Verkhivker

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

KRAS, a historically "undruggable" oncogenic driver, has eluded targeted therapies due to its lack of accessible binding pockets in its active state. This study investigates the conformational dynamics, binding mechanisms, and allosteric communication networks of KRAS in complexes with monobodies (12D1, 12D5) and affimer proteins (K6, K3, K69) to characterize the binding and allosteric mechanisms and hotspots of KRAS binding. Through molecular dynamics simulations, mutational scanning, binding free energy analysis and network-based analyses, we identified conserved allosteric hotspots that serve as critical nodes for long-range communication in KRAS. Key residues in β-strand 4 (F78, L80, F82), α-helix 3 (I93, H95, …

Use Of Margins Around Small Brain Metastasis Improves Specificity Of Evaluation Methods For Stereotactic Radiosurgery Treatment Plans, Purity Kemunto Bundi

LSU Master's Theses

Purpose: To reduce the high false positive rates (FPRs ≥ 46%) from the evaluation of Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatment plans for small brain metastases. Specifically, we modified two evaluation indices, Treated Volume Ratio (TVR) and Gradient Index (GI), which exhibited FPRs exceeding 84%. A false positive result incorrectly indicates that an acceptable plan, as determined by a medical physicist and a radiation oncologist, is inacceptable.

Methods: This study utilized training and validation datasets from Gamma Knife treatment plans from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center (MBPCC). Data included doses, …

Quasi-Normal Modes Of Extended Uncertainty Principle Kerr Black Holes, Ava Hoeger, Jonas Mureika May 2025

Quasi-Normal Modes Of Extended Uncertainty Principle Kerr Black Holes, Ava Hoeger, Jonas Mureika

Honors Thesis

The current understanding of gravity is shaped largely by Albert Einstein’s theory of General Relativity. This theory is highly successful at predicting phenomenon on macroscopic scales, but it faces unphysical singularities at quantum scales. This thesis will explore the possibility of combining General Relativity with quantum mechanics through the Extended Uncertainty Principle (EUP), which provides a new, fundamental length scale correction to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. This allows for quantum gravity effects at macroscopic scales, which will be examined through Kerr black holes with event horizons on the order of . These black holes are rotating and electrically neutral, and …

Intraspecific Sensory Diversity And The Decapod Claw: Patterns Of Sensillation Are Heterochelic And Sexually Dimorphic In Pagurus Bernhardus, Ari Drummond, Summer Nash, Tianna Holloway, Alexander Wilson, Lucy Turner, Mark Briffa, David T Bilton May 2025

Intraspecific Sensory Diversity And The Decapod Claw: Patterns Of Sensillation Are Heterochelic And Sexually Dimorphic In Pagurus Bernhardus, Ari Drummond, Summer Nash, Tianna Holloway, Alexander Wilson, Lucy Turner, Mark Briffa, David T Bilton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Information detection affects physiological performance and behaviour and is vital to survival and fitness. Despite the recognised importance of sensory adaptations in information acquisition and manipulation, many forms of sensory variation—from within individuals to between species—remain underexplored. To better understand the role of information in evolution, it is important to examine sensory variation as part of a cohesive framework of sensory diversity. Using the decapod claw, a structure well-recognised for its morphological variation, we investigated sensory diversity at the intraspecific level by assessing heterochely and sexual dimorphism in the chelar morphologies of Pagurus bernhardus hermit crabs. We employed a novel …

In drug-resistant focal epilepsy, planning surgical resection can involve presurgical intracranial EEG (iEEG) recordings to detect seizures and other iEEG patterns to improve postsurgical seizure outcome. We hypothesized that resection of tissue generating interictal high-frequency oscillations (HFOs, 80-500 Hz) in the iEEG predicts surgical outcome. In eight international epilepsy centres, iEEG was recorded during the presurgical evaluation of patients. The patients were of all ages, had epilepsy of all types, and underwent surgical resection of a single focus aiming at seizure freedom. In a prospective analysis, we applied a fully automated definition of HFO that was independent of the dataset. …

Muller, John N. Van Den Anker, Amira Al-Uzri, Marisa L. Meyer, Sarah G. Anderson, Sitora Turdalieva, Andrea N. Edginton, Daniel Gonzalez, Best Pharmaceuticals For Children Act Pediatric Trials Network Steering Committee

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Children represent a highly complex and variable population for treatment, including interindividual differences in drug dose-exposure. Midazolam has been used as a sedative for hospitalized children on- and off-label; however, factors affecting interindividual variability (IIV) in observed clearance for this population are not fully understood and can result in extreme under- or overexposure. Obesity has been described as a significant influence on midazolam in adolescents, which could potentially alter drug exposure. The goal of this study was to use two modeling strategies to evaluate dose-exposure of midazolam in children with and without obesity. Population pharmacokinetic modeling assessed whether measures of …

The Role Of Somatization In Predicting Health-Related Quality Of Life Among Racial And Ethnic Minorities: Examining The Mediating Effects Of Perceived Injustice And Symptom Catastrophizing, Kimi Han Hashimoto May 2025

The Role Of Somatization In Predicting Health-Related Quality Of Life Among Racial And Ethnic Minorities: Examining The Mediating Effects Of Perceived Injustice And Symptom Catastrophizing, Kimi Han Hashimoto

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

There is a pressing need to address the significant health disparities of underrepresented groups such as racial and ethnic minorities (Mills et al., 2020). As of 2019, individuals identifying as a racial or ethnic minority make up 40% of the U.S population as of 2019, yet they fare significantly worse across many health-related measures (Hill et al., 2022). Given these disparities in healthcare and health outcomes, racial and ethnic minorities represent an important group to investigate somatization and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Cognitive appraisals, such as perceived injustice and symptom catastrophizing, may mediate this relationship, influencing how somatization translates …

Efficient Eeg Epilepsy Classification And Feature Selections Based On Hellinger Distance, Muhammed Sadiq May 2025

Efficient Eeg Epilepsy Classification And Feature Selections Based On Hellinger Distance, Muhammed Sadiq

Theses and Dissertations

Accurate and efficient detection of epileptic seizures from EEG signals remains a critical challenge due to high-dimensional data, class imbalance, and the limitations of standard classifiers. This thesis introduces two novel models to address these challenges. The first model presents a new classifier based on the Hellinger Distance, specifically designed to enhance discriminative capability and robustness against imbalanced datasets. By integrating the Hellinger Distance Classifier with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for feature selection, this model significantly improves classification performance while reducing computational complexity. Experimental evaluations on the Bonn dataset demonstrate an accuracy of 96.25%, an F1-score of 97.74%, a recall …

Best Friend, False Friend: The “Favour” Rule In Comparative Labour Law, Luca Ratti May 2025

Best Friend, False Friend: The “Favour” Rule In Comparative Labour Law, Luca Ratti

Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal

Employment relationships can be governed by multiple legal frameworks, including statutory labour codes, collective bargaining agreements (at both enterprise and sectoral levels), and individual employment contracts. How are conflicts between these sources of law resolved? In many jurisdictions, the “favour rule” addresses such conflicts by prioritising the source that offers the greatest benefit to the employee. This rule aims to prevent employers from leveraging their superior bargaining power in individual contracts to undercut more favourable terms established through collective bargaining. However, comparative analysis reveals that the scope of the favour rule is narrowing in some jurisdictions, where it is increasingly …

Microlearning As An Effective Training Method For Healthcare Employees To Improve Competencies And Organizational Success, Laqurandra Weeks

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Challenges in keeping healthcare employees motivated raise concerns to organizational leaders because of healthcare’s changing and complex environments. Healthcare leaders are concerned because, without the proper training, an employee’s level of competence may negatively affect the quality of care they provide and patient safety. The specific research problem is the lack of lived experiences regarding the effectiveness of microlearning that have not readily had access to healthcare employees’ feedback and their preference for learning to apply skills and knowledge in the workplace. Grounded in microlearning theory, the purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic study was to explore the lived experiences of …

Avoiding Recidivism Of Recently Released Offenders In North Carolina, Josue Genaro Galvez May 2025

Avoiding Recidivism Of Recently Released Offenders In North Carolina, Josue Genaro Galvez

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is a problem with recidivism in the North Carolina prison system and the United States. This study fills the gap in the literature by focusing on what life experiences contribute to behaviors in recently released offenders not to reoffend in North Carolina. Edmund Husserl's (1913) Transcendental Phenomenology used several angles of perception and a thematic analysis of the participant’s lived experiences. This study employed a purposive sampling method by targeting 17 participants who may have represented characteristics of the intended population. Researchers do not know what kept these released offenders from avoiding prison. This phenomenological design focused on the …

Genetic, Transcriptomic, And Epigenomic Insights Into Sjögren's Disease: An Integrative Network Investigation And Immune Diseases Comparison, Nitesh Enduru, Astrid M Manuel, Zhongming Zhao

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Sjögren's disease (SjD) is a systemic autoimmune disorder primarily causing dry eyes and mouth. It frequently overlaps with other autoimmune diseases (AIDs), including rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, the genetic basis of SjD remains underexplored, limiting our understanding of its connections to other immune-mediated conditions. In this study, we aimed to identify gene networks associated with SjD through the integration of genetic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic data. We further compared the genetic factors of SjD with other immune-mediated diseases. We analyzed genome-wide association studies (GWAS) summary statistics, DNA methylation, and transcriptomic data using our in-house network-based methods, …

This fourth article in a seven part series presents the Core GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach to addressing risk of bias, publication bias, and rating up certainty. In Core GRADE, randomised controlled trials begin as high certainty evidence and non-randomised studies of interventions (NRSI) as low certainty. To assess certainty of evidence for risk of bias, Core GRADE users first classify individual studies as low or high risk of bias. Decisions regarding rating down for risk of bias will depend on the weights of high and low risk of bias studies and similarities or differences between …

Identity And The Russian-Ukrainian War: Evidence From The American Community Survey, Matthew Holian, Oleh Wolowyna May 2025

Identity And The Russian-Ukrainian War: Evidence From The American Community Survey, Matthew Holian, Oleh Wolowyna

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 led to significant changes in ethnic identity and language preferences among U.S. residents. We observe an 18.9% increase in U.S.-born individuals identifying as ethnic Ukrainian from 2021 to 2022 and a 6.8% decrease for U.S.-born ethnic Russians, which cannot be attributed to prior trends or sampling variation. The changes among Ukrainians were more pronounced among college graduates and those living in Democratic-leaning counties. We document an increase in the use of the Ukrainian language among Ukrainian immigrants, which cannot be explained by prior trends or immigration patterns. We test for labor market discrimination, …

The conjugation of small ubiquitin-like modifiers (SUMO) to target proteins, known as SUMOylation, plays a crucial role in regulating protein homeostasis, activity, interaction with other proteins, and subcellular localization. Loss of SUMOylation in nongrowing oocytes by conditional deletion of the E2 SUMO conjugating enzyme, Ube2i, at the primordial follicle stage leads to female sterility due to complex changes in oocyte development, including altered folliculogenesis, defective meiotic progression, and premature loss of the ovarian reserve. In this study, proteomics was used to compare control and Ube2i conditional knockout ovaries during the first wave of folliculogenesis to identify key differences that may …

The Role Of Popular Culture In Decolonial Transformative Learning: A Racially Minoritized Adult Educator's Journey, Riyad Shahjahan

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

While a growing body of literature examines the role of popular culture in transformative learning, much of it centers on fostering transformative experiences among learners, rather than educators themselves. This paper addresses that gap by exploring how popular culture enhances transformative learning for racially minoritized adult educators. Drawing from my experiences as a graduate instructor at a predominantly white institution, I reflect on how engaging with popular cultural texts facilitated my own transformative learning within my teaching practice. Grounded in decolonial theory, which emphasizes the inclusion of Indigenous and marginalized knowledges while confronting contemporary colonial oppressions, my reflexive approach highlights …
