The Impact Of Artificial Intelligence On Ecojustice And Ethics, Vishnu S. Pendyala
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has attained human-level performance in tasks like text summarization, machine translation, and code generation while handling multimodal data. Despite these advances, AI poses challenges such as generating false or biased outputs, causing discrimination, and exhibiting opaque decision-making processes that hinder bias mitigation. Additionally, training large language models (LLMs) for AI consumes substantial energy and can enable autonomous warfare, posing a threat to eco-justice, and raising sustainability concerns. Their ability to create realistic content poses the risk of misuse and perpetuating misinformation. This article addresses these ethical issues and presents solutions through regulation and technology, with examples of …

The Role Of Langmuir Circulation In Coastal Flows Driven By Wind, Waves And Tides, Thathsarani Dilini Herath Herath Mudiyanselage
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Langmuir Circulation (LC) is a wind and wave-driven process and is a key driver of vertical mixing and transport in the ocean. In coastal shelf regions, LC can span the entire water column, linking surface and bottom boundary layers and amplifying turbulent mixing. However, the influence of LC on vertical mixing and cross-shelf transport in shallow, tidally forced coastal waters remains poorly understood. This dissertation addresses this knowledge gap by developing a novel modeling framework based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations, offering a computationally efficient alternative to more resource-intensive Large Eddy Simulations (LES).
The proposed RANS-based approach is first …

Background and Objectives: Extant research on the relationship between fatigue and depression in people with rheumatic diseases portrays a divergent picture. While caring for persons with this medical condition, one issue that represents individual confidence in carrying out specific tasks, namely self-efficacy level, has attracted significant attention. Yet, the information regarding whether self-efficacy may pose a clue linking these two major symptoms is still unknown. The aim of this study, therefore, is to examine whether self-efficacy mediates the association between fatigue and depressive symptoms among persons with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Materials and Method: A cross-sectional study of 224 …

Anti-transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) is a promising approach for the treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). To date, preclinical and clinical studies for the use of anti-TGF-β therapy have focused on moderate to severe OI caused by qualitative defects in collagen. However, the majority of OI patients are represented by type I OI. Mutations resulting in the haploinsufficiency of type I collagen is the cause of OI type I in the majority of patients. To study the effect of anti-TGF-β therapy in type I OI, we generated a novel mouse model for OI type I. CMV-CRE mice were crossed to …

INTRODUCTION: Resuscitative transesophageal echo (rTEE) is a promising adjunct to cardiac arrest resuscitation. However, it is a high-acuity diagnostic tool that is rarely used in this setting and its safety establishment is limited because of low occurrence. High-acuity, low occurrence skills such as rTEE during cardiac arrest inevitably decay. In this study we examined the content and percentage of rTEE skill decay following simulation-based education (SBE).
METHODS: Resuscitative TEE-naïve emergency physicians (EP) were trained using a combination of clinical exposure, web-based didactics, and monthly hands-on sessions with a high-fidelity rTEE simulator for four months. The COVID-19 pandemic created a natural …

Xplain: Xai For Interpretable Llms Through Perturbation Analysis And Normalized Vector Similarity, Gopala Dhar, Sharmila Devi
Defensive Publications Series
This document introduces XAI methodology, referred to as XPLAIN, to address the challenges of LLM interpretability by developing a perturbation-based normalized vector similarity metric to identify and quantify word level importance of the prompt provided to an LLM on its generated output. By analyzing which words or phrases most significantly influence an LLM's decisions, the described techniques enhance the explainability and interpretability of large language models. The approach perturbs the prompt via masking words to generate several outputs through the LLM and then compares the outputs with the generated output of the unperturbed prompt through vector-based similarity at a semantic …

The movable printers are now reference robots in construction world that draws lines and text on the floor, translating architects' and engineers' digital plans into real floorplans. This accelerates construction and speeds up their work. Due to cost and simplicity, the movable printers do not include most of the hardware found in standard printers that ensure printhead reliability, extended autonomy, and unlimited power when connected to the electricity network.
As a result, the weight, size, and equipment must be minimized. One of the biggest challenges to take in account is the power supply. During movement and extensive printhead usage, combined …

Characterizing Cyberattacks Against Operational Technology Infrastructures Through The Lens Of Attack Flows, Sherman Kettner, Caleb Chang, Ekzhin Ear, Shouhuai Xu
Military Cyber Affairs
Operational Technology (OT) infrastructures play a critical role in modern society and economy. However, their increasing connectivity with public networks such as the Internet has made them vulnerable to cyberattacks, much like traditional Information Technology (IT) systems. In particular, cyberattacks against OT infrastructures remain relatively underexplored and little understood. In this paper, we aim to deepen our understanding of cyberattacks against OT infrastructures. For this purpose, we propose a methodology, including novel cybersecurity metrics to analyze the attack flows of these attacks in an end-to-end fashion, which allows us to draw useful insights. We demonstrate the utility of the methodology …

Silicon Sentinels: Using Whistleblower Protections To Manage Information Asymmetry And Ai Risk, Jason Green-Lowe, Fynn Fehrenbach, Mark Reddish
Liberty University Law Review
In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (“AI”) development, policymakers face a critical challenge: obtaining accurate and timely information about the potential risks and impacts of advanced AI systems. This Article examines the pivotal role of whistleblower protections as a mechanism to address the information asymmetry between AI companies and government officials. Employees inside AI companies are uniquely positioned to share information that can help outside regulators make wise policy decisions, but employees might be reluctant to do so unless their decision to share that information is legally protected. We propose a comprehensive framework for AI whistleblower protections as …

Open-Source; Open-Season; Open-Fire: Google V. Oracle And The Vulnerability Of Code To Copyright Infringement By Ai Harvesting, Kent Pederson
Liberty University Law Review
In Google v. Oracle, the Supreme Court was forced to decide if Google’s copying of 11,500 lines of computer code from Oracle without permission constituted copyright infringement. Much was on the line, including precedent concerning the copyright status of millions of lines of code nation-wide. In the lengthy decision, the Supreme Court avoided the central issue of holding whether the copied “declaring code” could be protected by copyright or instead was a functional tool outside of the Copyright Act. Instead, it punted the issue, assuming for the sake of argument that the declaring code that was taken was in …

The Measure Of A Man: Considering Science Fiction And Christianity In The Regulation Of Artificial Intelligence Models, Andrew P. Connors
Liberty University Law Review
Does artificial intelligence “think,” and if it does, what should the law do about it? This article examines popular culture and the Turing Test to assess whether artificial intelligence “thinks,” applying the author’s engineering background and his Christian worldview. The author concludes that artificial intelligence mimics rather than creates and considers the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence given that conclusion. The author suggests that legal regulation should be measured, leaving important decisions to humans while at the same time encouraging development of this important, misunderstood technology.

Ronald Reagan And The Politics Of Tuition, Alyssa Dunlop
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
This paper explores how Ronald Reagan, as governor of California, justified imposing tuition at the University of California, despite a near one hundred-year tradition of tuition-free education, by connecting tuition to the student protest movement of the 1960s. This paper argues that Reagan made the case for tuition by claiming that tuition would restore law and order on college campuses. Specifically, he contended that tuition would deter rabble-rousing individuals from attending college and improve the moral character of students. Consequently, this argument proved appealing for the majority of Californians, who expressed concern about the student protests, and thus the public …

Stability Analysis And Extension Of A Discrete-Time Dynamical System For Scaffolded Learning, Kris H. Green, Bernard Ricca
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
Van Geert and Steenbeek [16] proposed a coupled, delayed, discrete-time deterministic dynamical system to model scaffolded learning. We provide a detailed analysis of their model, whose global dynamics are complicated by the presence of intersecting lines of non-isolated, nonhyperbolic fixed points. We also interpret some of the trajectories in the system that have interesting dynamics in the context of the teacher-student interactions, and propose an extension to the model that simultaneously collapses the lines of fixed points to single, isolated points and is easily interpreted. These results provide the foundation for guiding the collection and integration of experimental data to …

The Evolution Of Global Gold And Copper Trade Networks, Oleksandr Hulianskyi
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
Gold and copper have emerged as two of the most vital commodities in global trade. Despite serving distinct purposes, their international trade networks reveal interconnected patterns, critical to understanding the dynamics of global economics. This paper studies these attributes and their evolution during the last 36 years for both metals and finds correlations between them. The first part of the research is focused on the sustainability of networks through efficiency and robustness indexes; the second part is dedicated to interconnectedness – the Louvain and Bayesian SBM algorithms, partition, and modularity instruments are used. Community detection algorithms provide valuable insights into …

Archives of Assessment Psychology
Previous studies related to psychological assessments focused largely on the various psychological assessment instruments used by professional psychologists to evaluate factors including personality functioning, intellectual abilities, attitudes and other behavioral activities. Recently, the seminal contributions of David Rapaport have influenced positively many of his colleagues and immediate followers to consider psychological assessments from a psychodynamic perspective; namely to realize that the examinee’s responses are influenced by the quality of the interpersonal assessment relationship. Consequently, guided by the psychodynamic point of view psychological assessment must be examinee-centered rather than test-centered.

Performance on the core working memory (Digit Span + Arithmetic) and processing speed (Coding + Symbol Search) subtests of the WAIS-IV is summarized by the Cognitive Proficiency Index (CPI). If a working memory subtest is spoiled, Letter-Number Sequencing is substituted. An invalidated processing speed subtest is replaced by Cancellation. These tasks are supplementary. The core and supplementary subtests yield nine four-subtest composites. Using the standardization sample, Campbell, Rossini, and Johnson (2022) demonstrated that all CPI tetrads had excellent alternate form reliability. In the present study, a clinical sample (n = 90) produced equally high reliabilities. Four of the new …
