Conversational Incident Reporting Using A Large Language Model, Chaim Zucker, Nitzan Jaitman, Alon Segal

Defensive Publications Series

Some digital map applications include road incident reporting features that enable users to report incidents along a path that a user is traveling on. Such features require specific phrasing or manual selection of options on a device screen which can be cumbersome and distracting. This disclosure describes techniques that enable intuitive and safe road-incident reporting using hands-free, free-form natural language conversations within a digital map application. A reporting button on the user interface (or spoken command) of a digital map application enables users to start the reporting of incidents. A large language model is deployed to interpret the spoken incident …

Adaptive Decision Engine Using Large Language Models And Configurable Schema, Gunalan S, Akshatha B

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes a framework to automate complex decisions by combining the strengths of human-defined logic with insights derived from large language models (LLMs). Human decision-makers define templates, known as ‘decision models’ or ‘decision schema,’ for the structure and the core logic of the decision-making process. The templates are augmented or populated using output derived from LLM analysis. The LLM can be used to provide insights, generate text, or fill in specific parts of a pre-defined template, thereby enhancing the human-designed logic. The framework uses the completed, LLM-enhanced templates to automate decisions efficiently and transparently. Effectively, LLMs augment and structure …

Modeling And Predicting Momentum In Tennis Games, Patrick Baldwin-Mccurdy, Alexander Habib, Abey Joseph Jun 2025

Modeling And Predicting Momentum In Tennis Games, Patrick Baldwin-Mccurdy, Alexander Habib, Abey Joseph

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

As if being the first Wimbledon winner in over 20 years whose name wasn’t Djokovic, Federer, Murray, or Nadal wasn’t enough, Carlos Alcaraz’s victory was even more astonishing considering he came back after being handily dealt with by Djokovic in the first set of the final 1-6. Alcaraz’s miraculous recovery might be explained by a shift of flow in the game in his favor. In this paper, we compare two models that both interpret a small amount of past data within a given tennis match to determine which player has the current advantage, or “flow,” in the next game. We …

Applications Of Enhanced Adaptive Leadership Strategies To Multilingual Language Events In K-5 Classrooms, Davie A. Ross Jun 2025

Applications Of Enhanced Adaptive Leadership Strategies To Multilingual Language Events In K-5 Classrooms, Davie A. Ross

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

This project triangulates my passions for literacy, language, and teaching around the question, “How can the experiences of students on the linguistic margins of “English-only” classrooms (classrooms where lessons are taught in one dominant language—English) inform and affirm methods for teacher preparation that benefit Multilingual Learners (MLLs)?” This article review demonstrates how Adaptive Leadership Theory—in particular, the framework of observation, interpretation, and intervention—can be used to diagnose and respond to common communication and literacy challenges faced by educators in their work with multilingual students. Engaging a scenario-based approach grounded in the practice of Linguistic Ideological Clarity (LIC), this paper interweaves …

Reframing Fat: Identifying Compulsory Thinness And The Role Of Discourse And Media In Its Perpetuation, Anabella Vucci Jun 2025

Reframing Fat: Identifying Compulsory Thinness And The Role Of Discourse And Media In Its Perpetuation, Anabella Vucci

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

Drawing on Judith Butler’s framework of compulsory heterosexuality, as well as Robert McRuer’s use of this framework in his own theory of compulsory able-bodiedness, this paper critiques the notion that thinness is merely a beauty standard. Rather, this paper argues that thinness is a marker of superiority that requires the subordination of fat individuals and is upheld by the historically informed, albeit fabricated, narrative that being thin is right. This paper asserts that thinness is compulsory—required from all bodies that are held to an unattainable standard of perfect thinness. Further, this paper examines the role that media play in the …

How Far-Right Populism Harms Ethnic Minorities’ Health: The Case Of The United States, Dina Rosenberg Jun 2025

How Far-Right Populism Harms Ethnic Minorities’ Health: The Case Of The United States, Dina Rosenberg

Working Papers Series

Public health is a political issue, and the health of ethnic minorities is a key component of it. We argue that far-right populism, whether grassroots or elitist, harms the health of immigrants and minorities. Anti-minority attitudes and policies—such as health chauvinism promoted by far-right populists—along with hate rhetoric and ensuing personal and institutional discrimination create a climate of hostility that negatively affects health outcomes in underprivileged communities. We hypothesize that immigrants and ethnic minorities living in such a climate are more likely to experience health problems and underutilize healthcare. To test this, we leverage the significant variation between U.S. states …

Development Of A Low-Cost Electron Microscope For Educational Purposes, Christopher Halseth

Dissertations and Theses

Electron microscopy is a powerful tool for exploring microscopic world, yet its high cost and operational complexity severely limit accessibility, particularly within educational institutions. Commercial systems are often designed as opaque "black boxes," further hindering hands-on learning and experimentation. This dissertation introduces the Educational Scanning/Transmission Electron Microscope (EduSEM), a project designed to overcome these barriers by developing a low-cost, modular, and transparent electron microscope optimized for educational use.

The EduSEM achieves significant cost reduction by operating in a rough vacuum environment (1-20 mTorr), eliminating the need for expensive high-vacuum pumps. This necessitates novel component designs tolerant of higher pressures. The …
