Dementia spousal caregivers are at a disproportionate risk for adverse mental and physical health outcomes. Loneliness is associated with depressive symptoms and proinflammatory cytokine production among caregivers. Additionally, childhood trauma, anticipatory grief, and poor sleep quality are all associated with enhanced stress reactivity. This study used a cross-sectional design to investigate whether loneliness is associated with proinflammatory cytokine production and depressive symptoms in caregivers, and whether these relationships are strongest among caregivers who report high levels of childhood trauma, high amounts of anticipatory grief, or poor sleep quality. A sample of 111 dementia spousal caregivers provided blood samples and completed …

Do Emotion Malleability Beliefs Buffer Social Ostracism? An Experimental Investigation, Bingjie Tong Jun 2025

Do Emotion Malleability Beliefs Buffer Social Ostracism? An Experimental Investigation, Bingjie Tong

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Social ostracism is linked to adverse psychological outcomes, including increased suicide risk among college students. This study examined a manipulation targeting emotion malleability beliefs and its effect on psychological outcomes after a lab-induced social ostracism task (Cyberball). Psychache, a well-established predictor for suicide risk, was examined as a potential moderator variable. College students (N = 243) were randomly assigned to either an experimental condition, which presented information stating that emotions are malleable, or a neutral control condition. Participants in the experimental condition reported a greater increase in beliefs about emotional malleability, greater use of cognitive reappraisal, and less perceived burdensomeness …

Ai-Enabled System For Efficient Data Storage, Debdeep Bandyopadhyay, Alok Roy, Prajna Shetty

Defensive Publications Series

The present disclosure relates to methods and systems for efficiently storing data based on reinforcement learning and actor-critic models. An agent, comprising a “chunking actor” and a “redundancy critic” can segment various types of computer files into “dynamic segments” and “redundant segments” and store those segments in a dynamic datastore and a redundant datastore respectively. In general terms, redundant segments can comprise segments of files that exist “redundantly” among multiple files stored by the system, such as header information. Dynamic data segments can comprise data segments that are unique or generally unique to their respective files. By identifying redundant data …

Defensive Publications Series

Head-mounted augmented, virtual, and extended reality devices (AR/VR/XR HMDs, also known as smartglasses) are subject to deformation when worn by users. Deformation is a change in the device state or shape such that the device is no longer well described by factory calibration parameters to the detriment of user experience. This disclosure describes online or in-field calibration techniques to re-calibrate a head-mounted AR/VR/XR device in response to deformation. The techniques include determining the as-worn deformation state via device sensors and/or user input and updating the device calibration to compensate for the deformation. Updating device calibration entails determining calibration parameters as …

Graph-Based Ai Compiler, Rhodes Floyd Davis Jr. Jun 2025

Graph-Based Ai Compiler, Rhodes Floyd Davis Jr.

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes compiler-based techniques of automatic code generation using large language models (LLMs). In contrast to traditional LLM-based code generation, which uses context windows of limited lengths and which stores context globally and not on a per-file basis, the described techniques leverage the graph structure of the codebase to store context. A node of the graph is collapsed to code when all its dependencies are collapsed as well. A prompt is converted to code by collapsing each node to code. The techniques work well for software projects of arbitrary sizes, including projects with very large codebases. In contrast to …

Fair Or Unfair? Customer Reactions To Restaurant Pricing And Disclosure, Hyun-Woo (David) Joung, Hayeon (Hailey) Choi, Eun-Kyong (Cindy) Choi

ICHRIE Research Reports

Amid rising inflation and operating cost pressure, this study investigates how restaurant pricing strategies—a 5% surcharge versus a 5% menu price increase—and prior disclosure affect customers' perceptions of price fairness and transparency. Utilizing a 2 (pricing strategy: surcharge vs. price increase) × 2 (disclosure: presence vs. absence) experimental design, 193 responses were collected via a scenario-based survey. Results revealed that customers perceive a 5% price increase as significantly fairer and more transparent than a surcharge. While prior disclosure signage did not significantly influence perceptions of fairness, it marginally improved transparency, especially with the surcharge strategy. These findings suggest that restaurants …

The Common Law And Sec Rule 10b-5(B): Narrowing The Securities "Fraud" Exception To The First Amendment, Matthew Lambertson Jun 2025

The Common Law And Sec Rule 10b-5(B): Narrowing The Securities "Fraud" Exception To The First Amendment, Matthew Lambertson

Florida Law Review

Courts have read Section 10(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and regulations promulgated thereunder as requiring less than every element of common law fraud. In particular, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Rule 10b-5(b), which prohibits merely false or misleading statements about securities, often proscribes and deters speech that does not constitute common law fraud. Namely, in prosecuting a Rule 10b-5(b) claim, the SEC currently does not need to prove reliance, causation, and harm—three essential elements of common law fraud. Though the First Amendment generally protects false speech, it does not shield fraud. Upon adopting the First Amendment, …

Katz'S Imperfect Circle: An Empirical Study Of Reasonable Expectations Of Privacy, Tonja Jacobi, Christopher Brett Jaeger

Florida Law Review

Under Katz v. United States, the Fourth Amendment restricts government actions that infringe upon expectations of privacy that society recognizes as reasonable. This foundational test has long been criticized as circular, both because courts can shape the very expectations they seek to identify through their decisions and because governments can manipulate those expectations to expand the reach of their own power. But how do members of society decide what expectations are reasonable, and how do judges ascertain those expectations? And are expectations of privacy malleable even without deliberate manipulation?

This Article shows that the circularity critique is both understated …

The Originalist Case Against The Insular Cases, Michael D. Ramsey Jun 2025

The Originalist Case Against The Insular Cases, Michael D. Ramsey

Florida Law Review

Concurring in United States v. Vaello Madero, Justice Neil Gorsuch argued that the Insular Cases are contrary to the Constitution’s original meaning and should be overruled. The Supreme Court’s decisions in the Insular Cases, which created a second-class constitutional status for U.S. overseas territories, have also been criticized by leading originalist scholars such as Professors Gary Lawson and Michael Paulsen. However, there is no fully developed scholarly assessment of the Insular Cases from an originalist perspective; their inconsistency with an originalist approach is more assumed than proven. This Article fills that gap. Using the methodology of original public …

The Big Cost Of Small Farms, Tammi S. Etheridge Jun 2025

The Big Cost Of Small Farms, Tammi S. Etheridge

Florida Law Review

Americans love meat. We celebrate our independence with steaks on the grill, we enjoy our favorite pastime with hot dogs, and we give thanks with turkey. Our love of meat is so ingrained in our culture that, historically, small increases in meat prices have driven the populace to riot. Today, meat prices are rising. Simultaneously, the largest meat processors and packagers are seeing record profits. Consumers, in turn, are outraged. Their emotions are being fueled by politicians who blame rising profits on a pandemic of greed and collusion and then argue that rigid antitrust enforcement is the only solution.

This …

The Future Of Antitrust Populism, Herbert Hovenkamp Jun 2025

The Future Of Antitrust Populism, Herbert Hovenkamp

Florida Law Review

During the Biden Administration a form of populism staked a claim in American antitrust policy. While it never had much impact on Congress or the federal judiciary, it had a powerful presence in the antitrust enforcement agencies. This populist antimonopoly movement provided few new ideas, however. Rather, it recycled policies from a half-century or more ago. These include moving merger policy back to the 1960s, resurrecting the often-rejected idea that antitrust should be concerned about “bigness” rather than high prices, reviving the Robinson-Patman Act of the 1930s–1970s, reinstating aggressive per se rules against vertical restraints that were applied in the …

Extending Instruction Set Architecture To Include Indirect Branch Hints, Na Jun 2025

Extending Instruction Set Architecture To Include Indirect Branch Hints, Na

Defensive Publications Series

To fetch and execute instructions ahead of time, processors try to predict the outcome of conditional branch instructions before they actually execute. A correct prediction allows a pre-computed result to be used instead of waiting to execute the instruction, thereby speeding up program execution. With indirect branches, the target is unknown until runtime, making prediction much harder. This disclosure describes techniques to improve the outcome of processor speculation by extending the instruction set architecture (ISA) to include a hint instruction that indicates the most likely address of the next indirect jump. The hardware may use the information provided in the …

No Eyes In The Skies: State Of Alaska V. Mckelvey’S Impact On Aerial Surveillance In Alaska, Lauren Beizer, Johanna Crisman

Alaska Law Review

Alaska contains a dynamic and complex aviation culture. As one of the most visually captivating places on earth, Alaska also hosts enthralling scenery that could be deemed a photographer’s dream landscape, creating an interesting desire for aerial capture of certain scenes. The Alaska Supreme Court considered whether Alaska’s unique aviation culture, in conjunction with aerial police surveillance, infringes on residents’ right to privacy in State of Alaska v. McKelvey. While the United States Constitution contains no express right to privacy, the Alaskan Constitution explicitly ensures that the right to privacy of Alaskan residents will not be infringed upon. The United …

Does Retrieval Demand Moderate The Effectiveness Of Covert Retrieval Practice? Comparing Covert And Overt Retrieval Practice For Learning Key Terms And Definitions, Michelle L. Rivers, Paige E. Northern Jun 2025

Does Retrieval Demand Moderate The Effectiveness Of Covert Retrieval Practice? Comparing Covert And Overt Retrieval Practice For Learning Key Terms And Definitions, Michelle L. Rivers, Paige E. Northern

Psychology

Prior research suggests that the effectiveness of retrieval practice may be moderated by response format: overt retrieval (e.g., typing a response) outperforms covert retrieval (e.g., mentally recalling a response) for complex materials like definitions, but both forms of retrieval are equally effective for simple materials like single words. These differences are explained by the retrieval dynamics hypothesis, which posits that retrieving a single unit of information is relatively automatic and easy, while retrieving multiple interconnected units (e.g., definitions) is more demanding and may not be exhaustive when done covertly. In two experiments, undergraduates studied either key terms or definitions …

La « Novlangue » Managériale Dans Le Discours Institutionnel De L’Éducation Et De La Formation Professionnelle À L’Ère De La Bonne Gouvernance – Analyse Pluridisciplinaire, Youssef Aboudi

Al-Kīmiyā

Today’s globalization imposes, more than ever, exchanges between peoples and states. Consequently, the need for openness to others, which translates into listening and communicating, justifies, in many cases, the learning of languages spoken by foreign peoples. As a result, several languages with different statuses can coexist in the same country. Aligning with this general trend of globalization, Saudi Arabia has gradually integrated the learning of French into its educational and university system, even opening departments dedicated to the translation of this language. This study questions the correlation between the status conferred to French and the learning of translation. In other …

Quantum-Chemical Modeling Of Mechanisms And Selectivity In Open-Shell Organometallic Reactions, Michael T. Davenport Jun 2025

Quantum-Chemical Modeling Of Mechanisms And Selectivity In Open-Shell Organometallic Reactions, Michael T. Davenport

Theses and Dissertations

Quantum mechanical calculations have emerged as a powerful approach for directly evaluating reaction mechanisms and selectivity in transition metal-ligand complexes involving organometallic intermediates. Density functional theory (DFT) quantum mechanical methods enable the generation of potential energy surfaces and structures that define reaction mechanisms and allow for the evaluation of selectivity through statistical transition state theory. However, in certain cases, it is necessary to go beyond statistical treatments and incorporate atomic motion through molecular dynamics simulations. Additionally, many transition metal-mediated reactions involve unpaired electrons and spin state crossings. This dissertation focuses on the application of DFT-derived potential energy surfaces and molecular …

Evaluating A Web-Based Training To Teach Behavioral Analysis Students To Implement Behavioral Skills Training, Kate N. Gray Jun 2025

Evaluating A Web-Based Training To Teach Behavioral Analysis Students To Implement Behavioral Skills Training, Kate N. Gray

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have found that behavioral skills training (BST) is often an effective strategy when teaching safety skills to children and adults with and without developmental disabilities. Despite BST being an effective intervention to teach safety skills, it requires substantial time from trained behavior analysts to implement with fidelity. Trainee-implemented BST may allow many children to access high-quality safety skills training while not requiring the presence of a behavior analyst. A web-based module may be a cost-effective and easily accessible option for parents, teachers, or Registered Behavior Technicians to teach children these safety skills. The researcher used a nonconcurrent multiple baseline …

Cancer cachexia (CC) is marked by severe skeletal muscle loss and dysfunction, associated with mitochondrial degeneration. Our previous studies showed induction of the mitophagy marker BNIP3 3-wk post-Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) induction. We hypothesize that excessive mitophagy contributes to muscle wasting in CC. To test this, we used a Bnip3 knockout (KO) mouse model with LLC-induced CC to assess its impact on muscle outcomes. Eight-wk-old male and female mice were injected with 1 x 10(6) LLC cells or PBS (sham controls). After 4 wk, we assessed muscle function through dorsiflexor electrophysiology, muscle protein synthesis via deuterium oxide labeling, and mitochondrial …

The United States invests billions of dollars annually to perform stream restoration projects, yet few studies have investigated the effects this ecosystem manipulation has on nutrient cycling and associated water quality. Water quality improvement remains a substantial motivation for mitigating catchment-scale disturbances, especially in urban streams. Various urban land use practices impact the transfer and transport of nutrients such as soluble reactive phosphorus, ammonium, and nitrate plus nitrite from land into the streams and rivers. The uptake length (Sw), or the distance a dissolved nutrient travels downstream within a stream reach, can be measured using short-term nutrient injections, where shorter …
