Examining Weight Bias Attitude Changes After Exposure To A Brief Photovoice Assignment, Gretchen L. George, Hillary L. Roberts, Kristin Rose, Madison Clemens, Kate G. Burt Jul 2025

Examining Weight Bias Attitude Changes After Exposure To A Brief Photovoice Assignment, Gretchen L. George, Hillary L. Roberts, Kristin Rose, Madison Clemens, Kate G. Burt

Journal of Dietetic Education

Weight bias is present among pre-health professional students (e.g., nutrition, dietetics, nursing, physical therapy, medicine). Educators need support and guidelines about how to enhance learning through engaging assignments while also meeting accreditation requirements. This pilot study examined the impact of an innovative weight bias assignment using photovoice and reflection within existing nutrition education courses, measured through pre-post assessments from the Fat Attitudes Assessment Toolkit. While not all subscales showed significant change, improvements in the Fat Acceptance and Attribution Complexity Composites suggest these methods may be effective in shifting attitudes about fatness. Further research is needed to assess the long-term impact …

Journal of Dietetic Education

The Nutrition Care Process (NCP) is a systematic framework for providing nutrition care and a cornerstone of dietetics practice. Dietetics education relies on development of skills to achieve competence and demonstrate readiness for practice. The relationship between development of fundamental skills and self-efficacy among dietetics students preparing for clinical practice remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the development of dietetics students’ skills in NCP documentation and their self-efficacy in performing the skills over one academic year. Student nutrition notes (n = 120 notes, n = 30 students) from standardized patient encounters were evaluated for quality using …

Use Of An Honest Signal By Red-Footed Boobies Sula Sula In Response To Kleptoparasitism By Great Frigatebirds Fregata Minor, Lin Chao Jul 2025

Use Of An Honest Signal By Red-Footed Boobies Sula Sula In Response To Kleptoparasitism By Great Frigatebirds Fregata Minor, Lin Chao

Marine Ornithology

On Genovesa Island (00.3°N, 089.9°W) in the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, Great Frigatebirds Fregata minor kleptoparasitize (i.e., steal food from) Red-footed Boobies Sula sula. In five of eight cases that I observed, the frigatebirds harassed the boobies until the latter regurgitated their forage, which the frigatebirds consumed. In three cases, the booby responded with a honk-like call and the frigatebirds stopped harassing. I propose that the honk is an “honest signal” by a booby having little food to divulge. Boobies loaded with forage do not honk because the call could trigger regurgitation. Thus, frigatebirds harass with escalation only non-honking boobies. The …

Relative Abundance, Seasonal Occurrence, And Distribution Of Marine Birds In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, J. Christopher Haney, Pamela E. Michael, Jeffrey S. Gleason, Randy R. Wilson, Yvan G. Satgé, Kathy M. Hixson, Patrick G.R. Jodice Jul 2025

Relative Abundance, Seasonal Occurrence, And Distribution Of Marine Birds In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, J. Christopher Haney, Pamela E. Michael, Jeffrey S. Gleason, Randy R. Wilson, Yvan G. Satgé, Kathy M. Hixson, Patrick G.R. Jodice

Marine Ornithology

Marine birds in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico have long been poorly studied. Given statutory obligations to protect migratory birds and endangered species, three broad-scale vessel and aerial programs initiated since 2010 have now surveyed the entire northern Gulf. Vessel coverage alone exceeds 700 d and 74,000 km of observer effort using 300-m strip transects. We supplemented these survey data with earlier, smaller-scale studies, eBird checklists, literature reviews, and other less accessible sources to create snapshot summaries of relative abundance, seasonal occurrence, and regional distribution for 117 taxa of marine and water birds reported from the northern Gulf (113 of …

Status Of Craveri’S Murrelet Synthliboramphus Craveri In The Midriff Islands, Gulf Of California, Mexico, Francisco Jaime Martínez Reyes, Lauren A. Dolinski, Lorayne R. Meltzer, Paulina De L. Camarena Gomez, Noah L. Oas Jul 2025

Status Of Craveri’S Murrelet Synthliboramphus Craveri In The Midriff Islands, Gulf Of California, Mexico, Francisco Jaime Martínez Reyes, Lauren A. Dolinski, Lorayne R. Meltzer, Paulina De L. Camarena Gomez, Noah L. Oas

Marine Ornithology

The Craveri's Murrelet Synthliboramphus craveri is an endangered seabird (family Alcidae) endemic to northwestern Mexico, where it breeds on rocky islands throughout the Gulf of California (GOC). Nesting records are scarce for most of these islands, and much of the available information relies on historical data collected more than 50 years ago. Beginning in 2009 through to 2023, we performed intermittent nest searches on five islands in the Midriff Islands of the GOC. Starting in 2018 on Alcatraz Island and starting in 2022 on San Pedro Mártir Island, we monitored nests to determine average clutch size and hatching success. We …

Nape Coloration Varies With Sex, Not Age, Among Great Shearwaters Ardenna Gravis, Ewan D. Wakefield, Anna R. Robuck, Kevin D. Powers, Robert A. Ronconi, Peter G. Ryan, David N. Wiley

Marine Ornithology

Most petrels (family Procellariidae) exhibit little or no obvious variation in plumage with age or sex, either because plumage performs no sexual function or does so in a way poorly perceptible to humans. This limits the inferences that can be made from visual observations of petrels at sea. However, it has been suggested that nape coloration of Great Shearwaters Ardenna gravis whitens with age. Here we test this supposition using observations of known-age-class individuals. We necropsied birds bycaught around Gough Island, a major breeding colony in the South Atlantic Ocean, and in Massachusetts Bay, a wintering area off the northeastern …

Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Beached Birds In Northern Argentine Patagonia, Victoria Magdalena Pizá, Patricio Javier Pereyra, Juan Pablo Seco Pon

Marine Ornithology

Beached birds on marine coastal beaches, along with other megafauna, are a valuable source of biological information, offering insights into species occurrence and factors that negatively affect their populations. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial and temporal variation, and species composition, of coastal and marine birds found on sandy beaches in the Bahía de San Antonio Protected Natural Area (Río Negro Province, Argentina), and to relate resulting species abundance and richness to oceanographic and environmental variables. A biweekly survey was carried out over two years (2020-2022), during which 672 beached birds were recorded. The overall …

Thick-Billed Murres Uria Lomvia At Cape Parry, Northwest Territories: Core-Use Areas, Morphometrics And Chick Diets, Rosana Paredes, Stephen, J. Insley, Sebastian Luque, Piia Kortsalo Jul 2025

Thick-Billed Murres Uria Lomvia At Cape Parry, Northwest Territories: Core-Use Areas, Morphometrics And Chick Diets, Rosana Paredes, Stephen, J. Insley, Sebastian Luque, Piia Kortsalo

Marine Ornithology

Cape Parry is home to the only colony of Thick-billed Murres Uria lomvia in the western Canadian Arctic, but ecological information for this small, isolated population is lacking. To address this information gap, we investigated the spatial distribution, diving behaviour, diet, and morphometrics of male and female Cape Parry Thick-billed Murres during the breeding season. We tracked 23 chick-rearing adults (seven females and 16 males) using Global Positioning System (GPS) tags with depth sensors (2021) and collected chick diet data (2021, 2022) using observations and photos. Cape Parry murres foraged relatively close to the colony (4.5 ± 3.3 km) and …

Comparison Of Offspring Growth Models In Atlantic Puffins Fratercula Arctica , Katja H. Kochvar, Raul Zabala Belenguer, Pierre-Paul Bitton

Marine Ornithology

Growth of morphological traits in the offspring of many seabirds, including Atlantic Puffins Fratercula arctica, has typically been characterized by linear models despite displaying nonlinear patterns. We assessed the fit of six typical avian growth models to measurements of puffling mass, wing length, and tenth primary length. Across all three biometrics, the first- and second-best performing models were nonlinear (i.e., quadratic, logistic, extreme value function); these models were then used to generate separate growth curves for individual pufflings and extract easily interpretable and comparable parameter estimates. We recommend the reported models in future studies incorporating metrics of puffling growth and …

Breeding Season Movements Of Aleutian Terns Onychoprion Aleuticus: Implications For Population Assessment And Monitoring, Kelly Nesvacil, Grey W. Pendleton, John P. Skinner, Susan Oehlers, Jeff Mondragon, Donald E. Lyons Jul 2025

Breeding Season Movements Of Aleutian Terns Onychoprion Aleuticus: Implications For Population Assessment And Monitoring, Kelly Nesvacil, Grey W. Pendleton, John P. Skinner, Susan Oehlers, Jeff Mondragon, Donald E. Lyons

Marine Ornithology

In 2017 and 2018, satellite transmitters were deployed (n2017 = 13, n2018 = 14) on Aleutian Terns Onychoprion aleuticus in two areas of Alaska, USA, to investigate breeding season movements and temporal patterns of colony activity. The effort was intended to aid in the development of a large-scale population-assessment framework. Across the two years, we observed dispersal to seven confirmed or potential (putative) colonies, none of which were previously documented, ranging in distance from 0.4 to 64.2 km from tag deployment sites. Although most terns did not associate with any known colonies during the breeding season, several individuals from the …

Modeling Breeding Habitat Preferences Of Tahiti Petrel Pseudobulweria Rostrata On Ta‘Ū, American Samoa, A. J. Titmus, C. A. Lepczyk Jul 2025

Modeling Breeding Habitat Preferences Of Tahiti Petrel Pseudobulweria Rostrata On Ta‘Ū, American Samoa, A. J. Titmus, C. A. Lepczyk

Marine Ornithology

Understanding the prevalence and use of breeding habitat of seabird species is important for evaluating appropriate conservation and management strategies. Seabirds are one taxonomic group for which we have relatively few species distribution studies, particularly on remote islands. To address this limitation, the goals of this study were to (1) build and use a species distribution model to identify which differences in habitat structure, physical characteristics, and environmental conditions affect Tahiti Petrel Pseudobulweria rostrata nesting presence on the island of Ta‘ū, American Samoa; and (2) evaluate how important nesting habitat characteristics can identify the fine-scale extent and location of suitable …

Marine Ornithology

In 2008, we built an artificial nesting construction for Common Murres Uria aalge, the Karlsö Auk Lab, on an island in the Baltic Sea (Hentati-Sundberg et al., 2012). The aim was to create an environment in which the birds could be readily monitored and accessed, and technological equipment easily installed. In this current paper, we report on murre recruitment to the Auk Lab over the first decade, assess the performance of the birds living on the lab compared to natural cliff ledges, and revisit the original research questions. We conclude that the tremendous developments in sensor technology (video surveillance, automated …

Mixed Metrics And The Need To Adjust Remote-Sensing Data In The Evaluation Of Key Biodiversity Areas For Colonial-Nesting Seabirds: An Example With Glaucous-Winged Gulls Larus Glaucescens, Michael S. Rodway, Douglas F. Bertram, Lindsay A.R. Lalach Jul 2025

Lalach

Marine Ornithology

Conservation initiatives such as the Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) Programme use standardized criteria based on estimates of species abundance to identify critical habitats. They therefore depend on accurate estimates of population sizes for target species. It is essential that the metrics used to measure abundance at a candidate site are consistent with those used to estimate total abundance at national or global scales, because only then can it be determined whether abundance at a site meets threshold criteria. Imagery gathered by remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS, or drones) has rapidly become a tool for determining abundance of surface-nesting seabirds and, …

Updated Distribution And Population Dynamics Of Magellanic Penguin Spheniscus Magellanicus Colonies In The Strait Of Magellan, Chile, Manuel Ochoa-Sánchez, Jorge Acevedo, Claudio Moraga, Katherine Gaete, Pedro Valenzuela, Valeria Souza, Eliana Paola Acuña Gomez

Marine Ornithology

The Magellanic Penguin Spheniscus magellanicus exhibits a broad latitudinal distribution in southern South America. However, the locations of many breeding colonies remain poorly known on the Pacific side, particularly in the southernmost region. Here, we provide information for six Magellanic Penguin colonies in the Strait of Magellan and adjacent waters that have been known by the local community for years but were unknown in the scientific literature until now: Rupert Islet, Tuckers Islet 1, Tuckers Islet 2, James Island 1, James Island 2, and Monmouth Island. These locations differ in population size and in vegetation coverage: most colonies are characterized …

Black Oystercatcher Haematopus Bachmani Productivity In California And Oregon And The Effects Of Nest Site And Environmental Covariates, Anna Weinstein, Joseph Liebezeit, Daniel Orr, Ryan D. Carle, Timothy D. Meehan

Marine Ornithology

Black Oystercatcher Haematopus bachmani is a species of conservation concern due to its small global population, reliance on somewhat restricted intertidal habitat, and vulnerability to climate change impacts. Concern for this species, along with a lack of demographic information from the southern portion of its range, gave rise to a community science project to monitor pair productivity, nest characteristics, and nest disturbance from 2012 through 2022 across three study regions in Oregon and California. A clear spatial gradient existed in productivity, with relatively low values in the southern region (0.37 fledged young per pair per year, 95% confidence interval [CI] …

Robert Kohley, Jessica Behnke, Brooke Mcfarland, Katherine Finney, Hob Osterlund, Julie Murphy, Angela Serota, Louise Barnfield, Yuka Green, Kim S. Rogers, Cathy Granholm

Marine Ornithology

In the 1960s and 1970s, Laysan Albatrosses Phoebastria immutabilis colonized several sites in the Pacific from which they had been extirpated or had not been known to nest previously, including the US Navy’s Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) on Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i, USA, where they increased to become a bird aircraft strike hazard (BASH). To reduce their population at PMRF, albatross eggs were destroyed or removed as part of a BASH reduction program until 2005, when an alternate plan was devised by the Navy, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and US Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services, in which eggs from PMRF …

A Regionally Significant Population Of White-Tailed Tropicbirds Phaethon Lepturus On Kurehdhoo (Lhaviyani Atoll), Republic Of The Maldives, James C. Russell, Sebastian Steibl, Guy M.W. Stevens

Marine Ornithology

Coral atoll islands are important breeding sites for tropical seabird species, but on many of these islands, disturbances from humans and introduced mammals have extirpated breeding colonies. In the Republic of the Maldives (Indian Ocean), little published information exists on the location and extent of seabird breeding colonies. Here, we document what appears to be a regionally significant breeding site for White-tailed Tropicbirds Phaethon lepturus on Kurehdhoo, the northern-most inhabited island of Lhaviyani Atoll in the central Maldives. We systematically surveyed the entire island on two separate occasions, six months apart, to count the number of White-tailed Tropicbird nests, their …

Occupation-Based Practice Needs Occupation-Based Assessments: The Loss Of The Amps Family Assessments And How We Move Forward From Here, Leon Kirschner

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

The Occupational Therapy Domain and Process identifies participation in life activities as a key aspect of occupational therapy’s domain. It also identifies assessment as a key process in our practice. Still, few commonly used assessments use real, meaningful activities in real context to identify what factors are affecting performance. The AMPS family of assessments were among the only assessments used for these purposes. Because of a series of factors, these assessments recently became unavailable for new users and are no longer supported by a central organization. This paper explores the strengths and needs for these types of assessments, the factors …

Pay-To-Play: Maine’S Unconstitutional Requirement For Indigent Defendants To Pay To Appeal Eviction Judgments, Shianne Bowlin, Fred Kerrigan, Alice Neal

Maine Law Review

Maine’s eviction appeal process imposes financial barriers that effectively condition appellate review on a tenant’s ability to pay. Under Maine law, tenants must pay rent or arrears—often in dispute—before filing an appeal. This “pay-to-play” requirement disproportionately harms low-income tenants, particularly those receiving public assistance, and violates constitutional due process and equal protection guarantees. Despite federal and state precedent rejecting financial barriers to appeals, Maine’s eviction appeal system continues to restrict access to justice for indigent tenants. This Article examines the legal and constitutional implications of these requirements, comparing Maine’s approach to eviction appeals with those of other states. It explores …

An Argument For Housing Reparations, Lisa Lucile Owens Jul 2025

An Argument For Housing Reparations, Lisa Lucile Owens

Maine Law Review

This Article explores recent applications and framing of municipal reparatory housing policies and assesses equal protection challenges, including specific discussion of an emerging case in Evanston, Illinois. Because of recent changes to the Supreme Court’s approach to applying strict scrutiny in equal protection challenges of race-conscious policies as reflected in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, race-based applications of reparations have been criticized as dead on arrival. However, this Article finds that housing-related reparatory policies are dissimilar from affirmative action admissions policies in several ways relevant to the Court’s application of strict scrutiny. Housing reparations policies are more in line …

Evicted From The Outside, Colleen Cosgriff

Maine Law Review

In recent years, Maine has seen an increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness who are living outdoors. People living in these circumstances often shelter together in groups of tents or other temporary structures commonly referred to as “encampments.”As municipalities across Maine struggled with how best to respond to the increase in encampments across the state, the United States Supreme Court decided City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, a case originating in Grants Pass, Oregon. Grants Pass wanted to issue civil and criminal fines to people for sleeping outdoors, even when no alternative shelter was available. The city ultimately …
