Relationship Of A Business Simulation Course To Act Applied Math Outcomes, Brenda Lorraine Savage Jul 2025

Relationship Of A Business Simulation Course To Act Applied Math Outcomes, Brenda Lorraine Savage

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Little evidence links the use of business simulations to advances in the higher order thinking skills that high school students need to prepare for careers in finance. The problem for this study was that students in three southern high schools had limited success on the ACT Applied Math Assessment, and there was a need to explore the relationship of a newly implemented stock market trading simulation course to student success on the assessment. Kolb’s experiential learning theory, which was aligned to the simulation activities, guided the study. The purpose of this quantitative predictive study was to determine whether participation in …

Towards Scalable Taxi Demand Prediction, Yifei Shen Jul 2025

Towards Scalable Taxi Demand Prediction, Yifei Shen

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Accurate taxi demand prediction is essential for optimizing urban mobility systems across varying spatial-temporal resolutions and data conditions. Scalable taxi demand prediction refers to the capability of forecasting models to adapt to different granularities of spatial and temporal data while maintaining prediction accuracy, a critical requirement for practical urban applications ranging from fleet management to transportation planning. However, two fundamental challenges impede this scalability: data sparsity and multi-resolution forecasting requirements. Data sparsity, particularly pronounced in high-resolution predictions where numerous regions exhibit minimal activity, significantly compromises model performance. Concurrently, different urban applications necessitate predictions at varying temporal and spatial granularities, requiring …

Engagement, Motivation, And Interest In K-12 Science Education, Neil T M Bailie Jul 2025

Engagement, Motivation, And Interest In K-12 Science Education, Neil T M Bailie

Masters Projects

Interest, motivation, and engagement amongst science students is declining. This decline is primarily due to a loss of interest, motivation, self-efficacy, and perceived utility value (Bathgate & Schunn, 2017; Britner, 2008; Kraft, 2017). With crucial topics such as climate change and the legitimacy of vaccines coming under scrutiny, it is vital for our society that we keep our secondary students actively engaged and motivated with the science that they are learning in the classroom (Kolenatý et al., 2024; Schlopsna & Scheersoi, 2024). The main goal of this project was to create a complete unit curriculum covering the topics of the …

Attention-Based Binary Question Answering Using Hybrid Of Bi-Lstm And Bi-Gru, Nada Fadhil Mohammed, Israa Hadi Ali

Baghdad Science Journal

Question Answering (QA) is a crucial aspect of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and information retrieval systems. Users usually hope to help with everyday life by teaching the program how to answer questions like a real person. QA aims using NLP techniques to generate a correct answer to a given question according to given context or knowledge on the massive unstructured corpus). Binary question answering (Binary QA) involves providing binary answers (yes/no, true/false) to questions posed in natural language. With the development of deep learning over the years, deep learning technologies have played a pivotal role in advancing the state-of-the-art in …

Enhancing Feature Selection In Network Intrusion Detection Systems Using A Novel Hybrid Binary Swarm Algorithms, Maher Khalaf Hussein, Asmaa Alqassab, Lubna Thanoon Alkahla

Baghdad Science Journal

An intrusion detection system (IDS) is a system that monitors network traffic for any mistrustful activity and issues alerts when it is detected. The selection of feature stage is important in effective intrusion detection systems, as it determines the features that are most influential in detecting normal traffic and malicious traffic. In this study, new proposed hybrid method for selecting features in intrusion detection systems based on the hybrid binary Salp Swarm algorithm (SSA) and the binary Pigeon Inspired Optimizer (PIO), inspired by the collective behavior of animals. The proposed method removes unnecessary features and increases the number of features …

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in females and remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths for women worldwide. The cellular and molecular basis of breast tumorigenesis is not completely understood partly due to the lack of human research models which simulate the development of breast cancer. Here, we developed a method for generating functional mammary-like cells (MCs) from human-induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). The iPSC-MCs closely resemble human primary MCs at cellular, transcriptional, and functional levels. Using this method, a breast cancer model was generated using patient-derived iPSCs harboring germline

The quality of life (QoL) perception has been studied in neurological diseases; however, there is limited information linking brain morphological characteristics, QoL, and cognition. Human behavior and perception are associated with specific brain areas that interact through diffuse electrochemical networking. We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to analyze the brain region volume (BRV) correlation with the scores of Rand’s 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36) and cognitive domains (memory and dementia status). We analyzed data from 420 adult participants in the Maracaibo Aging Study (MAS). Principal component analysis with oblimin axis rotation was used to gather redundant information from brain parcels …

Qualitative Thematic Analysis Of Crisis Communications From The Digital Pulpits Of Megachurches During Covid-19, Ralph Dustin Henderson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative thematic analysis multi-case study was to explore how secular crisis communication theories were adopted and modified by theological themes in U.S. megachurches during the first six weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic related lockdowns. Image Repair Theory (IRT), Discourse Renewal Theory (DRT), and Rhetorical Arena Theory (RAT) were examined alongside Christian themes (Theodicy, Radical Love, Physical Care, and Nontraditional Stakeholder Scope). Thematic analysis of sermon transcripts from 18 megachurches showed that IRT modified: high-attribution tactics were minimal; denial (via IMRA theodicy) defended the Church Universal (CU); evasion justified Church Local (CL)actions; and offensiveness reduction (esp. Transcendence) …

Mental Health In Prisons: Examining Variations In Disorders Across Custody Levels, Ariel Bysiek Jul 2025

Mental Health In Prisons: Examining Variations In Disorders Across Custody Levels, Ariel Bysiek

Dissertations and Theses

The United States has a significantly large prison population with the number of people currently in a correctional facility being 1.9 million. Concern has been increasingly growing related to treatment of individuals in prison, particularly when it comes to solitary confinement. Many people believe that solitary confinement is unnecessarily cruel and debilitating to AIC's mental health. Studies have found contradicting information as to whether solitary impacts mental health. Part of the reason for this contradiction stems from the lack of measurement systems that are appropriate for AICs. The measures used in studies are meant for the general population, not individuals …

Assessment Of Dnase Activity By Ratiometric Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer, Candace L Minchew, Vladimir V Didenko

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The present protocol describes a simple and sensitive ratiometric Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) assay for the detection and quantitative assessment of DNase activity. Ratiometric FRET measurements make use of the ratio of donor and acceptor emission signals. The assay detects single-stranded DNA breaks using a staple-shaped, dual-tagged 38-mer FRET oligoprobe, employed as a real-time DNA cleavage sensor. The main application of the described approach is the quantitative assessment of the effects of reaction conditions, such as pH, temperature, and buffer composition, on DNase activity. Due to its ability to detect even minor and slow DNA cleavage, the assay is …

Book Review: Jeff Fynn-Paul. Not Stolen: The Truth About European Colonialism In The New World. New York: Bombardier Books, 2023., Alexander Robbin Marks-Katz

Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History

Political debates are sometimes accompanied by soul-searching. This is particularly the case in respect to the legacies of treatment of African Americans and Native Americans in U.S. history. However, soul-searching can also be manipulated into political buzzwords like settler colonialism, cultural genocide, and Manifest Destiny. In Not Stolen, Jeff Fynn-Paul evenhandedly relates historical facts about Native American history. This review then fits his facts into an analysis of the Divine hand in settler-Native American interactions.

Insights From Educators: Integrating Ai Literacy Into Media Literacy Education In Practice, Stephanie Jean Tsang Jul 2025

Insights From Educators: Integrating Ai Literacy Into Media Literacy Education In Practice, Stephanie Jean Tsang

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Through in-depth interviews with junior high school teachers in Hong Kong who participated in a media and artificial intelligence literacy program intervention, this research highlights the importance of prioritizing values and ethics education over technical proficiency when incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into media literacy training. While quantitatively assessing students’ literacy levels posed challenges, future media literacy programs should concentrate on introducing technological terminology and concepts, promoting awareness of potential issues, instilling values for responsible technology use, and fostering empathy to create a harmonious online environment. By focusing on fundamental values and key concepts rather than following fleeting AI trends, educators …

Classroom Contexts: Teachers Talk Teaching Media Literacy, Sakshi Bhalla, Michelle R. Nelson, Michael Spikes

Journal of Media Literacy Education

In this study, we examine the lived experiences of educators who engage with youth through media literacy education. While prior research has examined the efficacy of media literacy education interventions, little attention has been paid to the contexts in which these are conducted. Our analysis of 20 semistructured interviews reveals how the structural context illuminates several “divides,” shaping how media literacy is taught and experienced. Three major themes emerged from the data: (1) teachers and high school students inhabit distinct media worlds, shaping their media understanding differently; (2) the socio-economic status of the school determines whether media literacy is taught …

There is a need for additional research to address persistent gaps as well as for sweeping policy change and collective action to improve the unacceptable conditions of trans* educators.

Unmasking A New Dialect Of Deception: Leveraging The Federal Trade Commission To Combat Deceptive And Exploitative Corporate Policies, Hani Baltagi Jul 2025

Unmasking A New Dialect Of Deception: Leveraging The Federal Trade Commission To Combat Deceptive And Exploitative Corporate Policies, Hani Baltagi

Cleveland State Law Review

Corporate social responsibility initiatives have transformed fair labor policies into powerful marketing tools, but the gap between the public promise to embrace ethical labor practices and actual corporate compliance with such practices has widened. This has the effect of not only impeding the average consumer’s purchasing decision, but perpetuating—if not catalyzing—labor exploitation across the world. The existence of this paradigm thus necessitates additional, heightened intervention by none other than Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

The FTC’s three-pronged test for deception—previously created to combat other forms of deceptive practices—provides an accountability framework for deceptive marketing claims that utilize unfollowed, self-adopted corporate fair …

Comparing Solutions To Reduce Inaccuracies Within Eyewitness Testimonies, Dequentin Augustine, Dr. Chandra V. Thornton

Cleveland State Law Review

Comparing Solutions to Reduce Inaccuracies within Eyewitness Testimonies informs readers about how inconsistencies within eyewitness statements have led to wrongful convictions by examining factors and statistics that lead to highlighting inaccuracies within eyewitness testimonies. We identified three psychological methods that may be beneficial in reducing these inaccuracies: 1. double-blind lineup; 2. cognitive interview; and 3. expert testimony. After examining their strengths, weaknesses, and counterarguments, we agree that these three methods may be beneficial in reducing inaccuracies within eyewitness testimonies by establishing federal recommended guidelines to which states should adhere.

The Pursuit Of Municipal Sovereignty: How The Ohio Legislature Is Attempting To Violate The Right To Local Self-Governance, Cole Sundermann Jul 2025

The Pursuit Of Municipal Sovereignty: How The Ohio Legislature Is Attempting To Violate The Right To Local Self-Governance, Cole Sundermann

Cleveland State Law Review

This Note examines the Ohio Legislature’s recent efforts to undermine the constitutional right to local self-governance guaranteed by the Ohio’s home rule amendment within the Ohio Constitution. By focusing on Senate Bills 91, 137, and 158, it analyzes the legislative initiatives aimed at preempting municipal powers to implement participatory budgeting and ranked-choice voting systems. These bills exemplify a broader trend of the Legislature’s attempt at eroding municipal autonomy in Ohio, cutting against the principles of local sovereignty established by the 1912 Constitutional Convention. The Note argues that such preemption efforts violate the core right to self-governance as interpreted by the …

Staff Education To Use The Teach-Back Method To Decrease Congestive Heart Failure Readmissions, Carlita Tucker Jul 2025

Staff Education To Use The Teach-Back Method To Decrease Congestive Heart Failure Readmissions, Carlita Tucker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This staff education project focused on educating staff to use the teach-back method to decrease congestive heart failure (CHF) readmissions. It is essential to address this issue within the context of nursing practice because CHF patients have left the hospital without adequate knowledge of their care plans, which compromised their self-care and increased their chances of returning to the hospital. This project employed the teach-back method, which is an effective communication process involving the patient reiterating what the staff has told them. The practice-focused question which guided the project was: For staff in an acute care hospital, will evidence-based training …
