and support for marginalized communities within academic settings. By highlighting both personal and systemic barriers, this research contributes to understanding the complexities of Black women’s experiences at PWIs.

Moths Of The Douglas Lake Region (Emmet And Cheboygan Counties), Michigan: Vii. Tortricidae (Lepidoptera), Brian G. Scholtens, Michael Sabourin
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Two hundred thiry-four species of Tortricidae are documented from Emmet and Cheboygan counties in Michigan, including 32 state records. This is the second major taxon of microlepidoptera inventoried from the area, and provides the first significant listing of a regional tortricid fauna from the state. Several additions are expected for this list as additional habitats and seasons are sampled more effectively.

Spatiotemporal Patterns Of Population Decline In Oarisma Poweshiek (Hesperiidae) In Michigan And Minnesota Between 1990 And 2013, Elise C. Rosengren, David A. Andow
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The recent contraction of the geographic range of Oarisma poweshiek (Poweshiek skipperling) (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae) resulted in its listing as an endangered species in 2014 (USFWS 2014). However, changes in population density within sites associated with this contraction are still not understood. This range-wide contraction of Poweshiek skipperling appears to indicate a regional cause. Using population data from multiple sites in Michigan and Minnesota, we investigated the temporal and spatial patterns of population decline to determine if regional or site-specific factors likely contributed to the decline. We hypothesized that if regional factors caused the density declines, then the declines would be …

Associations Among Serropalpus Substriatus (Coleoptera: Melandryidae) And Sirex (Hymenoptera: Siricidae) Communities, Tonya D. Bittner, Ann E. Hajek, James K. Liebherr
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Serropalpus substriatus Haldeman (Coleoptera: Melandryidae) develops within the same trees as Sirex noctilio F. and Sirex cyaneus F. (Hymenoptera: Siricidae). This species is now reported emerging from red pine (Pinus resinosa Sol. ex Aiton) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) (Pinaceae) in eastern North America. Numbers of Se. substriatus emerging from pines were always much lower than numbers of Sirex in trees, and 18% of Se. substriatus required 2 years before emergence. During first years of emergence, Se. substriatus was found in only 12 of 41 sampled red pines infested by Si. noctilio. Trees from which Se. substriatus emerged …

Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics
This paper presents an enhanced hybrid planning architecture that integrates Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs) with Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control for indoor robot navigation under uncertainty. Our approach uses PID controller feedback—proportional, integral, and derivative signals—as observation variables in the POMDP model, exploiting well tested mechanisms of processing sensor data. A case study is conducted using an iCreate3 robot navigating a university corridor to deliver a load to a specified room by identifying door frames. We evaluate three progressively refined models with increasing sensor integration and probabilistic reasoning. Experimental results demonstrate that the multi-sensor fusion model achieves an 85% task …

Ai Inventorship: Recognizing The True Inventors Requires Change, Nicholas Scambia
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
The Analytical Engine was conceived almost two hundred years ago—a general-purpose programmable computing engine which had essential features resembling a modern-day computer. While truly a marvel for its time, the Analytical Engine lacked the ability to perform functions on its own, as it was only able to do tasks for which it was programmed.
Today, artificial intelligence (“AI”) has become increasingly popular and powerful and is projected to keep growing. AI demonstrated its autonomous strength to the whole world on national TV when IBM’s Watson competed on Jeopardy!, beating the game show’s legends Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Since …

Advances in Cancer Education and Quality Improvement
Background and Objectives
We previously reported that implementation of a department-wide opioid education program led to post-education improvements in opioid perceptions and prescription recommendations, with one-month and one-year retention. With ongoing programmatic and quality improvement efforts, we sought to re-evaluate the retention of these improvements five years after initial efforts.
Methods
Attending surgeons, clinical fellows, and advanced practice providers were surveyed five years after implementation of a comprehensive, departmental opioid reduction framework in August 2018. This framework initially consisted of dedicated opioid education sessions and retrospective assessment of prescribing practices, and subsequently expanded over time to include prospective quality improvement …

International Perspectives On Research Data Management Services In Academic Libraries, Chris Reynolds, Kayla Richards
School of Information Student Research Journal
The information landscape in academic libraries is undergoing a massive fundamental shift, from scarcity to abundance aided by changes in technology. One such change is the development of research data management (RDM) and their related services. Research data management services (RDMS) allow libraries to aid in “creating, finding, organizing, storing, sharing and preserving data within any research process” (Cox & Verbaan, 2018). Our research seeks to understand where RDMS is currently at on the global stage. Are international institutions currently developing RDM services? What is needed for successful implementation? And are there any considerable challenges? Through a comprehensive literature review, …

Evaluating Relative Localization In Gps-Denied Environments Using Starling2 Uavs, Taiwo Hazeez, Cosme Penney, Daniel Guido, Pratik Mukherjee
Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics
This paper presents preliminary results from a study that evaluated vision-based methods for relative localization in GPS-denied environments using Starling 2 drones as test agents. For distributed multi-agent coordination, robot-to-robot localization is critical. In this direction, we evaluate two vision- based detection methods: fiducial-marker based and neural network-based. We use a You Only Look Once (YOLOv8) neural network for drone detection for the on-board localization method. The model was trained from scratch and fine-tuned on a custom dataset. The model performance was 0.94 for [email protected] and 0.63 for [email protected]:0.95. The results demonstrated robust detection under diverse visual conditions. Additionally, we …
