Through The Eyes Of A Guard: Watson Kirkconnell And Great War Internment In Canada, Daniel R. Meister
Through The Eyes Of A Guard: Watson Kirkconnell And Great War Internment In Canada, Daniel R. Meister
Canadian Military History
Histories of internment in Canada have paid much attention to internees’ experiences but far less to those of the guards. Correcting this trend, this article offers a detailed case study of one soldier, Watson Kirkconnell, who worked at the Fort Henry and Kapuskasing internment camps. Drawing on his valuable but heretofore unutilised archive of material, this article provides a vivid social history of the camps through Kirkconnell’s eyes. Nuancing the historiography of wartime internment, this article demonstrates how commandants determined the experiences of both internees and guards alike and, at the same time, that staff could sometimes mitigate their superior’s …
The Fear Of Being Unknown: First World War Identification Discs In The Canadian War Museum’S Collection, Brittany Dunn
The Fear Of Being Unknown: First World War Identification Discs In The Canadian War Museum’S Collection, Brittany Dunn
Canadian Military History
Abstract : The Canadian War Museum holds nearly 250 identification discs from Canadian soldiers and nurses of the First World War. Identification discs were objects of bureaucracy, designed to ensure accurate record keeping of the dead and their places of burial. But these discs were more than just an administrative tool, they represented the hopes and fears of soldiers and their loved ones—the hope of being identified in death and the fear of being one of the missing. Military authorities understood the importance of a known grave to soldiers and their families so burial policy evolved over the war to …

Enhancing Fault Tolerance In Tmr Soft Risc-V Fpga Socs Through Failure-Driven Mitigation Strategies, Andrew Elbert Wilson
Enhancing Fault Tolerance In Tmr Soft Risc-V Fpga Socs Through Failure-Driven Mitigation Strategies, Andrew Elbert Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) leveraging soft processors, particularly those implementing the open-standard RISC-V Instruction Set Architecture (ISA), are increasingly important for space missions due to their adaptability and reconfigurability. However, their susceptibility to radiation-induced Single Event Upsets (SEUs) presents significant reliability challenges, necessitating robust fault-tolerant strategies such as Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR). This dissertation evaluates the effectiveness of TMR-based mitigation techniques for Linux-capable soft RISC-V System-on-Chip (SoC) implementations deployed on SRAM-based FPGAs operating in high-radiation environments. Using a combination of deterministic fault injection and neutron radiation testing, this work identifies critical residual single-point failure modes that persist in TMR-protected designs. …

Evaluating Behavioral Skills Training To Teach Salsa Dancing Skills To Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder And/Or Intellectual Disabilities, Joshua I. Nieves
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research has demonstrated behavioral skills training (BST) to be an effective teaching procedure for acquisition of a variety of skills among both neurotypical and neurodiverse individuals across different ages. Moreover, recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of BST for enhancing sports performance when training neurotypical children and adults. However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of BST for enhancing sports performance, and specifically dance performance, among individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or intellectual disabilities (ID). Dance is a recreational activity that can serve as a form of physical activity for children and adults. Salsa is a Latin style …
Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning (Hrl) In Multi-Goal Spatial Navigation With Autonomous Mobile Robots, Brendon Johnson
Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning (Hrl) In Multi-Goal Spatial Navigation With Autonomous Mobile Robots, Brendon Johnson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Hierarchical reinforcement learning (HRL) is hypothesized to be able to take advantage of the inherent hierarchy in robot learning tasks with sparse reward schemes, in contrast to more traditional reinforcement learning algorithms. In this research, hierarchical reinforcement learning is evaluated and contrasted with standard reinforcement learning in complex navigation tasks. We evaluate unique characteristics of HRL, including their ability to create sub-goals and the termination function. We constructed experiments to test the differences between PPO and HRL, different ways of creating sub-goals, manual vs automatic sub-goal creation, and the effects of the frequency of termination on performance. These experiments highlight …
The Impact Of Blood-Based Biomarkers And Disease-Modifying Medications On Anticipated Reactions Of Learning Alzheimer Disease Risk Information, Matthew Charles Picchiello
The Impact Of Blood-Based Biomarkers And Disease-Modifying Medications On Anticipated Reactions Of Learning Alzheimer Disease Risk Information, Matthew Charles Picchiello
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, the Alzheimer disease (AD) field has seen significant advancements, including the development of blood-based biomarker (BBBM) tests for risk assessment and the approval of new disease-modifying therapies. These innovations are rapidly reshaping the landscape of clinical care. However, public understanding and attitudes toward these developments remain unclear. To address this gap, the present study used a vignette-based, cross-sectional survey grounded in the Health Belief Model (HBM) to examine older adults’ awareness, knowledge, and anticipated reactions to BBBM testing and novel AD treatments. A nationally representative sample of 450 adults (aged 55+) in terms of race, ethnicity, and …

An Autistic “Linguatype”? Neologisms, New Words, And New Insights, Emily Zane, Rhiannon Luyster
An Autistic “Linguatype”? Neologisms, New Words, And New Insights, Emily Zane, Rhiannon Luyster
Emerson Authors, Researchers, & Creators
In this commentary, we present new ideas about autistic neologisms. This essay has two primary goals. First, we argue that an autistic predilection to form neologisms generates intriguing new hypotheses about language in autism, including the possibility that a tendency to use neologisms could be a featural element of an autistic “linguatype” (as in “phenotype”). Second, we suggest that the study of neologism meaning, form, and use can yield insights about a specific speaker and about autistic language, generally. To support both aims, we present the largest collection to date of autistic neologisms. We supply an initial framework for considering …

Impact Of Multiple Climate Stressors On Early Life Stages Of North Pacific Kelp Species, Veronica Farrugia Drakard, Jordan A. Hollarsmith, Michael Stekoll
Faculty, Staff, and Students
This study examines the effects on bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana) and ribbon kelp (Alaria marginata) of combinations of three climate-related stressors relevant to high-latitude kelp forests: temperature, salinity, and sediment load. Fertile specimens of both species were collected from Juneau, Alaska. Spores produced were cultivated over 40 days in four ecologically relevant stressor treatments: control (all stressor levels normal; CTRL), increased glacial melt (normal temperature, low salinity, high sediment load; GLAC), increased runoff (high temperature, low salinity, normal sediment load; MELT) and climate change (high temperature, low salinity, high sediment load; CLIM). Gametophyte density in both species was reduced in …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: This study aimed to report the 5-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO).
Materials and methods: A retrospective review of patient charts was conducted. Data on central macular thickness (CMT), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), photoreceptor integrity, number of intravitreal (IV) antivascular endothelial growth factor (anti- VEGF) injections administered, and treatment regimen were assessed.
Results: Ninety-seven eyes from individual patients with a mean age of 70.90 ± 11.49 (38–92) were included. The mean BCVA improved, and the mean CMT decreased at all follow-up visits following treatment (p < 0.05). Thirty-two eyes (33%) gained 3 lines of BCVA at the five-year follow-up. The mean number of total IV anti-VEGF injections administered was 19 ± 13.35 (1–49) during the five-year period, and 27.83% of patients received rescue laser treatment. Fifty-four percent of eyes received three consecutive monthly loading doses of IV anti-VEGF injections. The mean change in BCVA in the loading dose (+) group was significantly greater than in the loading dose (–) group at 1-year and subsequent visits. The loading dose (+) group showed a significantly greater reduction in CMT compared to the loading dose (–) group. The mean estimated time for BCVA to decline by ≥3 lines was 117 ± 8.74 months (95% CI = 100.21–134.51)
Conclusion: Anti-VEGF treatment was effective in improving anatomical …

Incremental Planar Nearest Neighbor Queries With Optimal Query Time, John Iacono, Yakov Nekrich
Michigan Tech Publications
In this paper we show that two-dimensional nearest neighbor queries can be answered in optimal O(log n) time while supporting insertions in O(log1+ϵ n) time. No previous data structure was known that supports O(log n)-time queries and polylog-time insertions. In order to achieve logarithmic queries our data structure uses a new technique related to fractional cascading that leverages the inherent geometry of this problem. Our method can be also used in other semi-dynamic scenarios.
Applying Ceragenins In Translational Medicine: Activating Mesenchymal Stem Cells And Preventing Healthcare-Associated Infections, Aaron L. Zaugg
Applying Ceragenins In Translational Medicine: Activating Mesenchymal Stem Cells And Preventing Healthcare-Associated Infections, Aaron L. Zaugg
Theses and Dissertations
Healthcare-associated infections are a major global concern. Increased infections among vulnerable populations lead to millions of deaths, annually, complicated by the emergence of multi-drug resistant pathogens. These infections are often facilitated by medical devices serving as abiotic surfaces that facilitate the formation of biofilms. Notably, colonization of prostheses and other bone-associated medical devices can lead to corrective procedures, revisions and death. To address these issues, inspiration can be drawn from natural sources of bone health and defenses against infection. Cathelicidins are endogenous peptides involved in both bone maintenance and infection control. Ceragenins are small molecule mimics of cathelicidins with broad …
Relation Between Executive Functions, Ruminative Thinking Style, And Internalizing Symptoms In Neurodivergent Individuals., John Strom
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
Introduction: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) are among the most common psychological disorders occurring in childhood (Bishop, 2010; Scandurra et al., 2019), and are commonly associated with a host of psychological challenges including deficits in executive functioning (Craig et al., 2016; Demetriou et al., 2019) as well as comorbid internalizing disorders such as depression and anxiety (Katzman et al., 2017; Kirsch et al., 2020; Simonoff et al., 2008). Research has suggested that executive function deficits may contribute to symptoms of depression and anxiety and that this relation may be mediated by ruminative thinking styles (Snyder et al., 2019; von Hippel et al., …

Social connection has been declining across the general population (i.e., the “loneliness epidemic”), though some groups, including military personnel, are experiencing particularly high rates. This has led to calls for a multilevel national strategy, including workplaces, to build social connection (U.S. Surgeon General, 2023). To answer this call, the present study draws on the wise intervention approach (Walton, 2014), multidimensional model of social connection (Holt-Lunstad, 2022), and models of the bidirectional relationship between sleep health and relationship functioning (Gordon et al., 2017; Troxel et al., 2007), to deliver a workplace intervention that builds social connection for military employees and their …

Purpose: Tumor Protein 53 (p53) expressed from gene TP53 is a seminal tumor suppressor. We aimed to characterize mutational and nonmutational mechanisms of p53 dysfunction in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and to investigate their clinical effect.
Patients and methods: We analyzed a cohort of 6,204 patients with MDS and subsets of patients with available information on RNA sequencing of tumor cells (n = 109), high-dimensional phenotype of immune cells (n = 77), and multiomics analysis (RNA sequencing and proteomics) on single cells (n = 15). An independent validation was performed on 914 patients.
Results: Biallelic TP53 inactivation was a powerful driver …

Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) have greatly improved survival of cancer patients harboring BRCA1 mutations. However, therapy resistance develops via either restoration of homologous recombination or replication fork stabilization. Therapeutic targets to overcome PARPi resistance are critically needed. We identified the deubiquitinase USP37 as a key determinant of PARPi toxicity in BRCA1-deficient cells via whole-genome CRISPR screens. USP37 ablation enhanced PARPi sensitivity in BRCA1-deficient cells and also overcame PARPi resistance due to 53BP1 loss. USP37 interacts with and deubiquitinates replication protein A (RPA) at stalled replication forks to limit excessive RPA accumulation, progressive RPA exhaustion, and the conversion of RPA-coated single-stranded …

Mature tRNAs and rRNAs are derived from larger precursor transcripts through intricate endo- and exonuclease processing steps. Here, we present a protocol to analyze rRNA and tRNA processing using total RNA extracted from human cells. We describe steps for separating RNA by denaturing electrophoresis, followed by northern blotting. We detail procedures for detecting pre-rRNA intermediates or specific tRNA species using biotin-labeled probes imaged via fluorescence or chemiluminescence. This non-radioactive, high-sensitivity assay enables the investigation of rRNA and tRNA expression dynamics. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Hwang et al.

Background/aim: To evaluate the short-term efficacy and safety of nondamaging retinal laser therapy (NRT) for retinitis pigmentosa-associated cystoid macular edema (RP-CME) and analyze anatomical and functional outcomes.
Materials and methods: A retrospective case series of 40 eyes from 30 patients with RP-CME was conducted. The patients underwent NRT using a PASCAL laser system with endpoint management (EpM) software. Central macular thickness (CMT) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were assessed at baseline and 2 months posttreatment. Long-term follow-up data, including recurrence rates were also reviewed.
Results: At the 2-month follow-up, NRT significantly reduced mean CMT by 79.7 μm (p < 0.001) and improved BCVA by 0.10 LogMAR (p < 0.001). Complete resolution of CME was observed in 30% of the eyes, while 52.5% experienced recurrence within 6 months. Unilateral cases exhibited greater CMT reductions than bilateral cases (p < 0.05). No retinal damage from the laser was observed. The long-term sustainability of these effects remains unclear, and repeated treatments have not yet been assessed.
Conclusion: NRT …

Background/aim: Injection neuropathy (IN) is a rare but preventable form of iatrogenic nerve injury, particularly affecting the sciatic nerve when intramuscular injections are administered incorrectly. While IN is uncommon in high-income countries, it remains a sig- nificant public health issue in Türkiye, especially in pediatric populations. The aim of this study is to evaluate pediatric IN cases referred to the Council of Forensic Medicine and highlight medicolegal aspects to inform clinical and legal preventive strategies.
Materials and methods: We retrospectively analyzed 67 pediatric cases (age range: 1–17 years; mean age: 10.5 years; 57 boys, 10 girls) referred to the Council …
