Enhancing Management Of Hospitalized Patients With Opioid Withdrawal, Christine Aliory May 2025

Enhancing Management Of Hospitalized Patients With Opioid Withdrawal, Christine Aliory

Group: Northern Arizona University School of Nursing, DNP Doctoral Papers

Opioid use disorder (OUD) impacts over 1.2 million people in the United States. This population suffers from multiple comorbidities which can result in the need for hospitalization. Managing opioid withdrawal in hospitalized patients is challenging. Assessment tools like the Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale (COWS) help healthcare providers determine appropriate interventions to alleviate withdrawal symptoms for these patients. This quality improvement project aimed to decrease the number of incidents of violent behaviors and/or patients leaving the hospital against medical advice (AMA) during opioid withdrawal and enhance nurses’ ability to perform the COWS assessment. Organizational data from a 402-bed acute care hospital …

Puerto Rico's Coast: Preservation Through Positive Obligations On Property Owners And The State In The Context Of Climate Change, Jaime Villeta-Garcia May 2025

Puerto Rico's Coast: Preservation Through Positive Obligations On Property Owners And The State In The Context Of Climate Change, Jaime Villeta-Garcia

Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy

The rise in sea level, the obvious rampant coastal erosion and the uncertain future due to climate change urge the need to rethink the coast, through property and administrative law. The security of life, property and the fair and orderly use of the ultra-valuable resources that is the coast depend on a new concept for properties in the coastal zone and its effective execution by a conscious and responsible State. Centered on the community of Ocean Park in San Juan, Puerto Rico, it’s no longer a question of whether coastal property rights can contribute to safeguarding the coast, but rather …

‘Amazigh Literary Space’: Intersection And Hybridity Across Languages And Media, Daniela Merolla May 2025

‘Amazigh Literary Space’: Intersection And Hybridity Across Languages And Media, Daniela Merolla

Journal of Amazigh Studies

My contribution will focus on multilingualism and multimedia in the ‘Amazigh literary and cinematographic space’ (Merolla De l’art, “Amazigh/Berber Literature”). Examining this notion coined in the 1990’s (Merolla “Gender and Community”) allows us to reflect on ongoing debates regarding North African literatures in postcolonial contexts. It also helps to see that Amazigh/Berber literature solely defined as Amazigh-language production tends to isolate works and performances that engage with multiple languages and literary traditions, cultural intersections, and hybridization in North Africa and its diasporas. The discussion is contextualized within the historical development of what is sometimes referred to as the “North …

Echoes Of Exclusion: The Underrepresentation Of Women In Congressional Testimony And Its Consequences For Judicial Decision-Making, Caroline L. Bruckner, Elizabeth Keith, Karen O'Connor, Collin A. Coil

ConLawNOW

Congressional hearing witnesses play a major role in the legislative process, providing information to committees to assist members and staff in crafting legislation. Recently, there has been increasing focus on the impact of congressional witnesses on legislative outcomes, executive implementation of federal statutes, and corresponding judicial decisions. This has raised questions as to the extent to which the underrepresentation of women and other marginalized groups as congressional witnesses can be measured and how their lack of representation translates to inequitable outcomes across all branches of government. This work explores the widespread use of congressional witness testimony in recent U.S. Supreme …

An Intuitive Approach To Enstoriment During Demonstrator Design Process: A Pilot Case Study, Aleksandra Sviridova, Jouke Verlinden May 2025

An Intuitive Approach To Enstoriment During Demonstrator Design Process: A Pilot Case Study, Aleksandra Sviridova, Jouke Verlinden

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Demonstrators, versatile concepts that combine engineering, art, and design are commonly used to communicate technology research. Due to the high complexity and abstractness of such research, product development designers face challenges during the design process. One of the key factors is 'enstoriment', the process of turning concepts into stories and then making them visible through tangible artifacts. The authors of this paper have experienced this in their practice. They had to design a demonstrator without any information on how to do it. In order to see how other designers would approach a similar task without any prior guidance, a pilot …

Which Interaction? Mapping Feedback And Feedforward In Data Physicalization(S), Giorgia Burzio, Venere Ferraro

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Data Physicalization (DP) is an emerging field that encodes data into physical artefacts to foster tangible interaction, understanding, and engagement. This paper investigates the interplay between data encoding, user interaction, and design principles within DP, focusing on feedback and feedforward mechanisms. Through a scoping review and the development of an annotated portfolio of 36 case studies, the study categorizes DP into three types: static, constructive, and dynamic. Each type presents unique characteristics influencing how data is experienced and interacted with by users. A practical activity involving 96 master’s students was conducted to map a selection of 20 case studies onto …

How Do You Feel? Physical Vocabularies For Communicating Pain Using Data Physicalization, Adam Drogemuller, Xiaojiao Du, Aaron Davis, Felicity Braithwaite, Ian Gwilt May 2025

How Do You Feel? Physical Vocabularies For Communicating Pain Using Data Physicalization, Adam Drogemuller, Xiaojiao Du, Aaron Davis, Felicity Braithwaite, Ian Gwilt

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The experience of pain, particularly chronic pain, can be difficult to communicate. Current best practice involves communicating pain to clinicians verbally on a numerical scale or via a visual Likert scale. However, we argue that verbal vocabularies and visual scales do not effectively capture the complexities and narrative journey of individuals recovering and living through chronic pain. We argue that as pain is a multidimensional experience that includes physical and physiological elements, we need a more nuanced way of describing the experience. Thus, we have explored how people can explain their pain (whether affective or sensory) by interacting with a …

The Impact Of Audio-Visual Legends On Information Design: A Research Through Design Case Study, Valentina Caiola, Permagnus Lindborg

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

While the concept and practice of legends in data visualization are well-established, the field of data sonification is still working towards explicit design guidelines. The present paper reports an exploratory study investigating the embodied experience of combining audio and visuals in legends, focusing on its effect on non-expert audiences. Through this integration, the research highlights sound’s unique potential to convey information and expand how data is perceived and understood. We employed the Research Through Design (RtD) methodology across two iterative case studies: focus group and experiment. The focus group study explored participants’ (N = 4) perceptions of the balance between …

Beyond The Paper Trail: Challenging Traditional Outputs In Design Research, Spyros Bofylatos May 2025

Beyond The Paper Trail: Challenging Traditional Outputs In Design Research, Spyros Bofylatos

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

We live in a world bloated with data yet starved for wisdom (Kapuʻuwailani Lindsey 2012). As sustainability challenges grow increasingly complex, the limitations of traditional, data-centric research approaches become apparent. This paper argues that the transition towards sustainability necessitates not just technological innovations, but a fundamental ontological shift in how we structure knowledge claims. Modernist systems of values in research, characterised by control, reductionism, and quantification, often marginalised tacit knowledge, indigenous ways of knowing, and intuition. Specifically, this paper advocates for the adoption of Research through Design (RtD) as a methodological paradigm that bridges the gap between quantifiable data and …

Craftsman Gaze Data Study To Enhance Craft Material Selection And Facilitate Knowledge Transfer, Catherine Schwarz, Jean-François Bassereau, Jenny Faucheu

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Material selection methods and tools are mainly quantitative multicriteria based and cater essentially to engineering material selection requirements. However, shifts in material sourcing and manufacturing as well as data processing tend to lean towards tailored fabrication models in which the material leads the design. This highlights emerging opportunities and requirements in material selection, including the need to consider the situation of the person making the assessment, which has come to the forefront of material selection. Designers and researchers have already provided valuable research to enhance material selection on a sensorial basis. However, little has been recommended for material selection based …

Nyc In Crisis: How The Tiny But Mighty Atlantic Oyster Could Fix Nyc’S Aquatic Problems, Ariella Hatch Tuchman

Student Theses 2015-Present

This paper addresses how modern policy and an extensive history of unsustainable environmental practices in New York have led to the destruction of the Oyster Reef of New York Harbor and the extreme flooding and pollution in the water system that came from it. The Oyster Reef was seen as a valuable food source going back to the Lenape tribe. Over time, this has served to the detriment of the reef as its resources have been overestimated and depleted. Chapters 1 and 2 use mainly quantitative data to connect the reef's decline to the decline in the quality of seawater …

Schiff bases exhibit a wide range of biological activities, including antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of study was to synthesized 2-amino-benzothiazole derivatives and showed their novel structure leads to potent antimicrobial activity. The Schiff base compounds derived from 6-bromo-4-fluoro-2-aminobenzothazol was prepared from the reaction of 6-bromo-4-fluoro-2-aminobenzothazol compound (W1) with potassium thiocyanate in the presence of bromine. Unsaturated Alpha-Beta (W2-6) compounds were obtained from the reaction of and aromatic benzaldehyd with para -hydroxy acetophenone in a basal medium. The interaction of alpha-beta - unsaturated compounds with 4,6-dichloro-2-aminobenzothiazole gives compounds (W7-11) 4-(1-(4,6-dichlorobenzothiazole-2-El amino) - 3-aryl) phenol. The prepared compounds …
