Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) infection infects human alveolar macrophages (HAMs). In freshly isolated HAMs from 28 healthy adults, we observe large inter-individual differences in bacterial uptake and growth, with tenfold variation in M.tb load by 72 h. While M.tb infection triggers expression changes of numerous host mRNAs, we examined which genes are most variably expressed (VE genes) between donors, as potential biomarkers of individual tuberculosis (TB) risk. The HAM RNA transcriptome following infection revealed thousands of differentially expressed (DE) genes and differential secretion of 25/27 proteins. Yet only 324 DE genes represent VE genes detected exclusively among DE genes in …

Background: People who use drugs (PWUD) often lack access to optimal harm reduction and substance use disorder treatment tools. Tracking the epidemiology of acute care utilization by PWUD is crucial to improving systems of care. Chart reviews and International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes are the most common systems of identifying hospitalizations of PWUD but are limited by high labor costs and inaccuracy. This study evaluates whether natural language processing (NLP) enhances the sensitivity and specificity of ICD-10 codes in identifying hospitalizations of PWUD.
Methods: We analyzed admissions at Tufts Medical Center between 2018 and 2023. Two NLP …

The binaural interaction component (BIC) of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) is obtained by subtracting a binaurally-evoked ABR from the sum of monaural left and right ear ABRs. BIC amplitude is modulated by interaural time differences (ITDs) and has been proposed as a biomarker of binaural hearing ability. Traditionally, clicks are used to evoke ABRs; however, chirps are recommended to compensate for the cochlear traveling wave and enhance wave V. Whether chirps improve BIC measurements has not been systematically examined. Here, ABRs and BICs were measured in subjects (n = 6; 21-29 years) for three stimuli; 1) 100-µsec clicks, 2) …
Gatekeeper Training As A Form Of Suicide Prevention: An Evaluation Of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (Asist), Sarah E. Pardue-Bourgeois
Gatekeeper Training As A Form Of Suicide Prevention: An Evaluation Of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (Asist), Sarah E. Pardue-Bourgeois
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is the most widely used gatekeeper training (McAuliffe & Perry, 2007) and the literature examining its effects shows strong support for self-reported changes in attitudes and knowledge regarding suicide, and confidence to intervene with a person with thoughts of suicide (Gould et al., 2013; Shannonhouse et al., 2017a; Shannonhouse et al., 2017b; Shannonhouse et al., 2019). However, no research currently exists that investigates whether individuals trained in ASIST can provide the suicide-specific intervention skills post-training. Thus, the current study sought to extend the current literature by broadly investigating the following aims. Study aims investigated …
Devil In Heaven: The Role Of Matt Murdock's Parents And Friends In The Creation Of Daredevil's Identity, Marco Favaro
Devil In Heaven: The Role Of Matt Murdock's Parents And Friends In The Creation Of Daredevil's Identity, Marco Favaro
Heroism Science
Traumas and losses mark superheroes´ lives from the beginning. Often orphans, superheroes start their journey with the loss of a paternal or maternal figure. This tragedy destroys their previous world and identity, but it also gives them a purpose. The superhero character, Daredevil, is no exception; he experiences loss and pain, too. Matt Murdock’s life is marked by the death of many people close to him, starting with the loss of his father, which leaves the deepest scar on him. The assumption of the "super" identity is necessary to replace the previous one, shattered by the trauma suffered. Matt, traumatized, …

Enhancing Education In Nursing Skills: The Impact Of Simulation Use On Faculty Self -Efficacy, Annie Kyle
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to improve nursing faculty self-efficacy in teaching nursing skills using medium- and high-fidelity simulation. The problem addressed was the increasing number of students requiring multiple attempts to pass skills checkoffs, with some ultimately being withdrawn from the program. Faculty at the project site reported a lack of training and confidence in utilizing simulation technology effectively. A quasi-experimental design was used with a single group of full-time faculty (n=6), who received simulation training and completed the Self-Efficacy Towards Teaching Inventory for Nurse Educators (SETTI-NE) before and after the intervention. The data analysis was conducted using …
Improving Patient Outcomes Post-Discharge: Implementing Evidence-Based Discharge Planning For High-Risk Mental Health And Substance Use Disorder Populations, Margaret Phillips
Improving Patient Outcomes Post-Discharge: Implementing Evidence-Based Discharge Planning For High-Risk Mental Health And Substance Use Disorder Populations, Margaret Phillips
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
A significant gap in standardized discharge procedures was identified at a nonprofit, community-based clinic serving male residential patients with substance use disorder (SUD) and co-occurring mental health conditions. The lack of a standardized discharge process led to poor follow-up appointment adherence, poor medication adherence and increased risk of relapse. This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to address these issues through the implementation of a cross-departmental discharge process that produced tailored Individualized Discharge Plans (IDP) or each patient, using the Donabedian and Kotter’s 8-Step Change models as guiding frameworks. Data were collected using custom-built tracking tools over two four-week periods, pre- …

Learning is a lifelong process exercised within and beyond the classroom, and a vital skill in almost all technical professions. Engineers, in particular, are impacted by rapidly evolving technologies and practices that require continuous learning and adaptation long after their training and the initial transition into their professional careers. However, despite the critical role of learning in their academic success and profession, engineering students experience academically rigorous and challenging courses with minimal emphasis or conscious focus on learning strategies that power effective learning. Often-used learning strategies such as rereading, highlighting, repetition, and memorization are intuitive for many students, yet do …

Philosophy, despite its proclivities towards history and contextualization, often neglects to properly note various characteristics of ideas. In particular, there seems to be a kind of blindness to a key component of how ideas come into being: namely, the role of writing that leads to the preservation and transmission of ideas. Textbooks, for instance, are a key instrument for containing, disseminating, and archiving knowledge of a specific domain that can be used to introduce those complex concepts to newcomers and the unspecialized. As such, a textbook is an epistemic device used for transmitting a condensed constellation of ideas, concepts, formulas, …
The Impact Of The Chevron Ruling On Medicare, Sana Sherali
The Impact Of The Chevron Ruling On Medicare, Sana Sherali
DePaul Journal of Health Care Law
The Supreme Court’s historic decision to overturn the Chevron doctrine in June 2024 received national attention due to its implications for how much power agencies will hold in the years to come. The Chevron doctrine originally comes from the Supreme Court’s 1984 decision in Chevron, U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council.Chevron addressed the requirements imposed on states by The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1977. This decision set the precedent that if federal legislation is unclear or leaves an administrative gap, courts have to follow the regulatory agency’s interpretation of the law, as long as the interpretation is …

The Opioid Crisis: How The United States And Countries Abroad Are Making Strides, Maura Mcginnity
DePaul Journal of Health Care Law
The opioid epidemic has been an ongoing problem in the United States since the 1980s. The United States has had a very negative attitude towards individuals suffering from addiction. This attitude is clearly shown through the United States’ handling of the opioid crisis. Hundreds of thousands of individuals have died due to opioids. In the forty years since this epidemic became prevalent, the United States has still failed to implement a country-wide solution to combat the crisis. Certain states, like New York and Illinois, have made strides toward helping individuals suffering from opioid use disorder, but nationally, the country is …

Efficient Difference-In-Differences And Event Study Estimators, Xiaohong Chen, Pedro H. C. Sant’Anna, Haitian Xie
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper investigates efficient Difference-in-Differences (DiD) and Event Study (ES) estimation using short panel data sets within the heterogeneous treatment effect framework, free from parametric functional form assumptions and allowing for variation in treatment timing. We provide an equivalent characterization of the DiD potential outcome model using sequential conditional moment restrictions on observables, which shows that the DiD identification assumptions typically imply nonparametric overidentification restrictions. We derive the semiparametric efficient influence function (EIF) in closed form for DiD and ES causal parameters under commonly imposed parallel trends assumptions. The EIF is automatically Neyman orthogonal and yields the smallest variance among …
A Modern Approach To Classifying Medieval Latin Scripts, Robert L. Lane Jr, Rafia Mirza, Robert Slater
A Modern Approach To Classifying Medieval Latin Scripts, Robert L. Lane Jr, Rafia Mirza, Robert Slater
SMU Data Science Review
Paleography, the study of historical handwriting, is essential for preserving societal understanding of cultural, social, and legal frameworks from the past. Medieval manuscripts, often exhibiting refined craftsmanship, present unique challenges to modern readers due to differences in handwriting conventions and the absence of standardized punctuation and spaces. These texts hold valuable insights into the evolution of written communication, literacy, and language development. However, interpreting them requires specialized knowledge and technological solutions. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can be leveraged to classify scripts, an important step in Historical Document analysis. These models extract and analyze hierarchical features from images, addressing inconsistencies in …

Enhancing News Article Generation With Ai Tools, Adam Ercanbrack, Christopher Johnson, Max Pagan, Nibhrat Lohia
SMU Data Science Review
Abstract. This paper aims to present a comparative analysis of a custom-built AI Journalist Assistant and ChatGPT 4.0 for news article generation. The goal is to evaluate the performance of each model based on accuracy, speed, ethical safeguards, and relevance, particularly in the context of journalism. While ChatGPT is widely used for general-purpose content creation, its reliance on older data and potential for plagiarism presents challenges in the fast-paced, high-stakes world of news reporting. To address these issues, we will design and implement an AI Assistant using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) techniques, focusing on real-time data access, bias reduction, and plagiarism …

Context-Switch Attacks: Understanding And Mitigating The Threat To Llm Applications, Sydney Holder, Bivin Sadler
SMU Data Science Review
Large Language Models (LLMs) are transforming conversational AI, yet their dependence on prompt-supplied context exposes them to context-switch attacks that covertly steer dialogue toward sensitive or malicious ends. A 70 one-sided conversation transcript evaluation set was constructed spanning various fraudulent scenarios. Each transcript embeds adversarial patterns drawn while preserving natural conversational flow. We introduce a hybrid defense that pairs a BERT-based semantic-drift detector (cosine-similarity threshold = 0.70) with a curated keyword and hack-phrase scanner to counter these threats. In aggregate, the system delivered 100 % recall, intercepting every simulated phishing or data-harvesting attempt. The keyword layer achieved perfect precision, generating …

SMU Data Science Review
This paper presents the development of a secure voice authentication system that delivers an inclusive solution for all users, including those with disabilities. Leveraging a Text-Dependent Active Verification process, the system combines a spoken passphrase with voice biometric coefficients and audio vector embeddings for reliable user verification. A vector database is used to efficiently store data and perform similarity retrieval. Initially, the system achieves a 71% spoof detection accuracy, ensuring that only genuine samples proceed to the embedding stage, where it attains a 55.21% accuracy in vector embedding and similarity retrieval. Furthermore, this approach paves the way for user-specific voice-controlled …

The Prevalence And Impact Of Discourse In Social Media Networks: The 2024 Presidential Election, Kyle Kuberski, Xavier R. Mojica, Gwonchan J. Yoon, Brad Klein, Bivin P. Sadler
SMU Data Science Review
Abstract. Social Media platforms serve as central hubs for global discourse, where political dialogue is widely shared and echoed. This exchange shapes civic participation and influences electoral outcomes, often with both intended and unintended consequences. In its inception, social media platforms served as message boards for the masses, yet manipulation and exploiting of systems via bot usage has made platforms susceptible to outside forces. Thus, false narratives and an artificial sense of consensus are endemically augmented. As for the 2016 and 2020 U.S. presidential elections, it is important to investigate the prevalence of evolved bot activity in both political and …

Molecular Quantum Particle Algorithm (Mqpa): Hybrid Quantum-Classical Learning For Molecular Property Prediction, Jessica T. Mcphaul, Bivin Sadler Ph.D.
SMU Data Science Review
Classical machine learning models and quantum kernel methods often struggle to capture quantum-coherent molecular features under the constraints of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) hardware, limiting both predictive accuracy and scalability.
This paper introduces the Molecular Quantum Particle Algorithm (MQPA), a hybrid quantum–classical framework designed to achieve chemically accurate property prediction by integrating handcrafted molecular descriptors with parameterized quantum circuits. Molecular inputs, expressed as SMILES strings, are processed via RDKit and encoded through angle-based quantum gates with entangling layers in Qiskit [1]. Quantum parameters are optimized using simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) [2], while classical regression layers leverage Adam [3] with …
