Musnad ʿAbd Allāh Ibn Al-Zubayr Al-Ḥumaydī As An Early Source Of Madanī Isnād: A Source Critical Study, Heba Mohamed Gaafar

Theses and Dissertations

The transmission of ḥadīth has been a subject of intense debate, particularly regarding the authenticity of early compilations. Musnad al-Ḥumaydī is a ḥadīth collection that has not received significant scholarly attention despite its potential to shed light on early ḥadīth transmission. This study critically examines Musnad al-Ḥumaydī by analyzing its structure, sources, and methodology, focusing on its relationship with Sufyān b. ʿUyayna, the primary transmitter of its ḥadīth. By applying isnād analysis and source criticism, this research challenges the assumption that early ḥadīth compilations were unreliable or retrospectively constructed. Al-Ḥumaydī did not simply collect narrations. The study demonstrates that Musnad …

Towards An Efficient Internet Of Things Intrusion Detection By Using Support Vector Machine, Rawan Abo Zidan, George Karraz

Baghdad Science Journal

Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are crucial for safeguarding Internet of Things (IoT) networks against security threats. The integration of Support Vector Machine (SVM) with smart IDs has been a significant advancement in detecting anomalous activities. This research contributes to this field by implementing the Gaussian Pyramid (GP) algorithm, significantly reducing the processing amount and storage space required for large IoT network traffic datasets. This approach enables the GP model to classify thousands of data points in large-scale problems with high-dimensional input space. Notably, the GP model, with various kernel sizes, outperforms traditional nonlinear SVM and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in …

Photoluminescent defects in diamond, such as the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center, are at the forefront of emerging optical quantum technologies. Most emit in the visible and near-infrared spectral region below 1000 nm (NIR-I), limiting their applications in photonics, fiber communications, and biology. Here, we show that the nitrogen-vacancy-nitrogen (N2V) center, which emits in the visible and near-infrared-II (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm), is ubiquitous in as-synthesized and processed nitrogen-doped diamond, ranging from bulk samples to nanoparticles. We demonstrate that N2V is also present in commercially available state-of-the-art NV diamond sensing chips made via chemical vapor deposition (CVD). In high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) diamonds, …

Nourishing The Living Tree: Vincent Macdonald And His Constitutional Thought, Preston Jordan Lim May 2025

Nourishing The Living Tree: Vincent Macdonald And His Constitutional Thought, Preston Jordan Lim

Faculty Publications

Since the enactment of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Canadian judges have increasingly approached the Constitution through a living constitutionalist lens, adapting the Constitution to contemporary realities and treating the text as but one interpretive modality alongside purpose and context. The Supreme Court has rooted this living constitutionalism in the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council’s judgment, Edwards v Attorney General of Canada, wherein Lord Sankey introduced the metaphor of the “living tree.” Justice Robert Sharpe and Professor Patricia McMahon have suggested that the “living tree metaphor remained a forgotten footnote until 1982.” Indeed, more formalist approaches towards …

Evaluating The Protective Role Of Epo-R76e In Oxidative Stress-Induced Cell Death In Retinal Pigment Epithelium, Jemima Alam

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) causes dysfunction and loss of Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). The degeneration and death of RPE cells causes irreversible visual impairment. Oxidative stress is a widely accepted triggering factor for RPE dysfunction. A hormone called Erythropoietin (EPO) is responsible to facilitate the erythropoiesis process, prevents progenitor cells from apoptosis and protects photoreceptors downregulating retinal degeneration. In this study, we aim to elucidate the role of EPO in downregulating oxidative stress in RPE. It is hypothesized that EPO will have a positive impact on suppressing oxidative stress and ferroptosis-mediated RPE degeneration due to its vital role in apoptosis …

Allele-Specific Vitamin D Receptor Binding Is Associated With Pediatric-Onset Multiple Sclerosis, Defne Yilmaz, Soe Mar, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The genetic basis of adult-onset multiple sclerosis (MS) is well-studied, but less is known about pediatric-onset MS (pedMS), comprising approximately 5% of all MS onsets. Mendelian randomization (MR) studies have demonstrated evidence for a causal association between MS and both 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] serum levels and genetic variation related to vitamin D receptor (VDR) binding. The objective was to identify whether VDR binding variants (VDR-BVs) previously implicated in adult-onset MS were associated with pedMS using genetic instrumental variables (GIVs).

METHODS: Using previously identified VDR-BVs to construct individual GIVs with two-sample MR, we investigated associations with pedMS in …

Restrictive housing imposes isolation in austere conditions on people who commit serious rule violations or are too dangerous (or endangered) to house in the general prison population. We contribute to a growing body of scholarship analyzing restrictive housing placements, asking how gang membership, race/ethnicity, and misconduct interact to predict placement and lengths of stay. We integrate analysis of qualitative interviews with a random sample of 106 people in long-term solitary confinement in 2017 with analysis of 15 years of administrative data, both from Washington state prisons. We find that official gang labels “stick” to people, amplifying their risk of solitary …

Biofilms are an important colonization mechanism employed by several microbial species to better establish themselves and monopolize the acquisition of resources across different environs. Some bacteria have evolved specialized metabolites that, when secreted, disrupt the formation and stability of biofilms generated by competing heterospecies, providing the producing organism with an ecological advantage. Soil-derived species are probable candidates for the identification of such compounds, given the intense level of competition that occurs within the terrestrial ecosystem. The MS14 strain of Burkholderia contaminans isolated from soil in Mississippi has previously been shown to produce antimicrobial compounds like occidiofungin and ornibactin. In this …
